National Grid Transmission singled out for price review

Ofgem has launched a mid-period review (MPR) into price controls for National Grid Electricity Transmission and National Grid Gas Transmission to review three specific outputs. The MPR will look at whether there have been any changes to outputs relating to National Grid Gas Transmission’s Avonmouth pipeline, the number of generation connections National Grid Electricity Transmission has had to undertake, and the increase in National Grid’s system operator role. Ofgem will not be opening a review for the electricity transmission price controls for SP Transmission and Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission, or into gas distribution as it has not identified any issues that justify an MPR. Ofgem will consult on proposals for any changes to outputs and associated revenues in the summer, before making a decision in late autumn 2016 for implementation from April 1 2017. The energy industry was divided over the need for an MPR, with British Gas and Citizen’s Advice calling for one in electricity and gas transmission, and gas distribution, while network companies were concerned an MPR would effectively create two shorter four-year control periods. Ofgem said it will be inviting views on how the RIIO price control framework is working when it consults on MPR proposals in the summer “to make sure it delivers for consumers in the current controls and make sure we learn any lessons for the next round of price controls. “We will continue to monitor the performance of the regulated network companies and the drivers of this as part of the annual reporting process to satisfy ourselves that the RIIO framework is working as well as possible,” it added. Ofgem said alongside the MPR it will be reviewing other areas of concern which were raised in a consultation held by Ofgem over its proposals to hold a review, although some of this work was already in progress. These include how it holds companies to account for outputs, filling any gaps in the RIIO framework, and improving the operation of some of the incentives. This work will be undertaken across both the transmission and gas distribution price controls. Source link

Eco-friendly upgrades to make to your property

Whether you’re selling your home or just want to make some positive life changes, improving the eco-friendliness is a great way to increase your property value, reduce your costs and reduce your impact on the environment. Insulation By insulating your loft with recyclable materials you can better heat your home and consume less energy. While insulating your property can seem like a lengthy and expensive job, it is one that will likely pay for itself in time. The left/roof is the most important part of your property that needs to be insulated, around 30% of your home’s heat escapes through the walls as well, so consider for yourself how much you would like to invest in insulating your property. Plug holes Beware when it comes to covering up drafts in your home. While plugging up holes and cracks in your property can improve your energy efficiency, houses without a good source of ventilation can quickly develop problems with damp, especially old houses that deal with moisture and heat differently. To ensure that you don’t put your property at risk of damp while also ensuring that it is being heated properly, you can enquire into damp proofing services and surveys before tackling your energy efficiency. A damp survey is usually free and you can talk to the expert about the best options available to you. Energy saving There are many energy saving alternatives to products found around the home, including energy saving lightbulbs, kettles, microwaves, shower heads etc. While switching to these products might be a bit more expensive than you expected, the cost is more than worth it. These products tend to last longer than the ones you originally purchase and they can save your money on your energy bills. LED lights, for example, convert more energy into like than they do to heat, meaning that the energy isn’t wasted. You can also install a programmable thermostat to have more power over what parts of your house are heated, reducing heating costs considerably. Better windows The right windows can have a huge impact your home’s energy consumption. To start, double glazing should be a priority. They keep the heat in and the cold out as well as reducing drafts, which makes your heating more efficient and requires less energy to properly heat your property. Thick curtains are also a great insulations tool if you want to go a step further. They can keep your property warm or cool when it needs to be by keeping out the outside weather conditions. Wooden window frames are also more insulating, easier to repair and less polluting to make and they tend to be more attractive than cheap plastic framing, adding value to your property. If possible, keep your blinds or curtains out of the way during the day to make the most of natural light. Strong natural light can prevent the need to use lamps during the day. More natural light can also be useful if you decide to get a few houseplants, which can greatly improve the air quality in your home.

Government Announced a Policy that Dictates Any Land Or Buildings that Are Located by Plant Nurseries

The Government has recently announced a policy that dictates any land or buildings that are located at plant nurseries should benefit from the exemption from business rates that are seen by the agricultural sector. The Horticultural Trades Association, or HTA, has said that they welcome the Government policy change. The changes have come in to fruition after lobbying by The NFU, who has received backing from a number of different organisations. The HTA backed the NFU in their fight to change Government policy, Turner Morum LLP and the Ornamental Horticulture Roundtable have also been involved in the exemption campaign. It is thought that this policy change will allow those who are growers or involved in plant nurseries can now look at investing in the future safe in the knowledge of the business rates policy. It is thought that many of the grower members of the HTA were facing changes to their business rates this year for the first time. Previously they had been exempt due to an agricultural classification. For some businesses that have been caught up in this situation, they could have had to contend with hundreds of thousands of pounds in business rates being implemented when they were previously exempt. Such a massive increase in charges could have been disaster for some companies and seen a number of plant nurseries going out of business. The organisation worked together to lobby the government in order to get the exemption reinstated, and keep the business rates system from being applied to the plant nurseries. The lobbying has been successful and they have received a Ministerial Statement that suggests the work by the NFU, HTA and Ornamental Horticulture Roundtable Group has been successful. The announcement was made on the 30th March by Marcus Jones MP and minister for the Department for Communities and Local Government. Due to a recent Court of Appeal decision, the Valuation Office Agency were starting to increase business rates to those who were previously exempt. Due to the significant costs that could be incurred by business rates being added to the British farming industry it is important that the farming industry be exempt. The Minister then clarified that the buildings and land used for plant nurseries also receive the exemption.

IOSH’s No Time to Lose Campaign Reached a New height of Their 100th Organisation Sign Up

The IOSH’s No Time to Lose campaign was launched in 2014 in order to raise awareness amongst industry workers about occupational cancer. The campaign is spread around the world and provides businesses with free and useful resources to protect their workforce against and minimise the risks. The high-profile campaign has reached a new height as it has had their 100th organisation sign up in order to pledge their support to raising awareness about work-related cancers. This milestone has been reached after Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd signed up to the No Time to Lose pledge that includes a six-part plan that covers the important actions of organisations that are wanting to manage the exposure to carcinogens within their workplace. The action plan can be accessed by those who are planning to make changes as well as those who are already in the middle of addressing the exposure risks.   The Executive Director of Policy at IOSH, Shelly Frost has been part of the announcement of the 100th pledger during last week’s Global Asbestos Awareness Week. It has been estimated that 666,000 deaths each year worldwide are in connection to cancer that can be related back to causes from work. The biggest killer as part of this figure is asbestos, but other carcinogens such as diesel fumes, silica dust and solar radiation are also causes of workplace cancers. It is thought that through the use of the campaign and the efforts of the pledged businesses that now nearly half a million employees around the world are aware of the carcinogens mentioned above that they could come into contact with through their jobs. Although it is great to see that the campaign is expanding, there is still a lot more work that needs to be done in order to significantly reduce deaths due to carcinogen exposure in the workplace. It has been announced that next year the campaign will be releasing free resources in order to help businesses around the world raise awareness of as well as manage the exposure risk of asbestos. The campaign aims to get rid of occupational cancer.
