First new office development to complete in Leeds in 2022 tops out

CEG welcomed the leader of Leeds City Council and other stakeholders in the city to its flagship Globe Point development today (3/3/22) for a topping out ceremony. BAM Construction commenced the development in May 2021 on behalf of CEG and is set for full completion this summer. Simon Sutcliffe, Construction Director for BAM, said: “BAM’s buildings are winning sustainability awards across the UK. Our knowledge and understanding, which spans both buildings and the design and construction process, is being transferred to Globe Point. This flagship city centre building is a BREEAM Excellent development and it is really taking shape.” Providing next generation workspace for over 400 people, the 37,800 sq ft seven-storey building on Globe Road is striking, with its flat iron design providing spectacular views across the city from the roof terrace gardens. Responding to occupiers’ expectations and the new ways of working, Globe Point will deliver some of the highest quality workspace in Leeds, along with ground floor break-out space and café kitchen.  Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “This is a really exciting milestone, not only for the Globe Point development, but also for the regeneration of Leeds’s Temple district and the wider South Bank area. “High-quality projects like Globe Point are a sign of the strength of the Leeds economy as we continue our recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and redouble our efforts to deliver jobs and opportunities for all. It promises to be a worthy and very impressive addition to our city’s skyline.” Globe Point will be the first new build office to complete in Leeds City Centre this year and is the first of CEG’s developments to complete within the Temple district of the city. CEG is currently managing the transformation of Drapers Yard, on Marshall Street, for Labcorp’s life science centre of excellence. The new headquarter facility will boast a new façade, roof top amenity space with a green, sedum roof and new landscaping and planting. CEG, alongside Leeds City Council and other stakeholders, is bringing forward further development across the Temple district, with the potential to provide some 4 million sq ft of high quality accommodation with Temple Works at its heart as a cultural centrepiece. Nick Lee, director at CEG, said: “Globe Point will deliver much needed new workspace within Leeds City Centre. The quality of the building and the approach to people and sustainability led design will set the tone for future developments within Temple. We are really excited about the buzz in Temple and the number of people living and working in the area continues to grow, supporting the fantastic bars, restaurants and other amenities, including our events space partnership with Chow Down.” Fox Lloyd Jones and Knight Frank are marketing the building on behalf of CEG. Nick Salkeld from Fox Lloyd Jones said: “We are beyond excited to have this ground-breaking scheme ready to show occupiers and the delivery work to date has already surpassed our expectations as to what a new generation workspace looks and feels like. Throughout the design process we really majored on the detail around the flexibility and quality of the space, making the most of its unique dual aspect with amazing natural light around the entire floorplate. The finished product will raise the bar as to what constitutes the best new office space in the city in a highly sustainable building and at the heart of an area steeped in history and character.” Eamon Fox, partner and head of office agency at global property consultancy Knight Frank in Leeds, said: “We are on course to deliver next generation workspace, combining great design, strong ESG credentials and new technology. NewcastleGateshead Quays enabling works begin

Hoardings have been erected and enabling works begun on the NewcastleGateshead Quays arena, conference and exhibition centre scheme. Developer Ask:PATRIZIA has instructed contractor BAM Construction to work on the initial preparation works to the site between the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the Sage Gateshead and Gateshead College on Hawks Road. Gateshead Council has led the development of the site which involves some £300m of regeneration investment. The enabling works package is a significant step forward for developing the arena and conference centre scheme which is expected to create some 2,000 new jobs (during construction and to operate the complex on completion) and provide around a £70 million annual boost to the local economy. BAM is working with several key partners, suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure a smooth start to the work and to minimise disruption to roads and footpaths around the development site. Appropriate traffic management measures will be in place to keep all road users and pedestrians safe. Full construction work will begin next year under a separate contract. NewcastleGateshead Quays will feature a world class arena, purpose-built conference and exhibition centre, restaurants, a dual-branded hotel and large areas of outdoor realm and performance space. It is anticipated the site will attract over 1million additional visitors each year and it is due to complete in 2024. The development will connect directly to Gateshead’s district energy network, including cycle provision across the site and capacity for electric vehicle charging points. BAM and Ask:PATRIZIA are examining a range of sustainability enhancements and a plan for significant social value measures. Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said: “We are delighted to see work beginning on what is a vital site for Gateshead and the wider region. We will work closely with our partners and local stakeholders to ensure the development progresses smoothly, and we deliver a project that creates good quality jobs and provides a huge boost to our economy.” John Phillips, Regional Director for BAM Construction North East, said: “Gateshead and the North East are very significant to us, because our people and our hearts are there and we know the local companies and suppliers so well. It’s a transformational scheme which everybody will benefit from and we have a wonderful opportunity to use our time here to enhance lives and give something back to Gateshead and its people. I’m very grateful that trust and confidence in BAM has allowed us to become involved at this stage. We continue to work hard on what is a large, complex scheme in tough market conditions.” BAM has premises and a long-term presence across the North East of England. It is presently at work on Home Group’s headquarters in Newcastle city centre. Accor, the leading hospitality group, is bringing its internationally renowned Novotel and Ibis Red hotel brands to the scheme and the 12,500 capacity arena, exhibition centre and conference space will be managed and operated by ASM Global. Speaking on behalf of the Ask:PATRIZIA partnership, John Hughes, managing director of Ask Real Estate, said: “Having worked with BAM on numerous previous schemes we know that they have the expertise and skills to deliver this world-class facility for us on behalf of Gateshead Council.” The North East Local Enterprise Partnership provided £5m from its Local Growth Fund to support designs and site investigations for the Newcastle Gateshead Quays scheme, and a further £7m from government’s Getting Building Fund to support the establishment of infrastructure locally, to create a new link road connecting Baltic Quarter with the A184 and Felling Bypass, and build a new multi-storey car park. Both the Local Growth Fund and Getting Building Fund are managed by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership. Read more about the development here: https://www.ngquays.com/

The circa £12.5 million works follow the creation of three other units by BAM that are now occupied by 3M Fat Face, VW, and DPD UK. The new facility is the largest of the plots to be developed so far.  The development of the business park began in 2016. The Portsmouth City Council-owned business park is expected to generate millions of pounds of rental income for the authority. Kevin Hudson, the council’s head of development, said: “This is the largest development of a dedicated manufacturing facility on the south coast this year.‘It’s also the biggest new warehouse facility to be built on the south coast since BAM built a global headquarters for international clothing brand Fat Face in 2017 – also at Dunsbury Park.” John Rixon, Commercial Manager for BAM’s South East team, said:“This is an interesting appointment for us because Portsmouth has used Procure Partnerships, and it is a direct appointment for us.“Our enabling works across the whole of the business park put us in an excellent position to compete for each unit, but we have to prove the quality and value of what we do each time. BAM signs solus supply deal with Polypipe

BAM Nuttall and BAM Construct UK have signed a solus agreement with Polypipe Group plc’s market-leading divisions Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation and Polypipe Building Products to supply drainage products to all BAM’s infrastructure and building projects in the UK. The move signals a closer relationship in procurement between BAM UK businesses, anticipated to be the first of several such arrangements. BAM believes carefully targeted deals will offer a competitive advantage for its clients, and benefits in quality and performance. “We are focused on meeting clients’ demands,” says Daniel Billinge, recently appointed as BAM Construct UK’s head of procurement. “This includes securing their key drivers like sustainability, faster programme delivery, and with modern methods of construction that demand more off-site manufacturing and standardisation. This step enhances all of those criteria.” The BAM solus agreement with Polypipe supports earlier and closer collaboration throughout the project life cycle. Economies of scale and a raft of benefits will reduce capital costs for Clients and add sustainable value. Using just one drainage supplier on a project means BAM can plug products into the design from day one. This component-led approach removes the need to alter drawings – or digital designs – further down the line. Reducing redesigns saves time and resolves clashes and interfaces before a project gets onto site. As all components are compatible, the system’s quality and performance are assured. “Ultimately this arrangement will not only take a lot of inefficiency out of the design, tender and construction stages, it will allow us to focus on what adds value for the customer on that particular project,” says James Lees, head of supply chain at BAM Nuttall. “Polypipe’s technical teams will be feeding into the design process which will help us look at a wider range of possible solutions, and take early decisions based on value not just capital cost”. For both Polypipe and BAM, working together collaboratively will establish a platform for innovation and continuous improvement particularly in areas such as carbon reduction and the wider use of recycled materials and SMART technologies.  It will also allow the development of bespoke net-gain solutions based on the unique Green Urbanisation approach which allows the integration of optimised green assets within urban and infrastructure schemes. Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation became an approved supplier to BAM Nuttall around nine months ago, and the two organisations have already been working closely on projects for Highways England. BAM Nuttall is part of the LinkConnex consortium with partners Aecom and Mace which will work on Regional Delivery Framework projects on the M54/ M6 and the A38 in the Midlands and on the A27 in the South East. BAM Nuttall is also working on the M27 upgrade, part of the Smart Motorway programme, in joint venture with Morgan Sindall. BAM Nuttall and Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation have been collaborating to create a library of BIM models for highway drainage. As well as streamlining the design and construction phases, this approach aims to bring efficiencies to the operation and maintenance of the roads. “This deal is exciting because we are moving from a transactional relationship to a collaborative one,” says James Haddon, account manager for Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation, who has worked closely with James Lees and Daniel Billinge to set up the solus supply deal. “We are really happy about the way that our relationship has progressed and that we have been able to include other parts of our two groups in our journey”.

Contractors Welcome Local ‘Hidden Gems’ to Join the Construction Supply Chain

Supported and third sector businesses operating throughout Scotland are being invited to meet up with some of the country’s biggest building contractors to explore the possibilities for joining the sector’s supply chain. The hub South West partnership is hosting its third annual Hidden Gems supplier showcase as part of its on-going commitment to an inclusive supply chain offering opportunities to local businesses and organisations throughout the area. This year’s event is being held in partnership with hub West, the development partnership established in April 2012 covering the west of Scotland. Featuring 10 organisations with the potential to sell their products and services into the sector, the supplier showcase will be held on Tuesday September 24 at The Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) in Glasgow’s Edgefauld Avenue. From its roots as a supported factory for the visually impaired, the RSBi has grown into one of the country’s leading examples of social enterprise, combining commercial success with socially responsible practices. It is committed to providing opportunities to people with disabilities, as well as helping towards the economic regeneration of the local community and beyond. Wholly owned by Glasgow City Council as part of its City Building limited liability partnership, RSBi is credited as the largest supported business in Europe. It manufactures a wide range of products including kitchens, office and educational furniture, beds and soft furnishings, timber building kits, metal products and storage solutions. “The RSBi is a fantastic example of a business from which the whole of society profits, and is therefore the perfect location for this year’s Hidden Gems event,” hub South West chief executive Michael McBrearty said. “There are many such organisations throughout Scotland providing much-needed employment and support for local people, and we want to showcase how they can benefit from contributing to the construction industry in general, and in particular to Scotland’s hub programme.” The hub South West partnership was established in 2012 to deliver value for money on public sector community-based infrastructure projects to generate growth in local economies across Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway. It is currently processing a general pipeline of £1.1bn of works. Hidden Gems forms part of the regular series of workshops organised by hub Club, the networking initiative of hub South West aimed at engaging local businesses and encouraging them to share their experiences. Events from hub Club are open to all members and aspiring members of hub South West’s Territory Supplier Network. Tier 1 contractors represented on the day at Hidden Gems will include Interserve, Kier, Morrisons, Graham, Morgan Sindall, BAM, CCG and Linear Design & Construct. Registration begins at 2pm and places can be booked here.

BAM Western Announced That They Have Selected Biosite to Carry Out Standardised Access Control

BAM Western has announced that they have selected Biosite to carry out standardised access control and workforce management. Bioforce has been awarded the contract following a comprehensive and competitive tender process. Biosite will be working to offer standardised access control solutions for BAM Western across their construction sites in the region. There was a rigorous selection process put in place by BAM in order to choose their partner. Bam Plant has already developed a stable partnership with Biosite and although a number of other companies were invited by BAM to demonstrate their access management systems, Biosite was chosen as the best to suit BAM’s needs. All of the companies that demonstrated their systems were scored by the decision makers at BAM Western for their service support, Software, hardware, reports, future development, ease of use, support, security and cost. Biosite will be delivering to BAM’s construction sites biometric site access, security and workforce management solutions for sites in the Western region of the country. Biosites already established relationship with BAM Plant was another supporting factor for choosing Biosite. BAM Western and Biosite are committed to improving the training of apprentices and those that were previously unemployed. With this shared ideal and the use of the access management systems that will be installed by Biosite, capture and analysis information will be available for operatives and site performances. This is a vital part of helping apprentices and trainees improve as well as monitoring who has access to the site and the record of how long is spent on site. By having easy access to this information, BAM Western will be able to set more and more ambitious targets for themselves in order to get more individuals trained. Hopefully this expansion of the partnership between BAM and Biosite will lead to more partnership work taking place in the future.

Finley Structures Secures Second University Building for BAM

County Durham based steel company Finley Structures has secured a contract to build a second university building for BAM Construction. The family run business, based on Aycliffe Business Park, has begun working on a 400 tonne project to build the Sarah Swift building at the University of Lincoln. The £19 million facility will be home to the schools of health and social care and psychology, along with a professional development centre. The facility will stand on the site of the 19th century Pea Warehouse which has been demolished to make way for the five storey building, which is due to be complete in May next year. The contract win comes following Finley Structures’ erection of 500 tonnes of steel for BAM Construction to help build the £16 million Isaac Newton building at the University of Lincoln. Jim Graham, Operations Manager at Finley Structures, has worked on a series of projects for BAM over the last few years and said that it is the shared values of the two companies that make it a ‘perfect fit.’ Graham commented: “They’re quite unique in that BAM isn’t following a UK model. It’s a Dutch model with a parent company from the Netherlands, where aggression is frowned upon. “They’re very open and they expect you to be the same, so we have matching values of honesty and fair play.” Last month, BAM won the £30 million contract to deliver the Engineering Innovation Centre in Preston. BAM’s Manchester office is due to start work in January 2017 and complete the work by the summer of 2018. The EIC will be situated in the heart of Preston city centre and will be an integrated hub for teaching, research and knowledge exchange, bringing together expertise from the region from within industry and academia. It is hoped that the planned EIC will reclaim Lancashire’s role as a national centre for advanced manufacturing.
