Panthera wins multi-service contract for city centre building refurb

A major makeover underway at a building located at the foot of the Millennium Bridge, between St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern, has been secured with EnviroHoard™ sustainable hoarding from Panthera Group as the first part of a contract for multiple site services.  Millennium Bridge House was originally completed in the late 1980s following demolition of the previous site and is set to be redeveloped by contractor ISG after approval by The City of London Corporation. Along with the sustainable site hoarding solution, Panthera Group will provide a variety of site services for the duration of the project. This includes the internal fit out for welfare facilities such as ISG offices, subcontractor offices, toilets, changing rooms, showering facilities and a canteen along with a security hut at the entrance. The £65 million project included a stipulation to redevelop the building sustainably by embracing circular economy, carbon reduction and resource efficiency principles. To that end, ISG worked with Piercy and Company Architects on a design to retain the majority of building structure whilst reconfiguring the internal layout to optimise space for retail facilities, offices, a roof level restaurant and roof. A new façade will embrace natural light and create energy efficiency throughout the building.   One of the overall objectives of the project is to achieve BREEAM RFO 2014 (Excellent) which means sustainability compliance in the supply chain is key. Robert Ingram, Managing Surveyor at ISG, opted to work with Panthera Group on the project;  “I have worked with the Panthera team for over 10 years and have always found them to be extremely professional and collaborative in their approach. It made sense to use EnviroHoard™ for our perimeter hoarding as it is a verified net zero carbon solution. Panthera was wholly supportive during the tender process; providing the environmental assessment and generally offering a great service to our project teams. Phase one works are underway and this includes the first elevation of EnviroHoard™ which is looking good. Phase two is imminent and will involve the site set up services.” EnviroHoard™ offers many commercial as well as environmental advantages. The flexible, modular system is quick to install and can be easily relocated as and when required.

ISG awarded £50m Art Deco office restoration

ISG has been awarded the £50m Northcliffe House refurbishment project to restore the historic Art Deco office to its former glory. The refurbishment of the 25,119m2 building will see an increase to the building’s net lettable space of 1,150m2 with the extension of two new levels. It will also include the addition of 9,000sq ft worth of green space including the south-facing landscaped roof terraces across levels six and seven.    Upon completion, the refreshed space will provide its occupiers with a modern workplace to a Cat A standard. It will boast scenic lifts overlooking the renovated atrium extension, all within the existing cast steel frame. Whilst providing state of the art amenities internally, cleaning and repairs will also take place to restore the building’s historic Art Deco façade.    The former home to the Daily Mail newspaper is targeting BREEAM Outstanding. The approach has been strongly informed by a Life Cycle Assessment, which considered the savings in embodied carbon by retaining the existing structure compared with demolition and a full, new-build redevelopment of the site. A key feature of the Grade II listed building is the reconfigured internal atrium, which upon completion will link the reception with the renovated office space and break out areas. However, during renovation works the atrium is home to the 40-metre crane, reducing external disruption and improving efficiencies while guaranteeing the project’s high-quality and consistent delivery. CCCL work with ISG on 1st phase of £300m scheme for new Neurology Centre at UCL

The construction consultants continue to support ISG on another world-leading project. The 1st phase of the £300m development scheme for University College London (UCL) saw ISG appointed as the main contractor for the circa £150m NEC3 Option A contract. Following an initial review of amendments to the contract, CCCL have been assisting ISG with various pre-construction services. A scheme for global change The new addition to the University will serve as a hub for the UK Dementia Research Institute, the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.  As the new home for these 3 world-leading organisations, it will help tackle global challenges for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s,  Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and vascular dementia, making it the leading translational neurology research centre in the world. From the first win, to the last touchpoint Being one of the UK’s leading practitioners in the use of NEC Contracts, Ctori Construction Consultants worked with ISG, initially providing support throughout the bidding cycle.   The Ctori team has since been working closely with ISG on their contract with UCL, providing strategy and contract administration advice, as well as assisting in the procurement of the 40 plus sub-contracts for the development.  Training the team A comprehensive NEC training programme has also been designed by CCCL for the wider project team at UCL. The bespoke training sessions have been providing the team with insight into the operation of the NEC contract across key elements of the form.  Peter Ctori, commercial director at CCCL, said:  “We have worked closely with ISG since their first NEC project at St Pancras Station in 2007.  We are delighted to continue our assistance on yet another prestigious project for them.” With works having begun in 2020, the project is due for completion in Q2 2024 and to be followed by migration and occupation later in the year. The scheme is part of a £1.25bn, 10-year-long investment programme called ‘Transforming UCL’ which is set to upgrade the university’s estates and support its continuing growth.

Sir Vince Cable marks the topping out of Richmond upon Thames College building

ISG celebrated reaching the highest point in the construction of the new campus building at Richmond upon Thames College by hosting a topping out ceremony where Liberal Democrat Party leader and MP for Twickenham, Sir Vince Cable, tightened the final bolt on the steel frame. More than 100 guests from the college, ISG’s supply chain and its associated partners attended the event to mark the completion of the building’s shell and core, bringing the College’s vision to create a world class post-16 centre of excellence closer to realisation. As he addressed the attendees, Sir Vince Cable said: “This outstanding building will turn this college into place of distinction for vocational and educational training and apprenticeships in the region, and I’m really proud to be associated with the project. “We have to make sure the further education sector in the UK is properly supported. Post-school education is not just about universities and having a successful further education sector is absolutely critical to the future of the country. I am delighted that the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is hosting such a forward-thinking project and I would like to say well done to everybody who has been involved in bringing it to fruition.” Steven McGee from ISG, as well as project partners, including Fusion, Atkins and Faithful+Gould also addressed the delegates on the day, alongside Gerard Toplass from procurement and management services provider, PAGABO, who revealed that the £35 million project has generated more than £53 million of social value in Richmond, including the creation of 10 apprenticeships and 41 new jobs, to date. Steven McGee, managing director of ISG’s UK Construction South division, explained: “A great deal of hard work, creative thinking and collaboration has bought this project to this key milestone. This event marks a significant moment in the delivery of this legacy project for the region, and it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the strong partnerships and joint endeavor that is bringing this exceptional facility to life.” “The Richmond Building will act as a beacon for the community, attracting the brightest students in the region, and the best talent in FE teaching, and ISG is already playing its part in this vision. Throughout the course of the project, we have engaged with young people in Richmond to drive employment and upskilling opportunities. Our Level 3 Diploma in Professional Construction Practice (PCP), which will be rolled out – in conjunction with the college – from this September. We welcome the engagement from our partners, the college and the local community as we continue to create a positive legacy in Richmond for generations to come.” Robin Ghurbhurun, RuTC’s Chief Executive and Principal added: “The vision is to create a flagship college that will not only benefit Richmond borough residents but also become a major careers hub and community destination for students and employers. Zoe Price, ISG’s group director of public sector frameworks, has shared her thoughts on the future of public sector procurement at Women in Property’s most recent industry debate – an event sponsored by ISG and Burgess Salmon. Working to create opportunities, expand knowledge and inspire change for women within the property and construction industry, the Association of Women in Property aims to maximise opportunities to actively engage with influential media outlets and be seen and heard at key industry events. The sold-out event featured a panel of industry experts discussing the state of procurement within the public sector with an audience of 100 delegates. The panel featured: • Zoe Price – Group Director of Public Sector Frameworks, ISG • Simon Toplass – CEO, Pagabo • Ann Bentley – Global Board Director, Rider Levett Bucknall (also a member of the UK Government’s Construction Leadership Council) • Helen Baker – Director of Procurement, UWE • Laura Wisdom – Senior Associate, Burgess Salmon • Deborah Vogwell – Senior Manager, Homes England. Pierre Wassenaar, director at Stride Treglown, hosted the discussion, prompting debate around the benefits of the framework route, the role of SMEs and how they can compete, transparency, relationships and the future of public sector procurement, before the panel took questions from the audience. “In the last 18 months we’ve developed a new strategy on how to target and position ourselves on frameworks and it is really important to us as a business,” started Zoe. “It is a strategy that I’m very passionate about and we can evidence the added value and development of long term relationships. The best frameworks are mutually beneficial to both client and contractor, helping bring projects to site quicker and more efficiently, whilst enabling all delivery partners to share best practice and improve productivity. This was a great event with a lot of audience engagement, and it certainly showed that there is a lot of uncertainty around public sector procurement, which I believe could be supported by the use of frameworks to provide transparency and add value to the process,” she continued.

Manchester Project Recognised at Offsite Construction Awards

This year’s Offsite Construction Awards, which celebrate the best in precision building design and delivery, have recognised a project led by ISG and Manchester City Council. The Beaver Road Primary School was named Education Project of the Year 2019 at the ceremony in London. What impressed the judges the most was ISG and Premier Modular’s integrated team approach to the project, which saw Beaver Road achieve RIBA Stage 5 in 19 weeks from a standing start and beat 32 other projects to win the highly-sought-after award. Volumetric, offsie manufacturing was used for the £7.2 million Beaver Road scheme to ensure the school could open ahead of the 2018/2019 academic year. This application saved at least 10 weeks against a traditional build programme. Ahead of the academic year in 2018, the ISG and Premier Modular team completed six projects for the council. This wider programme of schools was also recognised at the event, coming highly commended in the BIM/Digital Construction Award category. All six projects were to BIM Level 2, including a fully integrated asset information model. “Early engagement of the right supply chain and standard repeatable designs – informed by lessons learned from two earlier modular school schemes – allowed us to ensure design for manufacture from the outset,” said Neil Walker, framework director at ISG. “The speed of the wider schools programme, including the project at Beaver Road, was extraordinary. Together the project team delivered six schools, with a construction value of circa £31 million in just 57 weeks from a standing start.”

ISG Has Been Named as the Number One Central London Corporate Office Interior Fit Out Contractor

The worldwide construction services company ISG has been named as the number one central London corporate office interior fit out contractor. The construction services company has been given this award for the fifth consecutive year. The report conducted by Metropolis Property Research ranks firms that are involved in ‘Cat B’ projects. There projects involve new space taken by corporate occupiers and covers from 2012 to 2016. This report suggests that ISG has had a dominant share in the ‘Cat B’ office fit outs in London since 2012. The office fit outs count for 33% of business given to the top ten firms. This equates to over 5 million sq. ft. of space. ISG has carried out works for a variety of different clients. The schemes include work for global financial services firms as well as the 700,000 sq. ft. fit out of 5 Broadgate. ISG were part of this project that has been labelled as the biggest office project to take place in central London for the past five years. The company also worked on CMS’ 160,000 sq. ft. headquarters which is located at Cannon Place. ISG has also been involved in the 100,00 sq. ft. scheme in Midtown for Saatchi & Saatchi. The new award is also representative of the continuing high standard of customer service from ISG. The sector has experienced a significant deal of change over the last five years, and ISG has had to adapt to the advances in technology as well as the new products and methods for construction. The construction service has remained popular in a market where it is an advantage to offer more for less. ISG aim to offer the leading technological solutions when working. 57.3 million square feet of office space has been let over the five years that the report was being conducted, and 30.3 million square feet being Cat B projects.
