Galliford Try teams up with Siemens on technology solutions

Galliford Try has teamed up with Siemens to accelerate the integration of digital technologies across the lifecycle of water and wastewater projects. The new model brings together the companies’ complementary solutions and expertise in the water sector to help water companies meet the regulatory, environmental and operational pressures in modernising their infrastructure while reducing time, cost, risk and carbon. The joint digital tools and sector experience will help water companies solve a range of challenges, such as the ability to identify potential blockages in sewer networks, improve operational efficiency of treatment works and become a net zero industry by 2030. Due to the early collaboration between Siemens and Galliford Try in advance of future projects, the partnership is estimated to speed up delivery of new tech enabled infrastructure developments significantly. The partnership will focus on three use cases. Firstly, it will enable optimisation of the wastewater treatment process using mechanistic digital twin technology. The solution optimises energy by up to 20%. It operates in real-time with integration of the control system, or offline and the solution can be offered to support a specific project or offered as a service integrated with sensor and model management. The second use case reduces storm overflows and pollution incidents. The end-to-end solution, from sensor installation to an application, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to find nine in 10 blockages and automates reporting of overflows in real-time. This is coupled with the opportunity for a UK company to be the first to deploy a proven solution, already operational globally, for catchment level integrated control that reduces overflow volumes from existing infrastructure by 80% in light rain and 19% in heavy rain. The third use case focuses on reducing the risk and maintenance of sewage pumping stations. This retrofit solution for pumping stations reduces pump blockages by 80% and improves pump performance and risk. Building, Design and Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Low-Carbon Revolution Set to Arrive at Woking power Station

Vital Energi have been awarded a £6.58m contract to deliver ThamesWey Energy’s Woking Power Station project which will create a state-of-the-art Combined Heat & Power energy centre providing low-carbon heating and power to local businesses and residents. When complete, the energy centre will produce enough heat and power to supply the equivalent of 2,500 homes and it’s first customers will be the new Hilton hotel, shops and over 400 apartments currently being delivered as part of the Victoria Square development.  The energy centre has been designed to be both scalable and highly flexible, capable of generating up to 10MW of heat, and adopting progressively lower carbon technologies over the next ten years.  The energy centre comprises a three-storey building at the junction of Poole Road and Butts Road, with energy plant and equipment based on the ground and first floors and a new headquarters for ThamesWey on the third floor.  The building is being constructed to be capable of upward extension of up to a further 17 stories of co-living space.  When complete the flues from the energy centre will measure 29.3m. In addition to initial energy production by Combined Heat & Power engine and generator there will be gas boilers to add resilience and three large thermal stores which will serve the dual purpose of releasing stored heat during peak times of demand and adding an interesting architectural landmark to the development. Rob Callaghan, Regional Director for Vital Energi commented, “This is a fantastic project to be involved in as it will allow Woking to grow and develop in a sustainable way, utilising low-carbon heat to meet the town’s needs.  This scheme was designed with long-term growth in mind and will be able to meet Woking’s energy needs well into the future, providing a resilient, low-carbon energy infrastructure.” The project is being delivered for ThamesWey by Galliford Try.  The mechanical and engineering consultants on the project are Hulley & Kirkwood and Vital Energi have been working on the project since 2018 and recently won the contract to undertake the mechanical and electrical services installations. This energy centre will feed a new low temperature District Heating Network, delivering low-carbon heat to local buildings.  In addition to delivering heat, the energy centre will also provide electricity via an 11kW network within central Woking.

Galliford Try Wins Water Related Contracts

Two water-related contracts, which will see upgrades completed on a North Lincolnshire pumping station and West Sussex pipeline, have been won by Galliford Try. The firm will upgrade Keadby pumping station near Scunthorpe for the Environment Agency under a £20.5 million contract. This project will be carried out in a joint venture with Black & Veatch. The station is located at the end of a complex network of rivers and pumping stations within the lowlying Isle of Axholme which spans around 200 square miles across South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. The pumps help transfer flood water from the Three Rivers into the River Trent during high tides. The station is nearly 80 years old and has reached the end of its working life. Work involves replacing the existing diesel driven pumps with six electric pumps, constructing electrical equipment buildings within the existing site and rebuilding the outfall headwall where the Three Rivers discharge to the Trent. Work starts this month and full completion is set for June 2021. The other project, worth £14.5 million, involves the laying of a 10km pipeline in Chichester, West Sussex, for Southern Water. The new waste water transfer main with three new pumping stations will run from the west of the city to the Tangmere treatment works in the east. The new infrastructure is necessary to connect three major housing developments of 3,800 homes in the catchment to the sewer network while complying with Environment Agency consents to limit storm discharges from the existing Chichester treatment works into the harbour. Both contracts will be undertaken by the Environment business unit of Galliford Try’s Infrastructure division.

Stephen George + Partners Win Metro Maintenance and Renewals Skills Centre Building Contract

One of the leading architectural practices in the UK, Stephen George + Partners has won the contract to build the new Metro Maintenance and Renewals Skills Centre that will be located in South Shields. The Architectural firm will be carrying out this project for client, Nexus and the work has been valued at £8 million. This is a vital regeneration project that aims to bring new skills and employment into the region. The design that has been submitted by Stephen George + Partners, or SGP portrays a single three storey building that will feature a training centre and light maintenance facility. It has been said that in terms of the architecture of the proposed building, the design will help to unify the development as the training centre will wrapped around the light maintenance area. Other comments on the design have also included that by vertically stacking the accommodation the reception and the break out areas can overlook the main entrance and helped to keep the classroom, meeting and engineering activities separated over different floors.   SGP worked with the contractor Galliford Try Infrastructure in order to develop the 33,500 sq. ft. single building option that could be constructed while meeting the client’s operational requirements and budget. This single building design has created a range of efficiencies for the design and has then therefore optimised the requirements for the foundations, structure, stairs, lifts and site clearance. In terms of meeting the operational requirements of the Nexus, the management of a single building as opposed to two offers operational cost savings. The creation of the new Metro Maintenance and Renewals Skills Centre is a flagship construction for the region and also an innovative project for SGP’s developing Transport Sector Portfolio. The existing maintenance is currently carried out in a different region, therefore, with the creation of a new training centre will allow for the skilled work that is engendered by this significant investment to be produced and allow the Metro network to move back into the area.

Galliford Try Partnerships Celebrates Start of St Augustine’s Development

Most recently, Galliford Try Partnerships has undertaken a ceremony to celebrate the commencement of its much-welcomed project in Oldham, the St Augustine’s development. Having taken place on the 16th of March, the ceremony was attended by key representatives at both Linden Homes and Galliford Try Partnerships, as well as Councillor Jean Stretton, Leader of Oldham Council. For those in attendance, the ceremony incorporated the initial breaking of ground at the site, formerly one of a school, before then undertaking a tour around the vast site, expected to be providing circa 54 new homes in the integral Greater Manchester area. The properties themselves will be divided into a mixture of both three and four bedroom properties which will be made for sale under the Linden Homes name. Prices for the homes are expected to click in at £175,000 and up, thus providing a reasonably affordable value for would-be residents to consider. In accordance with this, the company has already received a clamouring of interest in the properties, with many individuals keen to reserve them already. Of course, this is of no real surprise given the increasingly buzzing commercial flow of traffic through Greater Manchester, as well as the growing need for increased residential assets to facilitate further growth in the area. The development has, thus far been welcomed by Oldham Council and many members of the local community, no doubt providing an shred of hope in the present times of housing concerns and the lack of affordable housing presently on the property market. Commenting on the ceremony and what it means to the company, Galliford Try Partnerships’ Regional Director, Brendan Blythe, highlighted how the ceremony also signified a big step forward in the company’s overarching goals and ambitions, allowing the organisation to make progress in its endeavour to deliver quality homes for growing families, local professionals and the greater populace. He added: “Since we acquired the site from Oldham Council we have had lots of interest and we are very optimistic about the success of this site, our first in Oldham.”

Records Tumble As Profits Soar At Galliford Try

It’s a day of mixed emotions for Galliford Try. As the firm revealed record-setting half-year figures, its chief operating officer Ken Gillespie said it was time for him to retire after two decades with the company. The news of Gillespie’s retirement comes as Galliford Try revealed a 24% increase in profit over its earnings six months previously. The £52.9m made for the six months up to the end of 2015 came as revenue rose by 12%, comfortably passing the £1bn mark. It has been a particularly strong period for the group’s construction division which is on course to hit £1.5bn ahead of its 2018 target with revenue up 22%. 99% of projected revenue is now secured for the current financial year with the construction order book enjoying £3.7bn of work. Gillespie, who leaves his post having guided Galliford Try through the credit crunch, said the company’s successful standing today highlights the “bridge between recession and recovery”. Focus until the end of the year is on tying up legacy contracts. “We are wrapping up final accounts and supply chain accounts and we expect them to be fully complete within the next 6 to 12 months,” he said, admitting the firm had plans to develop its capacity to tackle road and rail projects. “While the company had a huge tradition in this area, we haven’t necessarily exploited the volumes that the company is capable of.” Bill Hocking will continue to lead the construction business following Gillespie’s departure.
