Wellbeing schemes underused in U.S., says study

6 June 2016 | James Richards Only one third of American employees take part in workplace wellness schemes provided by their organisations, according to a new survey.   The American Psychological Association published the findings in a new report, Work and Well-Being on the basis of an online poll of 1,500 US citizens in March.   The results indicate that workplace schemes are not reaching at least two-thirds of the US workforce. It is not clear whether employees are simply unaware of the schemes or feel they are not appropriate to them.    Also, fewer than half of Americans in work (44 per cent) believe their organisational climate supports employee wellbeing and one-third report being “chronically stressed on the job”.   One of the key findings of the survey was that job satisfaction and motivation was strongly linked to whether senior leadership actively supported well-being initiatives.    Only 38 per cent of employees without leadership support felt motivated to do their best, and only 30 per cent said they were satisfied with their jobs.   Of those who had support from executives, 91 per cent were motivated to do their best, and the same amount said they had job satisfaction.   According to David W. Ballard, director of APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence, “When supervisors’ actions match their words, employees notice.”   He added: “Promoting employee well-being isn’t a singular activity, but is instead set up in a climate that is cultivated, embraced and supported by high-level leaders and managers.” Source link

Savills and Longevity Revealed That They are to Lead the Way In BREEAM’s

The property and carbon emission consultancy firms Savills and Longevity Partners have revealed that they are to lead the way in BREEAM’s new project to see whether 331 retail points all over Europe are eligible for BREEAM  certification. Originally initiated by Dedevco and BRE, the project is designed to reinvigorate the topic of sustainability in the building and construction sectors all over the European continent. With the lease margin of 3.2 million square meters across 11 different states in Europe, Redevco want to ensure that businesses in their area are committing to long term sustainability plans to improve the prospects of their enterprises and to consider the ways in which industrial activity can reduce its impact on the rest of the surrounding environment and the atmosphere. Redevco is ambitious in its announced intention to have all of its assets in Europe certified by the time of the year 2021, yet with the planned project for Savills and Longevity Partners this goal could very well become a possibility for the company to achieve. By assessing the different ways in which sustainability is certified, Redevco will be well prepared for the challenges that they will need to prepare for once they feel ready for the challenges of the BIU certification program. Using a sample of different assets based in places such as Holland and Portugal, this method of assessment will reduce costs for Redevco as well as act as a good way of measuring the ways in which the company can progress itself to achieve greater sustainability and environmental friendliness than ever before. Indeed, spokespeople for Longevity and Savills have expressed their enthusiasm for the project and confidence that it will give Redevco a very good idea on the different ways in which they can progress and the different initiatives that they can implement in order to be certified as more sustainable.

Phillips Lighting Unravel “Fans-First” Project

One of the major forces in the lighting industry worldwide, Phillips Lighting, have valiantly devoted their services to a project that will see Perth Stadium be the very first of its kind to include fully light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in the whole of the Oceania continent. This will undoubtedly put the stadium on the map as one of the most technologically advanced stadium sports locations in the southern hemisphere and will represent a major progressive investment for the whole of Australia. This initiative is the latest development of West Australia’s Government initiative to put a “fans-first” policy to the ways in which they conduct their developments in the region and the all-surround LED lighting system will be ideal to increasing the visibility and enjoyment prospects of punters attending the stadium. With the stadium having the ability to contain 60,000 people, the implementation of over 15,000 LED fittings that can be controlled and regulated appropriately will create an all-new visual experience and atmosphere for those coming to watch a game at the stadium. This will equally allow for the mixing of music with lighting to allow for even more spectacular pre-match shows that the stadium usually puts on, and the wonderful theatrical potential of the stadium will be used to the fullest now that the implementation of these new light fittings is going ahead. Perhaps even more impressively, it has been shown that the floodlights themselves, now that they have been implemented with LED, will be able to achieve the visual standards found on High Definition Television screens, a fantastic achievement for the stadium that all the fans in attendance, wherever they are placed, will be able to experience in their masses. Whether used as a sports venue or a rock musical concert space, the floodgates of new possibilities have been opened thanks to Phillips Lighting’s initiative to implement this quality new lighting system.

Evidence from JLL & Glenigan Shows Building Activity has Reduced

Reams of evidence gathered by the index for the financial year compiled by JLL & Glenigan’s Q4 2016, the amount of commercial construction rates in the United Kingdom has decreased by a very significant amount, falling 14.1 per cent to a total of £16.7 billion. Whilst this might still seem like an impressive figure, as this is representative of the levels of construction all across the country, there is evidently a large amount of concern from leading figures in the industry itself. Indeed, Helen Gough of JLL explains that whilst levels of residential building might have increased as the year has gone on and somewhat recovered from previous difficulties, the building design and construction of commercial projects has significantly gone down in the last twelve months. As Helen Gough points out, this is clearly a cause of lack of investment from businesses because of fears of economic losses and uncertainty in a post-referendum country. It is therefore to be somewhat expected that construction in the commercial sector has been somewhat more cautious than the building sector in this country might have been used to in previous years. Similarly, the levels of construction in the country have varied on the geographical areas where investment has been greater in some parts of the country than in others as the year has gone by. For example, building activity in the capital of this country went up by 2.7 per cent if one were to compare the levels to the year before, whilst in the areas of Yorkshire and the Midlands, construction levels and investment slumped this year by 22 per cent: so much for the government’s dreams of a Northern powerhouse. On the other hand, construction levels in the infirmary and healthcare sectors went up, as did building for hotel and short-stay accommodation businesses. Indeed, JLL & Glenigan will follow the course of building progress in this year of 2017 with the same interest and zeal.

Completed Renovation of Tadcaster Bridge

Infrastructure specialist Balfour Beatty has overseen ones of its more historically intriguing projects, the completed renovation of a structure which dates all the way back from the 18th Century. This structure, known as Tadcaster Bridge, is based in Yorkshire and had been in dire need of repair since December 2015 when violent flooding in the region resulted in part of it being destroyed. Since then, the implementation of works seeking to restore the structure to its original state of glory has been in place with the collaboration and hard work of North Yorkshire County Council. Indeed, whilst old, the structure is a vital necessity in joining the different sides of the region and thus enabling business initiatives and infrastructure in the region such as SMEs in the area to take place and prosper. The council also had the help of Balfour Beatty, who applied their extensive knowledge of how infrastructure works in order to ensure that the bridge was rebuilt safely and effectively to allow for the local economy to benefit the most from its new implementation. Indeed, David Robinson, acting as the Project Director of this ambitious construction project in the North Yorkshire region, expressed his delight and pride that the company was able to get involved with this initiative. As he explains, the fact that the structure itself was of a grade two listing did not deter Balfour Beatty in the slightest, and the company did their utmost to ensure that it was rebuilt with the attention and respect that it deserved. This included using and applying various materials and methods of reconstruction that would have been in use at the time that the bridge was originally built. Even through these perhaps more time-consuming methods of building and construction, and with adverse weather conditions and fluctuating water levels to contend with, Balfour Beatty successfully completed the project in a little over a year, and are very pleased that it is now finished and can now finally be used by the excited locals of the North Yorkshire area where the bridge is located.

NATIONAL SIGNAGE FIRM GIVES TO LOCAL HOSPITAL TO SUPPORT EMPLOYEE

A NATONAL signage firm, which specialises in the housebuilding sector, donated more than 20 pairs of acrylic turtle doves to a city hospital unit in support of one of its employees. North-West-based Sign Build, experts in providing top quality signage to housebuilders, made the donation to Preston Sharoe Green Hospital in support of their graphic designer, Kayleigh Gray. Kayleigh gave birth to her daughter, Emilia, at just 27 weeks, three weeks after the legal abortion limit and three months before her due date, on December 27th, 2014. Now, growing fast and full of energy, both Kayleigh and Emilia, with the help of Sign Build, wanted to give something back to the unit. Sign Build used its in-house machines to create 25 pairs of acrylic turtle doves, which were designed by Kayleigh and handed out to parents on the unit with one dove remaining with their baby whilst the other was taken home. Mark Cowin, director of Sign Build, said: “When Kayleigh asked us to produce the turtle doves, we didn’t hesitate in getting involved. “The Neo Natal Unit is extremely close to Kayleigh’s heart, and supports numerous families daily so we were proud to get involved and produce something so sentimental and support Kayleigh at the same time.” Emilia weighed just 1lb 11oz, 5lbs under the average weight for a baby girl and just a few centimetres bigger than a Samsung Galaxy Note mobile phone, and was immediately rushed to the Neo Natal Unit at the hospital where she underwent months of vital treatment and care. Each tag that is attached to a Turtle Dove reads; Turtle Doves represent love. Keep one at home and give the other to your very special baby, so you will never be far away. Kayleigh added: “Parents are extremely sentimental during their time at the hospital and this way, although they may not always be on the unit, their son or daughter will always be with them. “When I asked my boss Mark, owner of Sign Build, to help out, he didn’t hesitate in saying yes and I’m really proud that the company is helping out for something so close to my heart.”

Goodman expands portfolio in the Port of Hamburg

Goodman Group, a global leading owner, developer and manager of logistics real estate, is developing a new 12,700 sqm logistics centre in Altenwerder Freight Village in the Port of Hamburg. The facility is divided into two units, from which Goodman is constructing 7,100 sqm for Symrise, a leading supplier of fragrances and flavours. A further 5,600 sqm of logistics space developed by Goodman is available here for immediate lease. The property will be completed by summer 2017.  Symrise is a world leading supplier of fragrances and flavours, cosmetic raw materials and active ingredients as well as functional constituents for numerous industries. The group based in Holzminden, Lower Saxony, is represented in over 40 countries in Europe, Africa and the Near and Middle East, in Asia, the USA and Latin America. To combine the logistics capacities of several locations, the company opted for the development of a new logistics centre in the Port of Hamburg, one of the principal goods handling locations in Northern Europe. “In Goodman, we have found a reliable partner for the development of our logistics property. This flexible and high-quality property in one of the most popular logistics regions in Germany is an ideal base for worldwide distribution of our products. The logistics centre will be completed within the shortest time, so that we will control our logistics processes optimally from the Port of Hamburg as early as this year,” said Reiner Nowak, CEO of Symotion, a wholly owned logistics services subsidiary of Symrise AG. Safe storage The facility for Symrise, which has a total area of 7,100 sqm, includes 6,300 sqm of storage area. The hall height is 11.75 m and the goods are processed efficiently via six loading gates. In addition to this are 500 sqm for mezzanine levels, and 300 sqm for office and social areas. The building incorporates high specifications: in the building design, Goodman has taken into account the German water management act (WHG) and the implementation of separate fire compartments. As a result, Symrise benefits from safe storage of the entire product range and particularly of the hazardous goods. The entire facility is equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting. After completion, the property should receive the Gold certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). “In times when there is a shortage of space, Goodman has secured properties in Hamburg at an early stage. Thanks to our long-term land banking strategy, we were able to offer our customer Symrise logistics space in the Port of Hamburg, one of the most popular European logistics locations. Altenwerder freight village scores points with its direct connection to the A7 motorway and its immediate proximity to the neighbouring container terminal Altenwerder which is one of the most modern terminals worldwide,” said Christof Prange, Head of Business Development at Goodman in Germany.  Further space available In the same property in Altenwerder freight village, a further 5,600 sqm of logistics space with high-quality equipment will be available in summer 2017. This second unit includes 100 sqm for offices and social areas and 600 sqm of mezzanine levels. The property design allows flexible use, with possibilities such as cross-docking or outdoor storage. In line with sustainable building standards, Goodman has fitted the facility both with a continuous window strip on the mezzanine level for optimal use of daylight and with LED lighting. The foundation slab is sealed with a WHG-compliant film and suitable for the storage of goods in water protection class 3. Hamburg: Most attractive logistics region in Germany In the latest “Logistics + Real Estate 2016” study by analysis company bulwiengesa, Hamburg was identified as the most attractive of a total of 28 logistics regions in Germany. 225,000 sqm of logistics space were marketed in the first half of 2016, including the Goodman Interlink Hamburg logistics park in neighbouring Finkenwerder. By summer 2016, the company had fully let this within twelve months.
