Mick George

New M.D in the hotseat at Mick George Contracting

Never one to rest on their laurels, the Mick George Group have signalled further intent to expand their ever-impressive Contracting Division following the appointment of William East to their Contracting Board, as Managing Director. Considered an integral part of the growth achieved by the Mick George Group in recent times, William has been duly rewarded for his efforts, promoted from Projects Director, a position which he formally occupied within the business for the previous 3-years. Projected to deliver Circa £55m this year, across it’s Earthworks, Demolition and Environmental provisions, the Mick George brand now takes pride of place within the Construction Industries elite; and this recent Organisation change is anticipated to further establish their status. While serving their existing loyal client base with agile, pioneering and innovative working solutions has been pivotal in the Groups upward trajectory, concerted strides have been made to strategically increase involvement with Highways, Industrial and Government funded schemes; most notably their contribution towards Highways England’s delivery of the M1 Smart Motorway scheme. The former development is recognition of the scale and profile of where Mick George’s Contracting Division currently resides, and with an impressive pipeline of projects with similar stature imminent, things continue to look bright for the business.

Mick George Ltd Splash Out on Stabilisation Kit

Having announced the appointment of two new Senior Stabilisation Managers at the back end of 2018, Mick George Ltd has further signalled its intent to grow their Stabilisation division with the six-figure acquisition of an impressive Wirtgen 250i ‘S Pack’. Having landed many high-profile contracts for its Stabilisation service in recent times, the Wirtgen 250i has been thrust straight in to action at the National Trusts Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire as part of a ‘Welcome Project’ that Mick George Ltd are completing various enabling works at. The new machine adds to an already extensive fleet of equipment but will certainly advance the Stabilisation offering by Mick George Ltd. Commonly considered ‘unrivalled’ when it comes to mobile spreading machinery, the Wirtgen 250i offers cost-efficiency, technical sophistication, optimised control systems and the ability to confront the most difficult terrains. The ‘S Pack’ has the advanced capability to spread binding agent without generating clouds of dusts, thus lowering emission levels, permitting Mick George Ltd to tackle those environments where strict emission standards exist. Yet another advantage for Mick George Ltd over its counterparts that operate the more entry level equipment. Michael George, Managing Director of Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’To maintain the exceptionally high standards that we set, we recognise the importance in continuously investing right across the business; in personnel, sites, vehicles and equipment.’’ George continued: ‘’The construction industry is ever evolving, with Stabilisation and Remediation solutions more frequently utilised in many developments. The new machine allows us to extend our offering and ensure we’re providing the same high quality that we do with all our Earthworks provisions.’’

Mick George Secure Wind Farm Package

Since the official turf cutting back in September 2018, significant progress is being made on the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm project managed by lead shareholder, Innogy. Construction specialist Mick George Ltd has now been appointed on behalf of J. Murphy and Sons Ltd to complete Earthworks at the main onshore cable site off the A16 near Stickney. The firm will be stripping the easement where the cables will be placed for this 860MW project and will have the capability to transmit renewable electricity from the wind farm to more than 800,000 UK homes per year. This estimated £2bn renewable energy scheme will not be without its engineering challenges. It involves the installation of more than 57km of underground high-voltage electrical export cable in Lincolnshire. The route starts at the landfall location north of Anderby Creek, where the onshore and offshore cables connect. It runs to a new substation being constructed near Bicker, and then to the existing National Grid Bicker Fen Substation where the electricity from the offshore wind farm will ultimately connect into the grid. Both are on the outskirts of Boston More than 300 individual directional drills – a record for a UK infrastructure project – will ensure the onshore cables can be installed without obstructing any roads, highways, rivers or drains. Although the two-year onshore construction programme is underway, offshore activities are not expected to begin until late 2019. First energy generation could be as early as 2021. At the peak of the development, the project is anticipating upward of 3,000 employment opportunities. Michael George, Managing Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’As a business that is well experienced in providing sustainable solutions through our waste management division, we recognise the importance of projects such as this and are excited to be involved.’’

Mick George Ltd tackle drought damaged Cambridgeshire roads

An initiative which started late last year to repair more than 40 miles of drought damaged roads in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will enter its final stages this month, with multiple locations set for improvements. Having completed many of the routes, especially within the Peterborough area, attention has now switched to finishing the remaining routes in Cambridgeshire, with local business Mick George Ltd permitting enabling at six separate locations on behalf of the principal contractor, Skanska. The locations include: B1104 Prickwillow Road, Isleham A1123 Stretham Road, Wicken B1040 Ramsey Road, Whittlesey B1096 Benwick Road, Ramsey A1123 Hill Row Causeway, Haddenham B1040 St Marys Road, Ramsey   In its entirety, the scheme includes 21 sections of road affected by severe weather conditions and owes largely to an investment of £6.25million made up of £3.5m secured funding from the Department for Transport and the surplus £2.75m provided by Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough County Council respectively. The major road reconstruction will include repairs down to foundation layers, and will also consist of maintenance to vegetation, drainage, signage and road markings along the specified routes. Cambridgeshire County Council, Peterborough City Council and its contractor Skanska are working together to minimise disruption to local residents and those who use the road networks. It is anticipated that the long-term approach to the maintenance of the roads included within the scheduled upgrades will prevent any need for repeated costly repairs and any extra disruption for drivers, in the future.  Michael George, Director of Contractor at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’As a business who operates on the counties roads daily, we are all the more aware of the importance of the conditioning of road infrastructure from a practical and safety perspective.’’

Mick George Diversifies into Vehicle Leasing

Mick George are diversifying and will be looking to offer vehicle purchasing and leasing services. Construction companies are not necessarily the first companies to look at when exploring the idea of purchasing or hiring vehicles. However, it is worth considering that companies in this industry are able to efficiently operate and maintain over and above 400-strong fleets in some cases.   However, before making this move it is imperative that a construction company fully understand the market it is moving into, as well as have the foresight to carry out the move and have the knowledge to add to their service portfolio in order to move successfully. Mick George Ltd have done just that and made the leap into the commercial vehicle trade. In order to carry out this expansion the company have come to an agreement with one of their established vehicle suppliers, who shares the same vision and ethos as the construction company. Steve Howell is the part owner of Neva Consultants after generating a range of experience throughout his career, which began in Car Sales in 1981. At Neva, Steve pays a central role and has been directly involved in the turning over of up to 2,000 cars a year to a range of different satisfied clients. Steve has been working with Mick George for a number of years, especially with the Finance Director Jon Stump. After helping Jon source a BMW 323SE, Steve became involved in the supply of the Company Cars, Lorries, and Tipper Trucks in volume for the construction company. The car leasing market is stable and buoyant that the moment, and Mick George Ltd will be offering vehicles at a much reduced rate while removing the hassle of maintaining the vehicle and any risk of depreciating value. This plan will be attractive to customers and will offer the construction company an innovative way to stay ahead in this uncertain market while still complementing the core of their business services.
