GMI announces contract to build new £25m Hampton by Hilton hotel in York

Construction work has begun on the new hotel situated in the heart of York city centre, in Piccadilly within the Castle Gateway district. GMI Construction Group has announced the award of a contract by Avantis Hotels to build a 143-bedroom Hilton York Piccadilly hotel in the heart of York city centre. Construction work on the £25M project has commenced with the hotel due for completion in the first quarter of 2021, at which point it is expected that 50 full and part-time jobs will be generated. Avantis Hotels, which already owns and operates the Hampton by Hilton York in nearby Toft Green is developing the Piccadilly site, which most recently housed offices, a carpark and a motorcycle accessory shop. Piccadilly itself is situated in the Castle Gateway district of the city, and, together with neighbouring streets, has been identified by the City Council as an area for major regeneration and redevelopment. In addition to its 143 guest bedrooms, the hotel site will also include eight luxury private residences all enjoying uninterrupted views of Clifford’s Tower, going on sale in late 2020. The scheme is designed to the latest BREEAM standards and will boast cycle parking bays and a number of electric-vehicle charging points. A detailed and complimentary landscape design acknowledges the sensitive nature of its surroundings – something guests can enjoy from the hotel’s terrace that overlooks Clifford’s Tower. Talking about the project GMI Divisional Managing Director Lee Powell said: “We are very pleased to be appointed by Avantis to deliver this major new hotel development and to play a role in the regeneration of York’s Piccadilly district. This project is the second major hotel development that GMI have been entrusted to deliver this year following the completion and handover of the stunning new 137-bedroom luxury Dakota Hotel development in Manchester in June. Once completed this new hotel will be the 11th hotel project delivered to date by GMI for high profile customers including The Dakota Group, Premier Inn, Travelodge, IBIS Styles and Millennium & Copthorne in prime city centre locations across the Midlands and North. Also commenting Ravi Majithia, Avantis Hotels’ development director, said: “The Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly is an incredibly exciting prospect and is a significant investment for us. We are confident it will help breathe new life into a part of York that lacks activity yet has envious views overlooking the River Foss, facing one of York’s most popular attractions. Our design team, many of whom are local professionals, have worked closely with the city planners to ensure the hotel’s design is not only sympathetic to its surroundings, but one that brings real benefits to the environment. The Hilton brand is recognised and respected world-wide and our new Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly will complement our existing Hampton by Hilton York at Toft Green. We are excited to bring Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly to the city. We selected a great creative design team and highly capable contractor with a proven track record of delivering major hotel developments across the north of England, including Leeds and Manchester. Avantis has a long-term interest in the growing success of York’s local economy and this investment demonstrates our confidence in its strength. It is a wonderful city and we are privileged to play our part in York City Council’s plans to reinvigorate and revitalise Piccadilly.”

Mannings Regeneration Plan Approved

Mannings Regeneration Plan Approved

Adur District Council has approved a planning application for the regeneration of The Mannings in Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex, designed by AHR for Southern Housing Group. The regeneration on Surry Street will see the existing, aged 40-flat building replaced by 74 welcoming and attractive new homes, 100% affordable, with a mix of social rent and shared ownership tenures. All homes at The Mannings will enjoy access to a private balcony or terraced gardens, plus a communal roof-top garden and enhanced public realm. WaiLun Ho, director at AHR, said: “The Mannings will bring value to the community with a development that sets a new standard for living in the local area, enabling the neighbourhood to flourish. We have created a living environment that will be desirable and safe, encourages environmentally friendly travel with 86 bicycle spaces and complements the wider context and architectural styles to ensure the residents’ will feel at home. “The affordable accommodation will help more people take their first step to buy their own home. We’re thrilled that it’s had planning approval granted and look forward to continuing to work with Southern Housing Group towards our shared vision for the area.” The Mannings follows AHR’s previous collaboration with Southern Housing Group on Passivhaus scheme Cameron Close in the Isle of Wight, also made up of entirely affordable housing. Cathy Bacon, head of regeneration at Southern Housing Group, said: “We are delighted the Council has approved this much-needed investment. It will benefit the residents of The Mannings and the wider community. Of course, Southern Housing Group will be working closely with the existing residents, neighbours and the council to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum and properly managed. This redevelopment scheme is part of our long-term commitment to Shoreham. It is great to know that the Council shares our vision.” Resident consultation throughout has ensured the input of the community’s aspirations into the design, with key priorities of inclusiveness and accessibility being met, as well the creation of an engaging and transparent development. Cllr Brian Boggis, executive member for regeneration at Adur District Council’s added on the planning decision: “The Mannings redevelopment is a great example of how developments that include genuine regeneration can deliver real benefits for Shoreham. This scheme will help to revive a local area, promote cleaner transport and improve housing options for local people.” AHR is working across several areas in the south and further afield on residential regeneration projects, with recently completed schemes including The Ridgeway in Hertford, Peterhead Court in Ealing, London and Wallis Fields in Maidstone.

Motorway Project Moves Forward

Key work on the M6 J13-15 smart motorway project has brought the scheme a step closer to completion. Kier Highways successfully installed three large cantilever gantries over a nine-night period while the motorway network remained open to customers. Three gantries weighing 24 tonnes and 18m in width now span the carriageway on the M6 between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke) and were installed with a contraflow in operation. This meant that one lane of traffic was able to stay on the main motorway carriage travelling north on the southbound side. Traffic on the southbound side ran in three narrow lanes. Customers were able to continue travelling on their preferred route instead of being diverted along sensitive diversion routes around Stafford. A team of 57 people worked each of the nine nights to install the gantries along with six smaller MS4 gantries and 28 lighting columns. This project is the first of its kind to operate under a full contraflow for the length of the works and its implementation is continuously increasing customer satisfaction through the roadworks. As work progresses to the opposite carriageway, the contraflow operation will switch in the New Year. Richard French, project director at Kier Highways, said: “We are coming to the end of a section of work on the northbound M6 and this critical activity makes the end date significantly closer. All teams have planned their activities meticulously and collaboratively, so that the result is completion to plan and on programme. There is a large amount of personnel involved and I would like to thank everyone for their solid performance during this complex activity.” The M6 J13-15 smart motorway project is scheduled for completion by 2022.
