Building a career in a male-dominated industry – female construction workers are keen to break the mold

In an industry that has traditionally been predominantly dominated by men, Cannock-based housebuilder Jessup Partnerships is looking to encourage talented women into the workforce and inspire other women to consider a career in construction. Site Manager, Kirsty Lynch, 50, who is originally from Edinburgh worked at Jessup five years ago and recently returned as Site Manager at the housebuilder’s Lower Valley Road development in Dudley. Kirsty previously worked in Health and Social Care for over 20 years, however, decided to take the plunge into the construction industry in her 40s. Kirsty said: “After a long and successful career in Health and Social Care, I decided I needed a new challenge so, I retrained, and gained the necessary qualifications for site management. “I applied for around 500 jobs to get myself onto site- having no trade background and being female, I did not feel like I was taken seriously. After a while, I eventually obtained a role, but I had to travel around 600 miles a week for work. This position was for a Trainee Assistant Site Manager which led to me being promoted to Assistant Site Manager within two years. “I’ve had to work incredibly hard to prove myself. Being a woman brings a different dynamic to a construction site. For the most part, all the sub-contractors, the supply chain and the community, embrace and support my role, however a minority have to be challenged with education and training. Equality and diversity are the starting points ensuring we have equal rights such as pay, career progression and a voice. “This journey has not always been easy, near impossible at times, with archaic and outdated attitudes. Like all good career paths if you want something you have to work at it. Having a supportive employer makes a massive difference, one who supports and embraces the diversity we bring to the role. Changing the rhetoric, change the perspective.” The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that in Q4 of 2022, 2,171,000 people in the UK worked in construction1. Out of those people, just 321,000, 14.7 per cent, were women2. With a number of female employees already in a range of roles across the company, the developer is keen to break the stereotype around women working in construction. Michelle Howe, who joined Jessup Partnerships in 2022 as Health and Safety Advisor, previously worked for a large precast concrete manufacturer as a Health and Safety Co-ordinator. Michelle, who works on sites across the West Midlands said: “Since joining Jessup, I have felt well-supported in my career progression and have received the relevant training to enable my transition from manufacturing to construction.  “I feel well supported by my manager and the site teams that I work with on a daily basis, and my opinions are listened to and valued. I have never felt anything other than welcomed and accepted by the site personnel. “If I could give any advice to women thinking about starting a career in construction, I would tell them that they absolutely should pursue it. I think that working in construction is far more inclusive than it was five years ago, and there are now a lot more women actually working on site.” Chris Timmins, Managing Director at Jessup, said: “We are extremely proud to be part of the collective effort to drive more women into the construction industry. “We hope we can inspire more women to break the stereotype and build a career in construction.” Watch Jessup’s International Women’s Day 2023 video below. Deanestor Secures Record £24m of New Orders and Announces Strong Financial Performance

Deanestor, one of the UK’s leading furniture and fitout specialists, has announced a record order intake of around £24m in the last six months. The business is now anticipating its highest ever turnover in 2023, which is projected to rise to £22m. This will be an increase of £2.8m compared to last year. Since the start of 2022, production volumes have continued to rise steadily as Deanestor’s factories returned to pre-pandemic levels of turnover and profit. Turnover in 2022 increased sharply by 35 per cent to £19.2m in comparison with 2021. The record intake is for fitout projects for both new and long-standing repeat clients and contractors and are across a diverse range of markets from build-to-rent and student living in the private sector, to healthcare and education. The latest orders include: William Tonkinson, Managing Director of Deanestor, said, “Towards the end of 2022 and at the start of this year, we have seen our highest ever order intake. Confidence has definitely returned. Build-to-rent is extremely buoyant, and the student living and education sectors remain strong. We are also seeing an increase in the size of our projects for residential schemes as well as a trend for taller buildings to deliver more homes for rent.” “Enquiries remain at healthy levels, and we now have a record quote book which is another very positive economic indicator.” “The acute challenges in labour and materials costs after the pandemic have now stabilised and with such a strong order pipeline, we expect our growth to continue for the next 24 months and beyond. We are creating around 12 new jobs this year to support our growth.” Deanestor’s Scottish business is based in Fife and continues to perform well. It has recently been awarded its largest education contract to date – a £5m project for BAM to manufacture furniture and fitout two high schools on the Dunfermline Learning Campus. Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the UK’s leading property provider dedicated to the growth of the science and technology sector support the Aston University 2030 Strategy growth plans within the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter. Leaders from Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech, the Joint Venture partnership between Bruntwood and Legal & General, formalised the MoU today (Wednesday 15 March) at the major international property conference MIPIM held in France at an event involving leading infrastructure businesses, investors and government agencies. The MoU includes a commitment to enhance Birmingham’s Knowledge Quarter through jointdevelopments focused on creating a world-class innovation district within the city. More specifically, Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech will establish a Joint Venture that supports the University’s development plans as it seeks to establish a leading science, technology and enterprise precinct with industry and businesses embedded on campus to drive socio-economic transformations in the city.  The MoU will support the strategic objectives outlined in Aston University’s 2030 Strategy, which include elevating ambition through sustainable growth, creating unique value propositions for its beneficiaries, leveraging place and space, building a digital enterprise, and transforming businesses and communities the University serves. The partnership builds upon the pledge made by Exec Chair Chris Oglesby at last year’s Commonwealth Games to invest £1bn in the city over the next decade, and will draw on Bruntwood SciTech’s expertise in developing knowledge economies and stimulating investment in an £850m portfolio of 11 regional hubs across the UK. Having greater say over local transport, skills and housing will ultimately lead to more focused spending, which can only benefit investment in local communities – be that infrastructure-led or otherwise. Panthera Group was awarded the hoarding contract to secure the site for the installation of a 60ft Damian Hirst sculpture at the Greenwich Peninsula by the Thames in London. Following in the footsteps of Venice and Las Vegas, the ‘Demon with Bowl’ bronze sculpture is being brought to South East London as part of the developer’s vision to make the area the capital’s most boldly modern landscape. Prior to the installation, Panthera Group was contracted to supply and erect 151m of net zero carbon EnviroHoard® 2.4 to the perimeter of the area to ensure a safe working site for contractors and to protect the public from the works. A further 30m length of the sustainable hoarding was installed round the compound area. Both lengths feature environmentally-friendly, custom printed graphics designed to keep the public informed of the transformation of the area. The whole of North Greenwich is being transformed with housing, businesses and a design centre which has a mission to bring together culture, community, design and architecture to create a vibrant 21st Century Space. The site is adjacent to Silvertown Tunnel construction project designed to ease traffic flow in the locality. EnviroHoard® from Panthera Group has also been used to secure the boundary of that ongoing project. Liverpool approves final phase of Welsh Streets project

Liverpool City Council has approved plans, submitted by build to rent provider Placefirst, for the final phase of its Welsh Streets neighbourhood. This comes shortly after The Welsh Streets was named as Housing Development of the Year at the Insider North West Residential Property Awards in January. The development will deliver a terrace of 13 new homes, including a mix of three-bedroom family homes and apartments. Three of the properties will be designed to be fully wheelchair accessible and the scheme will also include a new community hub where Placefirst’s dedicated resident services manager will be based. Designed by MBED Architects, Phase 6 will create a traditional terrace that has been carefully considered to be in-keeping with the existing street scene and character of the surrounding area, adding to the high-quality, energy efficient homes Placefirst has created to date. Other members of the team include Curtins (engineers) and WSP (on planning). Placefirst worked closely with Liverpool City Council on the plans to bring the Welsh Streets land situated between High Park Street, Wynnstay Street and Kelvin Grove forward. The new accessible community hub will allow Placefirst to continue its focus on community engagement initiatives, with a strong on site presence. With Phase 6, the Welsh Streets neighbourhood will total just under 300 single-family BTR homes, a mix of refurbished and new build. Placefirst has invested over £40m into the project to date, with residents contributing an annual £1.7m spend to the local economy. Construction on the final phase will commence later this year. Stepnell is preparing to start construction work to transform the Northampton historic market square. West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) is working with the construction firm to carry out a multi-million-pound redevelopment of the area,. Prior to construction works starting, investigations had to take place to identify any potential risks and define clear strategies to address them. WNC and Stepnell have completed ground investigations in Northampton using Danaher Walsh and a leading geotechnical firm. This involved digging 15 trial holes and 12 boreholes in locations identified by the project team over a four-week period. The area must be carefully excavated, taking, and investigating samples that will inform how the market square is transformed. This is in addition to the ground investigations completed during the design development stage. While this work has been ongoing an archaeologist has been ensuring the redevelopment does not cause harm to potential archaeology in the ground. “This is an important project in the transformation and regeneration of the town centre, the market square is a site of historical significance, so it is vital that the essential investigations are carried out to ensure that works are delivered to the highest standard. With the necessary preparation works underway we look forward the next stage of the construction process that will be intensifying in the coming weeks,” said Cllr Dan Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration and Growth. Following extensive research, the only viable location for the market to be temporarily relocated to while the extensive construction takes place was Commercial St Car Park, as other areas in the town, including Abington St which is due to begin works on the new public realm later this year, are due to be transformed in the coming months as part of the wider town regeneration. GLP delivers strong operational performance in 2022 across key sectors

GLP announced strong 2022 operational results across its businesses in logistics real estate, data centers, renewable energy and related technologies. Key highlights include: Ming Mei, Co-founder and CEO of GLP said: “GLP delivered strong operating performance across its global business in 2022 and is well-positioned for the year ahead. We are focused on scaling our data center and renewable energy business and continue to grow our core logistics business to meet sustained customer demand which has resulted in record leasing activity and an active development market. Sustainability continues to be top of mind as we design, build and operate our assets with environmental performance and innovation to minimize carbon emissions as well as support our customers’ sustainability performance targets.” Logistics In 2022, logistics real estate fundamentals remained resilient as demand for modern logistics facilities increased, driven by global supply chain shifts and growing domestic consumption met by undersupply in key markets. GLP expanded its logistics real estate footprint to 83 million square meters (“SQM”) in 2022, completing 3 million SQM of developments and commencing 3.4 million SQM  of new developments. A total of 27 million SQM of real estate was leased globally – a 12% yoy increase with a group lease ratio of 92%. GLP continues to develop and build its logistics supply chain ecosystem through scaling its cold storage business. The cold chain market is expected to grow with the surge in demand for longer shelf-life and temperature-controlled logistics within the pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, and beverage sectors. As of 2022, GLP delivered over 3 million SQM of cold storage space across our markets in Asia, Europe and the Americas and continues to identify opportunities to invest in this complementary sector. GLP continues to expand its global customer base, partnering with customers to support their cross-border expansion plans as they enter and grow in new markets. Approximately 21% of GLP’s total net leasable area is let to global customers who utilize GLP facilities in more than one country, underpinned by sectors with strong demand for international growth such as e-commerce and express delivery services. GLP’s modern logistics facilities and value-adding property management services continue to attract repeat customers with steady customer lease renewals. Data Centers GLP launched its data center business in 2018 and aims to deliver efficient and resilient IT load capacity safely and securely to its customers across the globe. Data center fundamentals remain strong with rising demand for local hyperscale data center facilities to support digitization trends such as AI, IoT and cloud services across industries. GLP is currently one of the leading independent data center operators in China with assets that will deliver approximately 1,400 MW of IT load capacity upon completion. During the year, GLP also secured the largest built-to-suit data center in China for a leading domestic internet company. To support sustainable growth of the industry, 100% of new GLP data centers in China are built to meet GB-A/T3+ standards and ODCC certifications. In 2022, GLP announced plans to enter Japan’s data center market, targeting to invest more than $12 billion over the next five years to achieve 900 MW of power capacity.  GLP has since made significant progress on seven development assets in Japan, London and Brazil, including securing prime sites for future data center campus developments in the Tokyo and Kansai regions which will provide approximately 600 MW of IT load. GLP expects to break ground on its first Japan data center campus in Greater Tokyo in 2023, with the first building expected to be ready for service from 2024. Renewable Energy GLP continues to aid the global energy transition and meet clean energy demand by operating and developing assets across the renewable energy value chain including solar energy, wind energy and energy storage solutions. As of December 2022, GLP reached 700 MW of solar energy capacity from onsite solar panels installed across GLP and third-party properties in Asia, Europe and the Americas, resulting in a 68% yoy increase in total solar capacity. In 2020, GLP launched a joint venture with Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (“CATL”), the world’s leading battery provider and the largest maker of electric vehicle (“EV”) batteries to create a new platform aimed at expanding the use of new energy through energy-as-a-service offerings to advance sustainability in logistics and transportation. As of 2022, GCTL has rolled out five battery swap stations for heavy duty vehicles with 15 additional stations in the pipeline; each station services more than 150 vehicles per day.  Sustainability GLP continues to make progress on its ESG commitments and targets with its focus on reducing carbon emissions from development and operations as well as supporting customers to meet their sustainability performance targets. We are measuring embodied carbon in our developments through life cycle assessments which help us better understand our impact and identify localized reduction opportunities during design and construction. GLP Shanghai Baoshan Park received GLP’s first LEED EBOM Platinum certification and is one of the first logistics projects in China to receive this level of certification. Carbon emissions in the park were reduced by 2,500 tons of CO2e and the park has achieved carbon neutral operations. GLP achieved approximately 150 new green building and energy certifications last year to reach 480 certifications as part of its 2022 global commitment to build to globally recognized green certification standards. The company maintained its ‘Low’ risk rating and is a top ESG performer by Sustainalytics which measures a company’s exposure and management of industry specific material ESG risks.
