CALCULATE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Two-Thirds of Architects now Calculate Environmental Impact

NBS’ 2023 Digital Construction Report reveals major drive for green metrics Today, NBS, the platform for connected construction information, reveals the results of its Digital Construction Report. The study explores the industry’s evolving relationship between digital technology and safety and sustainability – the sector’s biggest challenges. This year it showed two-thirds of professionals using digital tools to calculate environmental-related metrics, a sign that sustainable design is now intrinsic to construction processes. Significantly, four in ten use digital methods to understand the embodied carbon attached to a project – that is, the amount of CO2 emitted during construction. A similar figure (38%) also uses it to quantify the energy demands of structures and the components that go into them. There’s room for improvement, but the figures show a clear push towards lower carbon outcomes. Off-site on the up Continuing with the theme of sustainable construction, NBS also analysed levels of off-site construction, an area often associated with greener building practices, due to greater control of materials and waste. The results found that MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) continues to gather pace. Over half of professionals (57%) had been part of a construction project that had used or required off-site construction within the last year. This is an increase of 7% since 2021. This news comes despite the closure of several high-profile MMC factories. Delving deeper, manufacturers are the group most likely to be involved with MMC – 7 in 10 had worked with an off-site element, followed by nearly two-thirds of contractors (63%) and over half of consultants (58%). This increase could reflect an industry drive towards net zero as well as recent government backing for further standardisation within MMC. Living in the cloud The report also found that cloud computing is becoming further embedded within building practices, with four out of five now using it. The stats highlight the positive way technology is supporting collaborative working, with three-quarters using it to share documents and information with clients (77%). A similar number (74%) use it to collaborate with team members and produce 3D models, specifications, and other important documents. Taking full responsibility NBS’ Digital Construction Report also highlighted increases in the number of professionals following naming conventions when sharing information (77%, up from 2021 figures) – an area that can improve the organisation and management of data. Additionally, over half of respondents reported using interoperable formats like IFC, revealing the growing importance of easily shareable construction data. However, the report also showed that there are more opportunities to be unlocked by using digital technologies to help with compliance. The study found that only a third of respondents (34%) were involved with detailed responsibility matrixes (DRM), a process that sets out responsibility for each element of design to ensure greater accountability. Worryingly, this figure has dropped since 2021 (39%). Notably, this figure hovered at around half for architects. This comes despite increased levels of legislation attached to the Building Safety Act, such as the introduction of planning ‘gateways’ which requires a detailed breakdown of responsibilities on an individual level. Additionally, less than a third of suppliers (28%) currently use a PIM system to manage product information, pointing to information gaps in the construction supply chain. Nevertheless, well over half (56%) provide digital objects for the majority or all their products, a positive result. Commenting on the survey’s results, David Bain, NBS’ Research Manager, said, “The uptick in professionals seeking environmental-related metrics shows an industry putting sustainability front and centre. The drive towards Net-Zero has no doubt been a catalyst alongside the evolving legislative landscape – there’s never been a greater emphasis on the environmental impact of building practices. “The study has also yielded unexpectedly positive stats around off-site construction. Despite media headlines and high-profile factory closures giving the impression that MMC isn’t a popular choice, the results show a different story: more professionals are embracing off-site elements than ever before. “Overall, we’ve seen some marked improvements that the industry should be proud of. There’s an opportunity here to improve digital information sharing, for which professionals have a legal requirement. The ‘golden thread’ and the use of structured data is creating a safer future for all.” Click here for the full report 723 construction professionals took part in this year’s Digital Construction Survey, which included views from architects/engineers and other consultants, contractors, clients, and suppliers in the UK and beyond. Previously known as the NBS BIM Report, the study is a benchmark for changing attitudes towards tech adoption and new technologies. Ideal Heating space-saving Evomod boilers heat one of the UK’s tallest buildings

Ideal Heating space-saving Evomod boilers heat one of the UK’s tallest buildings

Four Evomod 1000kW output boilers from Ideal Heating – Commercial Products have been installed at Beetham Tower in Manchester, which has the distinction of being one of the UK’s tallest buildings outside of London. The 47-storey building, which is home to the Hilton Hotel and private residential apartments, had been heated by four gas fired atmospheric steel one piece boilers, with a total heat output of 4800kW, since its inception in 2006. With the boilers coming towards the end of their working lives, and with the building owners looking to improve energy efficiency, the decision was made to replace them rather than attempt ongoing repairs. Manchester based mechanical and electrical contractor Atmostherm, a long standing Ideal Heating – Commercial Products customer, chose Evomod boilers for this site, based on Evomod’s small footprint and modular nature which made locating and installation easier than expected in the small plant room which had restricted access.  Available in 250, 500, 750 and 1000kW outputs, the Evomod will achieve an output up to 1MW from a single unit solution together with a minimum footprint that enables the product to be installed where space is limited. Each module provides a maximum of 250kW heat output and will modulate down through a sophisticated control system. At Beetham Tower, four Evomod 1000kW output boilers have been installed by Atmostherm with Plate Heat Exchangers to achieve the appropriate pressure on the output in order to pump the hot water across the entire building. Atmostherm took advantage of Ideal Heating’s free commissioning service on this project, which has been designed to save installers time and money, plus ensures the appliance is correctly commissioned and operating.  Ideal Heating is the only manufacturer to offer a free of charge commissioning service and has done since its launch in 2018. The level of service and technical backup supplied by Ideal Heating were important to Atmostherm as Project Director Andy Payne comments: “The service from Ideal Heating has been brilliant from beginning to end.  The team were available to come to site for visits when required and the commissioning process went very smoothly. They were also on hand to help us when it came to deciding to use the plate heat exchanger to achieve our desired output.” The newly installed Evomod boilers are now fully operational and are being used to carry out the heating across the entire building, including the residential apartments, and the Hilton Hotel and its health and fitness facilities. Ideal Heating delivers commercial heating solutions that are at the forefront of technology and developed in line with the latest market trends and legislation. Tate Liverpool appoints Gilbert-Ash as main contractor for gallery transformation

Tate Liverpool appoints Gilbert-Ash as main contractor for gallery transformation

Tate Liverpool today announced Gilbert-Ash as the main contractor for a major reimagining of the landmark gallery on Royal Albert Dock. This £29.75 million redevelopment will transform one of the UK’s most important spaces for modern and contemporary art. Designed by 6a architects, the plans have recently been granted planning permission and listed building consent. This year Gilbert-Ash completed work on the National Portrait Gallery in London and previously worked on the Stirling Prize winning Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. They have also acted as the main contractor for other celebrated cultural capital projects, including Battersea Arts Centre and Bristol Old Vic. Their heritage portfolio includes the refurbishment and restoration of the Grade II-listed City of London Freemen’s School and the refurbishment and extension of the Grade I-listed kitchen and dining building at Jesus College, Cambridge. Emma King, Capital Director, Tate, said: “Gilbert-Ash’s track record of working to the highest standards on both cultural and heritage buildings makes them the perfect contractors to deliver the reimagined Tate Liverpool. We look forward to collaborating with the architects and contractors to deliver this once-in-a-generation renewal, creating an art museum fit for the 21st century.” Raymond Gilroy, Construction Director, Gilbert-Ash, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to deliver this landmark and transformational project at Tate Liverpool. It is another unique project to add to our extensive portfolio in the Cultural, Arts and Heritage sector. Project Director, Rodney Coalter, who recently completed the National Portrait Gallery, London, will head up the team. The team is already in place finalising plans to deal with the many logistical and technical challenges that lie ahead, in advance of a start on site in early 2024. We are looking forward to developing successful and collaborative relationships with both our new client at Tate Liverpool, the wider project consultant team, and to a very successful project delivery.” Tate Liverpool is housed in an iconic 1846 warehouse that was redesigned by Sir James Stirling and Michael Wilford in the late 1980’s as the cornerstone of the reinvention of the Royal Albert Dock. It helped establish Tate as a pioneer for arts-led regeneration in the UK. The upcoming transformation will reimagine the gallery to meet the scale and ambition of today’s most exciting artists and to welcome visitors into a brand new museum environment. The designs include a new public ‘Art Hall’ on the ground floor, opened up to admit daylight and views across the historic dock. New gallery spaces over three floors will showcase the incredible diversity of Tate’s collection and are interspersed with public riverside foyers. Opening up the gallery’s façade will increase its visibility on the waterfront and within the Royal Albert Dock, creating an inviting destination with striking spaces for learning, play and relaxation. Environmental standards and thermal performance will be significantly improved with new services replacing fossil fuel, with renewables and natural ventilation introduced to the building to ensure better energy performance. Planning permission and listed building consent for the project was granted by Liverpool City Council in October and construction will commence early in 2024. Funding for the £29.7 million project has come from the UK Government, including £10m from the Levelling Up Fund, as part of a successful combined £20m bid with National Museums Liverpool, and £6.6m from the DCMS Public Bodies Infrastructure Fund. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority also awarded funding for the developmental phase of the project via its Strategic Investment Fund. Changes to concrete ‘recipe’ will help UK construction slash carbon emissions

Changes to concrete ‘recipe’ will help UK construction slash carbon emissions

One of the most significant changes to the traditional ‘recipe’ for making concrete since the 1980s, is set to be introduced in the UK, helping architects and engineers decarbonise the construction of buildings and infrastructure. Changes to standards for concrete have been published by BSI, the business improvement and standards company, and could save 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year – the equivalent of over 3,500 transatlantic flights – if the changes are adopted across all UK construction sites. The new concrete ‘recipe’ blends finely ground limestone from UK quarries with other materials such as fly ash, a by-product from power generation and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), a by-product from the steel industry. UK Concrete and cement manufacturing accounts for 7.7m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equating to 1.5 per cent of the UK’s total carbon emissions. The majority of the carbon dioxide emissions is associated with the production of cement, and using these supplementary materials such as limestone powder helps to reduce the amount of traditional cement (CEM I) to create a lower carbon concrete. With the new standards now available, the CEM I content in concrete can be replaced with up to 20 per cent of limestone powder, a product widely available in the UK. For every 5 per cent of limestone powder added, a 5 per cent CO2 reduction can be delivered per tonne of concrete, according to MPA UK Concrete, the group representing the UK concrete industry. “Making concrete is a bit like baking except that with concrete, ingredients are combined to alter properties such as strength, deliver environmental performance and change the aesthetics of the finished material,” says Elaine Toogood, director, architecture and sustainable design at the Concrete Centre.  “In a climate emergency, this new approved standard is important to helping architects and engineers significantly lower embodied manufacturing emissions today and in the future, while delivering structural strength in buildings and infrastructure. “Providing a new generation of concretes are an important part of the UK concrete and cement industry’s roadmap to net zero alongside other technologies including the use of decarbonised transport, fuel switching and Carbon Capture, Usage or Storage (CCUS) technology.” For many years, GGBS and fly ash have been repurposed as an ingredient for concrete, but less of it is being produced in the net zero transition, so the use of limestone fines is important for helping to provide a sustainable source of materials to continue to lower the embodied emissions of concrete.  The new specification changes are part of a rigorous research and testing process over two years with the results then independently assessed for inclusion into the standard by the BSI technical committee for concrete. The concrete and cement industry has a strong track record of decarbonisation, having already delivered a 53% reduction in absolute carbon emissions since 1990 and is decarbonising, as a whole, faster than the UK economy. Key milestone for elevated mass transit system at HS2’s Interchange station

HS2 Ltd has today (4th December, 2023) started the search for a contractor to lead the enabling works programme for the new Automated People Mover (APM) at Interchange Station in Solihull.  This is the first package of work to be procured for the elevated mass transit system, which will transport thousands of passengers, every hour, between Interchange Station, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham International Railway Station, and Birmingham Airport.  The contract, worth up to £2m, is being procured through the government’s Crown Commercial Services Framework, which enables registered suppliers to bid for the work.  The APM enabling works programme includes topographical surveys, ground investigations and utility surveys.  It is expected to take around 12 months to complete the works, paving the way for construction of the APM’s main infrastructure components, which include four stops, a 2.2km long viaduct, and a maintenance facility.  Ailsa Waygood, HS2’s Project Client for Interchange Station and the APM said:  “The APM is vital for both Interchange Station and the surrounding area. It will connect millions of people to new opportunities to live, work and play in Solihull.  “Arden Cross plan to bring new homes, learning hubs and businesses to the area around the station, and both the NEC and Airport are turbocharging their growth plans in readiness for its arrival. This is a hugely exciting time for the West Midlands region, and we look forward to onboarding our first contractor to help turn this vision into reality.”  Sean Butler, HS2’s Senior Project Manager the APM said:  “Launching the procurement for the APM enabling works is the result of several years of collaboration and engagement across HS2, DfT and stakeholders in the region.  “This is the first step in the journey to deliver the APM in time for HS2 services arriving at Interchange station.”  The successful bidder for the enabling works contract will deliver a unique programme of work that spans the entire 2.2km route the APM will follow, crossing the M42, West Coast Mainline, Birmingham Airport and Pendigo Lake.  Findings from the ground investigation works, topographical and bathymetric surveys will help to inform the existing design for the APM and future works packages.   2024 is shaping up to be a big year in preparation for the APM’s arrival. HS2 expects to award the enabling works contract early next year, with works to commence in the spring.   Two further procurement opportunities will also begin next year, as HS2 invites suppliers to tender for the contract to design and supply a transport system and the 25-year transport operation and maintenance contract. Market engagement will also continue throughout 2024 as HS2 steps up its search for a supplier to deliver the APM’s infrastructure components.  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Willerby Landscapes wins top prize at National Landscape Awards

Willerby Landscapes has won the Grand Award at this year’s Green-tech-sponsored National Landscape Awards for its Battersea Power Station Phase 2 Roof Garden. This is the 7th Grand Award win for the Edenbridge-based company, setting a record for the highest number of top prizes won by any company in the 47-year history of the Awards. The annual National Landscape Awards are the largest of their kind in Europe and are open to all members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). The Awards recognise excellence in landscape design, construction, and maintenance both in the UK and overseas, as well as exceptional supplier service and employer excellence. The Grand Award is the ultimate accolade, given to the entry judged to be the best out of all 69 National Awards presented earlier in the year. Kris Nellist, Managing Director of headline sponsor Green-tech, commented, “As the UK’s largest supplier to the landscape industry, we are committed to raising its profile through the National Landscape Awards. We congratulate Willerby Landscapes and all the other award winners on their achievements, which demonstrate the extraordinary quality of the work delivered by our fellow members.”  The winning scheme is part of the regeneration of the iconic Battersea Power Station. The full 43-acre, Grade II* listed site is being transformed into a mixed-use development, including residential, bars, restaurants, office space, shops and entertainment space. Phase II includes the creation of the numerous gardens, courtyard, terraces, balconies and walkways, designed by LDA Design and Andy Sturgeon Design, with the landscaping works completed by Willerby Landscapes. Chair of the judging panel, John Melmoe, said, “Every aspect of this impressive project, from planning and design, site preparation, health and safety, and logistics, to the craftsmanship, horticultural expertise, and detailing, has been exemplary. When problems are seen as opportunities to excel and perfection is the collective goal, it is little wonder that the industry uses this contractor’s achievements as a benchmark. This year they have raised the bar once again.” This year’s National Landscape Awards were judged over the summer with 69 National Landscape Awards bestowed on 50 members of the Association in September and 24 Principal, four Special and the coveted Grand Award announced live on stage at the prestigious Grosvenor House ceremony. British Association of Landscape Industries Chief Executive, Wayne Grills commented: “These Awards are coveted because they truly represent the best of our industry. Every UK construction and design project is visited personally by a Judge and scrutinised individually, then decisions are debated by the Judging Panel to make sure they demonstrate the level of excellence expected from a National Landscape Award winner.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
