CITB statement on Transition Package

Steve Radley, Director of Policy at CITB says: “This summer, we set up a new employer-led Levy Working Party to scope the options for how the CITB Levy can work alongside the Apprenticeship Levy, towards a new CITB Levy Order for 2018. “Now we have further details on the Apprenticeship Levy, the Working Party can further shape ideas for how the CITB Levy can work for industry in the long term. For 2017, CITB has agreed a temporary Transition Package with industry, for firms paying both levies that year. Under this arrangement these firms will be able to claim CITB funding at an enhanced rate, capped at their level of Apprenticeship Levy contribution. These funds will primarily come from the organisation’s efficiency savings.” Source link

Indeglas wins £500,000 interior glass solutions contract on Belfast’s riverside Allstate offices

Indeglas , the Scotland headquartered business recognised as a world class supplier of interior glass solutions, is set to undertake supply work to the value of half a million pounds for purpose-built offices on Belfast’s riverside of Allstate NI, the IT support arm of Allstate Corporation, a US insurance company.  Indeglas, formerly known as Deko Scotland, is a specialist contractor and sole distributor in the UK and Ireland for the products of award-winning glass manufacturer, Deko of Denmark.  Established 17 years, Indeglas distributes and installs all over the UK and Ireland, and is one of the only full-service, Category 1 subcontractors which can source, design, and install Deko’s leading-edge glass solutions.  Jeanette MacIntyre, Managing Director, said: “As a purpose built office building, the architects, WDR-RT-Taggart of Belfast, have delivered an amazing design concept which specifies top quality materials and we are delighted that they selected DEKO glass solutions for the interior glazed screens.”  Indeglas has been contracted to provide all interior glass solutions, including meeting rooms, boardrooms and individual offices. In addition, it is providing freestanding writable screens. These high-tech screens operate like a whiteboard, but due to an interlayer within the glass, anything written or drawn on the board can be saved by camera then wiped off leaving no residue.   Indeglas’s highly skilled engineers are already on site in Belfast and work is expected to be concluded by March 2018. When complete, the purpose-built complex will comprise five storeys of riverfront office space. The principal contractors are O’Hare & McGovern, a County Down-based main contractor with over 40 years’ experience.  This is yet another repeat contract for Indeglas, which worked with O’Hare and McGovern on the new Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh and the £25 million Ballymena Health and Care Centre, the largest of its kind in Northern Ireland.  Mrs MacIntyre said: “I like to think the fact that so many contractors and architects are repeat customers is a sign of the diligence, excellence and quality of materials that Indeglas designs, supplies and installs as a matter of course.  “We are particularly proud of the freestanding writable glass solutions. The ability to have group strategy discussions, notes, ideas, and targets displayed on these attractive, interlayered  glass panels located at each desk cluster is an innovative solution which represents the kind of joined-up thinking we like to make available to all our clients.”

New Brand to Emerge in the Construction Industry

System Building Products is a new business brand specialised in the design, manufacture, and supply of external and internal solutions to the construction industry. The reason behind its establishments is the resurgence in demand for complete and integrated building systems. Chief Executive of System Building Products, John Cowley, think that “cost functionality combined with high performance, safety and aesthetics are all determined by the integration of components into a properly designed system,” hence why they have brought some of their businesses together into a single one. It unites Omnis, Britdoors, JCK, and Burgess, well-known and highly respected construction manufacturing names. The step to create a new business takes them closer to becoming a complete system provider. “Increasingly the trend in the construction industry is away from individual components and towards well-designed, properly integrated systems which are appropriately installed. By bringing our businesses together we are evolving to meet that demand,” said John Cowley. The company keeps investing in manufacturing and operations, while at the same time it focuses on the development of innovative products and services. As part of the plan, it will be offering a series of new warranty schemes, including an insurance backed product that will cover entire systems rather than individual components. The businesses that have joined System Building Products already had a reputation in the industry with a long history of landmark projects. Some of them include the roofing systems for Wembley Stadium and the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and the metal ceiling systems for the well-known One Tower Bridge development. They have also renovated the fourth span of Paddington Station’s roof, reconstituted stone panels for Royal Wharf, rainscreen cladding and framing for Ferrari’s showroom in Egham and interior acoustic solutions for the Financial Times headquarters refurbishment.

Keepmoat Homes Appoints a New Managing Director for the South

Mick O’Farrell was recently appointed as the new Regional Managing Director to support Keepmoat Homes’ growth in the South. With a vast experience in the industry for over 20 years, he worked at organisations such as Lovell Partnerships Ltd, Kier Group, and Wilson Connelly. He is thought to bring further success to the business. Mick will take care of the Southern division, which, since its establishment in 2014, it has grown considerably and achieved the number of 519 homes built in the region. His focus will not be only on providing the business with growth, but on raising awareness of Keepmoat Homes and its work to deliver much needed high quality homes. “We don’t just build homes but create thriving communities where people want to live,” explained Mick. As part of their future plans, they intend to build almost 600 homes as part of the Ebbsfleet Garden City, in Northfleet, Kent. The development will turn an unused industrial site into homes and facilities that will benefit the community. “Mick has joined us at a really exciting time as we continue to work on large ongoing projects such as the Northfleet development. We have also just started work in Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey as part of a huge regeneration project there, the first of its kind in that area,” commented Tim Beale, the Divisional Managing Director for the South, on the appointment. Keepmoat Homes and Mick share the same vision and are both passionate about building homes and communities. Together they will work on making people aware of the business and what they do, which is particularly important for the South, as it is facing a large housing shortage. The company is one of UK’s top 10 housebuilders and the leading builder for first time buyers. It holds a vast knowledge and expertise in local housing, including finance, developing and building, and design and planning. It works in partnership with other organisations from the housing sector, which usually are represented by private landowners, local authorities, housing associations, registered providers, and infrastructure organisations.

Arup Will Design the Brisbane Cruise Terminal

Arup together with architect Arkhefield managed to win the detailed design contract for the new international cruise terminal in Brisbane, Australia. The facility will cost $158 million and it will include a 9,300 m2 terminal building, a 200 metre-long wharf and public spaces with parking for cars and buses. Arup will be responsible for the detailed design and analysis of the terminal building, the wharf, and the landside civil works. “With a design team made up of more than 20 disciplines, the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is a truly multidisciplinary project and we look forward to collaborating with Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) to deliver it,” said Lloyd Twomey, part of the Arup team. The project was appointed to Arup after the firm successfully supported Port of Brisbane’s submission of a detailed business case as part of the stage 2 ‘detailed proposal’ phase of the market-led proposal. It is the second one in Queensland to advance to the delivery phase. Commenting on this achievement, Lloyd said that “with a strong understanding of key project challenges, opportunities and stakeholders, we were able to realise significant cost savings and deliver a value for money solution that was instrumental in PBPL’s proposal being accepted by the Queensland government.” The construction of the wharf is booked to start in the middle of this year. Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants, and technical specialists, working across all the aspects of today’s built environment. It has its quarters in London, employing more than 13,000 specialists in 90 different disciplines in approximately 35 countries. One of the company’s most known projects is the design of the London Olympic Games arena, home for 10,000 athletes, 800,000 spectators and 21,000 members of the media.

Where’s the best place to buy a house in 2018? According to the experts

In 2018, the path towards buying a house looks likely to be strewn with obstacles. Interest rates could rise further in the wake of the base-rate increase from 0.25% to 0.5% The Guardian reports, while Brexit could also weigh down on the market – albeit in ways that currently cannot be easily foreseen. These twin spectres could necessitate homebuyers becoming more particular regarding where in the country they buy; the following areas look set to be relatively promising property hotspots in 2018. Croydon, London The recent arrival of the Boxpark retail centre in Croydon has helped this London borough to enjoy something of a renaissance in reputation. Another shopping centre, Westfield, is also on the way and should further help nudge up property prices in the area. In an Express article, Tim Mycock, Development Director at Reditum Capital, observes that those prices are currently roughly £185,000 beneath the London average. This helps to explain why you can expect great value for money in Croydon, despite a 20% rise in its property prices in 2016. Salford, Greater Manchester Media giants the BBC and ITV have recently chosen the Greater Manchester city of Salford as an office base. Furthermore, largely due to the £1 billion investment recently poured into Salford’s MediaCityUK development, Manchester has cemented its place among the UK’s leading tech hubs. Therefore, Salford is an ideal place to move to should you be eyeing a creative or digital career; Amion forecasts that Greater Manchester’s workers in these sectors will number 27% more by 2034. Liverpool, Merseyside With much housing currently being regenerated in Liverpool, you shouldn’t be surprised if the Merseyside city’s property prices soon rise. In fact, those in the L1 postcode area recently have – by a staggering 41.2%. Hence, you might want to buy a Liverpool home sooner rather than later. The city is also an ideal place to invest in student property – as, while house prices in Liverpool are low, the large number of students has helped make rental values – and, thus, rental yields – high. Luton, Bedfordshire Like Croydon, the Bedfordshire town of Luton warrants shaking off its negative image from the past. These days, Luton could be deemed unjustly overlooked; it is well-supplied with good schools. That should hearten parents; several secondary schools locally have attracted “good” ratings from Ofsted. Property here is varied, too. Whether you want a new-build home, Thirties semi or something in-between, you’re covered. However, the town’s average house price remains a low £252,896. Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire Though less well-known than St Albans in the same county, Berkhamsted offers more for the money you would pay. Local attractions include the National Trust-run Ashridge Estate and twice-weekly market. Jamie Dyson of estate agents Brown & Merry has praised Berkhamsted to the London Evening Standard, calling the area “the perfect commuter town”. Homes here are varied, and improving them doesn’t have to be hard. Despite the town’s country location, a local resident can still easily receive a folding door to be fitted by Bifold Shop.

Five interior design trends for 2018

“New year, new me” for 2018? It doesn’t have to stop at changing your lifestyle. Breathing new life into your home with a change in design can be one way to refresh your mind, and there are a number of key trends that will be making their mark in interior design over the next year. If you’re not looking to completely redecorate your home in the new year, there are a few simple ways you can incorporate these trends into your own home. Here are some of the key trends to look out for: Japanese wabi-sabi will replace Scandi-living trends of 2017 Following the Scandi trend-wave of 2017 that brought us hygge and lagom, the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi welcomes the idea of seeing beauty in the imperfect and is set to make its way into our homes in 2018. This means your home doesn’t have to look like a showroom everyday. Instead, emphasise the use of organic materials and embrace authenticity, even if it is a little off-kilter. For a few statement pieces to create a wabi-sabi aesthetic, consider handmade pottery and glasswares with subtle imperfections. Interior design brand Sansho sources handmade products from traditional artisans in the Far East, meaning no two pieces of their Japanese homeware are identical. A paper lamp shade, earthenware vase, or even a set of decorative dishes can subtly inject a bit of wabi-sabi into your home, without you needing to redecorate your entire home and ensuring no one else has the same item as you. Contemporary wallpaper will overtake painted walls Gone are the days of only being able to find wallpaper in your grandma’s house. Solid blocks of colour on your walls will remain on trend, but designers will look towards patterned wallpapers rather than vibrant paints to keep homes looking contemporary and fresh. Simply adding wallpaper to your walls is a quick and relatively easy way to update any room, and won’t necessarily break the bank. However, it’s important to take care when applying a patterned paper, as you want to ensure the pattern lines up with each sheet, to avoid any uneven lines. Rebecca Atwood is just one designer offering printed paper in pale shades, as well as bright colours and cool, neutral tones, giving a chic finish to any room. Jewel tones will complement feature wallpapers Deep, jewel shades are set to make their mark over the next year in interior design, and Pantone has even announced its Colour of the Year as Ultra Violet. The deep purple shade works well as a wall colour for living rooms, or can be added to your home to provide a contrast to bright furniture. The shade has both warm and cool temperatures, allowing it to be paired with a wide range of shades, depending on your tastes. If purple isn’t your colour, Sherwin-Williams also opted for a deep jewel tone with its colour of 2018, and announced Oceanside as its shade. The marine colour includes shades of blues and greens, and is said to help boost creative thinking. Velvet will bring a touch of opulence to our homes According to design experts, velvet is set to make a comeback in our homes. Interior designer Jade Nottage has claimed we can expect to see velvet everywhere, particularly in the winter months at the start of the year. This retro Gatsby-inspired movement can bring a touch of opulence to your home, whether that’s in the form of cushions, throws, sofas or chairs. There is no set colour palette for velvet either, meaning you can customise the shade for your own taste. Take inspiration from the 70s with shapely furniture Curved sofas and rounded furniture are also back, with 70s-inspired silhouettes offering a stylish addition to otherwise box-shaped rooms. According to New York-based architect Elizabeth Roberts, a curved sofa offers a “current” alternative to the L-shaped sectionals and look great from all angles. At the 2017 Milan Furniture Fair, a usually reliable precursor to the following year’s biggest trends, many designers unveiled puffy, curved and plump furniture shapes. Swedish designers Note unveiled La Isla, which perfectly captures the soft and shapely furniture we can expect to see in the new year.
