Balfour Beatty celebrates the formal handover of Woolwich Elizabeth line station

Crossrail has today handed over the Woolwich Elizabeth line station to Transport for London, following the successful delivery by Balfour Beatty; marking the fourth central London station to be transferred ahead of Trial Operations beginning later this year. Delivered alongside its design partners, Mott MacDonald, the revitalised station will ensure quicker, easier and more convenient travel for commuters, residents and visitors each day both into and out of Woolwich, whilst also supporting wider regeneration in the local area – creating numerous jobs and opportunities for local businesses. Works to the much-anticipated station involved the delivery of a 276-metre-long underground station, with Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering providing the associated diaphragm walls and bearing piles.  In addition, Balfour Beatty was responsible for installing Mechanical and Electrical plant at two portals as well as station operations rooms where the Elizabeth line trains will surface from either end of the Thames Tunnel at North Woolwich and Plumstead. Andy Lambden, Balfour Beatty Project Director, said: “This is an incredible milestone for both Balfour Beatty and Crossrail – one that signifies another step towards the official opening of the long-awaited, iconic, Elizabeth Line. “Testament to our unrivalled expertise from across the Group, we are delighted to have safely and successfully delivered a station which will transform travel across south east London, whilst also supporting economic growth in the area through new employment and business opportunities.” Mark Wild, Crossrail Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that Woolwich station has been handed over to Transport for London. Woolwich is a beautiful station, surrounded by history which has been brilliantly captured by all those working on the station build. I am proud of everyone who has worked so hard to get this magnificent new railway station over the line.” David Eastland, Mott MacDonald’s project design director, C530 Woolwich Station, said: “This has been a remarkable programme of works with some amazing people and skills. The station is a living legacy providing, transport homes and jobs, so it gives me great pleasure to see the station handed over as part of the transformation of the Woolwich area and the wider contribution to London.” Located on the site of the Royal Arsenal which was home to a military academy and previously used for the manufacture of guns and explosives, munitions testing and the production of medals including the ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ which was given to the next of kin of those killed during World War One, the station’s design subtly references the military past of the site. Mott MacDonald announces new strategic partnership with BIM innovators 3D Repo

Mott MacDonald Ventures, the investment arm of global management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald, has announced a new strategic partnership with 3D Repo, pioneers of cloud-based design collaboration for building information modelling (BIM). The partnership follows a recent £2.3m A-series investment round in 3D Repo led by The Ingenious Group’s infrastructure ventures EIS service, and brings more positive momentum for the innovative start-up. Mott MacDonald currently utilises BIM across the building, oil and gas, transport, water, and power industry sectors, and plans to use 3D Repo’s online collaborative platform to enhance collaboration and to drive better results on construction projects across the UK. Darren Russell, chief digital officer at Mott MacDonald Digital Ventures, said: “BIM brings a long list of tangible benefits that ultimately save time and money through reduced risk, minimising waste, faster delivery, and enhanced sustainability. CBI Labelled as Future Leaders Within the Construction Industry

The CBI is a Construction Council that is made up of 35 Chief Executives from across the sector. The Council has asked a group labelled as future leaders within the construction industry to create some recommendations that will help with collaboration and digitisation of the sector. The future leaders group that has been asked to compile these recommendations come from a range of different companies including BAM Nuttall, Carillion, Henry Boot, Kier Group, J Murphy & Sons, Mott Macdonald, NG Bailey, Pinsent Masons, Wates, Ryder Architecture and Saint Gobain. The group of future leaders will report to the CBI Construction Council in November with their recommendations that will hopefully see the industry adapt in preparation for the future. The Future leaders group is comprised of 18 individuals that have been marked as rising stars. The members of this council are all under the age of 35 and come companies at different parts of the supply chain as well as from a variety of different size businesses. The range of different sectors involved in making the recommendations should mean that the ideas put forward to the CBI will benefit companies across the supply chain. It is thought that bringing potential future leaders of the construction industry together will help to develop ideas from a fresher perspective. This will help the industry push forward the industry and lead to the development of solutions that are efficient in to the future. Thinking of new ideas will also help the construction sector manage with the aims set out by the Government to update infrastructure, as well as housing, roads, rail and nuclear. The Future Leaders Group ideas will complement the work that is done by the CBI Construction Council. This Construction Council works to promote the construction sector and help the Government in order to allow the industry to thrive and progress.

Design Partnership Announced for HS2 with the Mott MacDonald – Systra Joint Venture

Most recently the Balfour Beatty Vinci JV has announced its selection for the design partnership in delivering the project for HS2 – specifically, the Mott MacDonald – Systra JV, seeing synchronisation in the British and French pairing of contractor to consulting engineer. It is of no surprise that Mott MacDonald has been selected for the project, with the company having a great deal of experience in the high-speed rail sector globally, as well as its noted involvement in HS2 for the past six years – this has seen the company provide a wide range of engineering, environmental and planning services. On a global scale, Mott MacDonald has been working on a number of leading high-speed projects, including the management of environmental, public consultation and engineering for the Palmdale – Los Angeles segment for the California High Speed Train Project; additionally also providing engineering design services for the segment between Palmdale and Fresno. Mott MacDonald has also been working on the Taipei – Kaohsiung system in China, as well as the HSL Zuid system for the Netherlands. As for Systra, it is notable that the organisation has seen involvement in every single rail line for France, as well as 50% of those around the globe, making the company’s addition to the HS2 delivery team again, a logical choice. Most specifically, the company has been involved in Crossrail as well as the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, and serves as a piece of the design consortium for the South East Atlantic High Speed line, also with Vinci. As for those contractors yet to be appointed to the packages for the main civil engineering side of the works, it is predicted that these will be revealed further into 2016, coming just in time for the enabling works to begin next year and previous to the commencement of the civil engineering side of works on phase one – between West Midlands and London itself.

Welsh Coastline to be Investigated

Most recently, the most prominent coastal investigation study has begun alongside the Welsh coast. Incorporating everything from mathematical modelling, the monitoring of water quality and field surveys, the study exists to provide the DCWW and Natural Resources Wales with the knowledge essential to better protecting Welsh coastal waters, not solely today, but tomorrow and into the future. The study itself, which is expected to be finished by the close of 2017’s first quarter, will see members of the DCWW Capital Delivery Alliance pursuing a schedule of works across 49 Welsh coastal sites as part of a project totalling in at a value of circa £8m. For the study, members of the alliance will create computerised models of Welsh coastal waters, then carrying out studies on bathing as well as of shellfish water to better assess how and where investment will be needed to sustain, or improve, water quality levels along the Welsh coast. Although the alliance already maintains considerable in-house expertise, to best ensure accuracy and proficiency in the study, partnerships have also been made with specialists in the field, including water consultant, Intertek, as well as APEM, Fugro and CREH to assist in the delivery of the study. As explained by alliance member, Mott MacDonald Bentley’s Project Manager, Mark Dives, the project will see a variety of innovative techniques for the survey as well as some of the latest specialist coastal survey technology ever used. This will include state of the art modelling and microbial tracers, pollutant transport and the simulation of coastal dynamics. He explained: “The sheer scale of the task in hand – to gather a huge amount of historic data to feed the study and drive a substantial survey programme to gather new data – in the time available will provide a big challenge.” Yet, despite the challenges laid out, Mark Dives remains sure that the alliance will be able to complete the study in a safe and efficient manner as well as find a sustainable outcome which can benefit both customers of the DCWW and the wider environment.
