UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP OFFERS STUDENTS ARCHITECTURAL INSIGHT AT RG+P

Multi-disciplinary architectural practice, rg+p has partnered with Nottingham Trent University to offer students a practical insight into the design of educational and learning environments. The Leicester-based firm has undertaken lectures and workshops with undergraduates from the Nottingham Institute of Education as part of their ‘Designing Spaces for Learning’ module. Principal landscape architect, Julian Gladman and head of interiors, Ian Matthews have delivered two lectures at the University’s Clifton Campus as well as hosted 30 students at rg+p’s Leicester office to provide real life examples of the environment and business of architecture. Julian Gladman said: “We’ve just completed a short series of lectures with students from the BA (Hons) Education Studies course to broaden their understanding of the role design plays in the development of a learning environment such as school or college. Our lectures were written specifically for the course and covered current design practices, the best approach to learning space design including the associated limitations and challenges as well as the importance of preparing an integrated design throughout a project’s lifecycle to ensure end users remain engaged. To further enhance this, we invited the students to our office to observe how it’s used as a learning and collaborative space as well as visualise how the design of our ‘own space’ came to life, providing a practical example for them to draw upon. “Our practice ethos is focused on collaboration and teaching so it’s really important to not just offer opportunities like this for aspirational architects but also for our own architectural trainees, who were very involved in the development of content for lectures and during the presentations at the office.” Following the success of the inaugural visit, rg+p has committed to host a further 25 students at their city centre office on Thursday 29th March. Sarah Davies, senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University commented: “rg+p’s sessions have been extremely informative and engaging, providing a breadth and depth of information about a variety of design contexts and schemes. Our students have been really positive; commenting on how much they appreciate time with industry professionals and the opportunity to tour and learn from a real working environment. This has been a hugely successful partnership so far and we’re now looking forward to our next visit.” rg+p’s work in the education sector is extensive, encompassing a phased development masterplan over 20 years at Grantham College, Lincolnshire; a £2.2m extension to Redbridge Primary School in Ilford, North London; and the award-winning conversion of two Victorian school buildings in Leicester into a permanent base for the RSSB to host meetings, seminars and spiritual teachings.

Holder Mathias completes ‘Livin’ student resi scheme in Cardiff city centre

Holder Mathias has completed work on a 136 student ‘studio’ bedroom development called “Livin” at 21-27 City Road in the centre of Cardiff. In support of the regeneration of this important student area, the Livin scheme has been designed as a simple, yet eye-catching addition to the diverse and eclectic mix of properties that characterise City Road. The result is a building with a well-proportioned composition and a striking frontage, comprising port-hole windows and a finely profiled metal sheet cladding that together provide a rhythmic rigour and a richly textured finish. Conceived to express the typological nature of student residential accommodation, this architectural design is combined with a palette of materials that promote a positive visual dialogue with the other buildings on City Road, enriching the streetscape. To fulfil the site’s maximum development potential, Holder Mathias considered it as three sections, with floor plans, sections and elevations disposed and configurated to be responsive to the site’s unique geometry. Existing and emerging building concepts were used to determine the height of the six-storey block, ensuring it complements the profile of surrounding developments. Stephen Hill, partner at Holder Mathias, which is based in Cardiff, said: “In response to the eclectic nature of City Road, the new Livin student residential block at 21-27 City Road marks the start of a ‘redevelopment renaissance’ in the area, providing it with a vibrant and visually striking addition to the street scene, as well as a quality benchmark for the continued redevelopment of this well-connected area.” The scheme is situated within easy walking distance of city centre amenities and key public transport nodes, including rail and bus routes. Directors at Modra Investments Ltd, added: “As a student accommodation developer, we are always proud to be part of the redevelopment of an area. We believe that the Livin City Road student site design promotes an exciting aesthetic whilst setting a design benchmark for the overall street scene.”

J F Finnegan Builds DB Cargo’s New Warehouse

DB Cargo UK, the rail freight operator, will be opening their new 70,000 sq ft warehouse called Wolverhampton Logistics Centre this autumn. The centre will increase the current capability of storing and handling steel coils by 1,944 coils, giving a total capacity of 3,325 coils, which is 40,000 tonnes of steel. The coils are transported by the company via rail to the site and then distributed to manufacturers across the West Midlands to produce products such as white goods and cars. J F Finnegan is the Principal Contractor responsible for the design and construction of the Logistics Centre, as well as the coordinator of the installation of the new internal rail line. “We are delighted to be working with DB Cargo UK and William Saunders (Employers Agent) on this project. Our extensive experience of working within the manufacturing and industrial sectors was fundamental in securing this scheme,” said Paul Ballantyne, Commercial Manager at J F Finnegan Limited. Based in Sheffield, J F Finnegan Limited was established in 1945 and specialises in industrial, manufacturing, and retail schemes. The work on site commenced at the beginning of this month, while the steel frame is due for erection in late April with the completion of the scheme anticipated in autumn 2018. DB Cargo UK started manufacturing in Wolverhampton back in 1966 and since then they have been making significant investments on site and creating job opportunities for the local community. It is the largest freight haulier in the UK and it operates freight and infrastructure services, as well as passenger charter trains throughout the country. It transports a multitude of freight, including intermodal containers, metals, coals, biomass and aggregates. By providing a full range of logistics, supply chain and associated services, customers can choose a single supplier to transport freight all around the UK, on time and with minimal environmental impact.

Pura Facades delivers a ‘perfect finish’ for London’s Hallsville Quarter

Pura Facades, the specialist distributor of natural cladding solutions, has successfully completed a project to supply 8,000m2 formed and flat panels to the Hallsville Quarter in Canning Town, London. Worth in the region of £2.8m the contract demonstrates the complete cladding solution provided by Pura, from panel designs and fixing system drawings to logistics, and aftercare such as snagging resolution and O&M manual document preparation. Working closely with main contractor Bouygues, Pura supplied non-flammable Rieder GRC (glass reinforced concrete) panels, which were an expedient and lightweight alternative to traditional pre-cast or traditional GRC concrete facades. Consulting with the project architects also enabled Pura to consider innovative ways of achieving their visual intent with large format shaped panels spanning floor to floor. James Butler, director of Pura Facades, explains: “While it was originally proposed that traditional GRC or pre-cast concrete should be used on the vertical columns of the building, we suggested using lightweight, thinner-formed GRC panels, which were easier to transport (lowering carbon emissions) and far simpler to erect. Our ability to cut and shape panels to exact tolerances meant that no heavy lifting equipment was needed on site as every panel was lifted into position.” While each panel is cut to size and delivered with its own fixing system, one of the most demanding challenges of the project lay in the logistics. Given the fact that inner city construction projects now need to operate from a ‘postage stamp’ building site footprint, Pura’s experience in sequencing, labelling, palletising and batching to deliver according to build sequence was invaluable. Butler continues: “With such tightly controlled arrival hours – with no option for trucks to park up and wait for their delivery slot – we needed to make sure our logistics operation was up to scratch. Ensuring the correct batches of formed cut-to-size panels arrived at just the right time, every time, was a tough challenge, but one that we met using our Birmingham and North London based hubs and the right type of transport.” The project was not completely over for Pura, even once the cladding was fixed, as the team provided the contractor with complete data sheets and instructions on the products used, cleaning kits and repair toolkits. “We don’t just walk away once the cladding is up,” says Butler. “We take project completion very seriously and want to provide the contractor and architect with the confidence that the vision for the building is fully delivered.” Pura Facades is part of the Vivalda Group plc and provides a fully made to order service to architects, specifiers and contractors, supplying natural cladding products from respected brands including Rieder, Faveton. Laudescher and Veta France.

RizkMcCay Talks About the Importance of Branding

The construction industry contributes to the UK economy with nearly £90 billion, which represents 6.7% of the wider total. Site developers and building firms know how important branding is to keep up those numbers and to offer further understanding in this matter, Helen Andrews, account director at RizkMcCay, a creative design and strategic marketing business with a proven track record of helping organisations in the built environment achieve their business objectives, will offer some insight. The ultimate goal of a site developer, whether it is in housing development, town centre regeneration, new retail offering or educational facilities, is to attract further investment. To do so, solid branding and marketing are key in making a project stand out in the competitive market. As an example, Helen mentions the regeneration projects and the always-asked question of ‘Does the site need a name?’ The answer is simple; if you want your project to be taken seriously then you need to give it a name. For a regeneration project, the aim is to show the public and the stakeholders the benefits it will bring to the local, regional and wider economy. In order to develop a strong brand concept, always think about the importance of the scheme to the local area. This process is done backwards, starting with the analysis of the various stakeholders involved and further developing a set of values. Important questions include: Why are they passionate about this development? What makes it different from the others? How is it going to change people’s lives? Wherever possible, try and humanise the brand so that people understand exactly why this development is happening in their town or city and how it will benefit them. Having a strategic marketing plan and robust brand in the built environment can go a long way to not only making a site a success but also to winning people over where developments are tricky or slightly contentious.

Stephen George + Partners Wins Planning Permission for Metro Centre

The £8 million Metro Maintenance and Renewals Skills Centre in South Shields has received planning permission. Stephen George + Partners, one of the UK’s leading architectural practices, will be working on this pivotal regeneration project, which is a flagship development that promises to bring skills and new employment into the region. SGP worked together with contractor Galliford Try Infrastructure and developed a 33,500 sq ft single building option that will accommodate a training centre and light maintenance facility, meeting the client’s budget whilst maintaining the facilities’ operational requirements. The development will be unified, having the training centre wrapped around the light maintenance area. The accommodation will be stacked vertically, allowing the reception and the break-out spaces to overlook the main entrance, while keeping classroom, meeting and engineering activities clearly split between floors. “This is a key milestone, enabling the team to now focus on the construction stage of the Metro Skills and Renewals Centre,” explained Alistair Branch, Director at Stephen George + Partners. “SGP is pleased that with this decision and their continued support, Nexus and Galliford Try will realise the delivery of a facility that will maintain the future of the Metro fleet and train the drivers and engineers of tomorrow.” The Metro Maintenance and Renewals Skills Centre will contain classrooms, staff rooms, offices, meeting rooms, canteen and changing facilities, an enclosed light maintenance area, including train inspection pits, a platform and mock station. It will provide training for more than 1,000 people working on the Metro, such as contractors involved in the £350 modernisation of the urban rail system used by 40 million passengers a year. In addition, an external training track facility will be built to the west of the building. The construction work is due to begin in late spring. Stephen George + Partners specialises in masterplanning and the transport, residential, industrial, logistics, office, education and retail sectors.
