Seymour Civil Engineering celebrates continued growth with the appointment of board of directors

North East civil engineering firm, Seymour Civil Engineering, has taken further steps towards securing its future success, with the appointment of four new company directors. All hailing from existing roles within the company, Adam Harker has been named as Contracts Director, Simon Rodgers as Commercial Director, Stuart Dickens as Construction Director and Karl Brennan as Pre-construction Director. Karl, who has been with Seymour Civil Engineering for 13 years, previously as the company’s bid coordinator, said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed in this new position. It’s fantastic to have been rewarded for my commitment to the business. It’s also testament to one of Seymour’s key values, ‘A People Business’. Seymour is excellent at fostering an environment that provides opportunity. “A major part of my new position as pre-construction director will be looking at how Seymour engages with clients and stakeholders and how those relationships develop throughout the lifecycle of a project. “Seymour has always been a client focused contractor, and as a result will have been successfully trading for 40 years next year, but placing a continued importance on maintaining strong relationships, and promoting sustainable outcomes above short term gains, significantly contributes to a positive and robust future for the company.” Adam added: “I feel honoured and privileged to be promoted to director. It’s coming up to 10 years that I have been with the company and throughout that time the firm has assisted me to develop and grow. It’s now my turn to help take the business forward. “I see the appointment of a board of directors as a real statement of intent by our Managing Director Kevin Byrne. It shows his drive and determination to see Seymour grow and continue to establish itself as the leading multi-discipline civil engineering company in the North East. With the new directors in place I can only see the business going from strength to strength in the coming years.” Speaking about the latest appointments, Managing Director Kevin Byrne, said:  “As Seymour approaches its 40th anniversary I felt this was the perfect time to undertake the re-structure and introduce the board of directors to assist with making the vision we have for the company a reality. “I will be working closely with the new directors to identify both strengths and challenges within the business, allowing us to prioritise time and focus attention on the key areas. “As a team I am confident we will be able to lay the foundations for Seymour’s sustainable and structured growth going forward.” Based at Seymour House on Hartlepool Marina, Seymour Civil Engineering has enjoyed a successful year, securing and completing a number of major projects across the region. Most recently the firm celebrated a landmark contract win securing civil and infrastructure work for the £18 million exhibition development at Beamish Museum. The firm has recently started work on the £3.4 million regeneration of Church Street and Church Square in Hartlepool, working in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council, The Tees Valley Combined Authority, The Heritage Lottery Fund, and Re-form Landscape.

Warm.co.uk Says Plumbing Skills Crisis Could be Looming

It is thought that there is a very real risk of running so low on plumbers in the UK that the country could face the largest crisis they have seen in around 20 years. Warm.co.uk has said that the Government needs to do something in order to avoid drastic consequences. The heating and boiler company has said that the known on effects for businesses and consumers in the UK could be very serious if the lack of plumbers available is not addresses. More needs to be done in order to encourage more people into this industry. The plumbing industry appears to be neglected in terms of work put into attracting and training new workers. Because of this and the related lack of plumbers entering the industry, there is a crisis looming. It is thought that if this skills deficit continues on the same trajectory, there could be a time where, in larger cities, emergency call outs could take as long as 3 weeks to be solved. If situations like this begin to occur there could be a serious risk to health as well as putting businesses in danger. The increase of plumbing trainees needs to be addressed as a priority to avoid this rather bleak forecast. It has been said by the heating and boiler company Warm.co.uk that it is not too late to address this issue however, the input required in order to make a big enough difference would need to be drastic and immediate. It has also been suggested that, in order to achieve the best results, a government-led solution would be most effective. If no action is taken, there could be country-wide delays, even for emergency work. Due to the demand for plumbers, there could also be price inflation, with the few plumbers that are available charging what they wish for the work. This means that anyone who can’t afford the inflated prices are left in an even worse situation. It is thought that offering incentives for school leavers, encouraging them to go straight into apprenticeships and training for the profession, would be a great solution to ensure that the skills crisis doesn’t get any worse. Warm.co.uk have also recommended a range of other actions that could be taken in order to avoid the problems that a skills crisis would entail.

FMB Reflect on Possibility of “Hard Border” in Ireland After Brexit

If a hard border was created between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after Britain officially leave the EU, there could be untold damage caused. New research has been carried out by the Federation of Master Builders which has shown that there could be a range of negative impacts caused by the implementation of a had border separating Northern Ireland and the Republic. The research that has been carried out shows that more than half of the construction SMEs in Northern Ireland feel that a hard border would negatively impact their ability to purchase products and materials from the Republic. Almost half of the Northern Irish SMEs said that they purchase building materials and products from the Republic of Ireland, whereas a third of those that responded for the research said that they employ people who are based across the border. Just under 40% of respondents to the Federation’s research has said that a hard border in Ireland would negatively impact their ability to employ people from across the border. One in three Northern Irish builders have had their margins squeezed on projects through the depreciation of sterling following the EU referendum because of the knock on effect the vote has had on material prices. The research carried out by the Federation of Master Builders has said that the depreciation of sterling has threatened the financial stability of their business after the EU referendum. The research has clearly demonstrated how damaging for the construction industry a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland could be. A hard border could have an effect on the day-to-day running of businesses. The construction industry employs around 65,000 people and is an enabling industry, creating homes roads and schools. Any negative impact on the construction industry in Northern Ireland could have knock on effects in other industry and other areas of society.

Construction Industry Could Struggle for Workers Following Brexit

Research has shown that more than 80% of workers in the construction industry feel that Brexit will have a damaging impact on the UK’s industry and could stop high-profile government infrastructure projects being completed. A new study carried out by Researchers at Birmingham City University has been looking into the views of those working in the construction industry to gage whether they believe that jobs, projects and the industry as a whole will be affected by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. The study has shown that 88% of the workers felt that the UK relied upon the EU as a source of skilled labour. 82% felt that by leaving the EU, there would be a collapse of a number of infrastructure projects. Because of the demand for skilled workers in the industry, and the reliance upon the EU to supply the workers to meet the UK’s needs, 86% of the workers spoken to as a part of this survey said that a rise in the demand for skilled workers is expected. In line with these responses, 92% of construction workers thought that the freedom of movement would be beneficial to the construction industry in the UK. These responses have been collected from more than 50 businesses in the industry who gave feedback for the research project. One of the respondents in the research said that Brexit will make the current skills crisis significantly more intense and could then have a knock on effect on the costs of labour and therefore the costs of projects. The research carried out by the team at Birmingham City University is titled ‘Brexit: measuring the impact upon skilled labour in the UK construction industry’. The research as first formed as a part of a final year Honours Research Project (Dissertation). Since being finished, the research has been published in a leading scientific peer-reviewed research journal, the International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation. The research looks into a topical and historically unprecedented situation that is, at the moment looming over the UK construction industry. The paper also includes a number of recommendations to ease the strain on the number of skilled workers. These suggestions include retaining the free movement of workers by remaining in the European Economic Area, keeping current workers in the industry by offering increased wages and guaranteed overtime as well as reducing the physical exertion needed with the increased use of technology.
