Powerday continues to pioneer the UK waste management industry with investment in two Volvo Trucks electric skip loaders

After successfully trialling Volvo Trucks’ first fully electric skip loader, Powerday – London’s leading recycling and waste management company – has become one of the first companies in the UK to place an order for the Swedish manufacturer’s vehicles. Powerday currently operates a fleet of over 70 vehicles, servicing construction clients across the south east. The two new Volvo electric vehicles will come into service in September and are expected to save more than 30 tonnes in CO2 emissions per year. The new skip loaders will initially be based at the company’s Old Oak Sidings site, in north west London. Transition to electric The shift to using the electric skip loaders comes after Powerday launched its latest Sustainability Manifesto, which revealed its commitment to achieve net zero status by 2040. The annual report outlines the company’s targets for the year, and reports on progress for the previous year, under five sustainability pillars: employees, community, carbon management, clients, and procurement.  Powerday has been measuring its Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2020. It has set the 2040 net zero target – relative to a 2021 baseline – with interim goals of a 20% reduction in 2023, 35% by 2026 and 50% by 2030. The commitment has been registered with SME Climate Hub to count towards the UN Race to Net Zero. A revolution in skip loading vehicles Driven by a two-speed transmission, offering a smooth and comfortable driving experience, the Volvo’s electric’s power is handled by a unique traction control system developed to master even slippery surfaces, while different drive modes are available to set the desired performance, comfort, and energy usage levels. Equipped with four batteries, it offers a range of approximately 190km and can be recharged in just 2.3 hours using the 150kW DC charger that has been installed at Powerday’s Old Oak Sidings site. Chris Donnelly, Sales Director, Volvo Trucks commented: “Powerday conducted trials last year when we first launched our fully electric skip loader demonstrator, installing infrastructure at its own cost for the trial to take place.  This showed immediate commitment and we were very grateful. “The data following the trials was staggering. We had predicted returns of course from our Electric Range Simulator, however, the performance was far better than expected. We congratulate Powerday on its bold environmental targets and look forward to supporting them on its road to Net Zero.” Edward Crossan, CEO, Powerday, added: “In line with our net-zero roadmap, adopting these electric skip loaders into our fleet shows our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to cleaner air and environment in London. “As a pioneer in the waste management industry, we proudly stand as the first company to embrace the future of sustainability. By investing in electric skip loaders, we lead the charge towards cleaner, greener solutions.”

Powerday sets out latest sustainability targets in new ambitious manifesto

Powerday has set out the company’s latest sustainability targets in our new ambitious Sustainability and Wellness Manifesto for 2023.  The Manifesto sets out clear objectives under all five pillars – our employees, communities, carbon management, clients, and procurement.  As well as these challenging targets, the Manifesto plots our roadmap to net zero in line with our recently announced net zero target for Scopes 1 and 2 and shares this and our other successes for 2022.  We are particularly delighted with our progress against our carbon management pillar, not only in the setting of our net zero target but in the carbon reduction measures we have taken to date. We are also proud of our initial steps on the journey to improve gender equality at Powerday, and the big wins delivered through Powerday Foundation.  With the support of our many partners, we delivered activities to over 3,000 young Londoners last year, exceeding our target by 20% in the second year of our five-year strategy.  You can read more about all these achievements in the report. Michael Crossan, Chairman says: “I am hugely proud of what Powerday has achieved in 2022 in collaboration with our employees, clients, suppliers, communities and other partners.  I am confident that together our continued efforts will enable us to deliver against our new sustainability commitments and have a positive impact on both people and the planet.” Edward Crossan, CEO says: “There remains much to do to meet our sustainability goals, so we are excited to continue our journey with challenging targets across all our five pillars for 2023. We have a particular focus on fairness in the workplace and community, training and development, net zero carbon, and the health and wellbeing of young Londoners, and look forward to updating you on all our progress in the year ahead.” Powerday published its first Manifesto in 2020 and we have continued to do so annually since then to help us achieve our ambitions and track our progress. The freely available report addresses our sustainability priorities under our five pillars, sharing our progress against the previous year’s plan and setting out new objectives for the coming year. Powerday delivers just shy of £30 million in social value projects

Powerday’s latest annual report produced by the independent adjudicator and auditor The Social Value Portal shows that over the past 36 months they have delivered just short of £30 million in social value projects.    Powerday’s social value is focused on four key disciplines: Reducing the environmental impact of waste in the UK Improving lives through education and employment Improving lives through sport Supporting our wider community where most needed. Despite the limitations due to the pandemic this latest report shows that Powerday delivered in excess of 11mil. in social value projects across these four areas for the 12 months ending period to July 2021, a staggering increase of over £2 mil.(+22%) on the previous 12 month reporting period The largest impact is delivered predominantly through its core business, delivering over £8.7million of social and local economic value (SLEV). Powerday also created just under £2million of SLEV by recycling over 20,000 tonnes of hard to recycle waste including mattresses and hard plastics and an additional £200,000 through offsetting fleet emissions making its fleet carbon neutral. The report further shows 1,000 hours spent on local school and college visits, and 600 weeks delivering apprenticeships to its employees.  Powerday’s ongoing strong commitment to supporting local communities and improving lives through sport delivered over £95,000 of social value by creating and supporting healthier, safer and more resilient communities.  In addition, it donated in excess of £150,000 worth of equipment to voluntary, community and social enterprises and carrying out over 800 hours of volunteer work. The Powerday Foundation supported many boxing clubs within the year, including securing new homes for both Spelthorne Boxing Academy and Fairbairn Boxing Club. Powerday also helped Friends of Roundwood Park create a better green space for local residents and Energy Garden create a community garden at Willesden Junction station.  Edward Crossan, Chief Executive Officer said “We remain fully committed to using our sustained growth to support our local communities.  The last few years have been challenging for most businesses and indeed, Powerday is no exception but we are acutely aware many in our communities have suffered so much more.  It is hugely important to us that we can and do play our part to protect our planet and improve the lives of our communities”. Having long provided extensive social value through their operations and community work, Powerday signed up to  The Social Value Portal in 2019. The Social Value Portal provide an independent and verification of the above numbers.  In three years of reporting Powerday have delivered almost £30million.

Powerday creates over £9million of social value in 12 months

Leading independent recycling and waste management company, Powerday, has created over £9millon social value for the second consecutive year with every pound that clients spent with the company contributing £0.22 to the local community.  Powerday’s social value is focused around four goals: reducing the environmental impact of the UK’s waste, improving lives through education and employment, improving lives through sport and supporting the wider community where they need it.  The company believes strongly in the power of sport to ensure mental and physical wellbeing, providing young people with confidence and self-discipline that will help them throughout their lives.  This belief has seen Powerday partner with London Boxing since 2011, an initiative which has improved health and mental well-being for 10,000 young people in some of the most marginalised areas of the Capital.  In January this year, the company launched the Powerday Academy to deliver career opportunities for the local community, including existing employees and school leavers that might be struggling to find work.  Under this scheme, Powerday has already provided full time employment to three 16 to 24 year olds who would otherwise be classed at NEETs (not in education, employment or training).  The Academy has also enabled Powerday to deliver over 1,130 apprenticeship weeks with 15 employees undertaking apprenticeship courses through the company’s training partners.  Joint Managing Director, Liam Kearney says: “With 77% of our staff from within a 15-mile radius of Old Oak Sidings, we are proud to be a significant local employer.  We believe that as such we have a responsibility to provide secure and rewarding employment whilst giving opportunities to those in our community who might be struggling to find work.  We also want to ensure we have the best trained and motivated team within our sector.  To help us deliver against all of this, we were proud to launch the Powerday Academy earlier this year”.  When Covid-19 struck, wanting to continue to support the health and wellbeing of Londoners during lockdown, Powerday helped NHS workers working round the clock by providing nutritious meals.  The company teamed up with London Irish Rugby Club, preparing and delivering over 50,000 free meals to frontline workers in 19 different hospitals during eleven weeks. Edward Crossan, Vice Chairman, Powerday says: “We are committed to using our sustained growth to support our local communities and are very pleased to be able to contribute so significantly, particularly this year given the challenges we have all faced.  I believe the coronavirus outbreak has highlighted the need for businesses to contribute to society and it’s vitally important to us at Powerday that we can and do play our part.  Our work in this area is now as important to us as our waste management services and we are proud of our contributions”.   The family business has always provided extensive social value through its operations and community work.  Last year, Powerday signed up to the Social Value Portal.  An initial report for the company’s financial year 2018/19 showed that Powerday created £9.2million of social value in that period.  This was followed by £9million in 2019/20, a significant achievement given the challenges in delivering social value projects during the pandemic.  This included £1.3million in social value through the 869,000 miles driven in the company’s Euro 6 fleet which emit under 75mg of carbon dioxide per kilometre, and the recycling of 14,500 tonnes of hard-to-recycle wastes including road barriers, mattresses and mixed plastics.  Every pound that clients spent with Powerday in 2019/20 contributed £0.22 to the local community.  Powerday’s latest report can be downloaded from Powerday-CSR-2019-2020-Social-Value-Report.pdf

Powerday Launched a Scheme That Would Work Alongside The Social Enterprise Blue Sky and HMP Onley

Powerday launched a scheme in November last year that would work alongside the social enterprise Blue Sky and HMP Onley that has allowed inmates to receive training and employment with Blue Sky and Powerday on construction sites around London. The first delegates of the scheme have started their training as part of the scheme, with the offer of a six-month contract of employment when they are released. One of the delegates to start their training is Tony Hogg, from Southwark. Hogg has taken his City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and his CSCS Labourer Green Card last year while completing his sentence at HMP Onley. Upon his release earlier this year, Tony has managed to complete his onsite training and is a labourer with one of London’s leading logistics teams, St George. Tony will be required to assist with waste removal and deal with water leaks and dismantling and putting up fences. It is expected that in a few months Tony will move to a handyman position where he will be trained as a fire marshal and first aider. Powerday are a part of this scheme as a way of helping the local community. Tony Hogg has made a good first impression on site which will help gather support for the scheme. The scheme should help get ex-offenders in to work, which is a proven way of reducing the reoffending chances. It is also promising to see the longstanding client of Powerday, St George supporting the scheme and offering placements for the delegates. Tony Hogg is the first person to go through the scheme and it is hoped that more delegates will follow him. The new scheme has come into effect as the Justice Secretary Liz Truss called for a shake-up of the prisons in England and Wales. These changes made up the Prisons and Court Bill and could make it law that prisons work to rehabilitate and reform offenders.
