Armstrong Ceilings hit the heights at Farnborough

The total amount of tiles recycled by Armstrong Ceilings at the airshow has risen again. Armstrong Ceilings continues to break the mould for recycling building materials at the Farnborough International Airshow. The UK manufacturer has again exceeded the amount of ceiling tiles it recycles at the bi-annual show it has supplied for the past four events, this year some 14,769m2 compared to the 13,400m2 it recycled in 2014 – the first time the company employed its Off-Cut scheme as well as its End-Of-Life scheme. Not only that, the amount of mineral ceilings recycled from the potential from more than 200 temporary corporate hospitality and business chalets and exhibition halls on site rose from 61% in 2014 to 79.8% this year, winning praise from the show’s head of operational development and Health and Safety. Jonathan Smith said: “I am extremely pleased with the outcomes this year working with Armstrong. There has been a significant year-on-year improvement over the last few shows since we began working together.” Some 1,885m2 (or 12.7%) of this year’s recycling total was from 70 bags of ceiling tile off-cuts recycled prior to the show between July 11 and 17 while 12,884m2 (87.3%) was from tiles dismantled after the show, all in all saving contractors (whom Armstrong does not charge for the service) more than £10,000 in landfill and skip hire tax. In terms of environmental impact, as well as the 14,769m2 diverted from landfill, this year’s scheme saved more than 73 tonnes of virgin raw material, more than 20,000 kWh energy, more than 36,000 CO2 equivalent greenhouse gasses, and more than 251,000 litres of potable water. The tiles for recycling (Dune Supreme and Fine Fissured) were collected in bags and stored in the exhibition hall then returned on nine trucks to Armstrong’s production facility in Gateshead for recycling back into the mix with the help of logistics company and fork lift operators Ceva Showfreight, specialist waste management and cleaning contractors Sagum Events and the Southampton branch of specialist distributor SIG Interiors. The corporate hospitality and business chalets, which are used by such prestigious exhibitors as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Rolls Royce, typically take five weeks to build and fit out and one week to dismantle. Oliver Newin, who oversaw the recycling and environmental element of the show, which prides itself on its green philosophy, said: “We encourage people to use Armstrong because of their recycling capabilities and this year it went very well.” Roy Smith, Armstrong’s recycling sales development manager, added: “Our recycling scheme was very well received by the contractors on site. I feel from them it is now an expected part of the show.” Armstrong was first brought in to recycle its suspended ceilings at the 2008 airshow by the event’s largest independent chalet fitting contractor SDD I GES and back then saved 2,600m2 (or 10 tonnes) from landfill. The ceiling tiles recycled from this year’s Farnborough airshow help to bring the total amount of recycling by Armstrong since 2009 to more than 500,000m2. Armstrong pioneered ceiling recycling in the UK in 2003 and since then the programme has evolved to include all mineral tiles, no minimum quantities, a growing network of “Green Omega” installers and partnerships with national distributors to further support customers’ local recycling requirements. Apparent Increase in First-Time Buyers

The building design and construction industries in this country will need to put up with the evidence that more people than ever before are committing to buying a property for the first time in 2017. The Connells Survey and Valuation data has shown that despite the difficulties faced by many people today and the fluctuations of the housing market, the fact of the matter is that more and more people are deciding to buy a home for the first time this year than they did in 2016. For example,  it has been demonstrated that 34 per cent of the activity on the housing market is due to the bustling of first-time buyers, as compared to the previous year when it was only leveled at 25 per cent in 2016. Similarly, more have been shown to sell property this year: the figures indicate a 5 per cent increase in this compared to the previous year which was found to be at 21 per cent overall. What this indicates to someone like John Bagshaw of Connells Survey and Valuation is that more and more people are committing to buying up property for their private selves than in the previous year. Mister Bagshaw puts this down to greater job opportunities being offered to people that enable them to consider the private housing market, whilst another cause of this is claimed to be the fact that the rise in wages to 3 per cent overall is an incentive for making people want to buy property for the first time. In any case, this is clearly signaled to be a wake-up call to the building, design and construction industries to build more homes and develop on greater areas of land than ever before in order to cope with the increasing demands of first-time buyers. Indeed, many of these tend to be in the younger age range and are desirous of starting families in their new homes: greater amounts of bedrooms and investment therefore need to be considered.

UCLan Proclaims the Future of Social Space Planning

The University of Central Lancashire (also known in more trendy quarters of this country as the UCLan) is to witness a major new property and development progression as it commits towards a program designed to create new social space for its lucky students worth in the range of £8.15 million. In conjunction with the faculty’s intentions to refurbish and improve itself over the next year by devoting up to £200 million towards rebuilding parts of the faculty, this particular improvement to the campus will be commissioned to Conlon Construction. This particular company, which has its footing in the area of Preston, will ensure that work is completed to the best of their ability and is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year. Indeed, Conlon Construction do not lie around, since last week on the 6th February they declared the project open and ready to go by putting the first shovelful of work towards the project. The Greenbank and Harrington site has already witnessed some major developments and progress has been made already by Conlon Construction so that university planners and delegates are confident that the independent contractor will deliver the space on time and on budget. In total, work on the two sites (which also include significant rebuilding along the Foster location of the building area) will necessitate amounts of concrete worth up to 90 individual piles as well as up to 150 tons of steel material. With all of this in mind, it is clear that Conlon Construction will also need to be good in order to ensure the logistical transportation and delivery of the materials onto the site. Members of UCLan have expressed their confidence in Conlon Construction  and their belief that the company will be able to aid them in making their refurbishment plans come true and get delivered to them on time and within budget.

Closures Over the Weekend Along the A556

Passengers and travelers were reminded that there will be several closures along several junctions that might have a significant impact on their journeys and are therefore encouraged to check the road network websites for details, diversions and alternative routes that have been put into place in order to ease the concerns that they might have as much as possible and in order to ensure that they arrive wherever they want to go on time and with as little hassle or disruption to them as possible. Indeed, the Highways England team has announced that there will be several closures during the next following weekends, which will include the closing of junctions 7,8 (M56) as well as junction 19 along the M6. These will take place from February the 17th until the morning of the 20th, meaning that alternative routes will need to be sought by those that might be affected. Whilst this may cause some disruption, it is undoubtedly essential that these be implemented so as to allow the ambitious Knutsford-Bowden installation of an all-new dual carriageway to be built in and set to be up and running as soon as possible for those that will benefit the most from it. Indeed, this is an ambitious building design and construction effort from Highways England, and the project itself is estimated to be worth a rather staggering £192 million. Indeed, Mister Paul Hampson of Highways England has also explained that careful and considered diversion have been put into place for the inconvenience this may cause to some passengers travelling along the A556 around the time of the closures. Furthermore, Paul Hampson suggests that those traveling on the road to Manchester Airport during those weekend periods ought to look carefully at the alternative routes and networks that they can take to get there, since those wanting to catch planes on time will undoubtedly be well advised to consider the impact the disruptions could have on the amount of time that they have to catch their flights.

County Contractors Have Much to Celebrate

In an age of economic uncertainty, it is more than ever lovely to read about success stories and a South Western building design and construction company known as County Contractors feature today as this day’s happy story amidst all the doom and gloom of post-Brexit Britain. Indeed, the firm has been blessed with being able to celebrate its 40th year in existence in style, since the annual turnout that they have made has been greater than ever, totaling a golden £56 million between 2015 and 2016. This is excellent but not very surprising news considering the hard work that the firm has been undertaking for so long all year, and County Contractors have been on the front line of many of the most interesting and lucrative building developments in recent times. For example, since their inception in 1976 they have worked on a number of exciting construction products that have included redevelopments of such things as luxury hotels, accommodation outlets and top of the range retail outlets. Recently, they carried out a series of repairs and plans to renovate the luxurious Lancaster Hotel in the city of London: this involved the rebuilding of more than 400 accommodation rooms and the contract was covered at a staggering £39 million. Now, thanks to County Contractors’ hard and diligent work, the 18-month project is nearing the end of the race and will soon be finished and available to the public. In addition to this, County Contractors also continue the devotion of many building industries towards charities that try and improve the lives of the vulnerable and the down-trodden. In County Contractors’ case, their consistent and enthusiastic support towards Guide Dogs and Cancer Research UK was proven when they succeeded in aiding them to total a raised funding of no less than £48,000 which they achieved by performing a charity bike ride. Ding ding!

An exciting location in Shoreham-by-Sea in the county of West Sussex in the southern coastal regions of the United Kingdom is set to pave the way for the future of home manufacturing in the British Isles. With this sort of showroom ethos to the company in place, customers are able to have a much better idea and think about the kind of property that they are actually after and it is evident that the technology used by Futureform is the latest and most revolutionary of its kind so far to have been released before the property and building development sector.
