RWO engineer £8m care home win

A North East firm of engineers has won a six-figure contract to support the construction of a new multi-million-pound care home and assisted living facility in North Yorkshire. The move will see RWO provide onsite civil and structural engineering services around the £8m extra care development of 12 bungalows and 70 fully equipped apartments in Guisborough, which is being built for care home operator Housing 21 by Countryside Partnership North East. Engineering services to facilitate the development of six pairs of semi-detached units, each featuring a private garden area and off street parking, will be part of a comprehensive package of support provided by the Newcastle-based engineers to bring forward the complex. A mix of one and two bedroomed fully equipped and self-contained apartments to provide independent living are also being designed and engineered by RWO along with a café/bistro, hair salon, communal lounge and gardens among other communal facilities. The work will also see RWO provide designs for both civil and structural engineering associated with the development. With 30 people employed across its North East and Yorkshire offices and targeting revenues in excess of £2.5m in the next 12 months, the Countryside Partnership work comes as RWO continues to see strong growth and recruit skilled engineers to meet demand for its services. RWO’s managing director Ross Oakley, who said two more new care home projects were in the pipeline, said: “Demand for care homes and assisted living accommodation is strong. So, it’s a real privilege to work with Countryside Partnerships and Housing 21 on this latest scheme and to deliver on their vision for the highest quality living spaces for residents.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Ayrshire Hospice breaks ground on new build

The Ayrshire Hospice officially marked the start of building work on its major £17 million-pound redevelopment project on Wednesday 5th April. Tracy said: “This is a historic milestone for the Ayrshire Hospice and, as a team, we are so excited to start building our new hospice which will be a centre of excellence for palliative and end of life care for the people of Ayrshire and Arran, right here in Racecourse Road.” Site clearing and demolition carried out by McLaughlin & Harvey began in December last year and the ground is now ready for work to begin to deliver a facility Ayrshire can be proud of. John McClintock, McLaughlin & Harvey Operations Director – Healthcare, explained: “McLaughlin & Harvey is delighted to have marked the first official milestone of our Ayrshire Hospice project. We bring with us a wealth of previous healthcare experience, and look forward to undertaking the substructure and structural works on this meaningful project in the coming weeks.” The Ayrshire Hospice Board of Trustees and Leadership Team were joined by Provost Iain Campbell and Chief Executive Eileen Howat from South Ayrshire Council, in addition to Craig McArthur, Director of Health and Social Care Partnership for East Ayrshire Council and Russell McCutcheon, Executive Director (Place), from North Ayrshire Council. Esh Construction pledges funding to NHS ‘Green Prescribing Places’ in Sheffield

Esh Construction pledges funding to NHS ‘Green Prescribing Places’ in Sheffield

The donations were made as part of Esh’s work with Sheffield Housing Company on the Lytton Road development Two new allotments have been created in Sheffield as part of the NHS ‘Green Social Prescribing Places’ initiative thanks to Esh Construction, Sheffield Housing Company and YORhub teaming up to provide funding. Working in partnership with SOAR Community in Sheffield, a regeneration charity that provides services to improve a person’s health, wellbeing and employability, the donation has funded allotments at Foxhill Medical Centre and Grenoside Medical Centre. The NHS ‘Green Social Prescribing Places’ initiative allows GP’s, health and care practitioners, and local agencies, to refer people to nature-based interventions and activities, such as local walking for health schemes, community gardening and food-growing projects. Megan Ohri from SOAR Partnership said: “We’re grateful to Esh for supporting the development of these community gardens so that we can work with the GP surgeries to support more people via green social prescribing.” Chris Stocks, Practice Manager at Grenoside Surgery, said: “Grenoside Surgery has a long-standing relationship with SOAR in their role as a provider of social prescribing to our patients. One of the areas that the surgery has been interested in is the concept of green prescribing which encourages patients with issues of social isolation to meet socially and undertake projects around gardening. “We were therefore delighted when contacted by SOAR to hear that Esh, who are building new homes in our area, had this as one of their objectives and would be able to support a project at our main Grenoside site.  Community Health Partnerships (CHP), owned by the Department of Health and Social Care, is head tenant for 310 primary and community health care buildings across England including Foxhill Medical Centre. Simon McKinna, Community Health Partnerships (CHP) Operations and Relationships Manager at Foxhill Medical Centre said: “We worked with the GP team at Foxhill Medical Centre and SOAR to help set up the project, identifya suitable location with the building owners, facilitate hard landscaping deliveries and access arrangements. We’re pleased to see so many patients involved in the project and the positive impact it’s had on their health and wellbeing.” A donation has also been made to Foxhill Medical Centre’s Art Group which has allowed the project to continue operating for another seven months after it became at risk of closure due to lack of funding. Esh Construction pledged the funding as part of its commitment to YORhub’s, YOR4Good Fund, a community grant initiative which supports economic regeneration projects through schemes awarded through the YORhub construction frameworks. The donations were made as part of the Lytton Road development, a 44-home project being delivered on behalf of Sheffield Housing Company, procured via the YORbuild2 framework. Megan Roberts, social value manager at Esh Construction, said: “We are always striving to support organisations, charities and community groups that work within the local communities surrounding our construction projects. The two medical centres are located just one mile from our site which will allow us to leave a lasting legacy in the area. It has been a pleasure to work alongside Sheffield Housing Company and YORhub on yet another successful project, helping support great charities who make an important difference for people in need.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

The new contract will create a second storey extension to the current single storey development adding a further two theatres to the original development and creating a total of four new theatres with ward accommodation and dedicated plantrooms. By utilising Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) MTX ensures the fully compliant facilities minimise build times by up to 50% and waste by up to 60%, whilst delivering facilities of exceptional quality. Contract Signed to Build Oriel, a State-of-the-art Eye Health Centre

Contract Signed to Build Oriel, a State-of-the-art Eye Health Centre

A £300 million contract has been awarded to Bouygues UK to build Oriel, a new eye care, research and education centre in Camden. Oriel is a joint initiative between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity that will see services move to a brand-new integrated centre on part of the St Pancras Hospital site.  The two-acre site earmarked for Oriel was owned by Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (C&I). Moorfields acquired the site on 1 February 2023 through an NHS-to-NHS transaction approved by the Secretary of State for Health.  These significant milestones follow final NHS and government approval for the centre in November 2022 and Camden Council granting full planning permission in August 2022.  Demolition of six buildings currently on the Oriel site will now begin at the end of February and construction of the 10-storey, 47,000 sq. m, centre will start later in 2023.  Preparation work started on the site in autumn last year under an early works agreement with Bouygues UK and they have now developed a full construction programme with the building due to open in 2027.  The new centre – part of the New Hospital Programme, the biggest hospital building programme in a generation – will harness the expertise of the partners under one roof and will enable closer collaborative working between clinicians and researchers to speed up the delivery of the highest quality treatments and therapies for patients.   Martin Kuper, Moorfields chief executive, said: “These latest developments move us firmly into the construction stage of the project. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this stage. We are excited to be working with Bouygues UK to build our state-of-the-art centre which will support our reputation for excellence and our ability to deliver outstanding care for our patients.”  Professor Alan Thompson, Dean of the UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences, said: “Meeting these milestones is a major achievement and I am incredibly excited about demolition beginning later this month and construction starting this year. Oriel will allow us to drive forward real innovation to support our work in the long-term and strengthen our partnership with Moorfields in delivering real benefits for patients.”  Robert Dufton, Moorfields Eye Charity chief executive, said: “This is another major step forward for Oriel and we are very much looking forward to construction starting this year. We’ve been working in partnership with our generous donors because philanthropy is a key part of the Oriel funding mix and has a vital role in securing the future of eye health on a global scale. We believe the new centre will provide patients, who are at the heart of everything we do, with the best treatments, faster.”  Fabienne Viala, chair of Bouygues Construction in the United Kingdom, said: “To be partnering on this world-leading centre in eye care, research and education is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Bouygues UK. We are so proud to be the leading contractor for this innovative building which will be an exemplar for accessibility, tailored to the needs of its patients, and designed flexibly to meet their future needs. As with all our projects, social value will be key for us and we are looking forward to working with the Oriel partners, Camden Council and the Knowledge Quarter to unlock training and employment opportunities for local people to create a lasting legacy in the community.”  The new centre will be located in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter, an internationally renowned hub for science and innovation. It is close to the UCL Bloomsbury campus and several of our NHS, commercial and charity partners.   Oriel will be built on two acres of the five-acre St Pancras Hospital site. The rest of the site is being developed by Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust and King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership. The proposed development will provide modern, accessible and sustainable mental health facilities fit for the 21st century, as well as new offices, homes, retail, leisure and public spaces in a place which is accessible and welcoming to all.  For more information about Oriel, the construction programme and upcoming milestones please visit www.oriel-london.org.uk. Graham wins mental health facility contract

Construction firm GRAHAM has been selected to develop a new state-of-the-art mental health facility on land owned by the Trust in Mossley Hill, Liverpool. The firm was selected by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. Following a competitive tendering process overseen by Liverpool & Sefton Health Partnership, GRAHAM was chosen as the preferred construction partner due to its extensive experience in delivering numerous healthcare projects across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Designed by architect Gilling Dod, the new inpatient facility will phase out traditional shared dormitory mental health wards to provide 80 single bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. Throughout the hospital, there will be an emphasis on providing therapeutic spaces with light and airy environments as well as facilities for family visitation and multi-faith worship. Outside, there will be access for patients to spend time in garden areas. “It’s a privilege to be named construction partner of this new, state-of-the-art facility for Liverpool, which has been beautifully designed by architect Gilling Dod to provide a modern and therapeutic environment that centres patient recuperation and recovery. We’re delighted to be partnering with Mersey Care NHS Hospital Trust, which is committed to improving inpatient and community services and setting higher standards in healthcare,” said Peter Reavey, GRAHAM Regional Director. Plans for the new development were approved in 2022 and the former hospital buildings, which were deemed unfit for purpose, were demolished in February. Demolition experts recycled around 95 per cent of the salvage and buildings were crushed for re-use on site as future building fill materials for the new facility. BAM appointed for Women and Children’s Hospital

Contractor BAM has been appointed Principal Supply Chain Partner by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver a new Women and Children’s Hospital for Cornwall. The proposed new building has been designed to bring together the hospital’s maternity services, neo-natal and paediatric care, obstetrics and gynaecology services within one, state-of-the-art facility. It would also become the location for the hospital’s new main entrance, transforming the layout of the current site in Truro. The programme, which has expanded in scope since its inception, is starting with the demolition of six derelict houses to create the space for a works compound for BAM whilst major enabling and building works for the new hospital are carried out over the next six years. Work is also underway to relocate car parking for patients and visitors, another key enabling project in progressing the wider programme. Roberta Fuller, Programme Director for the Women and Children’s Hospital, and Head of Hospital Reconfiguration at Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, said of the appointment: “We are delighted to have appointed BAM as our Principal Supply Chain Partner. This is a really important partnership for the Royal Cornwall Hospital, and we are pleased to be moving forward with the enabling works projects with support from the New Hospital Programme. Our designs for the new Women and Children’s Hospital are based on meeting the needs of our local community in Cornwall and will transform the hospital site. These hospitals are being built to national standards using modern methods of construction, with environmental features throughout to support the NHS’s carbon net zero ambitions. Smart digital innovations and enhancements are also planned for the scheme for example, creating sensory and interactive play areas, systems to connect families and carers remotely in the delivery of care, and enhancements to the management of patient call systems to provide a quieter, calmer environment on the wards.
