HS2 improves sustainability credentials with pioneering green kerbing solution

EKFB, a Joint Venture responsible for delivering works on the HS2 high speed railway running from London to the North-West, has improved the sustainability credentials of the project by choosing to use green construction innovators, Dura Products. The project will involve the installation of Dura Product’s eco-friendly kerbing solution, Durakerb at the A43 overbridge in Brackley, Northamptonshire, which will ultimately reduce the overall environmental impact of HS2 and increase positive CO2e recovery. Made from 88% recycled polymers, each Durakerb unit is lightweight and recyclable,  providing a safer, greener, faster and easier solution to kerbing that will save the overall HS2 project over 30,000kg of carbon per kilometre installed. Not only that, it aligns with the overall EKFB commitment to protect the environment and create a sustainable legacy. The 1.1km installation is part of a three-year road diversion while construction of the network continues. However, thanks to Dura Product’s ‘Hire, Reclaim and Reuse’ scheme, the units have potential for an extended life following the project demolition in 2025. The modular light structure prevents damage, allowing units to be reclaimed and re-installed as part of different projects, helping the construction industry innovatively tackle waste and enable a circular economy. Steve Bennett, Managing Director of Dura Products has commented “It has been inspiring to work alongside contractors who share the same passion for reducing environmental impacts in the construction industry as we do. Also, it is great to see companies take advantage of our ‘Hire, Reclaim and Reuse’ scheme which aims to tackle demolition waste during temporary projects, in addition to extending the life cycle of our Durakerb units. We are proud to produce and distribute products which cater to this evolving demand. “Durakerb continues to provide a safe, efficient and greener alternative to traditional kerbing methods. Since 2003 we have been dedicated to providing forward-thinking solutions which are kind to the environment, and it is exciting to see the construction industry finally taking notice of this important issue.” Since it was established in 2003, Dura Products has delivered 400,000 Durakerb units saving over 11 million kilograms of carbon. The sustainable construction innovators continue to show their dedication to manufacturing products designed to reduce carbon and climate impacts. Dura Products also offers lightweight green combined kerbing and drainage solutions, Duradrain and Durachannel, to provide a circular method for roadbuilding and managing surface run-off. EFKB, a collaboration of four leading construction and civil engineering companies, specialises in enabling railway construction projects from design to installation and maintenance. The company has been appointed to deliver an 80km section of the HS2 network. Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

BAM Wills JV begins installation of Duradrain at N5 upgrade project

BAM Wills JV has begun installation of Duradrain as part of the new €241 million N5 upgrade project, in County Mayo, Ireland. The product, a sustainable and recyclable combined kerb and drainage system, manufactured bygreen construction innovators Dura Products, will line a significant stretch of the new 20.3km dual carriageway between Turlough and Westport. It forms part of the biggest single infrastructural investment ever undertaken in the county. Duradrain was chosen primarily as a low carbon kerb and drainage solution, recording a carbon footprint of just 1.71kg of carbon dioxide per kg in its recent Life Cycle Assessments. In addition to its low carbon footprint, its lightweight nature increases productivity, while also reducing risk of injury during installation, making it a safer, simpler and greener alternative to concrete kerb and drainage systems. Dura Products, who supplied over 4km of Duradrain in October, and will supply another 10.5km between now and the New Year, uses a blend of recycled polymers to manufacture its products, ensuring it continues to divert waste from landfill and reduce demand for virgin plastic. The company has installed more than 400,000 units of its flagship product Durakerb in the UK since 2003, reflecting a burgeoning demand for sustainable construction solutions. BAM Wills JV, who signed the contract for the N5 upgrade project in October 2019, are equally committed to sustainable practice. Its parent company BAM Ireland recently partnered with the Irish Green Building Council to decarbonise Ireland’s building stock, promote circularity in the construction industry and enhance biodiversity, whilst also planting 150,000 trees to mark its 150th anniversary in 2019. Commenting on the installation, Steve Bennett, Managing Director of Dura Products said: “We’re delighted that BAM Wills JV selected Duradrain as its chosen kerbside and drainage solution for this project, and that we can help them continue leading the way for sustainable construction in Ireland. Knowing what this project will bring to the region in terms of accessibility, employment and road safety, it fills us with great pride to be involved.”

Dura Products supplies Durakerb at Thames Tideway’s Barn Elms site

Sustainable construction innovators, Dura Products has won a contract to supply the Thames Tideway site at Barn Elms with its Durakerb product. The installation, delivered in partnership with Keyline Civil Specialists in London, will see over 1km ofthe company’s lightweight, environmentally friendly kerbstone installed along the main access route to the site, described as ‘one of the greenest sites on the Tideway project’. Durakerb, made from 88% recycled polymers, is a lightweight polymeric kerb unit. With a carbon footprint of just 1.06kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kg, it offers a far more sustainable alternative than its concrete counterpart, as well as being safer, faster, and easier to install. Itwill be fitted at the West London site, a key location for the construction of the ‘Thames Tideway Tunnel’, also known as London’s ‘super sewer’. The project, delivered by construction company Tideway, involves the installation of a 25km tunnel that will intercept, store, and ultimately transfer sewage waste away from the River Thames. The decision to opt for Durakerb reflects Tideway’s commitment to green construction and a focus on sustainability. In addition to the health and ecological benefits inherent in the project, the company have pledged to plant two trees for every one removed and use the river as their primary transport route between sites, in turn, producing fewer carbon emissions. Such initiatives draw parallels with Dura Products. The companyuses a blend of recycled polymers to manufacture their products, ensuring it continues to divert waste from landfill and reduce demand for virgin plastic. The company’s green credentials were affirmed earlier this month with the announcement of new Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for Durakerb and its two other products, Durachannel, a linear surface drainage system, and Duradrain, a dual function kerb and drainage system. The three products recorded carbon footprints of just 1.06, 1.47 and 1.71kg of carbon dioxide per kg respectively. Commenting on the contract, Steve Bennett, Managing Director of Dura Products said: “More and more frequently, we are seeing construction companies opt for the green alternative, reflecting the industry’s commitment to reducing its impact on our planet. It’s particularly satisfying to be awarded a contract by a company that shares our ethos and are striving to make the world a greener place. We’re looking forward to assisting them in their mission to prevent millions of tonnes of sewage from entering the river each year”.
