Northumbrian Water to Upgrade Sewerage Network with £2.5m Investment

Northumbrian Water has announced that it is to embark on a £2.5 million upgrade to its sewerage network in a County Durham town next month. Working in conjunction with Natural England, the company will start the project on Monday September 12, 2016 and will run until May next year. Involved in the work will be the replacement of the existing pipework, which is currently in a poor state of repair and is at risk of causing pollution in the Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve near Peterlee. The scheme will also see Northumbrian Water remove non-native trees, which were planted in the reserve some 40 years ago. The company said that this will “maximise benefits” for wildlife by reshaping the natural environment. The project will also see entrances and exits created from Durham Way to access the land on the north side of Castle Eden Dene. Once work has been completed, Northumbrian Water will work with Natural England to restore these. Sean Barry, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said that the project will help to protect the Dene from future pollution risks, along with the burn that runs through it. Barry added: “As someone who grew up in the area and still lives close to Castle Eden Dene, I know how important the conservation of the site is to residents and visitors, so while this is a delicate project, it will be handled with care and I look forward to leaving the dene ready for the return and resurgence of its natural species.” Meanwhile, Chris Evans, Senior Reserve Manager at Natural England, said that the scheme is a good example of how Natural England is working in conjunction with Northumbrian Water throughout the North East. Evans continued: “We will be working closely with their team and are confident there will be real benefits for wildlife on the site once works are complete.”

Food Giants Come Together for Online Sustainability Site Launch

Giant food companies have come together to launch an online sustainability site to meet changing consumer demands. Bidvest Foodservice and a ‘green alliance’ made up of giants from the food industry, including Jacobs Douwe Egberts, Vegware, Delifrance UK, Premier Foods and Unilever have launched ‘plate2planet’. This is a ‘one stop shop’ digital platform, which will aim to address the food sector’s growing demand for useful and practical information about sustainability. Head of Sustainability at Bidvest Foodservice, Shirley Duncalf, commented: “Our customers, and those of our plate2planet partners, care deeply about sustainability and operators across the industry are taking measures to tackle the challenges.” The platform will share green knowledge, including regulation guidance, supply chain stories, handy tools, case studies and best practice examples for industry workers. Duncalf said that the plate2planet initiative has a collection of knowledge that is “unparalleled” in the industry, adding: “Our aim, in sharing these resources in a single space, is to support the entire industry to make small but effective changes which can ultimately have a huge impact on a global scale, and on profit margins. “Our message is that by working together we can truly enact positive change.” The Sustainable Restaurant Association conducted a recent survey which revealed that 83% of consumers said sustainability directly affects their dining choices. Bidvest explained that caterers must now successfully navigate the challenge of making sustainable business choices, while they also face ever evolving changed to sustainability policy and regulation, as well as the demands of consumers. Duncalf added that caterers are looking to push forward successful green initiatives that add true value to their own customers, community and their bottom line. However, many of them have said that they lack the necessary resources to find new suppliers, research trends or dissect complicated reports and government documents. Also partnering on the site is Planet First, the sustainability consultancy that provides The Planet Mark a certification for organisations that want to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Construction Workers Mental Health Discussed at Seminar

Mental health volunteers have found that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than falling from heights on site. At a seminar hosted by three building engineering bodies, representatives from mental health charity Samaritans explained that the industry must pay more attention to stress and depression in the sector. Will Skinner, Samaritans Regional Partnerships Officer, commented: “With the amount of energy being put into managing physical risk; you have to question whether the industry is getting the health and safety balance right.” The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), the CIBSE Patrons and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) organised and hosted the ceremony which heard how depression and suicide was the “forgotten health and safety issue.” Paul McLaughlin, Chief Executive of BESA, chaired the event and said that according to a recent survey of ECA and BESA members, 80% of building engineering sector employers recognised that mental health was a significant issue that was already impacting upon their business. McLaughlin said: “Both large and small companies share the same concerns, but many simply don’t know how to deal with this. “The first thing you have to do is acknowledge there is an issue, which is why we are now working with Samaritans.” Every 90 minutes in the UK, someone takes their own life and in 2014, there were 6,122 recorded deaths by suicide in the UK, of which 76% were men; whereas just 1,775 people died in traffic accidents. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, with the highest suicide rate among males aged 45-59. The primary risk factors for suicide are mental illness and depression, which can be incurred by issues such as stressful working environments, drugs, alcohol and financial problems. Mr Skinner told the seminar that men from poorer economic backgrounds are also 10 times more likely to die by suicide than those who are financially better off.
