Fermacell flags up its flooring credentials

Category: Construction Industry Today | Subscribe to Construction Industry Today Feed Published Tue, Mar 22nd 2016 A new brochure on its range of flooring systems has been published by Fermacell. Posted via Industry Today. Follow us on Twitter @IndustryToday Leading building boards manufacturer Fermacell has launched a comprehensive guide to planning and installing its dry flooring systems. The 64-page A4 manual details how Fermacell’s dry flooring systems are a practical and cost-effective alternative to conventional wet screed to concrete floors and how their excellent thermal conductivity makes them a very efficient overlay to underfloor heating systems. In addition, an optional wood fibre layer to the gypsum fibreboard base gives it excellent acoustic properties. The brochure details the advantages of working with fermacell flooring systems (their light weight and dry and fast installation times, to name just a couple) and gives an overview of areas of application such as home, office and shopping areas, and areas where people congregate, as well as the loads to factor in for each. It also advises on the substrates that fermacell flooring can be installed on (such as solid floors, timber joist floors with structural decks and trapezoidal steel sheet floors) and how they should be prepared. Step-by-step guides illustrate this process as well as how they can also be enhanced with a honeycombed acoustic infill. Specific advice is given on flooring that is exposed to moisture and humidity, where fermacell’s cement-based Powerpanel H2O can be specified. A step-by-step guide details this particular installation procedure. And a table details guideline values for tolerance levels for completed fermacell floors over coverings such as carpet, cork, ceramic tiles, parquet and laminate. Six pages are given over to example drawings of construction details for all the different flooring combinations, with another 11 pages advising on building physics and construction performance in areas such as fire protection and sound insulation. Material usage tables and installation times complete the picture.  ENDS   Source link

Olympic Park slide opens next week – jp

The final piece is now in place on the slide at the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower in London’s Olympic Park and they are ready for business. The 178-metre long and 76-metre high tunnel-slide has been added to the landmark in a bid to generate some revenue and help recoup costs. Tickets are now on sale at £10 a pop for 40 seconds of fun. The ArcelorMittal Orbit Slide opens for rides on 24th June 2016. The slide is made from 30 sections of stainless steel tube, each 800mm diameter by 3mm thick. Each is between five and nine metres long and were lifted into place by a team of specialist abseilers, using ropes and pulleys that were specially designed for this construction project. The slide has been designed by German-Belgian artist Carsten Höller. It twists and turns 12 times, including a tight corkscrew section named the ‘bettfeder’ – after the German word for bedspring. It ends with a 50-metre straight run to the ground. The initial concept of having the slide wrap around the tower was jettisoned because of its detrimental structural impact. Instead it just squiggles down one side. Construction was supervised by Mace, whose project manager Derry Power said: “This iconic project is not only going to provide another fun destination for the local community and visitors at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, but shows great collaboration between artists, designers, engineers, project managers and specialist contractors. The collaborative project team has worked tirelessly to design, develop and install a slide which will symbolise a lasting legacy at the park for years to come.” Others may see it as a metaphor for Boris Johnson, the former London mayor.. JIB launches scholarship grant

A new scholarship grant that will award £3000 to an individual studying in the electrical industry has been launched by the Joint Industry Board (JIB).   The aim of the scholarship is to promote higher level studies, such as a MA, MSc or General Law Masters degree course. Course subjects that could be covered include electrical engineering, industrial relations, employment, or other areas connected to the industry. Since 2006 the JIB Skills Development Fund has provided financial assistance to help electrical operatives further their education. Following a recent increase in applications for degree level courses, the JIB decided to launch the scholarship to support to those wishing to study at postgraduate level. Following completion of a Masters level course, there may be opportunities through the Skills Development Fund to progress to a PhD. To be eligible for the grant, candidates must be graded as an approved electrician as a minimum and either employed by a JIB member company, or registered as unemployed. Andy Reakes, secretary to the JIB Skills Development Fund explained: “The Committee is hopeful this grant can either assist someone who is undertaking a relevant Masters Degree, or provide the opportunity to someone who is considering advancing their academic understanding of the industry. Those undertaking this level of study should be commended, as it’s a difficult challenge and a genuine commitment. We hope this financial assistance eases the process.” Source link
