GMI Construction Group recognised by Siemens Mobility with two supplier awards

GMI Construction Group has been recognised by Siemens Mobility for its excellence after receiving two honours in its 2022 Supplier Awards. The independent company, which is delivering a £40m contract to build Siemens Mobility’s new 247,676 sq. ft. train manufacturing facility at Goole, East Yorkshire, was presented with the ‘Working Together as One’ and ‘Responsible & Sustainable Procurement’ awards. Covering five categories, the awards honour those suppliers making significant contributions to Siemens Mobility’s success with their outstanding performance. GMI Construction Group is lead contractor on the £200m rail manufacturing facility, which incorporates manufacturing and commissioning buildings, warehouses, offices and stabling sidings. In addition, it is constructing 4.5km of rail track to link the facility to the main railway line. Its commitment to using local suppliers, an emphasis on employment skills and education, as well as an outstanding record of project delivery was key to the Yorkshire-based firm securing the contract. The facility, which will create 700 new jobs, together with a further 250 roles in the construction phase and an additional 1,700 indirect supply chain opportunities, will establish Goole as a centre of excellence for rail technology within the UK. The first trains to be manufactured there will be state-of-the-art Tube trains for London’s Piccadilly line. Sambit Banerjee, Managing Director, Rolling Stock and Customer Services for Siemens Mobility Limited, said: “Congratulations to GMI Construction for these awards, which recognise the excellent progress being made in delivering our facility in Goole and the strong sustainability credentials of this industry-leading development. “Working so closely and collaboratively with a construction contractor based in Yorkshire reflects our commitment to a local and national supply chain. “That commitment applies to the Goole project and across all our UK operations. We’re proud that around 90% of our spend in the UK is with UK-based suppliers.” Lee Powell, CEO of GMI Construction Group, said: “It’s gratifying to know that GMI’s founding principles of partnership, trust, and delivering on quality have been recognised by Siemens Mobility in the form of these two awards. “Throughout our time on this project we have worked closely with Siemens Mobility together with our delivery partners to ensure this flagship development is delivered in an effective and efficient manner.” Andrew Hurcombe, GMI’s Divisional Managing Director Yorkshire, added: “Sustainability is at the heart of our business. Working in partnership with Mace Group, we have recorded and managed the amount of carbon generated as part of the construction of this facility. “This has allowed us to introduce a range of sustainable initiatives, for example the development of concrete slabs that don’t require steel rebar reinforcement.  Such initiatives, together with carbon offsetting measures, has allowed us to achieve a development with exceptional sustainability credentials. “These awards are testament to the hard work and dedication of our team on this site.” Building, Design and Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

New Manchester student residence reaches topping out stage

Much needed new accommodation for Manchester’s growing student community developed by Alumno has reached the landmark topping out stage on schedule with the structure of the building now complete. Built on a site south of the city centre previously occupied by the disused Church Inn public house and close to major arterial road The Mancunian Way, the nine-storey building will consist of 62 studio apartments, along with a communal area, rooftop terrace, office and storage space for 16 bikes. Landscaping will also be carried out to highlight the history of the site, with the reclaimed facade bricks being used to create a bespoke seating area outside the development. The location is close to a range of facilities and departments of Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester School of Art, Manchester Business School and the University of Manchester. Built by the GMI Construction Group, the development supports two key ambitions of Manchester City Council. First, to prioritise purpose-built student accommodation to protect family homes from conversion to multiple occupation properties. Second, to achieve a zero-carbon target for Manchester by establishing student accommodation close to educational establishments, reducing the need for travel and minimising emissions. Scheduled for completion for the start of the 2022 academic year, the development has been designed by Carson & Partners to enhance and complement the local area. It will also directly benefit the adjacent community, with Alumno partnering charity One Manchester to secure a £50,000 fund for local community projects. “We are also working to provide pioneering navigation aids using GPS wayfinding technology to help visually impaired students, and will install CCTV surveillance equipment to ensure the site is safe and secure, and deter anti-social behaviour,” explained Alumno Managing Director David Campbell. “I’m delighted we have reached this landmark stage on schedule, and as usual with our student residences, look forward to commissioning new public art to further enhance the public space around the building.” Commenting on the development, Iain Carson from Carson & Partners said: “It’s exciting to see another of our projects with Alumno that will rejuvenate and enhance the local area reach the topping out stage.” Marc Banks of GMI added: “Getting to this stage is a real team effort, and we’re all looking forward to going full steam ahead to ensure students can benefit from the building in 2022.”

Major boost for Kirkby Town Centre as new multi-million development arrives.

A brand new Morrisons Superstore has already opened as part of the wider revamp of the town centre recently completed by Knowsley Council and GMI that has also seen new restaurants opened and a cinema scheme progressing. GMI Construction Group PLC has heralded the completion of a significant package of works it has been undertaking since January 2020 when the announcement was made concerning its appointment to deliver Knowsley Council’s multi-million redevelopment of Kirkby town centre. Working on behalf of Knowsley Council GMI has created a 45,000 sq ft Morrisons superstore, a petrol station, car park, a 20,000 sq ft Home Bargains and Taco Bell and KFC drive-thru restaurants as part of the retail-led development in the town centre. Knowsley Council bought the town centre just two years ago after deciding to take control of the plans and speed up the delivery of the retail development and wider regeneration of the area. Talking about the new Kirkby Town Centre development, Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what has been achieved in such a short space of time. In less than two years since we took ownership, residents and visitors to Kirkby can now enjoy a new Morrisons superstore, petrol filling station and drive thru KFC and Taco Bell restaurants. Plus a larger Home Bargains will be opening in the new year. It’s amazing what has been achieved, particularly as the pandemic came just a few months into the construction. “Not only is this scheme about physical improvements in the town, but it has also created almost 400 new jobs for local people, with more opportunities soon to be advertised, and will boost the local economy by over £15m per year. “This is just the start as our plans also include a multi-screen cinema with food and drink outlets and we will also be welcoming more businesses into Kirkby over the coming months. Keep a look-out on www.knowsleynews.co.uk for the latest Kirkby news.” Also commenting on the development and GMI Construction Group PLC’s achievement, Divisional Director Marc Banks said : “This multi-million pound redevelopment breathes new life into Kirkby and is set to rejuvenate the town.  We are proud to have played a leading role in that the new Morrisons supermarket is a really great addition to the town’s skyline.  This was a multi-faceted development involving the construction of several elements.  We would like to pay testament and thanks for the full project team involved here who once again have delivered an outstanding solution.”

Construction work on the £25M project has commenced with the hotel due for completion in the first quarter of 2021, at which point it is expected that 50 full and part-time jobs will be generated. Avantis Hotels, which already owns and operates the Hampton by Hilton York in nearby Toft Green is developing the Piccadilly site, which most recently housed offices, a carpark and a motorcycle accessory shop. The Hilton brand is recognised and respected world-wide and our new Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly will complement our existing Hampton by Hilton York at Toft Green. We are excited to bring Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly to the city. We selected a great creative design team and highly capable contractor with a proven track record of delivering major hotel developments across the north of England, including Leeds and Manchester. Avantis has a long-term interest in the growing success of York’s local economy and this investment demonstrates our confidence in its strength.
