McLaren Construction wins ExCel London expansion

McLaren Construction has been appointed by ExCeL London to deliver the expansion of its conference, event and exhibition facilities. The builder is taking over the job from Sir Robert McAlpine, who were awarded the first three Phases of the expansion contract. After being awarded the main build contract, McLaren will now complete the project by extending the existing facilities by up to 25,000 square metres. The expansion at the carbon neutral venue will create additional state-of-the-art ICC convention facilities, exhibition halls and conference rooms, together with stunning outdoor spaces, all helping to put London at the forefront of the global events industry. “The wealth of expertise and sector knowledge that the team at McLaren will bring to the main construction phase will ensure that we meet the needs of our customers by providing world class venue spaces and guest experience, on time and on budget, as well as ensuring we deliver our commitments to the local community,” said ExCeL London’s CEO Jeremy Rees. Part of the new event space is a12,000sqm exhibition space on the ground floor, which will be seamlessly integrated into the existing venue. This will be complemented on the upper level with high-end convention space, modern meeting rooms and catering facilities. A priority for ExCeL regarding this project has been the sustainability side of it. In line with its current ESG strategy, the company aims to create the most sustainable scheme possible and will be targeting a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating of ‘Excellent’ – surpassing the recognised industry standard. As with the current venue, the electricity supply will be 100% from renewable sources. As part of the project, a substantial investment will also be made in the public realm including new greenery along the dock edge, improved landscaping for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new pocket park. The project will also create permanent and temporary employment, both in the construction process – including apprenticeships – but also indirectly once complete. McLaren Construction have been appointed to deliver the next phase of construction works, commencing in January 2023. McLaren has extensive experience of delivering UK major projects, including Leicester City Football Club’s new training ground, The Financial Times’ Bracken House’ headquarters, and a major fulfilment centre for warehouse giant SEGRO. Despite the announcement of the new building, Leeds Trinity’s campus in Horsforth, located just six miles from Leeds, will continue to be central to its offer – including new programmes in Nursing and Biomedical Science, which are being designed to respond to key public sector workforce needs in the City Region. “I am delighted to confirm that we are at the early stages of establishing a city centre location at 1 Trevelyan Square, Leeds, to complement our campus in Horsforth. ASHE Group delivers eco schools

ASHE Group has been awarded two contracts totalling nearly £30 million to deliver net zero schools for Hertfordshire County Council. The builder has already commenced work on a new £14.5 million primary school, which will be operated by the Avanti Academy Trust. The new primary school, due to open in September 2023, will provide school places for 420 children living locally. The school will offer up to 30 places at Reception as well as 26 places for nursery aged children each year from September 2023. The school size will increase year on year as the school’s first pupils progress through their school life. “We’re committed to developing sustainable communities in Hertfordshire, providing residents with the infrastructure needed to make new developments great places to live – this includes providing good local schools which children can walk to,” said Cllr Terry Douris, Executive Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning at Hertfordshire County Council. “The children joining the school in September will have the unique distinction in that they’ll be able to look at the school in 50 years’ time and say that was my school from day one. The school is being built with the future in mind; by prioritising environmental sustainability in construction and operation, we’re taking a big step towards building a cleaner, greener and healthier Hertfordshire.” The school is planning to generate its own power and be ‘net zero in operation’ using air source heating, photovoltaics and will be gas free, relying on electricity. The project aims to increase the local biodiversity by around 20% with bird and bat boxes, and green roofs included in the scheme. Once completed, the school will be Net Carbon Zero in operation, using only electricity for power and heating, aided by photovoltaic (solar) panels which will help to generate the electricity needed to run the school. “We are delighted to be breaking ground on yet another Net Zero Carbon School for Hertfordshire County Council. Stoford, one of the UK’s leading property developers, has submitted a planning application for the new BBC home in Birmingham at the historic Typhoo Building in Digbeth. Hoping to move from its current home at The Mailbox to the new 84,001 sq ft custom-built centre in 2025, BBC will also be part of one of Birmingham’s first net zero carbon in construction office buildings. The detailed planning application has been informed by two successful public consultation events and numerous online consultation responses, and represents the first phase of a wider masterplan for the surrounding area. “The feedback from the public – both those who live or work in Digbeth and the thousands of people we reached via social media who are just interested in the scheme – has been overwhelmingly positive. Birmingham’s residents, visitors, and commuters are genuinely excited at the prospect of the BBC making its home at such a recognisable and prominent building,” said Gerard Ludlow, Director at Stoford. “Typhoo Wharf is a significant opportunity, which will not only catalyse reinvigoration of the wider area, but will also help to kick start further private and public-sector investment into Digbeth’s built environment and transport connections. A total of five homes are currently available for purchase at both developments, including four at Baswich Grange and one final plot at Berswick Manor. The final properties available to purchase include a mix of three, four and five-bedroom houses, with prices starting from £255,500. Work started on the new homes at Baswich Grange at the end of 2018, with Berswick Manor launching last year to provide an additional range of luxury four and five-bedroom detached houses. North Bristol NHS Foundation Trust partners with healthcare construction specialist ModuleCo for the construction of a new state-of-the-art, Gynaecological Twin Operating Theatre Suite ModuleCo have installed a state-of-the-art Gynaecological Operating Theatre Suite for the North Bristol NHS Trust providing expanded maternity services at Southmead Hospital. The new modular facility will become part of the Southmead Maternity Services Department as dedicated gynaecological operating theatres. Southmead Hospital’s Maternity Services Department provides a full range of maternity care and more than 6,000 babies are born at the Hospital every year. Juliette Hughes, Divisional Director of Nursing for Women and Children’s Health at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “We are incredibly pleased with how closely we have been able to work with ModuleCo on this project, allowing us to design the facilities exactly as we need them. This lets us provide the best possible care to women needing routine or emergency gynaecology treatment at Southmead Hospital. “These state-of-the-art new facilities have also allowed us to upgrade all of our theatres across Women and Children’s Health in line with other theatres in the hospital.” A detailed design was developed by ModuleCo’s experienced in-house design team, consisting of thirteen modules which make up a 2,470ft2 total footprint. The facility consists of two Operating Theatres with specialist equipment for gynaecological poceedures, supported by integral scrubs, lay-up preparation rooms, anaesthetic rooms, dirty utility rooms, a 5-bed first stage recovery, offices, and various supporting and staff rest areas. Twenty-percent of the building’s power will be generated by solar panels, demonstrating the Trust’s commitment to sustainability, an agenda set forth by NHS England mandating Trusts to work towards delivering a ‘Net-Zero National Health Service’. ModuleCo’s team completed the factory assembly phase and all modules have now been installed on site. Completing 90% of the construction and fit out in the factory provides a more sustainable approach to construction and has also been vital in helping the Trust minimise disruption to their active hospital estate. Headquartered in Cheltenham, ModuleCo is part of the BladeRoom Group of companies which have delivered more than £500 million worth of mission-critical modular facilities to the UK and overseas markets, including data centres, healthcare and pharmaceutical facilities. These Operating Theatres were manufactured at their 110,000ft2 factory in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire. We have a long history in the region and we look forward to building on that history in this new and exciting facility.” Barberry Industrial, a West Midlands-based property investor and developer, has been selected to purchase the site from Birmingham City Council and Homes England to deliver a 57,000 sq ft state-of-the-art headquarters building. Barberry Industrial development director and shareholder Jon Robinson said: “This is fantastic news for Birmingham and the Advanced Manufacturing Hub and represents another excellent piece of business between IMI Truflo Marine, Birmingham City Council, the HCA and Barberry. “IMI has a long and successful history in the city and the skills and talents of local people has helped the company develop and grow into a global business employing circa 11,000 people. IMI Truflo Marine was keen to cement its future here in Birmingham’s manufacturing hub and we’re delighted to have concluded a deal which will allow us to create a global centre of engineering excellence on our Grade A site located off Junction 6 of the M6.” He added: “The new headquarters we are developing on their behalf will be a state-of-the-art facility which will match their global ambitions and align with the expectations of their customers around the world.” An application for detailed planning consent has been approved by Birmingham City Council. Construction could start on site before the end of the year, with practical completion expected in Q3 2021. Councillor Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, commented: “IMI is a Birmingham institution, so we’re absolutely delighted to welcome the company to the Advanced Manufacturing Hub. The 184,000 sq ft centre of excellence for Moog’s Aircraft Controls Segment will be built on a 10-acre site at Ashchurch, Tewkesbury. It is believed to be one of the biggest deals of the year in the manufacturing sector. Barberry has a 3.3 million sq ft industrial/logistics development portfolio with a Gross Development Value of more than £398 million. In June, Barberry announced a £40 million state-of-the-art aerospace manufacturing and design facility for a global leader in aerospace engine and flight controls systems will be developed in Gloucestershire.
