Syzygy and GLP complete work on G-Park Zevenaar, one of Europe’s largest renewable energy installations

Syzygy and GLP complete work on G-Park Zevenaar, one of Europe’s largest renewable energy installations

GLP, the leading global investment manager and business builder in logistics, digital infrastructure, renewable energy and related technologies, and Syzygy, Europe’s leading consultancy in renewable energy, energy storage and electric vehicle infrastructure projects, have completed work on G-Park Zevenaar. Syzygy has supported GLP for the past three years to establish the company’s pan-European solar PV strategy, as well as the tactics to make its portfolio more sustainable through embedded renewable energy generation. G-Park Zevenaar is a 133,000 SQM logistics complex and represents a major investment in renewable energy by GLP Europe. The site is one of four in the company’s PV programme. G-Park Zevenaar, located at the business park 7Poort, close to the German border near the Rhine River, is a hugely significant embedded solar PV project in the Netherlands. The business park houses a vast roof-mounted solar PV system with a total installed capacity of 16.2MWp. It covers an area the size of 21 football pitches and saving 4,629 tonnes of CO2 per year and an anticipated 78,227 tonnes of CO2 across a 25-year lifespan. The impressive development was installed by solar deployment leaders Ecorus BV and is set to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification. At nearly 11.5 hectares, G-Park Zevenaar is now the second largest solar PV installation on a logistics building in the Netherlands, and among the top 20 largest installations in Europe. The project was granted the SDE++ subsidy – a government-funded incentive to stimulate sustainable energy production and facilitate the wider energy transition. In addition, the energy generated will be exported to the grid and part of it will be diverted to the tenant for on-site consumption. This will improve revenue potential and deliver the benefit of Guarantee of Origin (GoOs) to both the landlord and occupiers. Stefano Fissolo, Senior Director for Renewables at GLP Europe, commented: “Through our collaborative partnership with Syzygy, GLP is set firmly on its path to achieve its net zero goals through the development of one of Europe’s largest PV installations. The economic benefits that customers will enjoy through the cost savings in energy reduction will be just one of many attractions this project will  offer to future occupiers. This is only the start of our ambitious European renewables programme; we’re excited to roll out further projects and utilise the latest technologies to maintain our industry-leading position in sustainability.” John Macdonald-Brown, CEO of Syzygy, commented: “It has been an incredible journey to get to this point with our friends at GLP. This started in March 2020 as we all went into lockdown with a deep dive research project to support the development of a pan-European renewable energy strategy for Natali Cooper and Nick Cook at GLP.  These projects do not happen overnight and we can only praise the extraordinary work our European research Director, Cecile Bousquet who has led this initiative since we started.  We are just the supporting cast.  We cannot thank GLP enough for their drive and commitment to actually ‘getting things done’ and showing real leadership in this space.  GLP has had their customers at the heart of this strategy throughout – it is impossible to deliver decarbonisation, at scale and in a commercially sustainable way, without genuine  collaboration with your customers.  GLP’s plans from here are impressive and there is much more coming down the line which is really exciting.  Zevenaar is the second Netherlands project to have been delivered, but its scale is quite extraordinary – the size of 20 football pitches, generating enough power to supply 3,000 homes or to drive over 4.5m emission—free miles in an electric vehicle!” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Retrofit skills gap threatens UK’s net-zero target

Retrofit skills gap threatens UK’s net-zero target

Retrofit recruitment must triple if UK is to reach net-zero by 2050, new data shows  Today Reed in Partnership has launched Reed Environment to address the UK’s net-zero skills shortage. It will create a newly trained green workforce to help the UK meet its net-zero targets and spread economic opportunity across the country.  Reed Environment’s ambition is to create one of the largest networks of green skills training providers in the UK. It will begin by delivering retrofitting training at scale and creating a recruitment pipeline for retrofit. It estimates that this new workforce could reduce the carbon footprint of millions of UK homes, which are responsible for around 20% of the country’s carbon emissions.  Reed Environment has today shared new research which lays bare the urgent need to turbocharge retrofit training and recruitment in the UK. Its modelling estimates that current rates of retrofit recruitment must triple if the country is to meet its 2050 net-zero target. If these rates don’t increase, then the UK won’t achieve its target number of energy efficient installations to meet its net-zero goal until 2105 – a further 55 years beyond 2050*.   James Reed CBE, Chairman of Reed in Partnership, said: “The UK is in a race to reach net-zero by 2050. Meeting this target quickly is not only key to protecting the environment, but it is also a huge economic opportunity to create highly skilled jobs. A lack of skilled workers means we are currently falling behind.  “Nowhere is the UK’s green skills gap more apparent than in the retrofitting of our ageing housing stock. Currently, there is a serious shortage of retrofit training and recruitment pathways, meaning we are unable to embark on the retrofitting revolution that needs to happen. We need urgent action if we are to meet our net-zero targets and that’s why we’re launching Reed Environment to help address this problem.”  Reed Environment has invested in the Oxford Energy Academy, the highly-rated OFSTED training provider, to initially offer training for two retrofit assessment courses – the Domestic Energy Assessor and Retrofit Assessor – both of which form the foundation for undertaking a retrofit project.   Reed Environment will add over 1000 new retrofitters to the market each year when at full capacity – a 94% increase on current yearly recruitment levels**. It will connect the newly trained workers to job opportunities with Local Authorities, Housing Associations, and private landlords.  Reed Environment will combine its experience in delivering training programmes quickly at scale, with the Oxford Energy Academy’s technical expertise and track record of offering courses covering a broad spectrum of the energy industry.   Between now and 2025, Reed Environment will expand its reach by opening new Energy Academies across the UK to broaden the net-zero skills training it offers, including new retrofit courses, as well as solar, Electric Vehicles and heat pump training.   These Academies will provide first of its kind training at scale, job opportunities, energy advice and consultancy solutions to propel the UK along its trajectory to net-zero. These will be created in areas that are most in need of net-zero skills training to ensure access is spread equally.   Reed in Partnership is part of Reed Group, the largest family-owned recruitment company in the world.  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Sussex village increases affordable housing by 9%

Sussex village increases affordable housing by 9%

The completion of 15 brand new affordable rural homes was officially marked by the community of Icklesham in East Sussex on Friday 14 July 2023. Prior to the houses being built, there were a total of 167 affordable homes in the area of Icklesham. The 15 new homes represent a 9% increase in social housing provision, making a significant difference to the lives of local people in the Parish. The land, which was originally owned by local residents Eric and Wendy Hysted, was purchased by Icklesham Parish Community Land Trust (IPCLT) and then leased to Hastoe Housing Association to develop and manage the homes on their behalf. Fifteen homes have been developed at Orchard Close on the former agricultural land: 12 for social rent and 3 for shared ownership. All homes have been prioritised for people with a local connection to the Civil Parish of Icklesham, such as those working in the village, those with close family in the area, or those who have previously lived there but have been forced to move out because of a lack of affordable housing. Works began on site in June 2021 and were completed in August 2022 with all homes built to a high standard of energy efficiency. Before construction started, an archaeological survey was carried out and small pieces of broken Roman pottery were found along with the remains of a Roman Cremation Vessel. There was also an unusual find with evidence of a cremation burial inside a square-ditched enclosure – possibly that of a child. It is not known if the excavated deposits were self-contained or are part of a larger settled area. The Icklesham Parish Community Land Trust played a pivotal role in the development of the site working in partnership with Icklesham Parish Council, Sussex Community Housing Hub, Rother District Council, Hastoe Housing Association, ECE Architecture, Westridge Construction Limited and employer’s agent McCreith Construction Consultants. Hastoe invested £2,130,260 into the development, with a further £1,068,000 from Homes England and a grant of £297,000 from Rother District Council. All partners, as well as local councillors, attended the official completion of works including residents who had moved in this year. The occasion was commemorated with the cutting of a ribbon. Speaking at the event, Geoff Foot, Chairman of Icklesham Parish Community Land Trust, said: “For many years Icklesham Parish Council has been concerned at the dearth of local affordable housing due to rising local house prices and the lack of affordable housing options. Younger families were having to leave the villages, or were having to live in unsuitable accommodation. We received over 500 bids for the houses and a number of deserving applicants had to be turned down. Certainly for me it brought home the scale of the problem with the lack of local affordable housing, both here and across the district.” Local land owner, Eric Hysted, said: “Wendy and I are very pleased to have been able to play a part in bringing this project to life. Having brought up two daughters in the village ourselves, who eventually needed homes of their own, we could really see the benefit of supporting a very locally-focused housing scheme. It would provide young families in particular with the opportunity to live locally and, over time, the younger element would greatly benefit our village attending the village school and supporting local clubs, pubs, etc.” Cllr Ruairí McCourt, Cabinet Member for Housing at Rother District Council, said: “I was delighted to attend the event to mark the completion of this scheme at Icklesham, and I would like to thank all the partners involved for their work on this fantastic project. We are really keen to see more social and affordable housing across the district which will help tackle homelessness and insecure housing. Decent, secure housing – like these wonderful homes at Icklesham – not only boosts the health and wellbeing of their residents, but they also help to create sustainable communities for local people well into the future.” Hastoe Board Member, Robert Rutledge, said: “On behalf of Hastoe, I would like to congratulate everyone on the completion of these fantastic homes. I know that 15 homes doesn’t sound like a lot, but they represent a 9% increase in social housing provision in the Parish and they have certainly make a huge difference to the lives of the people who live in them. What’s more, homes built by CLTs cannot be sold off, so these homes will be kept for the benefit of the community in perpetuity.” A spokesperson for Homes England said: “Despite the current challenges affecting the country, accelerating housebuilding remains our number one priority. We are committed to supporting Hastoe Housing Association that has ambitions to build new homes, and our investment through an affordable housing grant allows us to do that. We’re delighted that our funding has enabled Hastoe Housing Association to deliver much needed new homes in the Civil Parish of Icklesham.” Orchard Close tenant, Libby Gibbons, said: “Where I lived before there were 7 of us in a small 3-bedroom house and we were living on top of each other. Then me and my partner moved here and our son was born a few weeks later. It’s made a massive difference to our lives, having our own home, having lots of space and a garden. I love it.” Orchard Close tenant, Rowland Gardner, said: “I’ve lived in Icklesham previously for around 20 years. Sheila and me lived in a park home prior to our move here. We’re delighted with our new home.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Karen also brings rich experience as a leader in the engineering space across multiple industries – most notably the rail industry heading up Hitachi Rail’s UK division. In her new role as chair of the HHIC, she brings strong focus on business improvement and accelerating growth, is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion and has extensive experience in manufacturing, supply chain and customer service. As the heating industry continues its progress decarbonisation and develop the skills required to achieve it, Karen’s leadership experience and expertise are set to drive forward the HHIC’s focus on advancing the heating industry to net zero. Karen Boswell OBE said: “I’m delighted and privileged to have been selected to Chair the HHIC Board. I want to thank Steve Keeton, our outgoing Chair, for his leadership during the incredibly difficult lockdown period we’ve all endured, and for his work despite the challenge of the pandemic, with business transformation, innovation and helping shape Government policy. “Our industry is at the forefront of enabling solutions for decarbonising heat and hot water in UK homes and businesses. The next three years are going to be incredibly important and exciting as we help move customers towards their carbon reduction targets and ambitions. “Our members are best placed to provide expert advice to government and support the development of the right decarbonisation policy that benefits everyone. “One of my clear focus areas will be on growing our skills base to deliver this critical, transformational role. We must attract, train and reward new talent from all walks of life, reflecting the customers and communities we serve. The decarbonisation agenda is a great career opportunity and we need to work better at demonstrating how attractive this sector is; delivering clean heat and hot water in homes and buildings is a fundamental component of our national ambition for net zero.” Stewart Clements, Director of the HHIC, said: “We are pleased to announce Karen’s appointment as chair following a commendable tenure from the outgoing Chair Steve Keeton. Our industry is at a pivotal and exciting point. New technologies like heat pumps and hydrogen further down the line mean there is exciting opportunity for jobs and making a difference in the UK’s decarbonisation journey. “However, our research has found that there is a large skills gap that we must fill if we are to make any progress. Encouraging more people into the industry with a focus on improving diversity, equity and inclusion is a next crucial step to attracting more people into this exciting sector at a time of great progress and innovation.” For more information about the HHIC and to see its latest research reports, click here. Meeting the challenge of increased demand for sustainable cleaning products

Meeting the challenge of increased demand for sustainable cleaning products

By Nick Winstone, Co-Founder & MD of Biovate Hygienics Sustainable cleaning plays a major role  in supporting a company’s overall sustainability goals. It creates a good brand image for your company, slashes energy costs, promotes green procurement as well as care for the planet and its people. According to a 2021 consumer intelligence survey report by PwC, 76 percent of consumers are likely to stop buying from a brand that doesn’t practice sustainability. From the same report 84 percent of employees prefer to work for a company that cares for the environment. (¹) One of the ways a facilities management team can boost sustainability efforts is to adopt a green cleaning strategy. Unfortunately, using traditional cleaning chemicals poses a health risk, whilst sustainable cleaning products will take greater care of your employees and the environment. The best way to clean green is to use a cleaning product that will biodegrade completely within a short time frame, within 28 days. The way the products are packaged is also really important to think about. For commercial cleaning products these should be as concentrated as possible. For example, a multi-purpose 1.5 litre pouch uses 90 percent less plastic than a jerry can and makes 275 spray bottles, massively reducing the carbon footprint and plastic waste generated. Recyclable components Fitting products with trigger heads that are made from 33% PCR plastic with no metal parts, and are fully recyclable, as some of our products are, also helps with sustainability. Their use stops 7.5 tonnes of virgin plastic from entering the supply chain, with CO2 emissions reduced by 13% and wastewater by 17%. Responsible sourcing of cardboard packaging also reduces our CO2 emissions by 25%. Another important factor to consider is the impact a product has on the user. Basically a green cleaning product should not be classified as an irritant to skin or corrosive  in its diluted state. Sustainability high on the agenda Sustainability is high up the agenda for businesses across most sectors, with environmental impact becoming a major driver in procurement decisions. This is sure to accelerate in a post pandemic world. In the liquid product cleaning industry, this is reflected in demand from customers and their distributors for chemical-free and plastic-free cleaning products. They are mindful of the fact most commercial cleaning products are in a ready-to-use format, increasing plastic waste and carbon footprints. Others contain traditional chemical actives which are unkind to the environment, while inhaling some chemical cleaning products is simply unhealthy, especially for cleaners using the products all day. We’re on a mission to establish our company as the UK’s go-to sustainable brand offering a carbon neutral range of liquid cleaning products that will change the way Britain cleans. We’re looking to ensure that all our products are carbon neutral and sustainable inside the packaging, the way they’re packaged, the way they’re produced and the way they’re transported and stored. All our products are designed with these goals in mind – and we like to think we’re leading by example, setting standards for the rest of the sustainable cleaning industry to follow. https://www.pwc.com/us/en/services/consulting/library/consumer-intelligence-series/consumer-and-employee-esg-expectations.html https://www.biovatehygienics.com/ Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

How to Choose a Perfect Dressing Table for Your Bedroom

How to Choose a Perfect Dressing Table for Your Bedroom

A dressing table may not be a bedroom essential, but it can make a lot of difference for both practical and aesthetic reasons. It allows you to keep all your hair and makeup products in one place, easily accessible first thing in the morning. In addition, a dressing table can complement the room’s overall design and fill up space if you feel that your room is too empty. But now you may be wondering how to choose a dressing table that will perfectly suit your needs and your bedroom. With so many available options, narrowing it down to just one furniture piece will not be easy. That is why we have prepared the following four tips to help you! 1. Decide What Features Your Dressing Table Needs Aside from their original purpose, dressing tables frequently double as writing desks and storage units. So, the first thing to consider when getting one is how it would be used and whether it would need any additional features to fulfill that purpose. For example, if you plan to use your dressing table as an additional storage unit for makeup, hair products, or jewelry, you will need to buy a piece with drawers and little compartments. That way, you will be able to organize everything properly and keep your items in order as you get ready. However, keep in mind that this kind of dressing table will likely only fit in spacier bedrooms. If you are limited in space, a dressing table that doubles as a writing desk might be a good solution. Such a table would need a larger surface area and a comfortable chair or a stool for you to sit in. Luckily, the cheap dressing tables selection tends to be rather large, so you should not have trouble finding a perfect piece. 2. Pick a Style That Suits Your Room Once you decide on your dressing table’s functionality, it is time to consider its design and the specific style you are going for. The interior design of your bedroom will play a significant role in this, as the dressing table should complement it and naturally fit in with its surroundings. To help you pick the perfect dressing table design for your bedroom, we will introduce you to some basics. For instance, you can look for: Aside from these three basic styles, there are many others to choose from; for instance, art deco, transitional, new traditional, eclectic, and more. Ultimately, you need to do your own research and find out what suits your tastes. 3. Choose Between an Oak or a Painted Table Do you want your dressing table to retain that natural, wooden feel, or would you rather have it add a dash of color to your bedroom? That will largely depend on the room’s overall design and the style you are going for. There are no specific rules for choosing the right finish, but home improvement experts give the following advice: As you can see, a painted finish is more versatile than wood, but oak comes with its own advantages. Usually, an oak finish is long-lasting and durable, ensuring continuous quality for years. In addition, certain styles, such as traditional or classic, do not work as well with painted finishes as they do with oak. 4. Consider Where to Put the Dressing Table Before ngpurchasing a dressing table, consider the space in your bedroom and how your dressing table will fit in. That does not mean only buying a smaller dressing table if you do not have a lot of room and vice versa. Instead, think about the precise position of the dressing table and the general arrangement of furniture in your bedroom. For example, dressing tables are spots where you will do your hair and makeup, so it is important to take light sources into account. If possible, place your table near a window to soak up as much of that natural light as possible! Another thing to consider is sockets, as you will most likely want to plug in your hairdryers and straighteners or even just your phone charger. Plus, putting a dressing table near sockets allows you to easily add another lamp in case your existing light sources are not sufficient. Finally, the kind of mirror you will use with your dressing table plays a large role in its placement. For instance, if you opt for a hanging mirror, you will need to put the table against a wall to accommodate it. But if the dressing table comes with a built-in mirror, that will not be as much of a concern. In Conclusion Ultimately, all interior designers’ rules and advice should serve only as guidance when choosing a perfect dressing table for your bedroom. What matters the most is that you are satisfied with your choice, even if it doesn’t necessarily fit the ideal from home improvement catalogs.
