John Edmunds Appointed MD of Constructionline

Constructionline, the largest accreditation service within the sector, has appointed John Edmunds as its managing director to oversee general day-to-day operations and develop the organisation’s long-term growth plan. Constructionline, which provides both sourcing and procurement software as well as professional services covering the broad spectrum of capabilities across the construction sector, will be led by Edmunds whose ambitions begin with the launch of the company’s new buyer services and web-based digital platform. The experienced Edmunds, who boasts a decade and a half delivering transformative business development, new product ranges and tangible market growth within the technology sector, has notable expertise across a broad range of industries. Indeed, his specialism is not strictly based on long-running businesses needing a boost as Edmunds has successfully worked with start-ups and mid-market enterprises.  This has seen him achieve plenty of industry awards, the most recent being the “40 Under 40 Award” as an emerging leader in the global gaming sector. Constructionline’s new managing director, who has worked all over the world and across a variety of continents, joins from California’s FutureLogic Inc, where he held a number of senor executive positions. One of Edmunds’ most recent accomplishments was the transformation and sale by private equity group American Capital of FutureLogic. His new role brings with it a lot of excitement for Edmunds who noted he had joined the company at an intriguing point in its history. “Since Capita’s acquisition of Constructionline in January 2015, we have made significant  investments in development and people capital and will continue to do so,” he said. This will enable Constructionline to “become a better partner for all our clients” while helping “the industry work more effectively every day”.

Extended Deadline for this Year’s Trades Awards

The deadline for entries into the yearly Trades Awards, brought to you by Xcite Media, has been moved back from the 29th of February to the 7th of March as a result of a swarm of interest in the awards and associated registration to them. The change in deadline will allow for tradesmen and organisations to still confirm their registration for the awards where they will be able to showcase their achievements with the rewards that follow. This year’s awards, thus far, have received a landmark number of entries, which is the key reason behind the extension for more organisations to enter, recognising that it would be a shame for businesses to miss out. In total, it has actually been shown that the number of organisations registering for the awards this year, has in fact trebled since the original launch of the awards back in 2013. Nodding to the level of interest this year as an incredible achievement, Director at Xcite Media, Darren Ross commented: “This increased interest reflects the huge support that they have received from the north-east trades and construction industry across the past three years.” Maintaining hope that the extended deadline will encourage more people looking to showcase their skills to sign up to the awards, Darren Ross also stresses that this will also give interested parties the opportunity to also enter into additional categories. Also encouraging members of the public to assist in nominating tradesmen and apprentices who they feel are worthy of recognition, Darren Ross also looks to encourage people to share case study examples of excellence across the sector so that people and businesses can receive the recognition they deserve. With applications having no submission fee, the awards are open to businesses of all sizes and shapes, with a total of 15 categories for businesses to choose from – of these, up to 3 categories can be chosen. The winners of the awards will then be announced at the final event on the 10th of June this year.

Wembley Contract Success with Vital Energi

To follow from Vital Energi’s success in being awarded the contract for the North West Lands scheme, one of the key phases for the development at Wembley Park, it has been confirmed that the scheme will be receiving a low carbon energy solution to boot. To run between February of this year through to May of next, the initiative will see the company install a brand new energy centre fully equipped with a 854kWe CHP generator as well as 9 250kW boilers and an additional thermal store space of 12mᶟ. Positioned in the Block E basement, the aforementioned centre will be set to offer heating and hot water across 4 different developments for residential use, and will also incorporate thermally efficient district heating pipework as part of the company’s commitment to also supplying the network for distribution. Upon completion, the North West Village will incorporate around one thousand homes, in addition to amenities, food and dining venues and additional spaces for leisure and community usage. Vital Energi will be providing its solution as part of the overarching development for Quintain, under Wates Construction. And commenting on the wider project, Rob Callaghan, Regional Director for Vital Energi explained that the park will be equipped to, firstly provide a wonderful village for the London area, but will also provide further infrastructure and support from an energy generation and distribution perspective. He added: “The developers have a clear view for a low carbon, sustainable community and we are thrilled to be helping them achieve that goal.” As such, the development will showcase a modern approach to sustainable communities and how they can be developed in a way which is both of interest to the potential residents, but also facilitate further growth and prosperity in the area as well as a degree of independent sustenance.

A pair of Liebherr three-axle cranes will boost Emerson’s range and help it remain one of the UK’s leading mobile crane providers in the South. The company, formed in 1991, continues to achieve success thanks to its broad catalogue of products that genuinely add value to customer ambitions alongside proven efficiency, quality and safety. Its latest cranes are two Liebherr LTM 1060-3.1 all-terrain mobile cranes, the three-axle units benefiting from full specification which includes the safe-lifting control system VarioBase providing better overall management of the crane in spite of the specific set-up of the outriggers. With a maximum lifting capacity of 60 tonnes, the LTM 1060-3.1 is great when operated at close radius with its five-section boom extending to 48 metres. Its ability to travel on UK roads is supported by its capacity to remain within STGO regulations even when carrying over a dozen tonnes of counterweight. Moreover, install the double fly jib and the maximum lifting height is increased to 63 metres. The new cranes also benefit from Liebherr enhancements such as Kenwood radios and in-cab Bluetooth with external microphone. Emerson, which enjoys a strong relationship with Liebherr thanks to its attentive customer service and reliable product, gains from the crane-provider’s expertise across the earth-moving and material handling operation where it produces industry-leading mining and quarrying machinery, as well as ancillary equipment supporting its tower and mobile crane units.

Top 6 Packaging Tips

In today’s society, items big and small are finding themselves imported and exported round the world at an alarming rate of speed and efficiency. A lot of the time, consumers and businesses are left feeling angry due to the unintentional state a product arrives in. If the item is of a fragile nature, of course the common sense approach in this situation would be to wrap it appropriately, but it would surprise you the volume of people who just take the cheapest approach when sending away any item. This can all too often lead to disaster, but alas! Disaster and calamity can be averted if you take guidance on the following top six packaging tips. Recycling When packaging items, why not consider recycling boxes that have not been damaged? You should be careful with this tip however as many boxes and items of packaging will seem of a high quality, but exposure to certain weather conditions may have caused the material in them to break down, yet not visibly, over time. This includes only using ‘like new’ boxes. Immobilisation The best way to ensure security of fragile products is to ensure immobilisation. Making sure that certain products are unable to move within the packaging is making sure that nothing will break. The air spaces left in a box could be filled with packaging material to ensure items have no room to shake and break. Purchase in Bulk If you are going to be sending away more than one item, or if you yourself are a mass product producer, buying boxes and packaging in bulk will enable a more economically friendly solution. Correct Sizing This is an economically friendly tip as well because buying the right size of packaging will mean that you have less packaging material to purchase. Buying the correct size of packaging will also ensure a more secure form of packaging for your product. Stick to the Correct Dimensions When packaging, wrap the products you have in the appropriate fashion – you would not wrap a table like a lightbulb or vice versa. Only Purchase from Quality-Assured Firms Although you may instinctively be looking to save a bit of money when buying anything, purchasing cheaper and lower quality forms of packaging may result in tears if the packaging breaks downs. Searching Google for quality-assured firms will give you the best results, and also a range of reviews so you can find exactly what it is you are searching for. Although packaging is not at the forefront of anyone’s mind when dealing with industrial products, or any product for that matter of fact, it should be something every packager should consider to ensure high quality of their product and above all, security. Considerate Constructors To Get Competence Star Rating

Considerate constructors will get a star rating for their competence after a new system was launched by The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) to boost standards and reward best practice. Now, companies along with their contractors, clients and workforce will be better able to demonstrate CCS competencies including everything from the success of health and safety policies to green initiatives and engagement with the local community. The new star rating – based on a level from one to five – has been developed to better reflect how well a site is run. It will highlight how businesses are complementing their work through onsite appearance, respect for the local community, safety of those involved directly and indirectly, and how company’s are operating with more sustainable, environmentally friendly business practices. Edward Hardy, CCS’ chief executive, says the new five-star system provides a clearer indication of competency and is an easier, more “quantifiable way” for the industry, the public and the local community to understand how construction businesses are performing to the CCS’ rigorous standards. Star ratings will be clearly displayed at each site with posters and certificates issued. Companies need to register sites to be scored by a nominated “monitor” whose analysis will be translated from the traditional 50-point marking system into a star rating out of five. Hardy believes the new rating system from the CCS will help the construction industry develop a more positive image in communities while its consideration for the wider environment is rightly celebrated. The simple identification of a site’s competency for passers-by will also encourage companies to act more responsibly and drive internal practices to become more considerate constructors.
