Exclusive: Tender price inflation to peak in 2017

The consultant has revised down its forecast since the start of the year after reporting a reduction in tendering activity since Q1. Materials prices have recorded an increase; steel in particular has shown signs of rebounding in the first half of the year, with double-digit price increases reported. Overall, materials prices have seen a 3 per cent increase over the last quarter, putting additional cost pressure on tender pricing. However, labour will remain the main driver of price pressure over the next few years. The consultant reported that contractors are still being selective when bidding for projects, and forecast a downturn in tender prices beyond 2017 as a number of major infrastructure schemes come to an end and activity begins to slow. It also predicted that growth in construction activity would show signs of tempering beyond 2017. Source link

ETS Cable Components: New ‘No Bolts’ Cleat Is Launched

ETS Cable Components are proud to be part of the development and subsequent launch of a new cleat which requires no traditional fixings to be secured in place. The design also allows for additional cleats to be stacked on top of one another with nothing more than a small turn of a fixing lock. The concept was driven by an initial discussion with Network Rail who contacted ETS to enlist our help in finding a cable fixing cleat solution to alleviate a critical health and safety issue. Following subsequent design meetings and the continual evolution of the design concept over the last year, the finished product is now ready. Some key features include: No bolts – allowing for rapid installation through a simple ‘turn and lock’ mechanism onto containment Easily stackable – additional cables can be added without disturbing existing installations Manufactured from London Underground 1-085 approved material Suitable for fixing cables ranging from 18-55mm in diameter ETS Cable Components’ Operations Director, Kevin Moloney, said: “It was a privilege to get the initial call from Network Rail requesting our help to come up with a suitable cleating solution. This is testament to our reputation in solving problems for customers. “The whole process from initial design meeting to approving the prototype progressed extremely quickly and it was helped greatly by the ingenuity of the design from Ellis Patents and by the determination of Network Rail in their desire to see improvements to the network and safeguard the safety of those working on it.”

Sintons bags major contract win with the NHS

Law firm, Sintons has continued to build its national reputation in healthcare through its latest major NHS framework appointment. The Newcastle-based firm, one of the UK’s leading specialist healthcare advisors, has been appointed to the legal services framework of the NHS Shared Business Services (NHSSBS), a body which provides business support services to the NHS with the aim of delivering efficiencies and increased quality. Following a competitive tender process, Sintons has won a place on the organisation’s legal services framework for the first time, which will see it being able to provide services to NHS Trusts and other bodies across the country. Sintons has been appointed to all eleven lots tendered by NHS SBS covering legal practice areas including NHS governance and public law, primary care, mental health law, employment law, commercial, property, construction, IT, corporate finance and PFI/PPP projects. The appointment will be initially for two years from June 1, 2018, with an option to extend for a further two years. This follows last year’s appointment to the North of England NHS Commercial Procurement Collaborative (NOE CPC) which works with more than 80 high-level NHS organisations across England. Amanda Maskery, partner and head of NHS healthcare at Sintons, said: “Our team has worked hard to build its reputation in the healthcare sector, and we have become trusted specialist advisors to NHS Trusts, GPs, dentists and other healthcare organisations across the UK. “Our latest appointment to the NHS SBS legal services framework is a further endorsement of our capability, expertise and genuine understanding of the complexities of the NHS, which very few other law firms can rival. “We are delighted to be working with NHS SBS in supporting them to achieve their ambitious cost savings targets for the NHS, and our healthcare team is well equipped and ideally placed to assist.”

JG Hale Construction to Launch New Company

The increasing demand for modular construction solutions in the UK has prompted Seven Oaks Timber Frame, part of construction company JG Hale Construction, to be turned into a separate limited company and rebranded as Seven Oaks Modular. The new company will be managed by Charlotte Hale, with Jonathan Hale, chairman of JG Hale Construction, becoming its chairman. Seven Oaks has an order book in excess of £10.5 million with tier one contractors and large property developers, anticipating year-on-year growth of more than 15%. This growth is partly driven by government initiatives to build more homes quickly. Modular construction cuts time on site to almost half, meaning that even though components and materials are more expensive than traditional ones, the overall cost is the same, if not cheaper. It also incorporates greater quality and precision from the factory installed components and material, matching customer expectations, end user and market requirements. Seven Oaks Modular is extending its product offering to incorporate windows, doors and external cladding into its prefabricated timber frame panels, with a plan to offer fully modular volumetric buildings in the future. It has also invested in research into developing bathroom and kitchen pods, CLT and other modular renewable products and solutions. Moreover, the company will also invest £2 million in expanding its production facilities and increasing the size of its workforce. Its plans include moving into new premises, increasing the company’s capacity threefold from 1,000 homes per year to 3,000 per year. “We’ve listened to our customers and, with an evidently increased demand for offsite manufacturing, we’ve decided to introduce a more modular approach to our product offerings. There is a big housing shortage in the UK and this approach has the potential to help solve that in a quicker and more efficient way,” said Charlotte Hale, manager of Seven Oaks Modular.

Asset in Central Amsterdam Acquired by Round Hill

A Central Amsterdam asset – Ring Park – has been acquired by Round Hill Capital, a leading real estate investment, development and asset management firm, and  Boelens de Gruyter, a real estate developer, for potential refurbishment and expansion. The acquisition also represents an opportunity for significant residential redevelopment. Located near the A10 ring-road in Central Amsterdam, the 11,804 m2 site is in a ‘residential acceleration area’ designed by the Municipality for potential residential (re)zoning, in order to meet the strong and increasing demand for housing in Amsterdam. “The local Municipality recognises the need for the development of more residential accommodation to meet the persisting supply/demand fundamentals in Amsterdam and this asset is right in the middle of a site already set aside as a potential new urban housing neighbourhood just 10 minutes by bike or tram to the city centre,” said Maarten de Gruyter, director of Boelens de Gruyter. This acquisition reflects the continuing expansion of Round Hill’s urban regeneration and development strategy in the Netherlands. Back in February of this year, the firm, together with Boelens de Gruyter and G&S Vastgoed, bought approximately 4.5 ha (43,000 m²) in Merwede Canal Zone in Utrecht to be developed into a new urban neighbourhood. “Round Hill has a well-established and successful investment and development track record and asset management expertise across Europe, and this acquisition site further enhances our platform in the Netherlands, which remains a key focus for our strategy. The asset has significant asset management opportunities and potential residential redevelopment and we believe that it provides an exceptional opportunity to provide additional housing which is required to support continued population growth in Amsterdam,” said Michael Bickford, founder and CEO of Round Hill Capital. Over the past four years, Round Hill has successfully established its residential investment and asset management platform in the Netherlands and has acquired more than 10,000 Dutch residential units throughout this period. Across Europe, Round Hill has acquired and managed more than 100,000 residential units and has a significant and growing development pipeline.

40,000 construction workers can now see through concrete with their phone

More than 40,000 construction workers worldwide can now see through walls with their smartphone. The new Dalux Field app can show a mix of reality and 3D construction models much like the HoloLens. “It has great potential and both workers and clients are excited”, says Digital Manager from Willmott Dixon Construction, who tested the augmented reality on four projects.   The new Dalux app is leading the way worldwide in showing 3D construction models with augmented reality (AR) on smartphones. The software company – who targets the UK as one of their main markets – has now made their solution available to all modern Android and iOS phones.   This means that the tens of thousands of construction workers at companies who already use Dalux, like Willmott Dixon Construction, can see a mix of reality and the 3D model depending on their location and what they are looking at – by simply pointing the mobile camera at various elements in an ongoing construction.   Digital Manager at Willmott Dixon Construction Limited, Andrew Gamblen, has tested Dalux and the augmented reality on four projects varying in size from 4 to 25 million pounds.   – The technology is absolutely brilliant. It is very easy to use and can be accessed on a large number of devices – making it much easier for everyone on-site to visualize exactly what we are building, Andrew Gamblen says.   International interest Dalux co-founder Bent Dalgaard reports that construction companies from all over the world have been calling Dalux to hear about their new groundbreaking technology.   – Earlier, it was only one type of Android phone that could show augmented reality. Now it is open to a huge workforce, so we expect to see augmented reality spread fast in the construction industry, says Dalux co-founder Bent Dalgaard.   Willmott Dixon Construction: Dalux has great potential Willmott Dixon expects to be more efficient and experience less issues on-site because workers can see where each element should be, how they should look and be installed – all in real-time. It can also help solve issues a lot quicker, since it is always clear who is responsible for each task on each element in the system.   – The workers on-site are excited. Even though not all are using it every day, they still check each time something has been installed and see if there are any issues. They no longer have to run back and forth to the office, Andrew Gamblen says.   Since most people outside the construction industry struggle with imagining how a building will eventually look by seeing 2D-drawings, Willmott Dixon is experiencing enthusiasm from clients who have been using Dalux to see what their contractors are building for them and how far they are in the process.   – We work with a lot of information heavy construction models and if a system cannot handle large amounts of data we have no use for them. Dalux displays everything in a fast, simple and stable application, Andrew Gamblen says.   The company behind the AR-technology, Dalux, has grown from 20 to 55 employees in one and a half year and is present in 100 countries with the UK as a key market. Dalux was highlighted in the GO Initiative of the Year Award as the BIM solution used when Armagh Campus won the GO Award for Procurement Innovation in May 2018.
