Matthew Clark Wholesale Relocates to Thorp Arch Estate

National drinks distributor Matthew Clark Wholesale Ltd has relocated to a new purpose built distribution facility at Thorp Arch Estate, near Wetherby. The firm, which distributes both soft and alcoholic drinks to thousands of hotels, clubs, pubs and restaurants across the north of England, has relocated to the 62,925 sq ft site, Unit 512. The move was one of the biggest commercial property deals in Yorkshire over the last 18 months. The relocation has meant that 90 jobs have been transferred to the Thorp Arch Estate, which has seen Matthew Clark Wholesale move its Yorkshire operation from the Derwent Valley Industrial Estate, in Dunnington, near York. The firm had previously been based there for over 15 years. The Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust owns the Thorp Arch Estate. Unit 512 is the third biggest unit on the 385-acre Thorp Arch Estate, a former wartime munitions factory, and the largest warehouse that Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust has built for a new tenant Director of Wharfedale Property Management, which manages the estate for owner, Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust, Tim Munns, commented: “The completion of the Matthew Clark Wholesale Ltd relocation is further evidence that Thorp Arch Estate is becoming the top destination for businesses across north Leeds, Harrogate and York which want to expand and be near the motorway network but do not want to move to the M62 corridor.“ The new Matthew Clark Wholesale distribution hub will include nine dock levellers, two level-entry goods access doors, a large goods yard and 6,350 sq ft of office space. Property and construction consultants, LHL Group, York, managed the construction for Rockspring. Ian Gordon, Matthew Clark’s regional managing director, Ian Gordon, commented: “We are delighted with our brand new depot, providing us with more space to operate and allowing us to be closer to the motorway network, all of which serve our customers better within the region. “These factors were crucial when it came to choosing the new location as we continuously look to strengthening the service to our customers.”

Balfour Beatty Urges Government to Commit to Devolution

The latest report from Balfour Beatty has urged the government to maintain a commitment to devolution in the autumn statement to stop the issue of devolution from “slipping off the radar.” The contractor’s report, entitled ‘Where now for combined authorities?’, outlines 10 recommendations made to maintain the devolution agenda in the face of political uncertainty resulting from the EU referendum and the resultant government shake up. The top recommendations made are for the government to maintain its commitment to devolution and to remove the uncertainty around EU funding for local authorities. Up until 2020, the EU has allocated £5.3 billion of regeneration funds to local councils, however the future of this funding is still not clear as the UK continues to negotiate its way out of the EU. Mike Reade, Regional Director at Balfour Beatty, said that a possible loss of funding is “certainly a concern” for local government and there is a danger that the devolution agenda may “slip off the radar” if the government places all of its focus on negotiating its way out of the EU. Reade commented: “It is the uncertainty that hurts. If there is uncertainty on policy and uncertainty on funding, then there is a danger that the momentum of devolution is lost.” Mr Reade said devolution is important for contractors because it has encouraged local government to become more commercially aware. This in turn has encouraged local councils to engage with the private sector in making investment decisions. He said: “From our point of view, discussions taking place around public and private partnerships means we’re starting to see longer programmes of work being talked about. “If we get to enter into some closer public/private partnership relationships and get more visibility about future programmes, we can be more confident about our future.”

National Awards for top performing construction companies and suppliers

Considerate Constructors Scheme crowns Most Considerate Companies and Most Considerate Supplier at 2016 National Awards The Considerate Constructors Scheme – the national scheme established by the construction industry to improve its image – has recognised the Most Considerate Companies and Suppliers at this year’s National Awards. Four companies were presented with the coveted top award of ‘Most Considerate Company 2016’, they are: Connect Plus Services (annual turnover: £10m and over); Rydon Maintenance – Islington (annual turnover: £3.5m to <£10m); Linfoot Country Homes Ltd (annual turnover: £250k to <£3.5m) and Solent Industrial Roofing Systems (annual turnover: Under £250k). HSS Hire Service Group Ltd triumphed as the ‘Most Considerate Supplier 2016’, making them the first registered supplier to win this prestigious title since Supplier Registration was introduced in 2014. The Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Awards are one of the most respected accolades in UK construction. By registering with the Scheme, companies and suppliers demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the image of the industry. The awards recognise the highest performing companies and suppliers which have demonstrated excellence in relation to the community, the environment and their workforce. The prestigious awards ceremony took place on 10 and 11 November at the Four Seasons hotel in London. In total 21 Gold, 32 Silver and 43 Bronze Awards were presented to registered companies, and two Gold, one Silver and four Bronze Awards to registered suppliers. Of the Gold Award winners, seven companies were shortlisted and received the ‘Most Considerate Company Runner-up’ and one supplier the ‘Most Considerate Supplier Runner-up’. Connect Plus Services undertakes planned and reactive highway maintenance works to sections of the M25 motorway and its arterial link roads through a 30-year contract with Highways England. This enthusiastic and safety-conscious team was applauded for its constant refinement of depot and site safety, and consideration of its workforce. Linfoot Country Homes Ltd is a family-owned business located near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, specialising in high quality new and converted homes in the South Midlands for over 20 years. In constantly striving to achieve yet higher standards, this company projected an image which was a credit to all those involved. Rydon Maintenance (North London Region) is in the 13th year of a long-term contract with Islington Council for the repair and maintenance of more than 6000 properties. This potentially intrusive work demands a high degree of care and consideration and this was clearly demonstrated by Rydon through its community work. Based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Solent Industrial Roofing Systems specialises in providing roofing services industry-wide. One recent project was for a storage building on a military base in Wiltshire and the company spared no effort in ensuring the development was sensitive to the client’s operations security standards. Undertaking inner London deliveries is no easy task, but HSS Hire Service Group Ltd, whose head office is based in Mitcham, south west London, has robust policies and procedures in place to ensure professional, safe and efficient operations. Proud to honour the great achievements Considerate Constructors Scheme Executive Chairman Isabel Martinson said: “Congratulations to all award winners. The Scheme is hugely proud to honour the great achievements of top performing registered companies and suppliers. Over 900 companies and suppliers registered with the Scheme in the past 12 months, representing significant growth on the previous year, and making competition even tougher. With such high demand for construction activity across the UK, it is essential that the industry works collaboratively and continues to raise standards.” Click here to see each of the winners in the categories of Runners-up to the Most Considerate Company Award, and Runner-up to Most Considerate Supplier Award, as well as each Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winner. Foster & Partners Chosen for £7.1m London Zoo Job

Foster & Partners has been selected for a £7.1 million overhaul of Cedric Price’s pioneering 1965 Snowdon Aviary at London Zoo. The firm is set to transforms the Grade II listed building, which was recently added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register. It will be transformed into a new walk-through colobus monkey enclosure, which will provide visitors with an ‘up-close experience of the stunning primates’. Conceived by Antony Armstrong-Jones (Lord Snowdon, who studied architecture at Cambridge) and delivered by architect Cedric Price and engineer Frank Newby, the structure next to the Regent’s Canal has four large tetrahedral frames and became Britain’s first walk-through aviary when it opened 51 years ago. It is one of the zoo’s 13 listed structures. The client, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) described the appointment of Foster & Partners as ‘symbolic’, given Price’s manifest influence on Foster’s work. Director David Field commented: “It’s fitting that a structure with such a unique history should be given new life by a world-class firm with such a strong heritage. “Our most ambitious project to date, the new aviary will reflect our decades of animal expertise and delivering innovative visitor experiences. “London Zoo has a long history of leading the way in architecture and design and has many listed buildings that have stood the test of time.” Norman Foster added: “The Snowdon Aviary [is] a rare example of a completed work by Cedric Price. I have a particular personal affection for it as it shows most strongly the influence of our mutual friend and mentor Buckminster Fuller.” “The redevelopment of the aviary is a unique opportunity to preserve this exceptional structure and the legacy of pioneering architecture at ZSL London Zoo. It will be a great privilege to be able to contribute to the tradition of contemporary architectural additions at one of London’s most cherished institutions.”

Heathrow Airport Reveals 7% Rise in Cargo Volumes

Heathrow Airport has revealed that cargo volumes have increased by 7% as it is buoyed by the expansion decision. The rise has capped a buoyant month for the transport hub after the government decided to expand the airport at the end of last month. Heathrow officials said that cargo volumes increased by 7% in October, although the total number of passengers went down slightly to 6.5 million from 6.8 million in September. This is along with a 1.2% year on year fall which it blames on last month’s Hurricane Matthew in the US. The airport accounted for 30% of all exports from the UK by value outside the EU last year, and Heathrow has seized upon the latest increase in cargo numbers to further argue that the government’s decision to green light expansion was the right one. Consultations on a draft policy statement are set to get underway next year, though it is expected to be a long and arduous road to securing the construction of a third runway at the London airport with continued opposition and legal battles set to carry on taking place. John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow Chief Executive, said that the airport had already started planning how to deliver a third runway and was keen to emphasise that the benefits of expansion would be felt right across the UK. He added: “With the support of communities across the UK, Heathrow is now working at pace to deliver the benefits of Britain’s new runway – an affordable plan that creates more jobs, boosts exporters and builds an economy that is stronger and fairer for everyone – as quickly as possible.” The third runway at Heathrow threatens to worsen air quality in central London, according to the Government’s own analysis. It also raised doubts over whether another runway could be opened in 2025 at the west London airport without breaching EU legal limits on air pollution. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has said that meeting air quality legal requirements is a condition of planning approval.

SCH Site Services to Help Stiller Expand with £750k Warehouse

Steel firm SCH Site Services is helping major logistics company Stiller to expand once more with the development of a £750,000 warehouse. Based on Aycliffe Business Park, Stiller Warehousing and Distribution is in the process of building a new 40,000 sq ft warehouse for its rapidly expanding list of customers. The latest development will stand at 10 metres tall and will have the capacity to store a further 6,000 pallets for the family run business. The scheme will support dozens of local jobs during its construction. Darlington bases ADG Architects will manage the project with civil engineering support from Durham based firm BDN. Hall Construction is its main contractor, based nearby at Rushyford, which awarded Aycliffe based SCH a project to fabricate and erect its frame using 90 tonnes of steel. CH, which has previously worked with Hall Construction on the refurbishment of buildings at PD Ports on Teesside, completed the steel fabrication and erection of the frame within eight weeks, and the warehouse is expected to be fully completed in the New Year. SCH managing director Gary Finley said: “We’re delighted to have worked on a project so close to us in Newton Aycliffe which is supporting several local employers. “We fabricated the steel in-house at our facility just around the corner from Stiller’s site and erected it on site. “The extension had to join an existing warehouse which made it a little more complex than a stand- alone shed and we also had to design the end connections for the structure, but we’re pleased we’ve been able to work with one of our neighbours in enabling their ambitious plans for future growth.” The new warehouse will take Stiller’s recent investments in equipment, people and property to more than £6.4 million in the last three years.
