Mitie Security has launched new fever-screening solutions, using thermal imaging to identify individuals potentially suffering from COVID-19 The solutions are designed to support both businesses on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic such as hospitals, and those preparing to return to business post lockdown, such as retailers, venues and buildings with a significant number of employees Mitie Security is helping businesses mitigate against the spread of Coronavirus with the launch of a new suite of fever-screening solutions. The solutions, which have been developed by adapting existing thermal imaging technology, quickly and easily identify individuals with a fever that may be symptomatic of COVID-19. This fever-screening technology is able to detect human temperatures to within an accuracy of 0.3ºC, raising the alarm to monitoring teams should it identify an individual with a fever. However, it is important to note that some people believe that this kind of fever monitoring tech can pose privacy risks depending on who has access to the data collected from these devices. However, these more focused programs are a far cry from dragnet surveillance cameras constantly surveilling the public like the mass surveillance in China. These solutions have been designed to support the wide range of industries on the frontline of the nation’s fight against coronavirus, as well as those looking to prepare for when current restrictions are eased. Applications for the technology include: Healthcare: Identifying potential COVID-19 sufferers as they enter hospital which will allow healthcare professionals to take precautions, such as limiting contact with other patients and ensuring all staff they encounter are wearing appropriate PPE. Public spaces: Scanning people’s body temperature on entry to public spaces, such as railway stations, airports and large venues. This will allow individuals potentially suffering from COVID-19 to be isolated and reduce the further spread of the virus in crowded places. Retail: Thermal imaging technology will support the safety of staff and customers in supermarkets or other shops in identifying individuals with fevers and potentially diverting them away from the stores. Business Headquarters: For businesses preparing for the return of large number of employees to their Head Offices. These fever-screening solutions will detect any employees or visitors who are potentially infected with COVID-19, preventing it from spreading further within the office. To enable use in different situations, the technology has been developed in several formats from hand-held units to mounted cameras. For example, locating the thermal cameras at site entrances allows a larger number of people to be checked at one time, such as in public areas or when a large number of employees are entering a building at the same time, for instance, during shift changes at manufacturing site, or employees arriving for work at a large office block. The portable hand-held solution meanwhile can be used to check individuals, enabling the detection of anyone showing an elevated body temperature. Mitie’s specialist Fire and Security Systems’ Team has also developed a process guide to be used alongside the fever-screening solutions, including best practice guidelines and procedures to manage individuals with a high body temperature, depending on the scenario. For instance, potential COVID-19 sufferers could be diverted to a safe area for further checks to be performed by an employee wearing appropriate PPE, before determining if access to the site will be granted or denied. The fever-screening solutions, alongside these guidelines, will allow businesses to protect their employees and customers, by minimising the risk of spreading COVID-19 infections. Mitie Delivers Further Profit Warning, Leaves Care Business

Facilities management group Mitie has delivered a further profit warning and has moved away from the care business. Along with reporting a slide into losses in the first half and cutting its dividend, Mitie said that the second half of the year should see an improvement. However, the full year turnout is still expected to fall short of expectations. The FTSE 250 listed firm has made the call to exit the domiciliary healthcare market, placed the company under strategic review and written off all healthcare goodwill and intangibles, as the division reels from downward pressure on rates and a reduction in care volumes. The firm had warned two months ago that performance in the six months up to September 30 was being hit by changing market conditions, with firms throughout the UK adjusting to economic uncertainty and increasing labour costs by making short term reductions in higher margin project work and discretionary spending. Although revenue went down by just 2.6% to £1.09 billion, the change in mix and lower discretionary spend saw margins squeezed and operating profits fell by 39% to £35.4 million, while the write-offs in healthcare saw Mitie plunge into a £100.4 million pre-tax loss compared to a £45 million profit a year ago. This reflected £128.1 million of charges, including impairments and writing off of healthcare goodwill and acquisition-related intangible of £117.2 million and restructuring costs of £6 million. Chief Executive Ruby McGregor-Smith, who will step down next month after 10 years at the helm, commented: “The first half of this year has been difficult but we are not alone in facing significant macroeconomic challenges. “The steps we have taken to counter these impacts include the restructuring of both frontline and support functions across FM and the decision to withdraw from the domiciliary care market.” As the previous year’s earnings per share revered into a 29.5p loss, the interim dividend was cut to 4p from 5.4p last year.

Mitie Secures £15m Greater Manchester Police Custody Contract

Mitie has won a £15 million contract awarded by Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd and the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership to provide healthcare and liaison services in custody suites. The contract has been secured by Mitie’s Care & Custody Health business, which provides forensic medical and sexual assault referral centre (SARC) examination services to a number of police forces throughout the UK. The three-year deal, with an option to extend for another two one-year periods, will see Mitie coordinate an “integrated health, liaison and diversion partnership” with organisations including five Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Cheshire and Greater Manchester Community Rehabilitation Company, and North and East London Strategic Commissioning Support Unit. The partnership will ensure that the health of people of all ages who commit, or are suspected of a crime will be assessed while they are in custody. Those with mental health issues, learning disabilities, substance misuse or other vulnerabilities will be supported to access appropriate services. The service is also set to operate in courts. Mayor and police and crime commissioner Tony Lloyd, commented: “If we are to effectively reduce reoffending and protect the vulnerable we need to think innovatively about how we commission services. People who find themselves in a police cell often have underlying health issues that may cause them to offend, such as mental ill health or substance abuse, so it’s common sense to bring police and health together.” Mitie says this is the first time that UK police and health organisations are working together to provide an integrated healthcare and liaison and diversion service in custody suites, at court and in the community.

Manchester Airports Group Signs Major New Contract with Mitie

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has signed a new multi million pound deal with facilities management (FM) firm Mitie. Building on their existing seven year relationship, the new five year contract will see Mitie consolidate its FM services across three airports into one integrated contract. The firm has provided FM services such as cleaning, waste management, gritting and snow clearance at Manchester Airport since 2008. The new contract, estimated to be worth £60 million over its duration, will see Bristol-headquartered Mitie expanding its services at Manchester Airport to include pest control and landscaping. In addition, the company will for the first time offer soft services at MAG’s Stansted and East Midlands airports, as well as hard services such as mechanical and electrical maintenance, fixed wire testing, life safety systems and plumbing. London Stansted Airport CEO, Andrew Cowan, a sponsor of the contract, commented: “We have been working with Mitie for over seven years and it is a great credit to their team that we are developing our long-standing relationship with this new contract. “Mitie was awarded the work after a rigorous and technical tender process.” He continued: “Mitie has extensive experience in the sector, and an ability to provide national 24/7 coverage underpinned by advanced technology.” Mitie MD Phil Holland said: “We are proud to be building upon our relationship with MAG through this new and consolidated contract. “Our long running relationship is a testament to our market leading airport experience and we are confident that our expansive technology-led service capability will assist MAG in providing a world-class experience for its passengers and airline partners.” Last month it was revealed that MAG contributes £6.2 billion to the economy, with the main drivers behind the expanded ‘economic footprint’ of the airports include a higher number of employment opportunities and the associated economic value generated by their operations.
