Hedgehog Havens: commercial security fencing solutions for hedgehog protection

Hedgehog Havens: commercial security fencing solutions for hedgehog protection

Jacksons Fencing, a renowned supporter of wildlife conservation, is making significant strides in promoting hedgehog-friendly security fencing. In 2015, the company became the first British fencing manufacturer to introduce a hedgehog-friendly timber gravel board, for residential use. This breakthrough innovation is compatible with their timber fence panels and slotted posts. This pioneering product not only safeguards fence panels from ground contact but also incorporates a designated hole to facilitate the passage of hedgehogs. This seemingly small modification plays a crucial role in combating the declining population of hedgehogs by providing them with convenient access between areas for essential activities like foraging and mating. Pushing boundaries Recognising the need to extend this initiative beyond residential gardens, Jacksons Fencing is aiming to tackle the matter of hedgehog-friendly fencing in commercial sites too. The company aims to raise awareness among architects, specifiers, and end-users about the availability of hedgehog-friendly fencing options and the importance of incorporating them in their projects. Certain commercial fencing types, such as mesh fencing with larger apertures: V mesh, twin wire panels, and chain link, for example, have recently come under scrutiny due to their potential to trap or endanger hedgehogs. Although attempts to create openings or holes in these fences have been made, they often prove ineffective as hedgehogs may not be aware of such access points or may not be able to navigate them safely. This revelation has prompted Jacksons Fencing to advocate for the species by highlighting alternative products that prioritise both wildlife preservation and high security requirements of sites which require security fencing, where suitable. Safe and secure solutions  Among the recommended solutions, vertical bar fencing emerges as the optimal choice, as it seamlessly integrates security and hedgehog-friendly features. With gaps between pales designed to adhere to anti-trap regulations, hedgehogs can navigate through the fencing effortlessly, ensuring their safety. These fences also feature sturdy construction, concealed, tamper-proof fixings, an attractive appearance, and minimal obstruction to visibility, making them an ideal choice for various applications. Additionally, Jacksons Fencing highlights the advantages of high concealment mesh fencing, particularly their innovative EuroGuard® Combi product. This solution combines rigid V mesh panels with interlaced wooden slats, delivering both privacy and a natural aesthetic while upholding the strength and security expected from a steel mesh fence. The incorporation of timber slats effectively covers mesh gaps, preventing hedgehogs from getting stuck while still providing a secure enclosure. A race against time Considering hedgehogs have been listed as vulnerable to extinction since 2020, Jacksons Fencing is dedicated to actively raising awareness of this pressing issue and promoting the adoption of hedgehog-friendly alternatives. Action is being taken by UK charities. A ‘Hedgehog Friendly Fencing’ campaign was recently launched by Hedgehog Street, a collaboration between People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). Central to the campaign is the establishment of ‘Hedgehog Highways’ as the industry standard in garden fencing, which we applaud. Peter Jackson, Managing Director, Jacksons Fencing says, “Jacksons Fencing has championed Hedgehog Highways for several years. We have updated our product literature, specifications, and online content to educate our customers and specifiers about the availability and benefits of wildlife-friendly fencing options. Prioritising hedgehog preservation and conservation, is just one example of our commitment to sustainability and the well-being of wildlife.” For more information about hedgehog-friendly commercial fencing, please click here. Haddonstone stepping up on sustainability

Haddonstone stepping up on sustainability

Toby Marlow, Building and Construction team director, discusses Haddonstone’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment. The construction industry is one of the UK’s biggest contributors to carbon emissions and environmental pollution. How would you summarise Haddonstone’s commitment to sustainability? Haddonstone is proudly committed to sustainability and we continually strive towards reducing our impact on both society and the environment.  Sustainability policies are embedded across our production processes, including having protocols in place to avoid the use of hazardous substances and prevent the release of contaminants into the atmosphere or watercourses as well as onto land.   All measures are carried out in accordance with Environment Agency regulations. Are there any new initiatives which can be shown to be cutting Haddonstone’s environmental footprint? As well as actively cutting power consumption through the use of low energy lighting, turning off equipment when not in use and switching to renewable sources, we use batch production wherever possible to reduce waste; and also employ ‘vapour curing’ instead of wasteful spraying alternatives to save water. Then there is an on-going project with Cranfield University.  Initially, this involved assessing the carbon footprint of cast stone. This has resulted in efficiencies across our production and is helping us work towards becoming carbon neutral. Interestingly, a study has shown that one of our Haddonstone planters made with 20kG of dry mix counts as carbon neutral in just 25 months once filled with shrubs. We are now focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of cast stone, for example, finding an alternative to natural aggregates, an alternative to our traditional packaging and Portland cement. Most of the project focuses on reducing Greenhouse gas emissions which included other gases such as carbon monoxide, methane, nitrous oxides etc. Are you working to reduce the carbon footprint of meeting your transport requirements? We have made significant investment in building our own fleet of delivery lorries that utilise a state-of-the-art computer system.  This enables our drivers to optimise the handling of their vehicles and to therefore use less fuel on the road.  This results in lower emissions and pollution, and a reduced environmental impact. How is transport managed on a continuing basis? We also ensure that our entire fleet of vehicles is regularly maintained, as well as being equipped with catalytic converters, enabling them to deliver within the London Low Emission Zone. We also partner with carefully selected third party delivery services to avoid dispatching our vehicles with just a few items.  Instead, using external courier services means that they run full from one depot to another, optimising their overall carbon footprint. Given that you specialise in reconstituted stone, how do you try and reduce the impact of the associated quarrying required?  We source the highest-grade natural limestone aggregates from an environmentally responsible UK supplier.  They are acutely aware of how their operations may impact the natural environment and as such, are committed to a programme of continual improvement to minimise their effect on local natural habitats.  They also work to prevent pollution and to provide a safe working environment for their employees. Importantly, our supplier’s environmental management system meets the requirements of the international standard set by ISO 14001:2015, which requires organisations to document and improve their environmental impact.  This incorporates mineral resource efficiency, biodiversity and landscape, woodland management, energy management, and renewable energy. Cement is viewed as one of the most carbon intense building products – are you able to introduce any cement replacement products into your mixes? Haddonstone is constantly trialling and researching new products, processes and innovative solutions. Cement is the most widely utilised construction product and at present, whilst we have not found a viable substitute for cement itself, we have successfully taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint.  To what extent can you recycle your process waste and other materials? Firstly, we ensure that we recycle as much paper and cardboard waste generated in our offices as possible.  In addition to this, the 200 bespoke and standard wooden production moulds our workshops produce each month are reused where possible, before being shredded and recycled at the end of their useful life.  This produces around 50 tonnes of wood chips annually which goes towards heating the factory.  We have also just installed PV panels across a large area of the factory roof to help balance overall energy usage. Aggregate Industries plays a key role in new landmark carbon calculation reporting solution

Aggregate Industries plays a key role in new landmark carbon calculation reporting solution

Aggregate Industries has proven its unrivalled technical prowess once again having played a pivotal role in the development of a landmark new solution designed to provide automated, real-time reporting of embodied carbon emissions. Formed in Spring 2022, the Scope 3 initiative aims to drive real climate action by providing detailed, scientific embodied carbon emission calculations for the first time, as part of the automated invoice process. Headed up by construction software leader, Causeway Technologies, the project, which is due for completion next year, is being developed in collaboration with Balfour Beatty, Galliford Try and Morgan Sindall, alongside Aggregate Industries as major supplier. Dr Adam O’Rourke, Causeway’s emerging technologies consultant, comments: “As the net zero mandate grows, it’s vital that construction begins to tackle embodied carbon emissions head on. Unfortunately though, embodied carbon is incredibly difficult to measure and track due to the vast variants involved – the result being a lack of confidence in the various measurement systems available with firms often overestimating it as a precaution. “This Scope 3 initiative seeks to address the challenge by developing a solution which is able to provide wholly accurate, scientifically-led embodied carbon measurement in real-time reporting across projects as part of the invoice process.” In initial tests, Causeway worked with samples of 25,000 invoices from all involved stakeholders focusing on materials with the highest carbon impact. Crucially, Aggregate Industries’ unique Your Carbon Report provided a best practice example as part of the process – the system being capable of addressing embodied carbon figures down to the line-level items such as distance to plant, plant energy and distribution. Dr O’Rourke adds: “Aggregate Industries’ carbon reporting played a pivotal role in informing some of the strategic decision-making, thanks to the sheer level of detail and accuracy. While some suppliers tend to offer a standard carbon factor metric, with Aggregate Industries the measuring covers everything from the individual components of each different product and plant through to the distance to plant, raw material values, plant energy and distribution to site – and all in real-time.” Due for a formal launch next year, the Scope 3 initiative’s new software solution will offer a credible, verifiable, efficient and scalable way to measure Scope 3 emissions in real-time, using invoice data automatically extracted from Causeway Tradex. The companies collaborating on the initiative are currently engaging with suppliers, as well as validating and testing elements of this software. The project is also being supported via a knowledge partnership with the Engineering Department at the University of Bath. Kirstin McCarthy, Sustainability Director at Aggregate Industries, comments: “Talking to our customers, we know that sustainability is a priority and that they want to take progressive action in their approach to embodied carbon. However, we also know that the current way of doing things can be daunting and difficult. “With this, we purposely developed Your Carbon Report to provide our customers with the industry’s first true ‘cradle to grave’ measurement tool so they can see the embodied carbon impacts of their material choices quickly and with ease. “We are very proud to have been so heavily involved in the Scope 3 initiative, with our tool and our technical expertise helping to shape this important solution and we look forward to helping bring it to market in due course.” Aggregate Industries’ Your Carbon Report is the very first carbon reporting tool that enables customers to access a ‘cradle to site’ assessment to calculate, track and report embodied carbon with ease. The result is that construction professionals can easily access and view exacting material carbon-emissions data for products by manufactured Aggregate Industries, thus enabling carbon-smart choices during design and procurement. Actis-loving timber frame specialist completes Sussex development and eyes up Grand Designs

Actis-loving timber frame specialist completes Sussex development and eyes up Grand Designs

A timber frame specialist which has never looked back after its first experience with Actis insulation products has just completed a seven-home development in East Sussex whose U-values far outstrip building regulation requirements, thanks to using its Hybrid range. The timber frame development in Crowborough is well on the way to being completed and Berkshire-based Vision Development, whose construction methods are super speedy, is about to start work on a second scheme in the area for the same developer. Vision installs Actis 105mm honeycomb-style insulation Hybris on all its open panel timber frames at its Reading factory, with insulating multifoil vapour control layer HControl Hybrid installed on site. The walls in the Sussex scheme, in line with the majority of Vision’s projects, achieved a U-value of 0.16w/m2k – far exceeding the building regulations requirement of 0.26, with the H Control element of the build-up playing a key role in ensuring thermal efficiency by acting as an airtightness layer.  Walls in other Vision properties can offer between 0.14 and 0.18, depending on the external façade. Vision ditched its former go-to insulation choice, PIR board, back in 2018 after discovering how quick, clean and easy Actis products are to install. It has since completed more than 150 new timber frame homes using the system, with one, a luxury lakeside holiday development in the Cotswolds, The Lakes by Yoo, receiving an architectural award. And it is currently working on a top-secret project with roof U-values of 0.11, using Actis Boost R Hybrid, 155mm Hybris and H Control Hybrid to the internal face, which is destined to be featured on TV’s Grand Designs. Vision Development directors Lucy Karpinski and Luke McAuley have both expressed their satisfaction with the Actis Hybrid insulation system. “We and our workshop teams much prefer the Hybris for cutting and installing in the panels at our factory as it is far less messy and they don’t need to wear masks as it does not kick off dust like the PIR insulation we previously used and is a much safer product from a health and safety point of view.” “The ease of installation is attractive to us, as the main USP for timber frame is the speed of construction. There is also minimal waste, which again works well with our timber frame ethic of being environmentally friendly and the insulation being non-toxic. It is much quicker to use than PIR board and takes around half the labour time to install. “We undertake a wide range of projects and Hybris insulation has offered a cost effective and convenient solution for them all.” “The technical support from Actis has always been extremely efficient and informative. We even had a team from Actis HQ in France coming over to visit us to see how we use their products with our timber frame systems to achieve varying U-values.” The products are supplied by Minster. Robert Hairstans on the UK government inquiry into the use of RAAC

Robert Hairstans on the UK government inquiry into the use of RAAC

Professor Robert Hairstans, of Edinburgh Napier University who is also the Director of the Centre for Advance Timber Technology at NMITE said: “The current crisis regarding a form of concrete known as RAAC, highlights a failure within the construction sector, in terms of poor specification of materials, leading to safety risks. “It is concerning that RAAC, which has a lifespan of about 30 years and is prone to collapse when exposed to water, has been commonly used in low-rise structures with flat roofs. Even if the product isn’t for the roof, water can still get in and cause problems. The carbon impact of RAAC should also have been considered more thoroughly. Despite using less concrete, its short lifespan of 30 years contributes significantly to environmental impact. “In comparison, timber as a construction material offers longevity, durability and can capture carbon in the built environment for centuries – as evidenced by a vast array of buildings constructed generations ago that are still around today. If properly designed and constructed, timber buildings have low embodied energy and carbon emissions which, when combined with proper insulation for optimal operational performance, can achieve net-zero emissions.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
