45 Global Organisations Have Joined Together to Release a New Measurement System

45 global organisations have joined together in order to release a new measurement system that is expected to reduce the risk encountered on construction projects. The newly created International Construction Measurement Standards intend to reduce the infrastructure investment risk. A range of different organisations were a part of the 45 that formed a coalition to create the standards. Among the number was the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as well as the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, the Indian Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the International Cost Engineering Council. Infrastructure projects that are carried out around the world all have different ways to forecast the cost of construction. This inconsistency means that investment can be risky and lead to confusion as investors find themselves unable to compare schemes.  The creation of the International Construction Measurement Standards works to form a standard high level presentation of costs for projects. This standardisation shows the cost of construction at a project, regional, state national or international level and offers a consistent measurement on a global scale. This newly created system will also be beneficial to the construction industry as it will make investment decisions more simple and remove one of the barriers for investment in this industry. This could lead to improved global construction project benchmarking, which means that investor confidence can also be built, appeal more to private sector investors. Arcadis is one of the companies that has committed to making sure that the new measurements are used in The UK. Arcadis also works in 40 different countries, with projects in 70 different countries. One standard cost measuring systems will incredibly beneficial, removing the need to convert the costs into the for required format for the country. This standard will remove the inconsistency experienced by companies working internationally as well as the helping the companies offer a better value for money service.

Arcadis Chief Executive Steps Down

Arcadis has announced that Neil McArthur, Chief Executive since May 2012, is to leave the firm by mutual agreement. The Arcadis supervisory board and McArthur agreed to a separation due to a difference of opinion over the future direction of Arcadis. The board will now begin the search for a new chief executive, while Renier Vree, currently Arcadis chief finance officer, will serve as chief executive on an interim basis with immediate effect. Arcadis has also stated that it had suffered a challenging third quarter caused by weakness in emerging markets and the sharp fall in Sterling. This resulted in the compnay’s operating income falling by 34% to €43m, missing market forecasts. In the UK, which accounts for 17% of the company’s overall revenue, Arcadis suffered a fall in turnover, primarily as a result of a 9% currency effect. Net revenues grew organically at 3% because of improved growth in infrastructure and water, however buildings revenue fell as a result of Brexit-related delays in clients’ investment decisions. Signalling further changes to come at Arcadis, interim chief executive Renier Vree commented: “We will continue to focus on winning work with our clients and cash collection. Furthermore we will step up the pace in aligning our cost structure to the new market realities and simplify the organisation. The strategy process remains ongoing and we will disclose our strategy update at the beginning of 2017.” Commenting on his decision to step down as chief executive, Neil McArthur said: “I am proud of what we have achieved as a company over the past five years. Together, we have expanded our core business organically and through acquisitions, going from a €2bn 15,000 people organisation in 2012, to a €3.4bn global multinational with 27,000 people under a single global brand, with a collaborative structure and culture. Now it’s time for someone else to lead Arcadis through the next stage of our journey. I have no doubt that our people will continue to deliver exceptional and sustainable client solutions, and improve quality of life across the globe.”

Arcadis Secures £30m Contract with Wakefield

Built asset consultancy firm Arcadis has been appointed by Wakefield Council to deliver its property and facilities services. The deal is expected to be worth £3 million per year over seven years, with the option of a three year extension. Arcadis is a part of Wakefield Council’s strategic partnership team to deliver its property and facilities management services. It will work along with Engie, the council’s recently appointed external partner to deliver its property and facilities services. It will also deliver project and professional services. Wakefield sought a partnership “which will help secure jobs for local people and enable staff, customers and services to benefit from private sector expertise and investment”. Arcadis will be supporting the council in its ambition to generate up to £27 million in savings this year. It is hoped that the appointment will help to support economic growth in the area, while also helping the Council to improve infrastructure and create new jobs for the people of Wakefield, according to Arcadis. Arcadis head of strategic partnerships, Bill Green, commented: “Councils are under more pressure than ever before to deliver better outcomes using fewer resources, and that looks set to continue. “With less money available, public sector organisations are turning to long term partners to optimise the benefits from combining public and private sector capabilities.” Earlier in the year, Arcadis hired transport and logistics veteran Jonathan Beard, who joins the firm from ICF International where he was a Vice President. In his new role, as Head of Transportation & Logistics for Arcadis’ Asia operation, Beard will have responsibility for the company’s regional transports and logistics strategy and landing new clients. He is based in Hong Kong. Before he joined Arcadis in Hong Kong, Beard was a Vice President and Global Practice Leader for Ports, Logistics & Transport Services at ICF International.
