West Ham not liable for Olympic Park FM

15 April 2016 | Jamie Harris Facilities services at the Olympic Stadium, which will become the new home of West Ham United Football Club this summer, will not be paid for by the club. The concession agreement between E20 Stadium LLP, WH Holding Limited and West Ham United Football Club was released earlier this month, following an appeal from the ground’s owners, the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), that was rejected. As well as revealing that West Ham is to pay £2.5 million a year to rent the stadium, after contributing just £15 million towards conversion costs, the agreement shows that the grantor, E20 Stadium LLP – a joint venture set up between the LLDC and London Newham Council – will cover the cost of a number of facilities services on stadium dates for each event.  Services to be provided include security, cleaning, pest control, all facilities and services required by a regulatory body, such as FM and maintenance services. E20 Stadium LLP is to also provide stadium heating, power, lighting, water and other utilities. In February 2015, FM World reported that Vinci Stadium, a subsidiary of Vinci Facilities, was appointed to manage all aspects of the former Olympic Stadium.  The 25-year contract, which was initially valued at £100 million, includes catering and stadium operation throughout events. Delaware North is also providing some catering provisions at the stadium, while OCS is contracted to provide crowd management services on site. Source link

Bidding Opens for £50m NHS Deal

Types of work to be delivered under the NHS London Procurement Partnership deal include building surveying services, civil engineering services and project management services. Interested parties have until 30 March to submit expressions of interest. The official notice in OJEU did not specify how many firms would be appointed, but said new firms could join the contract at any point during its lifetime. NHS trusts, bodies providing NHS services and other public sector bodies will be able to use the contract. The NHS LPP opened a £750m framework for construction works across the public sector in January. That 10-lot framework will be broken into regional areas and will focus on different types and values of work, including modular projects. Local MP David Lidington: HS2 Managers must ‘Raise Their Game’ After HS2 is Granted Royal Assent

The parliamentary Bill to build the line from London to Birmingham received royal assent on Thursday morning, opening the way for construction work to begin. Local MP David Lidington said: “This result is clearly disappointing but not altogether unsurprising. The scale of the majority in the Lords was bigger than in the House of Commons. It’s not a day most people locally will want to cheer and look back on fondly but we can’t say it was unexpected. “In terms of where we go now, there are two key elements. The first is that we need to continue to push for environmental mitigation. I will be taking a small Wendover delegation to see the minister responsible for HS2 and to have another push for the mined tunnel to reduce the environmental and noise impacts. “Secondly, it’s important to ensure that as the works start to prepare for the construction, we get a much better quality of public engagement from HS2 limited than they have previously shown. “There are several important issues that must be worked out, for example the management of additional traffic, and how that will impact on local roads. I’m currently having a dialogue with HS2 limited and South Central Ambulance Service, and the potential impact the works will have on ambulance routes. “A code of conduct for construction companies and workers needs to be established, with clear rules and limits on noise, dust and disturbance. Residents also need a complaints mechanism so they have a means of quick redress. “There is a lot of detail that needs to be ironed out but I think the prime responsibility must lie with the senior managers at HS2 limited. They have to raise their game.” Read more at http://www.bucksherald.co.uk/news/transport/local-mp-david-lidington-hs2-managers-must-raise-their-game-after-hs2-is-granted-royal-assent-1-7843205

£36m Ellon ‘Super School’ Beds in

Aberdeenshire Council have unveiled a £36m ‘super-school’ in Ellon; including 25m pool, theatre and cinema-style assembly hall, with pupils having moved in last June. Designed by Aberdeenshire Council and Keppie Ellon Academy also includes two gymnasiums, four games halls, outdoor sports pitches, five community rooms, a fitness suite and a 240-space canteen with part of the building earmarked for the North-East Scotland College Ellon Learning Centre. Internally the school is arranged across three levels of accommodation with the ground floor dedicated to sports and the creative sector while the first floor is given over to maths, business studies and science. A top floor plays host to the humanities together with a library with museum-style glass cabinets displaying local artefacts and items of historical interest. Project manager Mike Porter commented: “One of the main problems with the old school was that it was a split campus, divided 50-50 across a main road. What we have now is a well-lit, open environment which creates a very good space in which to both work and learn. It is pleasing to see the end result of a lot of people’s efforts. We had to get it up and running quite quickly but we are under budget, on time and on programme.” Ellon Academy is a direct replacement for the old campus dating back to the early 1900s and 1960’s but which was cleaved in two by a main road through the town centre.  Since demolished it lives on in the form of a new artwork on the glass front of the swimming pool designed by artist in residence Mary Bourne. Charity Marie Curie Opens Immersive Art Installation ‘Garden of Light’ in London

Thousands of handmade daffodils illuminate to celebrate the Great Daffodil Appeal 2017. Thousands of handmade daffodils are shining in London’s Paternoster Square in a new immersive art installation to mark the launch of Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal 2017. The ‘Garden of Light’ features 2,100 illuminated handcrafted daffodils, each representing a Marie Curie Nurse. The daffodils illuminate at night to symbolise the light these nurses bring to people living with a terminal illness in their darkest hours. The installation, created by renowned public artists Greyworld, is open to the public in London from 1st March to 12th March but will also travel the country and open to visitors in Edinburgh and Cardiff. Marie Curie ambassadors Frankie Bridge and Stephen Mangan both attended the launch in support of the work done by the charity. It features winding pathways for the public to walk amongst the flowers whilst they hear recordings of voices reading real-life letters sent to Marie Curie Nurses from the families of patients they’ve supported bringing to life the individual stories of only a handful of people who are affected by terminal illness each year. Visitors can also leave behind a memory of someone they love by writing a message on a petal and placing it on the ‘Memory Wall’, which over the course of the installation will form a giant daffodil made of memories. Marie Curie Ambassador Frankie Bridge said, ‘The Garden of Light is a beautiful place to reflect on the amazing work carried out by Marie Curie Nurses and to remember the people we love. ‘I’ll be wearing my Marie Curie daffodil throughout March for all the people I have loved and to raise awareness of the work the charity does. I really hope people join me in making every daffodil count to ensure more people get the care and support they need from these incredible nurses.’ Read more at http://www.designcurial.com/news/charity-marie-curie-opens-immersive-art-installation-garden-of-light-in-london-5752735/

6 Preventative maintenance tips for commercial plumbing

6 Preventative Maintenance Tips For Commercial Plumbing People often underestimate the importance of plumbing in their commercial business, but think about it; you can work hard to create the best business in the world, but something as understated as a water leak could cause thousand of pounds worth of damage or even closure. For businesses, such as restaurants and hotels, the quality of your plumbing is pivotal for cleaning of utensils and guest use. The problem is; when things go wrong they are expensive to fix. Getting the help of a professional plumber is not the most cost effective solution when you’re trying to run a business – luckily there are actions you can take to prevent ever needing to call in a professional. Here are some of the ways in which you can keep on top of your plumbing before it becomes a problem. Unclog drains If the drainage speed of your sinks is a little on the slow side you should act before it gets any worse. This can be solved easily using a mixture of hot water and vinegar to pour down your drains and dislodge any unwanted debris. This should be done routinely every three months just to keep on top of the situation – you never know what might have accumulated down there! Check the pressure There really is nothing worse than a limp shower, so if you own a hotel and your showers are lacking water pressure then your guests aren’t likely to return – and could leave a bad review in the process! Using a pressure gauge can help you test the pressure in your water circulation system. Investing in top of the line shower pumps will prevent any issues in low water pressure. Stop the leaks If you ignore a leaking tap or showerhead, it’s not going to get any better – drips are far more likely to get worse over time if left unchecked. These drips may seem harmless right now, but they are actually adding a substantial amount to your water bills, as well as potentially causing other problems. Check the handles of the taps/showerheads to make sure that you don’t have a drip when they are turned off and inspect under the sinks for any potential water damage. Protect your toilets Leaks or clogging in toilets can spell disaster for your business – if your toilets go bust, your reputation could soon follow. Making sure you have a respected manufacturer of your toilets that offer toilet plumbing for the commercial sector will make sure you are ready to cope with the heavy demands. Flush only what’s necessary When it comes to toilets, the only thing you should be flushing is toilet paper and human waste – anything else can cause clogging and spell disaster. For a commercial business this may be difficult to enforce as you don’t have total control, but putting up signs reminding people of this fact could be your best bet to avoiding potential trouble. Inspect your appliances Sometimes the leaks can come from something you wouldn’t normally expect, like a refrigerator or washing machine, and can cause mould/mildew if you don’t notice before it’s too late. Unexplained puddles are an obvious giveaway, but you would be best served checking underneath every so often just to be safe.
