Balfour Beatty awarded £67 million contract for Liberton High School campus

Balfour Beatty yesterday announced that it has been awarded a £67 million contract by the City of Edinburgh Council to deliver a replacement campus at Liberton High School in Edinburgh, Scotland. Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the design and construction of the new 13,470 square metre campus alongside facilities for the local community including a state-of-the-art synthetic sports pitch, a library and café. As part of its sustainability strategy, ‘Building New Futures’ and its ongoing commitment to leaving a lasting, positive legacy in the communities in which it operates, Balfour Beatty will create numerous new areas for biodiversity and will also work closely with ecologists to protect existing habitats in the adjacent conservation area. Once complete, the campus will become Balfour Beatty’s first Passivhaus certified building – a quality assurance process for the design and construction of low energy buildings – and will be one of the first certified schools to be built in Scotland. To achieve the coveted rating, the building has been designed to be energy efficient and will utilize high-performance windows and doors, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery to reduce carbon emissions, improve indoor air quality, and reduce energy demand and heating bills. Hector MacAulay MBE, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s regional business in Scotland said: “At Balfour Beatty, we have a long and proud history in delivering education facilities in Scotland. “Throughout construction, we will work hard to give back to the local community, creating and delivering new construction based educational pathways which will equip students with the skills and experience they need for a lasting, fulfilling career in our sector.” Councillor Joan Griffiths, Education, Children and Families Convener at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “It’s great to see work starting on the replacement Liberton High which is the latest school we are building for our young people. “These new school campuses are innovatively and sustainably designed so they are inspirational places for learning for the next generation of young people creating a vibrant and thriving learning environment.” Works are due to commence later this year with completion expected in 2026. New scheme from Sussex housebuilder turns renters into buyers

New scheme from Sussex housebuilder turns renters into buyers

Sussex housebuilder Barratt David Wilson Southern Counties is launching an innovative new scheme to turn renters into buyers by helping them build the deposit they need to buy whilst allowing them to live in their dream new home. The new scheme, called Rent then Buy, will allow qualifying first time buyers to put down just a 2.5% deposit, exchange contracts and move into their new home straight away. It is being launched initially as a pilot in the Barratt David Wilson Southern Regions across the South East at its Ecclesden Park development in Angmering, Meadowburne Place development in Lower Willingdon and Ryebank Gate in Yapton. Using the scheme buyers can spend six months renting their chosen new home while their monthly payments build their deposit up to 5%. At the end of the six-month rental period, the money they have paid in rent is counted as being the remaining 2.5% of their deposit, and they can then draw down a 95% mortgage and complete the purchase of their new home. Adrian MacDiarmid, Head of Mortgages at Barratt Developments, said. “First time buyers often tell us they can’t save for a deposit because they are already paying “their landlord’s mortgage”. This is why we are launching Rent then Buy to solve that problem for FTBs. The scheme offers an innovative way to speed up the saving process, allowing homebuyers to get started on their new life in one of our beautiful new homes across the South-East.” The new scheme, which will be available at selected homes and developments, is open to first time buyers who are buying a home to live in themselves, have saved a 2.5% deposit and are financially qualified to take out a 95% mortgage. The home they are buying must be priced at no more than £425,000. The process of buying using Rent then Buy is as follows: “With saving for a deposit becoming increasingly difficult and with rents rising fast, Rent then Buy offers homebuyers a chance to seize the moment and lock in the home of their choice,” adds Adrian MacDiarmid. “Instead of paying private rent that eats up all their savings, they can put that money to good use as part of their deposit, all while they are enjoying living in their new home.” For further information about the properties available at Barratt David Wilson Homes’ Ecclesden Park, Meadowburne Place or Ryebank Gate developments, please visit www.dwh.co.uk / www.barratthomes.co.uk or call 0333 355 8498 / 0333 355 8499. Smith Mordak on tackling retrofit, shifting mentalities, and getting into uncomfortable conversations

Smith Mordak on tackling retrofit, shifting mentalities, and getting into uncomfortable conversations

This week, the UK’s first ever International Retrofit Conference is taking place as part of BE-ST Fest, a two-day industry summit focused on zero carbon construction and organised by Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST). BE-ST Fest is the culmination of a month-long festival for the sustainable built environment, bringing together hundreds of professionals in construction and related sectors to showcase best practice and highlight emerging opportunities. In this interview with BE-ST, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC)’s CEO Smith Mordak digs into some pressing questions to set the scene ahead of their keynote address. What is the role of individuals, industry, and government in shifting mentalities to bring about change? We all have a role to play. We each have valid perspectives, agency, and responsibility to use whatever skills, power, and tactics we can. We also each form the context for each other. We all contribute to the wider sense of possibility. Industry can demonstrate to individuals and governments that we have the capacity and appetite for more ambitious regulation. Individuals can collectively show governments that action on the climate and biodiversity emergencies is electorally popular. Governments can show leadership both with legislation and the way they steward the public estate. This positive feedback loop can be broken when trust is broken through fragmented or stop-start legislation, or when uncertainty and scarcity make long-term thinking difficult. As with all relationships, a commitment to ongoing, honest, and transparent communication can help repair and maintain trust between us all. We can all do our part to uphold communication and trust. You’ve previously been critical of international forums and events like COP. But why do you think it’s important to continue to come to events like BE-ST Fest and the Retrofit Conference to speak? Despite some controversial noises this year, COP remains a unique gathering when our two key audiences – governments and businesses – get together to make decisions and build momentum for decarbonisation. Apparently, this is from the tv show the ‘West Wing’, but I think it holds up that “Decisions are made by those that show up”. This is why we’ll be at COP28 and BE-ST Fest and other national and international events. How do we make sure these events are focussed on progress, solutions, and acceleration, rather than barriers? We need to get into the uncomfortable conversations, to find the points where there isn’t yet consensus. We may broadly agree as a civilisation that climate change is real and needs tackling, but how this should be done, and how big the changes are that we need to see, are still far from agreed upon. We all need to show up with curiosity and willingness to approach the difficult and confronting decisions with kindness and openness, both as individuals and institutions. What is your call to action for the audience at the International Retrofit Conference? At UKGBC we are launching a major campaign, Upgrading Britain’s Homes, focused on persuading political parties to step up the investment we need to fix leaky, draughty homes across the UK. With an election around the corner, we’ll be championing the opportunities of a national retrofit campaign not just to net zero but to regeneration, the housing crisis, and health and wellbeing. I’m hoping to open a conversation about how we tackle the retrofit crisis directly, not simply through economic tools that we assume will work. In my keynote address, I’m using an analogy about how experiments attempting to detect life on earth from space have failed to demonstrate the existence of organic life, only evidence of technology. I wonder whether this is to do with the detecting equipment used and whether we’re suffering similar biases with the retrofit challenge. It will be an interesting conversation! Smith will be exploring their perspective on the retrofit challenge further during their keynote speech at the International Retrofit Summit alongside other speakers including BE-ST’s Head of Retrofit, Caitriona Jordan, Rachel Owens, Co-Director of the National Retrofit Hub and Robert Deegan, Principal Officer for Residential Energy Efficiency, Government of Ireland, among others. Harron Homes gives hope to OPAL school

Harron Homes gives hope to OPAL school

Local housebuilder Harron Homes has donated 30 pairs of high-quality wellies to the children of Staveley Primary Junior School in Staveley, Chesterfield, close to Harron Homes’ Thorpe Meadows development. Staveley Junior School is part of the Outdoor Play And Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme, which aims to encourage creative outdoor play in schools, leading to increased focus in the classroom and the ability for children to regulate their behaviours. In fact, schools applying OPAL’s play-focused approach have seen a reduction of recorded behavioural incidents by around 80%. Staveley Junior School is a school of 146 children serving the community of Staveley, which aims to provide an excellent education while providing pupils with life experiences they might not be able to access at home, including opportunities to play, be creative, and learn outdoors. In light of this, Staveley Primary School is on a mission to develop its outdoor space while implementing the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) scheme over the next 18 months. A core part of this project is ensuring the pupils have suitable outdoor attire for rainy days and during the colder seasons. Harron Homes’ generous donation of wellies constitutes a significant contribution toward this need, equipping the children with comfortable, durable wellies for fun and educational outdoor activities. Sue Parkes, Headteacher at Staveley Junior School, said, “The children are delighted with the wellies. They’ve already started learning outdoors, but this will allow them to continue to do so through-out the upcoming winter months so that they can get the benefits of outdoor learning throughout the year. “Many of our families would not be able to equip their children with outdoor attire of their own – particularly at this time of rising costs across the board. Harron Homes’ donation of these high-quality wellies is therefore a huge help, and we would like to extend our gratitude towards everyone at the company.” Natalie Griffiths, Sales and Marketing Director for Harron Homes North Midlands, said: “Harron Homes is a housebuilder with community at its heart. We are dedicated to the communities where we build and make it a priority to support schools local to our developments. Last year we donated hi-vis jackets to the pupils of Inkersall Primary Academy in Chesterfield to help them during Walk to School Month, and it’s great to be able to help out another school this year. “All children deserve the opportunity to learn in a creative and dynamic way, and we’re excited to see how Staveley Primary School develops its outdoor play offering for these bright young minds.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Behind the Scenes: How Aluminium Suppliers Keep Your Projects Running Smoothly

When you embark on a construction, manufacturing, or renovation project, you may not always think about the role of aluminium suppliers in making it all happen. However, these behind-the-scenes players play a crucial role in ensuring that your projects run smoothly and successfully. In this blog, we will take a closer look at how aluminium suppliers contribute to the success of your endeavors, from providing quality materials to offering essential support and services.By considering these factors and building a strong collaborative relationship with your supplier, you can navigate your projects with confidence, knowing that you have a trusted ally behind the scenes. 1. Quality Materials One of the primary ways aluminium suppliers keep your projects running smoothly is by providing high-quality materials. Aluminium is a versatile metal known for its strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. Suppliers source and process aluminium to meet specific industry standards and customer requirements. These suppliers offer a wide range of aluminium products, including sheets, coils, extrusions, and more, each tailored to various applications. Whether you need aluminium for constructing aircraft, manufacturing automotive parts, or fabricating architectural elements, a reliable supplier ensures that the materials meet the necessary specifications. 2. Variety and Customization Aluminium suppliers understand that projects vary widely in scope and requirements. To accommodate this diversity, they offer a variety of aluminium alloys, grades, and finishes. This variety allows you to choose the exact material that suits your project’s needs, whether it’s a specific alloy for aerospace applications or a decorative finish for architectural elements. Furthermore, many suppliers offer customization options. They can cut, shape, and finish the aluminium to your precise specifications. This flexibility is invaluable for projects that demand unique dimensions or specialized surface treatments, such as anodizing or powder coating. 3. Consistency and Reliability For a project to run smoothly, consistency and reliability are paramount. Aluminium suppliers work diligently to maintain a consistent supply chain, ensuring that you receive materials on time and as ordered. This reliability prevents delays and keeps your project timeline on track. Additionally, established suppliers often have backup plans and contingencies in place to mitigate potential disruptions in the supply chain. This proactive approach helps prevent project delays due to unexpected events, such as natural disasters or logistical issues. 4. Technical Expertise Aluminium suppliers are not just providers of raw materials; they also offer valuable technical expertise. Their experienced teams can assist you in selecting the right aluminium alloy and grade for your specific application. They can provide guidance on material properties, finishing options, and best practices for working with aluminium. Moreover, suppliers can help you troubleshoot any challenges that may arise during your project. Whether you encounter issues with material compatibility, fabrication techniques, or finishing processes, their technical support can be instrumental in finding solutions and preventing costly setbacks. 5. Compliance and Certification Quality and safety are paramount in any project, and aluminium suppliers play a significant role in ensuring compliance with industry standards and certifications. Reputable suppliers adhere to rigorous quality control processes and are often certified to international standards such as ISO 9001. These certifications provide assurance that the materials you receive meet the required specifications and quality benchmarks. Furthermore, aluminium suppliers stay up-to-date with industry regulations and environmental standards. They are committed to sustainable practices, which can be beneficial for projects that prioritize eco-friendly materials and processes. 6. Inventory Management Managing inventory efficiently is another critical aspect of keeping your projects running smoothly. Aluminium suppliers often offer just-in-time (JIT) delivery and inventory management services. This means they can deliver materials precisely when you need them, reducing the need for extensive on-site storage and associated costs. JIT delivery ensures that you have the required aluminium materials on hand when you need them, minimizing the risk of material shortages or overstocking issues that can disrupt your project’s flow. 7. Cost Savings Aluminium suppliers can help you save costs in various ways. First, their expertise in material selection can help you choose the most cost-effective aluminium alloy for your application. Second, their ability to provide bulk quantities and competitive pricing can lead to significant savings, especially for larger projects. Additionally, working with established suppliers often comes with the advantage of access to favorable payment terms and credit arrangements, further supporting your project’s financial stability. 8. Relationship Building Strong and lasting relationships with aluminium suppliers can be an asset for your future projects. Building a collaborative partnership can lead to better communication, streamlined processes, and enhanced problem-solving capabilities. This can contribute to smoother project execution and more successful outcomes in the long run. 9. Sustainable Practices Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration in modern construction and manufacturing projects. Reputable aluminium suppliers understand the importance of eco-friendly practices and often implement sustainable measures in their operations. They may source aluminium from responsible suppliers, recycle scrap materials, and reduce waste generation. By partnering with a supplier committed to sustainability, you not only contribute to a greener future but also align your project with environmental regulations and certifications. This can be a significant advantage, especially when working on projects that require adherence to sustainability standards or that involve eco-conscious clients. 10. Continuous Improvement Leading aluminium suppliers are committed to continuous improvement in their products and services. They invest in research and development to explore new alloys, manufacturing processes, and surface treatments. This commitment to innovation ensures that you have access to the latest advancements in aluminium technology, which can enhance the performance, durability, and aesthetics of your project. By choosing a supplier focused on continuous improvement, you gain a competitive edge in terms of product quality and efficiency, ultimately contributing to the overall success of your project. In conclusion, aluminium suppliers are essential behind-the-scenes players in ensuring the success of your construction, manufacturing, or renovation projects. Their commitment to providing quality materials, technical expertise, reliability, compliance, and cost-effective solutions all contribute to keeping your projects running smoothly. By choosing the right supplier and fostering a strong partnership, you can navigate your projects with confidence and achieve your goals efficiently
