CHAS urges construction sector to embrace building safety scheme

CHAS, the supply-chain risk management expert, has become a registered signatory of Building a Safer Future and is encouraging other members of the built environment sector to do the same.  The Building a Safer Future Charter was launched in response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s review of building regulations and fire safety to instigate the cultural and behavioural changes required to achieve a safer building system. Signatories must make five commitments to prioritise safety first in the built environment. These include:  Collaborate to spearhead culture change and be the voice of building safety across the sector. Be transparent in the interests of safety, sharing key information with residents, clients, contractors and statutory bodies in a useful and accessible manner in the design, construction and occupation phases of the process. Make safety a key factor of choice in who they work with, ensuring that building safety is placed at the centre of selection decisions without compromising quality or value for money. Ensure that the voices and safety of residents, visitors and employees are central to their decision-making process. Set out and communicate clear responsibilities within their organisation and with their partners, ensuring everyone with a stake in the building during design, construction and occupation understands their role and has the time and resources they need to achieve and maintain building safety. Any organisations or individuals who work in or have a professional connection or interest in the UK built environment can sign up to the Building a Safer Future Charter. It applies to any organisation involved in pre, during and post-construction activity (including maintenance and residential/community organisations). CHAS Managing Director, Ian McKinnon, comments: “As an authority and trusted advisor on health and safety compliance, responsible for setting industry benchmarks, CHAS is committed to the continuous improvement of health & safety standards in the UK. “We therefore fully support the commitments set out in the Building a Safer Future Charter and actively encourage our contractors and other members of the construction community to do the same. “The more widely the scheme is embraced, the more successful it will be in driving the culture change required to improve building safety.”

State of the art veterinary hospital coming to West Longbridge

St. Modwen, the UK’s leading developer of new communities and high-quality homes, has received planning permission from Birmingham City Council  to build a new state of the art veterinary hospital which will create up to 150 skilled new jobs at West Longbridge Business Park. . It represents a major milestone in the development of the park as it becomes a leading centre for science and technology, medicine, precision engineering and R&D. Work on the two-storey hospital and its 3-acre site at the southern gateway of West Longbridge will start early next year with a planned opening in 2023. When complete, the new facility will deliver best-in-class care and treatment and will be a centre of veterinary excellence for the region.  This first element of West Longbridge Business Park will lead the way for the rest of the development. West Longbridge Business Park will create up to 5,000 new jobs, with work on access roads and landscaping already underway following £20m of infrastructure investment in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). The new hospital will feature research, treatment, diagnostic, laboratory and administrative space and will have the most advanced medical equipment including CT and MRI scanners. The building will be located next to spacious parkland and will benefit from access to new meadow spaces and native hedgerows, with foot and cycle paths providing direct access to and from Longbridge Town Centre and its extensive retail and leisure facilities. Planning permission for the building was sought by St. Modwen on behalf of IVC Evidensia, Europe’s leading veterinary care provider with 21,000 staff based across 12 countries, including the UK. West Longbridge Business Park offers unbeatable local, regional and national connectivity and is a sustainable addition to the wider £1bn Longbridge masterplan. In addition to the business park, the investment will see an attractive new residential neighbourhood of 350 homes also created. Elliot Sellars, Development Director at St. Modwen, said: “The new hospital for IVC Evidensia will be a real centrepiece for Longbridge, providing new jobs and opportunities as well as cutting edge new treatment and facilities. It is the first key element of West Longbridge and sets a high bar for what we will be delivering at West Longbridge. “As we continue discussions with other potential occupiers, we are building on the progress and ongoing investment we have already delivered across Longbridge. We are committed to creating a high-quality business park integrated into the region’s business eco-system here at West Longbridge and look forward to making further announcements about the progress of the site in the near future.” John Turkington, Head of Referral Business Development at IVC Evidensia adds: “Our new hospital is now one step closer and once open will provide industry leading veterinary facilities for communities in Birmingham and throughout the West Midlands. It will offer a 24/7 service and utilise the latest technology to deliver the best diagnoses and treatments available.” “Our new state-of-the-art hospital in Longbridge will be staffed with experienced, high-calibre teams and has been designed to enable the best outcomes through working collaboratively in a sustainable and rewarding working environment that delivers the excellence in client and patient care which we have become known for.”

Firm adds to their exclusive Cat® range

~ BNH one of first to add two new Cat 302.7 machines to their fleet ~ Plant hire and waste management firm Buckland Newton Hire (BNH) has increased its fleet of Cat machinery from exclusive Caterpillar® supplier Finning UK and Ireland, by adding two 302.7 mini excavators. The Dorset-based company managed to stay ahead of the curve by being one of the first companies to order this new machine. BNH is not only one of the first companies to have the 302.7s, but it is also unique in Dorset by having a fleet of only Cat equipment, totalling 70 machines. The company cites the long-lasting reliability of Cat machines as one of the reasons it continues to purchase them, as well as the high resale value of the vehicles. The resale value is particularly important to BNH as it purchases the newest Cat models almost immediately after release, to keep its fleet cutting edge. BNH was quick to snap up the new 302.7s due to them being the most popular size of mini excavator chosen by builders. The hydraulic system that the 302.7s come with means that these machines still pack a powerful punch, so operators don’t have to sacrifice power for size. “We see these as an essential purchase for any plant hire business,” said Brad Perrett, Manager at BNH. “Over the 30 years that we’ve working with them, Finning has continued to provide quality products and have never let us down — we’re now up to 75 Cat machines in the fleet. “We sent the 302.7s out as soon as they arrived and have not seen a single one back here yet; they are in such high demand that they have been out every day. We have already received positive feedback on these machines from customers on our Facebook page, which is very promising.” “It’s always a pleasure to work with Brad and the team at BNH as they are always first in line for the latest machines and technology from Caterpillar,” said Jack Pilgrim, Territory Account Manager at Finning. “The new 302.7s will be replacing the older D and E series that were previously used, making BNH one of Dorset’s few plant hire companies with such an extensive and up-to-date fleet”. The 302.7 mini excavators are designed to have an ergonomic control layout with adjustable wrist rest and travel pedals in order to minimize operator fatigue. The engine is positioned to reduce the heat and noise that travels into the operator’s station, increasing operator comfort and worker productivity. For more information on Cat next generation excavators or the newest machine in the range, the Cat 302.7, visit www.finning.com.

These apartments have been created with this in mind. Private outside spaces and open plan living areas provide a balanced living environment whilst communal gardens provide an idyllic setting to unwind and relax or stretch the legs after a busy day of home working,” said Krete Luca, Sales Director at Latimer, part of the Clarion Housing Group. Data Reveals 21.3M UK Properties Need Sustainable Retrofits

Data Reveals 21.3M UK Properties Need Sustainable Retrofits

Proptech investment platform houzen has highlighted the scale of the work required to reduce carbon emissions from residential properties in the UK ad which need sustainable retrofits. Known for its innovative use of property data, the company has put the issue of sustainable retrofits under the microscope. Its algorithms have revealed that some 21.3 million UK properties will need some kind of sustainable retrofit in order to make a positive impact on the planet. “Having analysed the COP26 pledges in detail, it’s frightening to see how many long-term promises have been included. These effectively kick commitments to the curb until it is too late – they are false promises that will result in countless lives being lost and livelihoods destroyed. It’s the action we take in the next few years that will be key to curbing global warming. Aiming to change by 2050 or later is not good enough,” said Eashita Saxena, Sustainability Analyst, houzen. According to the houzen team, both individual homeowners and the housing industry as a whole can begin making changes immediately. Cities are currently responsible for 71-76% of energy related CO2 emissions, with the construction and operation of buildings, along with the manufacture of the materials required to build them, playing a major role in this. The solution to the construction sector’s problem emissions is not complex, but it will take time, money and effort. There’s a need for extensive collaboration across the supply chain in order to promote sustainable practices and reduce embodied emissions. Modern methods of construction have a clear role to play here. Low-carbon solutions and circular solutions are already available. But they need to be implemented at scale. And, of course, who should foot the bill for this is under intense debate. Some companies are committing their own funds – French multinational Saint-Gobain is a leading example of this – but there is still a major need for government support with the cost of implementing more sustainable practices. Patrick Vallance, the UK government’s chief scientific advisor, acknowledges that cost is an issue, stating that “We have many of the technologies needed to tackle the problem but they need to be improved,” and that technologies that can help reduce emissions need to “come down in cost, they need to increase in convenience, they need to be applicable right across the globe and we need to scale them.” There’s an educational element at play too. The Construction Leadership Council, for example, has joined forces with ITN Productions Industry News to deliver a ‘Building a Greener Britain’ programme aimed at delivering a zero-carbon built environment. The programme explores the cutting-edge construction methods that focus on sustainability. At present, the building materials and construction sector accounts for an estimated 40% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. This is why the sector is so key to efforts to reduce the rate of global warming, in addition to what individual homeowners are able to achieve in the buildings that already exist.

6 trends to follow in the commercial construction industry

Do you have a commercial construction business and want to know what you should be keeping up with and what the new trends are? Do you feel like your business is a bit old-fashioned and want to know what you could be doing to keep up with the trends? The commercial construction industry is a very exciting place to be right now. There are many different trends that have come into play and will continue to grow over the next few years. For example, green buildings are becoming increasingly popular as more people want their office spaces to reflect their values and attitudes towards the environment. Another trend is improving worker productivity by creating open floor plans with flexible workspaces so employees can collaborate better together. These trends may not all apply specifically to you but it’s important for any company in this field to remain up to date on what’s happening to stay competitive and relevant within the industry. Here are 6 trends to follow in the commercial construction industry. The use of sustainable materials First on our list, when it comes to following the trends in the commercial construction industry, we have the use of sustainable materials. When it comes to the construction of buildings something that many people are placing a big emphasis on is the use of sustainable materials. These are materials that can’t be depleted easily, but also can be recreated easily. Rather than using rock and stone, which although can be found in abundance, people are choosing living materials such as wood, or even things that can easily be man-made. On top of that, other living materials such as specific algae can be used as a way to self-mend different kinds of concrete. When talking about concrete, it is also a sustainable material that you can use, and if you’re looking for professionals that produce highly durable floors you can check out what TCF West in Winnipeg offers. They are leading in the industry, and with them you can rely on a cost-effective service. A focus on energy efficiency These days, with the world suffering from global warming and everything that comes along with it, a lot of companies are making a concerted effort to go green and make use of an energy-efficient lifestyle. This goes for their products, and production, as well as the building itself. Many of these new companies make use of renewable energy, but they also contribute to the collection of renewable energy. Lots of businesses have their own solar panels which are used to either power the whole building or just certain parts like having heated water or lights on.  This is done to lower their carbon footprint and try their best to reduce the rate at which global warming is progressing. Other businesses are demolishing inefficient properties and are building new ones from scratch only to improve the environment from the inside out. Bella Contracting Services is where you can find demolition contractors in Connecticut if you’re thinking about making such drastic changes to your business. Improved indoor air quality The quality of air in a building is not something that people will typically pay too much attention to, especially those who work there. However, it is important to note, that especially if you are working in a big city where there is a lot of pollution, the air quality can eventually take its toll on you. As a business, you should be implementing different ways to improve the quality of the air in your building. This can be by having filters placed in your pipes that are circulating the air, and changing them regularly, or even by having humidifiers if you are in dryer conditions to make it more bearable. A decrease in the usage of toxic chemicals Toxic chemicals are commonly used among different businesses, depending on what they produce, but while they pay attention to not letting the consumers come in contact with these toxic chemicals, less caution is taken with the workers. By eliminating toxic chemicals, not only will you create a better working environment for your staff, but you will also help reduce the damage that your business is doing to the environment. Increased emphasis on indoor environmental factors, such as lighting and acoustics A big trend in the commercial industry is the layout and design change of these places. Many people may be used to dull yellow lighting, gross carpeted flooring, and an unwelcoming environment, however, there is now a big emphasis on the working environment and how the look of it can be beneficial to the worth ethic and productivity. For instance, you can include an open floor plan where people can be with each other and have a better time working together. Something else you can do is improve the quality of the lighting. Many businesses are stuck using old yellow lighting, but by making use of LED lighting it not only looks more modern, but it creates a lighter environment.
