STEM Careers at the Forefront of New Partnership

A new partnership, STEM Accord, created to provide co-ordinated action to inspire more young people, and particularly girls, to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will be announced at the WISE annual conference. STEM Accord has been created by WISE, the ERA Foundation, STEM Learning, Design and Technology Association (DATA) and The Smallpeice Trust, working in alignment with the Royal Academy of Engineering, Engineering UK and the IET and guided by the recommendations of the Perkins Review. Helen Wollaston, Chief Executive of WISE, the campaign for better gender balance in STEM, says: “Despite hundreds of outreach programmes, most girls in this country still think that science, tech and engineering aren’t for them. We can’t allow this to continue. By joining forces, we will make sure that all girls and their families get the message that these subjects open doors to the jobs of the future” Dr Jo Kennedy, Board Member of the ERA Foundation, adds: “As far as we are aware this will be the first multi-organisation initiative to deliver STEM outreach to schools in line with the recommendations of the Perkins report, Engineering UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering. This collaboration is vital to provide more cohesive support to students, teachers and parents across the UK to ensure that as many young people as possible and particularly girls are inspired and understand the potential STEM careers that could be open to them.” STEM Accord aims to generate impact through combining effort and resources across the existing effective outreach programmes run by the founder member organisations. This approach is a key part of WISE’s 2019 action plan for creating future skills for the UK, taking a holistic approach to improving gender balance in STEM, from classroom to boardroom. Alongside the work as part of STEM Accord, WISE’s priorities for 2019 are: Ensuring that women have the opportunities to retrain or return to STEM careers at all stages of their careers. This includes a call to action for employers, Government and universities, to provide training for women to take up jobs in technology, to ensure that, as a priority, women are able to access life-long learning opportunities to retrain and reskill in STEM, including providing easy to access routes into work such as taster days, internship, returnships and training. Working together with business and industry, through WISE’s Ten Steps business programme, to help them show leadership by improving the representation of women in technical and management roles. WISE is calling on all organisations, from the classroom to the boardroom, to set a target for the percentage of girls and women in STEM to create sustainable change. Helen Wollaston explains: “Technology is transforming our lives and yet more than 80% of those working in technology are men. We need to address this now to ensure that women have opportunities for the best paid jobs, businesses can fill the technical roles they need, and women can play their full part in shaping our future world.” Helen concludes: “We know that industry, education and Government have a shared objective here; to encourage more girls into STEM and provide opportunities for them throughout their careers. It makes sense for us to work together to create sustainable change. We must take ownership, because we all have a contribution to make to ensure that the UK has the necessary STEM skills for the future. By working together, we can create a greater impact than we can separately.  We’ll have broader insight, more ideas and better initiatives.”

New Partnership Will Bring Homes to Bexley

The new partnership between Wates Residential and Orbit will bring a further 42 new homes to the London Borough of Bexley. Already creating more than 700 homes in Bexley, the partnership will further contribute to the redevelopments of a site on West Street in Erith. “We are delighted to be able to continue our award-winning work with Orbit, which has already led to more than 700 new homes in Bexley either being built or in the pipeline. We look forward to getting started on the West Street project, which will not only deliver more crucial housing for the area but will also lead to increased employment and training opportunities for local residents,” said Paul Nicholls, Managing Director of Wates Residential. The £9.4 million scheme will see vacant buildings including a former car parts warehouse replaced with a contemporary low-rise design including seven homes for London Affordable Rent, 14 homes for London Living Rent and 21 homes for Shared Ownership sale. The plans also include a car park with electric charging points and large community garden. The development of the site forms part of Orbit’s long-term strategy for delivering high quality new homes in Erith and the wider region, and will contribute towards improvements to the quality of the streetscape and the overall appearance of the local area. “We are pleased to once again be partnering with Wates to deliver much needed affordable housing to local people in Bexley. New Partnership to Provide Tenancy Deposit Alternative

Tenant Shop, an Inchora company is delighted to announce that it has entered into a new partnership with Reposit in order to provide a security deposit alternative product within its portfolio for agents, landlords and tenants. Tenancy deposits have traditionally comprised six weeks rent and despite the cap in the Tenant Fee Bill bringing this to five weeks, a lump sum of this amount can be difficult for some renters to find. Reposit’s security deposit alternative provides a new way to rent property, with tenants only required to pay a single week’s rent as a service fee to add their landlord to a group insurance policy. The policy covers a landlord for everything that the traditional lump sum would have covered at less cost to the tenant. This innovative product helps landlords fill their properties quickly and securely and gives tenants a deposit alternative. The product crucially includes eight weeks rent as cover (three weeks more cover than cash deposits can legally offer due to capping at five weeks rent)  as well as Reposit dealing with all collections of owed money from the tenant via their platform. Tenant Shop prides itself in offering the highest industry standard of products and services to its customers and this is where Reposit’s product excels. Unlike other security deposit alternatives, this product sees a tenant paying a service fee and Reposit then adding their landlord to a group insurance policy as a named beneficiary. As a result only the tenant’s landlord can cancel the policy. This means that the policy is not in the name of someone who cannot claim or be a beneficiary. This ensures maximum regulatory compliance and a far better customer outcome for both landlord and tenant. Reposit’s scheme has significant check-out / claims data to prove that the product works end to end with independent arbitration in the case of a dispute. Underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s, regulated by the FCA and covered by the FSCS, Reposit proves itself as the strongest product on the market. Tenant Shop has been partnering agents for over ten years providing its dedicated technology platform SULU to help them manage tenancies and reduce workload. It provides agent, landlord and tenant services through notifications, dedicated account management, a unique void solution and utility, media and insurance services (including rent protection). Reposit will be added to the portfolio in April and will be provided in two ways. Letting agents and their landlords will be able to use Reposit via direct introduction from Tenant Shop or coupled with referencing via their preferred referencing partner, UKtenantdata.

Dulux Starts New Partnership with Fearne Cotton

Dulux has launched a new partnership as part of its Colour of the Year 2019 initiative. The joint venture with author and broadcaster, Fearne Cotton, is designed to help homeowners embrace colour in their home. The collaboration with the TV personality will also help professional decorators communicate the best use of colour to their customers and encourage homeowners to embrace new, ‘on trend’ shades in their homes. The videos produced with Fearne talk about how to create stylish interiors and will act as a tool for professional painters and decorators to demonstrate how and why the Dulux Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey™️ and the supporting ColourFutures™️ 2019 palettes work so well in the home. “I’m fascinated by the science of colour and the power it has over mood and behaviour. Changing your home – your most personal space – has the power to create positive change in all areas of your life, from creating a space to think to empowering us to act. Spiced Honey™️ is about fostering a sense of positivity with the outside world again. It’s about letting the light in,” commented Fearne. 2019 marks the 16th year of the global ColourFutures™ annual trend forecast from Dulux Trade. An expert panel of colour designers, design specialists, trend forecasters, architects and editors from around the world joined together to capture a universal theme, resulting in a colour that suitably embodies our mood of the moment for the year ahead – leading to Spiced Honey™️ to represent 2019. “Supporting professional decorators is a key priority and we know that their customers are often seeking reassurance before they commit to a new colour in the home,” said Karen Wilkinson, Dulux Trade Marketing Lead. “Fearne Cotton is someone that the homeowner audience can really relate to and we hope that by partnering with her and producing assets for everyone to see and use, we’re making the job that little bit easier for painters and decorators, who pride themselves on giving every customer a brilliant finish.” “It’s not an easy job to convince proud homeowners to trust you to redecorate their most personal spaces, so anything we can do to help our professional decorators to do this is worthwhile. Helping our trades professionals communicate the added benefits of colour in the home will help them build their businesses and stand out from the competition,” Karen added.

Reposit Announces Built to Rent Partnership Agreement

Reposit, the company changing the way landlords, agents and tenants handle deposits, has announced its latest partnership with property management company Way of Life, providing all customers with an alternative to the tenancy deposit schemes. The InsurTech firm operating in the PropTech space, has also unveiled an extension of its cover from six to eight weeks, covering all bases from rent arrears to cleaning and damages costs. Founded in 2015, Reposit is the creator of the growing deposit replacement sector in residential lettings, providing customers with an alternative to the standard tenancy deposit. Reposit eases cash flow problems for renters by enabling them to secure a property with just one week’s rent. Way of Life is a property management company currently managing over 550 homes in the UK, with another 300 launching this summer. Its customers enjoy a tailored service from point of enquiry, throughout their stay and until they move on to the next stage of their life. Way of Life customers are given the choice of purchasing a Reposit with just one week’s rent, plus an annual fee of £30 should they stay for more than one year in their home. Way of Life becomes a named beneficiary on the Reposit insurance policy and is protected for up to eight weeks’ rent, for anything a traditional tenancy deposit would have covered. “We want to offer an excellent level of service to our customers. Finding an alternative deposit option was always high on our agenda. After looking at the various deposit replacement offerings, we have chosen to partner up with Reposit to offer a viable option to our customers. It’s ease of integration into our services and the dedication towards compliance under FCA regulation and FSCS protection made the choice easy in the end,” said Way of Life’s Managing Director, Sowgol Zarinchang. Way of Life’s partnership with Reposit comes just before the opening of its new £37 million development in Birmingham, The Lansdowne, which comprises 206 apartments and more than 10,000 sq. ft of shared social spaces including a lounge with big-screen entertainment facilities, a quiet room, a broadband-equipped workspace, a fitness studio and a rentable private party room and kitchen. All customers are invited to choose a Reposit or traditional deposit when signing up. Reposit is also today announcing that it has increased its length of cover to eight weeks, the longest complete cover in the industry. A number unmatched by traditional deposits as government legislation for rent under £50,000 per year is capped at five weeks and six weeks for rent over £50,000. According to recent figures published by the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, the average rental deposit in England and Wales is £1,041, whilst in London, it is typically £1,750. Reposit’s market research data of 1,000 tenants, found that 91 percent of tenants have paid a deposit, with 49 percent claiming they borrowed from family, loans or even payday loans. For people moving between properties, they are expected to provide the deposit for the new contract before an old deposit has been released, causing further cash flow problems and added stress.

Unite and Manchester City Council Announce Partnership

Manchester City Council joined UK construction union Unite’s Construction Charter and now they have announced a new partnership. Both institutions will work together to stand up for the city’s construction workers and outlaw poor construction practices on building projects under its control. “By signing up to Unite’s Construction Charter, Manchester City Council is making a serious commitment to securing the best employment standards for construction workers. The Charter will protect workers from poor industry practices which result in the loss of employment rights, it stops blacklisting and means workers can raise health and safety issues without fear,” said Unite’s regional coordinating officer for construction, Andy Fisher. “It’s fantastic news that one of the UK’s major cities has pledged to lead the way and demand the highest standards in construction. It means that projects across the city including the ongoing work at Manchester Airport will need to meet the highest employment standards. Unite representatives at Manchester City Council deserve a special thanks for the work they did to help get the Charter up and running,” Andy Fisher added. Manchester City Council is the latest local authority to sign up to Unite’s Construction Charter, which ensures building contractors and sub-contractors under the control of the local authority provide good jobs, good apprentice training, excellent health and safety and that they ensure workers are paid the going rate for the industry. “Manchester City Council has ambitious plans for the city and we are delighted to work with Unite to ensure that our construction projects meet the highest standards for workers and for residents. The council has a number of important development projects in progress including the renovation of Manchester Town Hall and the Factory project. BCIA Training Partners Announced

Two businesses have been named to work with the BCIA in a bid to support the delivery of its highly-regarded training courses to a broader, far-reaching audience. The companies, British Gas and Sontay, are both members of the BCIA and have been officially appointed as training partner organisations – then becoming the only businesses other than the BCIA to be able to provide much-sought-after Building Controls courses, from BC0 to BC6. With a growing demand for the courses in the wider industry, the move is a direct response to member feedback where a need for supporting the continued delivery of the courses on a larger scale has been highlighted. Of course, the nature of the courses is not to change whatsoever, and the BCIA will maintain its position in issuing any and all certificates for the completion of the courses, but the move will see an increased infrastructure for the delivery of the training at more locations around the UK. As a company with a noted invested interest into training, Sontay, one of the two businesses, nods at the first-class training programme available at its academy, established in 2014, which offers a varied range of courses for the continued professional development of people and businesses. The integration of BCIA courses will see a step forward in the level of training offered by Sontay, whose Managing Director, Sandy Damm, stated: “Partnering with the BCIA is proof of our commitment to training and we are looking forward to a bright working relationship.” Additionally, British Gas has also expressed its excitement to be working with the BCIA on training and, already providing building control management systems, has a keen, invested interest in the industry’s standards, benchmarks and processes. As such, British Gas’ Head of Training Services, Lynsey Partlow nodded to the company’s wider commitment to raising these standards and added: “These new courses allow us both to enhance the training of our own engineers and provide additional support to thousands of others we train each year.”

Dulux Trade Contract Partnership: Quality Service & Sustainability

Within the painting and commercial decorating industry, there is a complex concoction of issues, both with regard to the industry’s image and the difficulties that those who maintain or construct buildings face in finding reputable, quality painting contractors for their projects. This is where the Dulux Trade Contract Partnership Scheme comes in; a scheme that is not solely looking to champion the best commercial decorators, but looking to reshape the very image of the wider sector itself. Historically regarded as a skilled trade, commercial decorating is an integral part of any project development, both for new build and refurbishment. It offers the opportunity to entirely transform the interior of a building into an environment that enhances people’s lives. In recent years however, the sheer potential of this role has unfortunately been overlooked, as a result of the global recession, with cost-cutting prioritising over quality workmanship for the majority of projects. On this note, the Contract Partnership scheme is working hard to change this image and is targeting three core concepts capable of realigning the position of commercial decorating within the construction industry itself: the availability of quality workmanship, the inspiration of trust and reliance in commercial decorators playing a key role in construction projects, and the provision of a clear line of support offered to commercial decorators who are committed to elevating the reputation of the industry. Now boasting a network of some 250 approved decorators, the Contract Partnership scheme exists out of a combined need for Dulux Trade to champion the best of the best in the wider industry and drive forward the efficient use of high quality products. As such, the network is considered to be quite exclusive, with strict assessment procedures and requirements for commercial decorators to enter the scheme. While this may be quite a daunting concept for tradesmen, this exclusivity means that only quality approved contractors are able to enter the scheme and provides reassurance to the client that they are working with the highest quality tradesmen in the UK. The assessment and application process and auditing may be thorough but it gives contractors who get through the scheme an advantage, giving them a real USP with clients. Illustrating the driving ambition behind the Contract Partnership scheme as a way of highlighting excellence within the industry, Duncan Lochhead, Commercial Marketing Manager, explains: “We want to be championing the very best contractors who are working to drive continual improvements in the industry. Our aim is to encourage customers not to settle for poor workmanship, but to insist on quality commercial decorators. We can then, hopefully improve the focus on quality for all those operating in the market including those already in the partnership. This improvement is rewarded with incentives for members.” With its technical specification team consistently out in the field, providing support services for many of the UK’s leading asset managers and contractors, the Contract Partnership scheme is at the sharp end of the industry with a direct feed into the market and is therefore well placed to reflect the needs and wants of the modern-day building owner and contractor. The field resource significantly helps Dulux Trade understand the capabilities and professionalism displayed by commercial decorators across all projects. By not only recommending commercial decorators, but also monitoring the progress of individual projects, the Contract Partnership scheme is increasingly taking a central role in the sourcing and management of commercial decorating contracts across a wide range of projects. As a concerned stakeholder in the commercial decorating sector, the Contract Partnership scheme is integral to the future prosperity of the decorating industry, driving standards up and value into the wider construction industry itself – a responsibility which the scheme takes very seriously. As Lochhead further suggests: “We have a keen sense of responsibility towards all projects that we’re involved with. We follow projects through to completion to be sure that decoration goes well. We get a feel, on an ongoing basis, of who is delivering quality in the marketplace and then invite them to go through the assessment process. Rarely does a contractor pass the audit first time without improvement recommendations, but we provide help and support so they can make those improvements and reach the standards required to pass the audit.” The Contract Partnership scheme also improves the accessibility of such contractors through its web portal, an enhanced search-based website where some procurement processes can be undertaken on the website itself. This, in effect, offers something of a one-stop-shop service and is the first step to inspire clients to use highly skilled contractors to realise their ambitions of bringing colour into their projects. The website is a simple, reliable procurement solution for building owners and asset managers. This simple and efficient method of procurement, combined with the expertise and reliability of decorators on the scheme, is also confirmation of the Contract Partnership’s aspiration to encourage trust within the industry. Through the partnership, it is hoped that leading specifiers will be able to rest easy, knowing that they can rely on Contract Partnership commercial decorators to not only support the client’s vision of a building, but to bring innovative creations to the table which can completely and utterly transform environments. Explaining the importance of this trust and the potential for transformation, Lochhead details: “Our commitment and strategic ambition is to not only promote quality in the marketplace but also to. In doing so, we give clients the confidence to create an amazing transformation rather than a bland recoat in magnolia. You can make a huge difference to the users of a building through their visual experience of it; you can improve learning outcomes for education, healing outcomes in hospitals, productivity in office environments and more. Having skilled commercial decorators as part of their team gives specifiers confidence that they can deliver an amazing transformation.”
