SCH Site Services to Help Stiller Expand with £750k Warehouse

Steel firm SCH Site Services is helping major logistics company Stiller to expand once more with the development of a £750,000 warehouse. Based on Aycliffe Business Park, Stiller Warehousing and Distribution is in the process of building a new 40,000 sq ft warehouse for its rapidly expanding list of customers. The latest development will stand at 10 metres tall and will have the capacity to store a further 6,000 pallets for the family run business. The scheme will support dozens of local jobs during its construction. Darlington bases ADG Architects will manage the project with civil engineering support from Durham based firm BDN. Hall Construction is its main contractor, based nearby at Rushyford, which awarded Aycliffe based SCH a project to fabricate and erect its frame using 90 tonnes of steel. CH, which has previously worked with Hall Construction on the refurbishment of buildings at PD Ports on Teesside, completed the steel fabrication and erection of the frame within eight weeks, and the warehouse is expected to be fully completed in the New Year. SCH managing director Gary Finley said: “We’re delighted to have worked on a project so close to us in Newton Aycliffe which is supporting several local employers. “We fabricated the steel in-house at our facility just around the corner from Stiller’s site and erected it on site. “The extension had to join an existing warehouse which made it a little more complex than a stand- alone shed and we also had to design the end connections for the structure, but we’re pleased we’ve been able to work with one of our neighbours in enabling their ambitious plans for future growth.” The new warehouse will take Stiller’s recent investments in equipment, people and property to more than £6.4 million in the last three years.

Premier Modular Secures 1,000 Module Hinkley Job

East Yorkshire off-site specialist firm Premier Modular has bagged a 1,000 module Hinkley site office job. The company has confirmed an order for 1,000 site office modules for the Hinkley Point C construction scheme. The order is the largest placed for modular offices and site welfare facilities in the UK and will take just 16 months to make. All the technical and management personnel will be housed in the 400,000 sq ft site office complex during the construction stage of the nuclear power plant. Then, part of the buildings will be converted after the construction cycle to stay ad high quality offices for the permanent site. The steel framed modules will be made off site at Premier’s manufacturing facility in East Yorkshire, before it is transported to the Hinkley Point C site for fitting out and final assembly. Divisional Director at Premier, David Harris, commented: “This project is one of the most significant modular projects in history and will really put modular construction on the map. “We foresee that this project is not only important for Premier but will also be of significant benefit to the local economies in Yorkshire and Somerset in terms of both subcontractor and supplier opportunities required to support this major construction project.” It is also Premier’s intention to contract work, where practical, to companies local to the Hinkley Point C site, where it is anticipated that approximately 35% of the work will be completed. Meanwhile, the chief executive of EDF Energy has vowed that the £24bn Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant will be built by 2025 and will not result in extra costs to UK taxpayers. In evidence before the House of Lords economic affairs select committee, Vincent de Rivaz dismissed parallels with two nuclear plants EDF is building in France and Finland, which have suffered delays and cost overruns.

Willmott Dixon Partnerships Re-Branded as Fortem

Willmott Dixon Partnerships, the property repairs and maintenance specialist, is set to change its name to Fortem. Fortem is a Latin word for strength and prudency. The rebranding from Willmott Dixon Partnerships comes as part of a fresh approach. The company is looking to provide the senior management team with more operational freedom to grow the firm outside its core social housing market. Earlier in the year, Willmott Dixon outlined plans to sell the business. However this sale was abandoned when a suitable buyer could not be found. The business, which has a turnover of £145 million, provides maintenance and repairs services to housing associations and local authorities throughout the country. Its team of 1,400 directly employed engineers undertakes more than 400,000 repairs every year. It also provides planned cyclical work to support estate renewal programmes and property asset investment. Mick Williamson, Managing Director at the newly named Fortem, said: “We have strong ambitions for growth and this means that now is the right time to create a new stand-out brand to become recognised as a leader in property maintenance across all sectors, not just housing. “Fortem reflects these aspirations by heralding a new era for our business as we continue to invest in ensuring we are ‘best in class’ for our existing customers, while giving us flexibility to plan ahead for expansion with new customers.” At present, the company is responsible for maintenance, repairs and cyclical work on more than 110,000 homes. It works as a key partner for local authorities such as Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Birmingham City Council, along with housing associations such as Paragon, Orbit, Metropolitan and Midland Heart. Coinciding with the new name, the sister company of Willmott Dixon Partnerships, Willmott Dixon Energy Services, will be drawn into the Fortem brand to expand the business’ services and skill sets.

Knight Frank to Handle Normanton Warehouse Property Sale

A brand new distribution warehouse property at the Trident Park development in Normanton is set to hit the market. The industrial agency team of Knight Frank in Leeds has been given instruction as the sole agents to market the purpose built 52,402 sq ft unit located on Rosie Road, which is just a mile off Junction 31 on the M62. The site was built for BSS Group and was finished earlier in the year, and is now available to be purchased immediately for either lease or purchase. Partner at Knight Frank in Leeds, Iain McPhail, said that they are pleased to be instructed to advise their client on such a prestigious high-quality, newly-constructed warehouse unit at a prime logistics site. McPhail continued: “We are confident that the building will attract early interest due to the lack of existing options of this size currently in the marketplace, as well as the unique nature of the property which offers an occupier a high-bay warehouse on a generously-sized site. “The property benefits from an excellent specification, including 13-metre eaves height, four loading doors, steel framed canopy, two storey offices and an over-sized service yard extending to approximately 2.35acres, which allows an occupier the flexibility to either further extend the building (subject to planning) or utilise for external storage or HGV parking.” The property is available for immediate occupation on either a freehold or a leasehold basis. Last month, Knight Frank reported a record turnover, although profits took a downturn. Chief executive Alistair Elliot said that expansion in China, India and central London had pushed the firm’s turnover up by 4% in the 12 months to March 31, but pre-tax profits had been hit by a quieter start to this year, dipping from £160.1 million last year to £152.6 million in 2016. “There is no question that the majority of residential and commercial markets were beginning to peak in the autumn of last year,” Mr Elliot said.

During one of his first visits to the OLP, the recently appointed President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Darren Pearce, recognised the big potential of the multi-million London 2012 legacy scheme. Once fully operational, the 35 acre OLP is due to become the world’s leading location for innovation in wellbeing, health and sport. Pearce, who is also centre director at Meadowhall shopping centre, said that the Olympic Legacy Park is a truly inspiring project. He continued: “With the recent announcement of plans to regenerate the Attercliffe area, the Olympic Legacy Park is already leading by example and embracing the huge potential for the sports, health and wellbeing agenda in our region. “The UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and Oasis Academy Don Valley are both excellent facilities, providing innovative learning environments where young people across the region can recognise their full potential. “It was great to have the opportunity to see first-hand how the site is developing and how the Olympic Legacy Park is already putting Sheffield on the map. From a Meadowhall perspective, the Olympic Legacy Park very much aligns with the corporate wellbeing objectives of our owners British Land.” Meanwhile, the boss of the London Stadium has resigned after an inquiry was opened into the soaring costs to the taxpayer to run the venue. David Edmonds, the chairman of the London Legacy Development Corporation which is responsible for the running of the city’s Olympic Park and how the facilities are used following the 2012 Games, has quit his post. The announcement comes after London mayor Sadiq Khan announced on Tuesday evening that he had ordered an investigation into the rising bill for converting the London Stadium for use by West Ham amid concerns that taxpayers will be saddled with the costs for years to come.

Carillion JV Secures £1.1bn Facilities Management Defence Contract

Carillion’s joint venture with US engineering giant KBR has secured a £1.1 billion construction and facilities management contract to re-base troops coming back from Germany by 2019. The Aspire Defence Capital Works joint venture will design and build 130 buildings, along with extensions and alterations to the current buildings and associated infrastructure. The construction works throughout Aldershot and the Salisbury Plain Training Area are set to begin straight away. They are worth £680 million, which will be shared equally between the partners. The facilities management and maintenance of the new camps and garrisons will be provided by a separate joint venture between both companies, known as Aspire Defence Services. The Project Allenby/Connaught PFI contract was let to Aspire in 2006. Together this will generate £430 million of support services revenue over the remaining 25 year contract. The additional service provision will begin as soon as construction of the first asset is completed, which is expected to be in May 2017, and will run until 2041. ‘We are delighted’ Carillion chief executive Richard Howson said: “We are delighted that Aspire Defence Limited and its sub-contractors Aspire Defence Capital Works and Aspire Defence Services have been selected by the Ministry of Defence to deliver this major element of the Army Basing Programme. “I believe this reflects in the successful delivery of new living and working accommodation along with associated assets for Project Allenby/Connaught, together with the high-quality, value for money services that will continue to be provided for this project.” Last month, Carillion secured a £350 million contract to continue its support of Nationwide Building Society. With the new deal, the buildings and maintenance firm will maintain its management facilities at Nationwide’s Swindon headquarters, its 15 corporate offices, its data centres and its 700 high street outlets throughout the UK. It is a seven-year contract with the potential to be increased to ten, and renews the existing nine-year partnership between the two companies. Shares in Carillion jumped 1.53pc early on Tuesday morning to 255p. Image: MoD/Crown copyright 2016. Photographer Ian Griffiths
