Official opening of the new teaching block at South Nottinghamshire Academy

South Nottinghamshire Academy in Cropwell Road, Radcliffe on Trent, celebrated the official opening of its new teaching block named The Maple Building this month. Midlands-based main contractor G F Tomlinson lead on the construction and design the £2.6 million two-storey teaching block facility, which comprises new classrooms, a seminar room, independent study space, IT facilities, staff offices and welfare facilities. The building has been designed to provide enhanced learning areas for an additional 150 pupils. The opening ceremony was attended by Dan Philpotts, executive headteacher at South Nottinghamshire Academy, Andrew Burns, chief executive of Redhill Academy Trust. School staff, governors, G F Tomlinson colleagues, local dignitaries and other partner and community organisations were also in attendance. The scheme has been completed on behalf of South Nottinghamshire Academy, which was rated ‘Good’ in its most recent Ofsted report, and currently offers 600 places for children aged 11-16 plus sixth form students, with plans to accommodate the increasing need for school places in the area. Since 2016, following relocation into a brand-new school building, the academy has been an integral part of Redhill Academy Trust which has a proven track record of enhancing school improvement. South Nottinghamshire Academy has continued to invest in its facilities, to meet the educational needs of current and future students, including a 3G floodlit pitch. As part of efforts to boost the environmental credentials on the project, heat recovery units were installed which enabled 100% of all warm air in the building to be reused, increasing energy efficiency. Our site management team also created a “Zen Zone” which involved fencing off a dedicated area for growing vegetables with a small green house, raised bed and benches made from recycled site materials to support their mental health and wellbeing. During construction, G F Tomlinson partnered with the academy generating social value through the provision of site tours, a careers fair and a mock interview day to enhance students’ understanding and awareness of the careers in construction. Chris Flint, Managing Director of G F Tomlinson, said: “We’re pleased to see work has completed at South Nottinghamshire Academy. New digital construction platform launched to tackle modern slavery and worker checks

THE UK construction industry has for decades been plagued by issues such as modern slavery, data silos, lengthy onboarding, fake credentials and a lack of digital standards, according to the brains behind newly launched digital construction platform Construct.id. Construct.id is a new industry-wide platform that has launched to raise standards and provide betterment for all, serving the entire construction community with a single source of trusted and verified identity, skills and competency data. Skilled workers, subcontractors and main contractors all now have the opportunity to join the platform, which consists of two components. The first is a free app that enables skilled workers to digitally store and present their verified identity, work history and credentials to site managers across every project they work on. The second is a portal for contractors and subcontractors to set standards, get full visibility of the total supply chain and ensure workers have the right credentials. Two of the co-founders, Martin Ward and Dominic Howkins, have a combined 55 years of experience in technology and systems development for some of the largest UK construction organisations. They grew dissatisfied with the lack of industry-wide change, so set out to create an independent digital platform that would simplify processes, raise standards, benefit everyone in construction and unite the industry. Martin Ward, co-founder and managing director of Construct.id, said: “Thanks to widespread backing and input from the industry, we have been able to get the platform ready for market quickly. However, it was a chance meeting with Chris Hurley, our other co-founder, that led us to the real game-changing moment. Chris has been a digital identity pioneer within the aviation industry, working across the globe to introduce new digital identity services and often advising governments on meeting the most stringent security standards. Combining tried-and-tested aviation knowledge with our experience in construction is proving to be a powerful application of technology.” “In a nutshell, we have created a platform that can connect any credentials across the industry and place these with the worker. We then allow contractors to set credential standards needed to attend site and match the two. This massively improves transparency and removes lengthy onsite verification, as the credentials are verified at source.” Construct.id aims to use its platform and partnerships to support the industry in reducing modern slavery by providing free right to work checks for its members. It also hopes to address the skills shortage and plug gaps in mental health support in construction by reducing paperwork that can be a cause of workplace stress. Martin continued: “We have the ability to establish workers identity and provide free right to work checks to government standards. This information is provided to organisations and their supply chains, ensuring everyone working on site is who they say they are, and has the right skills and legal requirements. “Because of this level of transparency, this tool can be used to fight labour abuse and modern slavery across the entire supply chain. We have to work collaboratively to address betterment at every level, and this is where Construct.id can support.” Several high profile and leading organisations, such as national contractor Willmott Dixon, have already signed up as ambassadors, mandating the digital platform across their supply chain. Construct.id is now calling on the wider supply chain, including awarding bodies and trade associations, to help unite a fragmented industry. Martin added: “Raising standards begins at the point of qualification, which is why we want to work with awarding bodies to transfer old fashioned paper certificates into free online credentials, which will support the entire supply chain straight away. Sunderland-based Brims Construction, working hand in hand with the former chairman of Tolent, John Wood, have come to the rescue of Tolent’s Teesside employees/operations, hoping to save 150 jobs after the building contractor went into administration on Monday 13th February. The move will see Tolent’s previous Teesside management team re-employed by Brims, along with staff, operatives and members of the supply chain, whose aim will be to ensure minimum disruption to clients, with some sites having already returned to work on Monday 20th February. Brims will not be taking on responsibility for reimbursing any of Tolent’s creditors. Brims, who were already forecasting a turnover of £38m this year to the end of March (excluding any additional Teesside revenue) and employs 90 site and office staff, was established 16 years ago by Ian Clift, Jason Wood and Richard Wood.  All were previously employed by Tolent, which was founded by John Wood – Jason and Richard’s father. Consequently, they know the Teesside staff and business operation particularly well. Despite the obstacles thrown in their way by Tolent’s current legal and financial situation, the Brims team have worked around the clock, visiting all the current projects and talking to the clients involved to reassure them that their projects will be in safe hands with Brims. Commenting on the ongoing business plan Brims director, Richard Wood, said that Brims had been looking to expand further south and open an office in Teesside but had not envisaged it happening this way:  He said: “Following the announcement on the 13th February that Tolent had gone into administration with the loss of 350 jobs, we took action immediately as it is a company very close to our hearts. My father set Tolent up, but Ian, Jason and I all trained and worked there, with John only retiring three years ago as chairman.  “Its unfortunate demise has provided an opportunity for the future expansion of Brims and at the same time, we are hopeful of providing secure employment for up to 150 employees moving forward. “The former Tolent sites will be re-badged as Brims Construction and our sole aim is to save jobs with the minimum of disruption to clients. We have spent the last few days talking to clients and reassuring them that their projects will proceed as normal, with the people they have previously been dealing with.  We are confident we can minimise any job losses by quickly stepping in this way.” Tolent’s Teesside office was working on a mix of commercial projects including a rolling programme of petro-chem maintenance works.  In total the value of the ongoing work is estimated to be around £15-£20 million. Mr Wood continued: “Several clients have already recognised our new proposal is simply to provide them with the same group skillset of people but with a stronger company behind them. We have already received new orders for work, which helps save the previous workforce, for which we are all extremely grateful. We are currently dealing with the administrator, in order to buy the Tolent Teesside office building at Thornaby and it is very much our intention to put firm roots down in Teesside.” Adding his thoughts, John Wood said:  “It gives me great pleasure to be able to offer my help with these proposals, especially with Brims being central to it.  It keeps the construction heritage alive under the Brims name and it will hopefully salvage some of the work that Tolent was previously involved with.  We are confident that we will save as many site and supply chain jobs as we can and I would encourage all existing management and site staff to feel encouraged at what we are doing.  “It is great news for the region.  We just want to save the jobs and get work back on track.” Tolent was founded in 1983 by John Wood.  By the time he retired in 2019, turnover was around £180m with a strong balance sheet and the firm was viewed as one of the region’s success stories. Green light for new homes in Crowborough

Final planning permission has been given to Dandara to build 103 new homes at its new Braeburn Fields development located in Crowborough, East Sussex, just seven miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells. The independent housebuilder will start work later this year on the properties in the hamlet of Steel Cross, in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Of the total number of homes being built on the 7.87-hectare site, 36 will be affordable and 67 private.   Located in a secluded countryside setting just over a mile from the centre of Crowborough, the first phase of Braeburn Fields will feature a selection of three, four and five bedroom homes, along with a children’s play park. The masterplan comprises an ambitious vision that will breathe new life into the heart of Farnborough, and includes new homes, a leisure and civic centre, a hotel, retail space, two mobility hubs, and over 1.93 hectares of green open space. Plans for the regeneration include up to 960 new energy-efficient homes, and a new leisure centre and civic hub, representing an integral part of the council’s plans to leave a positive health and well-being legacy for the community. The development will also feature a new library, community space and a two hundred bed hotel, new ground floor retail and commercial space creating active frontages, all designed to make Farnborough a vibrant, sustainable, and desirable place to live. Air source heat pumps will provide the new homes with hot water and heating, whilst green roofs, and photovoltaic panels will help reduce residents’ energy costs. Biodiversity throughout the development will be increased with new healthy verges, amenity grasslands, and new tree planting. Keepmoat welcomed members of South Tyneside Council to unveil the show homes and sales office at its River’s Edge development in South Shields – it follows news that planning permission for the next stage of this major £65m housing development has been granted.   The celebration, which took place on Wednesday 22nd February, was attended by Leader of South Tyneside Council, Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Housing and Community Safety, Councillor Jim Foreman, Head of Economic Growth, John Scott, and Lead Member for Economic Growth, Skills and Climate Change, Councillor Margaret Meling.  For the first time, prospective homebuyers in South Tyneside will now be able to step foot onto the site, take a tour of the newly designed terraced showhomes, as well as visit the sales office and find out more information about the development.   The four-bedroomed ‘Richmond’ and the three-bedroomed ‘Stratton’ house types are modern homes which include features that facilitate family life such as light and airy lounges, spacious bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms, and well-equipped kitchen diners, which can also be used as a social area for the family.  When complete, the riverside development will consist of 299 two, three, and four bedroom homes – 48 properties are currently being delivered in phase one of the scheme.   Located close to the Mill Dam area of South Shields, the new homes are within walking distance of the town centre facilities and transport interchange as well as having access to Sandhaven Beach and the panoramic views from Cleadon Hills. The development will be home to over 1,000 residents, providing a significant boost for local businesses in and around the local area.  South Tyneside Council has now approved planning permission for the remaining 251 dwellings in phases two and three, which will be a mixture of houses and apartments. A new riverside promenade will also be built to open this stretch to the public for the first time in over 100 years.  “We’re thrilled to be able to give home buyers a first glimpse of our exciting and ambitious River’s Edge development. They were joined by Rob Valentine, Birmingham director of property firm Bruntwood, and Paul Kitson, Birmingham City Council’s strategic director of place, prosperity and sustainability. The Knowledge Quarter is a fast-growing part of the city centre housing small, medium, and large technology businesses, universities, colleges, hotels, and two conference centres. It is also home to the main HS2’s Birmingham terminal. Commercial activity within the Quarter has led to it being identified as an area with the potential to grow into a nationally significant ‘innovation zone’. This will attract further global investment and encourage local businesses and new start-ups to thrive and expand. Crucially, it will support regeneration in some of the city’s most deprived wards. During the visit, held on 23 February, Professor Aleks Subic shared his plans with the Secretary of State to establish Aston University’s Digital Health Innovation Campus, which will bring together academic, technical, commercial and financial resources to boost digital health innovation and health tech, and contribute towards improving health equity and access in the region while creating new job opportunities in the city. “With this strategic development positioned in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter, we are taking a “triple helix” approach, involving a strategic partnership between Aston University, Bruntwood and Birmingham City Council – as well as with NHS and other digital tech businesses – working together effectively to deliver inclusive growth and innovation and attract investment. The appointment is part of a reorganisation of the Council’s senior team, with the authority also in the midst of recruiting a new Chief Executive, as well as seeking to appoint new Corporate Directors for Neighbourhoods and Housing, Finance and Resources and Children and Young People. The role will focus on driving Liverpool’s economic growth and delivering sustainable development across the city centre and communities, including overseeing major schemes such as Anfield Square, Kings Dock, Paddington Village, Festival Gardens and the Littlewoods site. Nuala Gallagher will lead a team of 300 staff and will be responsible for a budget of £86 million, helping to create jobs and opportunities that are accessible to all. She will also be responsible for overseeing planning, property and asset management, an investment strategy, as well as skills, adult learning and environmental and sustainability policies. An exceptional leader, Nuala has amassed more than two decades of experience in development and placemaking internationally and is also currently a board member of Limerick Twenty Thirty, a property development company. Her previous roles include Head of Regeneration for the London Borough of Newham, Director for Economy of Place at Bristol City Council and Director of City Centre Development at Belfast City Council. Nuala has also spent time working in New York, leading on sustainable urban development and teaching at Columbia University. She is a registered architect and a graduate of Columbia University with a Masters in Urban Design. She will work closely with the Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson, interim Chief Executive Theresa Grant and the Government Commissioners to continue the transformation of the City Development directorate.
