SES Engineering Services to deliver £84 million project at University of Glasgow

Leading engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services (SES), has announced its appointment to deliver an £84 million new development at the University of Glasgow. The Adam Smith Business School and Postgraduate Teaching Hub is the fourth major development to commence as part of the University’s Campus Development Plan.  Appointed by Multiplex following a competitive tender, this latest project enables SES to draw on its recent experience gained on the University of Glasgow’s James McCune Smith Learning Hub which completed in early 2021 and was the first building to be delivered as part of the masterplan. Working again with main contractor and Programme Delivery Partner, Multiplex, SES will be providing a full MEP service, adopting the same strategy utilised when working on the Learning Hub including the production of a full BIM Level 2 model, which will essentially simplify building maintenance in the future. Once operational, the six-storey building, which has a gross internal floor area of 11,600m2, will provide specialised teaching, research and collaboration space for the University’s postgraduate taught student community, whilst delivering state-of-the-art premises for the world-leading business school.

SES Engineering Services embarks on latest blue light project

Leading national engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services (SES), has announced it is to commence work on its latest state-of-the-art custody suite project with lead contractor, Willmott Dixon. Working closely with both the contractor’s team and Nottinghamshire Police, SES has been appointed to deliver a full range of MEP services on a new multi-million pound 50-cell custody suite, currently under construction on a former gas works site in Nottingham.  Serving Nottingham and the wider conurbation, the new building’s design is more befitting 21st century custodial needs and will replace an existing facility which was deemed to be too outdated to benefit from a refurbishment. In the past five years, SES has delivered five custody suites for multiple Police forces and as such gained extensive experience and a reputation as a leader in its field in the blue light sector. This experience, coupled with SES’ and Willmott Dixon’s well-established working relationship, will ensure that the project is delivered to exacting requirements as set out by the Home Office, where specific ventilation and comfort conditions within custodial spaces must be met. To meet these needs, SES will be required to install a high volume of complex building services to the two-storey building.  In addition to the cells, the building will also provide first floor office accommodation for police investigators and the custodial handling team.    Speaking about the imminent start on site, SES’ managing director, Steve Joyce, said: “I am delighted to be collaborating once more with Willmott Dixon on a key project for Nottingham’s Police and Crime Commission and Nottinghamshire Police. Our proven track record of delivering projects requiring highly complex building services, particularly in this type of custodial environment, will ensure that the installation will be completed in a timely manner and to the high standards required by the Home Office. “The facility will also deliver a more efficient building than is currently used for such purposes.” James Elliment, Willmott Dixon’s senior operations manager, added: “I am delighted with the progress that is currently being made on site and pleased to welcome SES and its team as we enter the next phase of construction. I believe the project will undoubtedly benefit from our shared experience of creating state-of-the-art custodial facilities throughout the UK.” SES is expected to conclude the project spring 2021.

Use of BIM on Queensferry Crossing and BIM at Explore Offsite Infrastructure

The construction industry has used centuries-old processes in order to manage their projects. The industry appeared to have been left behind by the advances in technology until recently, and with construction getting more and more complex and demanding while the expectation is for faster execution. Building Information Modelling, or BIM is helping to make a shift in the construction industry towards the adopting technology, by industrialising construction and helping to set up offsite assembly lines for manufacturing modules that then simply be assembled on-site by a leaner construction team. BIM offers the opportunity for the construction industry to expand and it is important that all companies in the supply chain work together to make the most of these advances and the possibilities that are created. Using BIM extends beyond the planning and design phase of the project and can be used throughout the building lifecycle, offering support for processes such as cost management, construction management, project management and facility operation. There is a constant challenge in the construction industry to deliver successful projects despite the tight budgets, limited manpower and accelerated schedules as well as limited or conflicting information offered for a project. The use of BIM helps these challenges by delivering collision detection at an initial stage while also identifying the exact location of any discrepancies on a project. Taking pace on the 5th December at the NEC in Birmingham is the Explore Offsite Infrastructure. At this event, Paul Newby and Gordon Cullen of SES Engineering Services, who have created a BIM Integrated Manufacturing with Remote Assembly on the iconic Queensferry crossing project. Phil and Gordon will be discussing their BIM Integrated Manufacturing processes while working on such an iconic project. The event will also include an outstanding speaker line up such as Phil Wilbraham, the Development Director for Heathrow Airport and Steven Kaye, the Head of Innovation at Anglian Water.
