Contractors Welcome Local ‘Hidden Gems’ to Join the Construction Supply Chain

Supported and third sector businesses operating throughout Scotland are being invited to meet up with some of the country’s biggest building contractors to explore the possibilities for joining the sector’s supply chain. The hub South West partnership is hosting its third annual Hidden Gems supplier showcase as part of its on-going commitment to an inclusive supply chain offering opportunities to local businesses and organisations throughout the area. This year’s event is being held in partnership with hub West, the development partnership established in April 2012 covering the west of Scotland. Featuring 10 organisations with the potential to sell their products and services into the sector, the supplier showcase will be held on Tuesday September 24 at The Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) in Glasgow’s Edgefauld Avenue. From its roots as a supported factory for the visually impaired, the RSBi has grown into one of the country’s leading examples of social enterprise, combining commercial success with socially responsible practices. It is committed to providing opportunities to people with disabilities, as well as helping towards the economic regeneration of the local community and beyond. Wholly owned by Glasgow City Council as part of its City Building limited liability partnership, RSBi is credited as the largest supported business in Europe. It manufactures a wide range of products including kitchens, office and educational furniture, beds and soft furnishings, timber building kits, metal products and storage solutions. “The RSBi is a fantastic example of a business from which the whole of society profits, and is therefore the perfect location for this year’s Hidden Gems event,” hub South West chief executive Michael McBrearty said. “There are many such organisations throughout Scotland providing much-needed employment and support for local people, and we want to showcase how they can benefit from contributing to the construction industry in general, and in particular to Scotland’s hub programme.” The hub South West partnership was established in 2012 to deliver value for money on public sector community-based infrastructure projects to generate growth in local economies across Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway. It is currently processing a general pipeline of £1.1bn of works. Hidden Gems forms part of the regular series of workshops organised by hub Club, the networking initiative of hub South West aimed at engaging local businesses and encouraging them to share their experiences. Events from hub Club are open to all members and aspiring members of hub South West’s Territory Supplier Network. Tier 1 contractors represented on the day at Hidden Gems will include Interserve, Kier, Morrisons, Graham, Morgan Sindall, BAM, CCG and Linear Design & Construct. Registration begins at 2pm and places can be booked here.

Interserve has reached a rescue deal with its creditors to prevent its collapse, according to a statement issued by the group.  Following its 21 December 2018 announcement, the board has provided further details on its deleveraging plan.  The key commercial terms of the deleveraging plan have been agreed in principle with all of Interserve’s lenders, bonding providers and the Pension Trustee.  The board believes the deleveraging plan will provide Interserve with “a strong balance sheet and the platform to deliver on its strategy”.  Debbie White, CEO of Interserve, said: “Agreeing the key commercial terms of the deleveraging plan with our lenders, bonding providers and Pension Trustee is a significant step forward in our plans to strengthen the balance sheet. The board believes that this agreement will secure a strong future for Interserve.  “This proposal has been achieved following a long period of intensive negotiation and has the support of our financial stakeholders and the government. Interserve Wins Highways England Contract

A £4 million Highways England contract to upgrade the M271 Redbridge roundabout near Southampton Docks has been secured by Interserve, the international support services and construction group. “We are delighted to have secured another Highways England contract after our recent success on the A63 Princes Quay in Hull. Our works on the Redbridge roundabout will benefit residents, businesses and ease congestion around Southampton docks,” said Wayne Howell, Sector Director for Highways. The scheme will see Interserve create a new free-flow, left-turn lane from the M271 to the Port of Southampton. The infrastructure division will also complete road-widening works to create four lanes on the roundabout to increase its overall capacity. Other associated works will include an additional toucan crossing which enables pedestrians and cyclists to cross together, replacing a footbridge and refurbishing an existing subway to the north of the junction. A major problem in this area of Southampton is congestion, with the M271 southbound to the A33 exhibiting average speeds of below 40 mph during peak hours which also impacts road safety. This scheme aims to reduce traffic delays on this important route into Southampton and create more reliable journey times for local, regional and port transport. Interserve is one of the world’s foremost support services and construction companies. Their core values are at the heart of everything they do. As leaders in innovative and sustainable outcomes for their clients and a great place to work for, Interserve offers advice, design, construction, equipment, facilities management and frontline public services. Headquartered in the UK and FTSE listed, Interserve has gross revenues of £3.7 billion and a workforce of circa 75,000 people worldwide.

The scheme will see the redevelopments of the caravan and camp site, as well as provide new amenity buildings, including toilet blocks, a new reception building and office accommodation. In addition to contributing to the local community, the expansion of the park will also provide a boost to the wider Bridlington economy. The new Chief Executive has started work for Interserve. In the middle of November 2016 it was announced that Adrian Ringrose, Chief Executive at the time, was handing in his notice. Adrian worked until the end of the day on the 31st August 2017 in order to ensure that the transition to the new Chief Executive went as smoothly as possible. The newly appointed Debbie White started in her new role on the 1st of September 2017. Debbie has joined the team at Interserve after working for 13 years at the support service company Sodexo. In her previous role Debbie White was the CEO of Global Healthcare and Government. Debbie will be an asset to the company and will help to develop Interserve further and their boost facilities management services. In her new role it is thought that Debbie White will be guiding Interserve through a transitional phase, as the company turn their focus to their facilities management, catering and cleaning services as opposed to their construction and civil engineering divisions that have been at the forefront of their business for so long. Debbie’s work will continue on this path following an announcement that was made recently claiming that the business will no longer be competing on construction contracts that exceed £10 million. Interserve is known for being a multi-national support services and construction company that is based in the UK. The business focuses offering advice, design, construction, equipment and facilities management as well as supplying a range of frontline public services. This payment has been calculated in respect of the basic pay which will stretch until the 7th of March, and when Adrian’s notice period ends.

Interserve Secures £41.4m Contract for Leeds SEMH Schools

Interserve has secured £41.4 million worth of contracts to build new school facilities for children in Leeds with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Leeds City Council has developed a new strategy to provide specialist SEMH education facilities. New learning centres will replace the existing ‘behavioural, emotional and social difficulties’ (BESD) provision and pupil referral unit (PRU) provision, and will be delivered by Wellspring Academy Trust, the only ‘outstanding’ rated provider of SEMH provision in the north of England. Three construction contracts in different areas of the city have been awarded to Leeds D&B One, a subsidiary of Interserve. Leeds D&B One was set up specifically to build schools for Leeds City Council. Previously, Interserve has worked on Leeds ‘Building Schools for the Future’ scheme. Through Leeds D&B One, Interserve has a contract worth £14.3 million to redevelop the former Merlyn Rees High School site in Belle Isle, located in the south of the city; a £13.0m contract at the former East Leeds Family Learning Centre; and a £14.1m contract to redevelop the Tinshill pupil referral unit in the north of the city. Work on the three new buildings will run concurrently, with the accommodation due to be ready during the 2017/18 academic year. Back in July, when the council, committed to the investment, Cllr Lisa Mulherin, executive member for children and families, said: “This hugely significant investment in world class facilities, support and education for those young people in our city with social, emotional and mental health needs is long overdue. “It will enable more young people’s needs to be met closer to home, and save them from having to travel out of the city to access the learning environment they need. This new specialist provision will radically improve the learning, support and outcomes for some of the city’s most vulnerable children, replacing old, unsuitable buildings with specially designed learning places, which are fit for the future.”
