Winvic Secures Place on Warwickshire County Council Framework Contract for Highways, Structural and Civils Works

Winvic Secures Place on Warwickshire County Council Framework Contract for Highways, Structural and Civils Works

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects has been awarded a place on another public sector framework. The company has been selected as a contractor for Lot 5 of the Warwickshire County Council (WCC) Framework Contract for the Provision of Engineering and Construction Works. Work under Lot 5 of the Framework will typically involve the construction – or the design and construction – of major highway, structural and other civil engineering works, including agricultural buildings and waste management site works. As well as operational competences, Health and Safety (H&S) and design credentials will be a key focus. Winvic’s exemplary safety record for its highways works delivery, it’s robust H&S cultural change programme – Doing It Right – as well as its tried and tested digital design and Net Zero construction capabilities are all substantial merits which helped the company to secure the Framework place.  Winvic’s team will initially spend time detailing compliance and operation processes and preparing for future projects. Winvic’s Social Value team will also be strategising and planning to deliver activities against the Themes, Outcomes and Measures (TOMs) set out by WCC. Rob Cook, Director of Civils and Infrastructure at Winvic, said: “As always, the Winvic team worked exceptionally hard to demonstrate our credentials in the tender for Lot 5 of Warwickshire County Council’s Highways Framework and we’re delighted to be working with another county council. We have collaborated with the local authority previously when delivering projects within their boundaries and we’ll now build on that already strong relationship.” “We’re delighted that WCC share our vision of putting the safety of the public and our workforce first, while balancing the speed of operations with budgets, and we aim to maintain our highways works zero per cent accident rate. Plus, with our long-standing commitments to social value, sustainability and innovation, we’re well placed to drive forward-thinking programmes, environmentally focused and Net Zero schemes that really make a difference to local people. The whole team is looking forward to delivering their first project under the highways Framework in Warwickshire.” For more information on Winvic, the company’s latest project news and job vacancies please visit www.winvic.co.uk. Walsall College Students Build on Classroom Learning with Winvic Enrichment Programme

Walsall College Students Build on Classroom Learning with Winvic Enrichment Programme

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of private and public sector construction and civil engineering projects has given 16 Design, Surveying and Planning T-Level students from Walsall College hands on experience at three sites as part of the Winvic Enrichment Programme. Over a three-week period, the students spent a total of six days across three projects. Kent St Baths is a 406 apartment build-to-rent scheme in the centre of Birmingham being delivered for Edmond De Rothchild and Stoford’s Redditch Gateway is an industrial project where two facilities are being constructed. West Midlands Interchange is a 734-acre site where civils and infrastructure works have recently commenced for Oxford Properties Group and Logistics Capital Partners. The six days of on-site education not only upskilled and improved the confidence of students in further education, but it also contributes to the three projects’ social value commitments and Walsall College’s 35-hour enrichment activity aims. In total the sessions have provided 465 enrichment activity hours. Sessions in the Winvic Enrichment Programme have been designed to showcase several elements of a construction project, but they can also be tailored to meet the needs of each cohort and their course subject. Sessions enjoyed by Walsall College students included digital engineering, earthworks, planning, quantity surveying, CV writing, mental health and fairness, inclusion and respect (FIR); they were given activities to complete, site tours, got hands on and up close with various construction processes and were encouraged to ask questions at any time. The feedback received from the students and tutors was outstanding and a number of students contacted Winvic after the programme to express their thanks. One said: “I enjoyed meeting the QS and doing the task he provided us. I also enjoyed seeing how tasks are done and how knowledgeable the site team are and how they treat the site with respect and care.” Another student emailed: “I feel like I have learnt a lot in the past 6 days we’ve had on the different sites. I liked being able to meet new people and get their advice and opinions on the different sectors of the industry. I’ve definitely taken in a lot of information from everyone there and I think the thing that will stick the most is how you can always work your way up in the industry as long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort in.” “These 6 days gave me real experience and understanding of different processes in construction,” said another T-Level student. “Thank you to all the professionals who allocated time for us during their working day and showed us and told us about their tasks at construction sites, the work process, what difficulties they encountered, and what experience they had. It was very informative to listen to and ask each of the professionals questions.” The Programme has led to more engagement in the coming weeks including the provision of on-site block placements for four students; the new HTQ Level 4 in Construction Management for England students will also be visiting Crown Place Birmingham – Crown Student Living’s Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) project comprising 814 beds – for a bespoke one day site visit. Furthermore, Winvic collaborated with Walsall College over the summer to provide Continued Professional Development (CPD) training to two tutors, on site at IM Properties’ Peddimore industrial project, supporting them to gain knowledge about the very latest construction technologies, materials and methods of construction. Kayleigh Merritt, Winvic’s Talent Development Manager, commented: “This is the fourth time we have delivered an Enrichment Programme to students, and it has been wonderful to hear how much the students enjoyed each session and how the experience opened their eyes to different roles. Because we have a large number of projects in and around Birmingham, the students were able to visit projects in our three key sectors – multi-room, industrial and civils and infrastructure – and that was an added bonus to be able to show them even more than one site could offer. It’s no small task to organise a six-day programme so I’d like to thank our site teams and the numerous subcontract partners who contributed to providing this engaging learning experience.”    Martin Lake, Lecturer in Advanced Construction at Walsall College, said: “We would like to thank Winvic’s talent and site teams for providing an excellent experience for our students and ourselves. A number of students have expressed that the induction placements provided an excellent insight into different sectors within the industry and have helped shape their future career choices.” For more details on the Winvic Enrichment Programme, please contact traning@winvic.co.uk. Winvic Commences Groundworks for 367-bed Purpose Built Student Accommodation Project in Bristol for Madison Cairn

Winvic Commences Groundworks for 367-bed Purpose Built Student Accommodation Project in Bristol for Madison Cairn

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, has been awarded a Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) scheme by Madison Cairn. After successfully completing the initial enabling works and piling operations, Winvic now commences the groundworks, which comprise under slab drainage and ducts works and installation of concrete pile caps, beams, ring beams and the ground floor slab. The project comprising 367 studios and shared rooms is part of the second phase of Redcliff Quarter, located on the corner of St Thomas Street and Cross Street in Bristol, ten-minute walk from the University of Bristol’s main campus. The concrete frame programme begins in April. It will climb to 12 storeys and the building form is predominantly an L shape to accommodate a 2,700 sq ft, landscaped first floor communal roof garden terrace to the rear. The roof at level 12 has been designed as a blue roof to provide the building with the function of water attenuation.  When complete there will be three seven-bed cluster rooms, 16 six-bed cluster rooms, 11 threedios, 11 twodios, 176 studios and 19 accessible rooms. 4,600 sq ft of flexible communal spaces, ancillary accommodation and storage for 184 cycles will also be found on the ground floor. Handover is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The project completes the wider urban block, which it has been designed to complement, and adjoins a new build-to-rent (BTR) project on two elevations. The construction works will be programmed to coordinate with this scheme that Winvic began this BTR for Madison Cairn in September 2022 and will complete in 2025. A number of underground services will be installed and diverted as part of the project and the student accommodation will be connected to the Bristol Heating Network. The Bristol Byzantine style has inspired the external aesthetic along with the prevailing use of brick and stone and metal cladding in the area. Red and black bricks will be used on the façade alongside a contrast of fluted and flat glass reinforced concrete (GRC) and metalwork cladding.  Mark Jones, Winvic’s Director of Multi-room, said: “We’re delighted Madison Cairn has selected us to partner on this scheme. This repeat business is a testament to strong collaboration and the partnership that we have built with this client. Both projects come with their own challenges and deadlines, with this site being particularly constrained on logistics – due to the interface of the adjoining buildings – and the limit space on this city centre location. Nevertheless, the Winvic team appointed to the Redcliff Quarter student accommodation project have a wealth of experience and we are looking forward to safe delivery through to 2025.”   Aneil Handa, Principle at Madison Cairn, said: “This will be one of Bristol’s most sustainable and high-quality student accommodation schemes, which has been designed by working in conjunction with Bristol City Council and the local community. This is the second project that we are working on with Winvic Construction, and we are excited to build upon our relationship in a partnership approach.” For more information on Winvic, the company’s latest project news and job vacancies please visit www.winvic.co.uk. Winvic Starts 2023 on a High, Surpassing Milestones at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton

Winvic Starts 2023 on a High, Surpassing Milestones at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects is celebrating a successful year of delivery with client SEGRO. Development of the new state-of-the-art multi-modal logistics hub in Northampton commenced in early 2021. Winvic has since surpassed a number of key milestones at the 450-acre site and remains on course for completion. SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton is expected to create around 7,500 new jobs. It comprises a five million square feet modern, warehousing and logistics hub and a dedicated 35-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI). Winvic is also delivering significant highways works as part of the project. Improvements to M1 Junction 15, improving local access and traffic flow, have reached practical completion after 18 months, while ongoing works – being delivered in partnership with National Highways, Network Rail and local authorities – to the A508, A45 and to construct the Roade village bypass will continue until the beginning of 2024. Roade Bypass is a new 2.5km single carriageway that includes the construction of a new road bridge across the West Coast Main Line and three roundabouts. The 48 metre steel bridge beams totalling 264 tonnes were lifted into place by Winvic in September. Construction of the deck, waterproofing and surfacing will continue through the Winter. The Roade bypass and roundabout works are anticipated to be complete at the beginning of 2024. Construction of the 170-metre reinforced concrete tunnel, which will screen the trains after departing from the terminal, has also been completed along with the terminal buildings. The final reinforced concrete slab to create the intermodal and HGV terminal was poured in November – the last of the 86 slabs totalling 22,000 m3. The programme for the rail terminal is on schedule to be fully operational by Easter 2024. The SRFI will connect to the West Coast Mainline via the Northampton loop line and will encourage the increase of sustainable movement of freight by rail. On-site rail works will continue through the winter period and Network Rail will be working on-site to connect the Northampton loop to the mainline. Over 50 per cent of the development plateaus for seven large warehouse units, ranging in size from 530,000 square feet to 1.2 million square feet, have been completed this year. Winvic will recommence earthworks in Spring 2023 and complete the remaining plateaus by the end of 2023. When the Park is fully complete, it will include over 80 acres of parkland and amenity grassland, 18km of footpaths, 20km of hedgerows and the planting of 60,000 new trees. Furthermore, the primary sub-station works are complete and will be energised in the Winter, providing power to the scheme as a whole and contributing to the project’s sustainability credentials. SEGRO has been working alongside local council and community partners to deliver an employment and skills programme that provides training and employment opportunities for members of the local community. This forms part of a newly launched Community Investment Plan for the region. Last month, a community environmental project completed, which involved reinvigorating outdoor community space and enhancing biodiversity and wellbeing. Winvic shares SEGRO’s commitment to adding lasting value into the communities in which it works and works with its supply chain to help clients meet their aims. Rob Cook, Head of Civils and Infrastructure at Winvic Construction, said: “Our one-team approach to the complex programming for earthworks, rail, a covered tunnel structure and significant highways reconfiguration works has enabled us to meet – or surpass – all the key milestones. I’d like to thank our team for their hard work at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton through last year and I hope they have returned from the Christmas break rested and proud that we’re right on schedule. “This multi-modal logistics hub is crucial for meeting the demands of distribution in a sustainable, future-proofed way. And working with SEGRO, local councils and community partners we’re helping to deliver skills and employment opportunities to local people. We look forward to continuing our partnership with SEGRO at the Northampton site and East Midlands Gateway to successful completions and beyond.” Andrew Pilsworth, Managing Director, National Logistics at SEGRO, said: “Developments such as SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton represent critical pieces of national infrastructure in the heart of the UK, playing an invaluable role in storing and transporting goods and services all over the UK in an efficient and sustainable way. We are making excellent progress are pleased to be able to continue development at pace despite the current economic uncertainty.” For more information on Winvic, the company’s latest project news and job vacancies please visit www.winvic.co.uk. Winvic invites industry professionals to register for free trial of new revolutionary construction carbon calculator

Winvic invites industry professionals to register for free trial of new revolutionary construction carbon calculator

ASPEC – AI System for Predicting Embodied Carbon in Construction – Website Launches as Innovate UK Funding Period Concludes Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, and its partners in a cross-sector multidisciplinary research group is inviting people in the construction industry to register their interest to access a new embodied carbon analytics AI system. Professionals should visit www.carboncalculated.co.uk to join the mailing list and they will be able to access a free trial of ASPEC – which stands for AI System for Predicting Embodied Carbon in Construction – towards the end of the year. Winvic, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), and Costain make up the consortium that was awarded £800,000 funding by Innovate UK in November 2020 to create a fit-for-purpose technology solution to help drive down industry carbon emissions and meet government’s green targets. The ASPEC website homepage, where professionals can register for the free trial Users will be able to upload a 3D BIM file – a Revit model – to the revolutionary web-based system and it will calculate the building or infrastructure project’s carbon output within minutes. Materials can then be altered within ASPEC to directly affect the real-time calculations of the carbon data – this allows construction schemes to be designed in a ‘green first’, non-time-consuming approach for the very first time. A short video about ASPEC can be found on the brand’s YouTube channel. ASPEC is integrated with the Government Green House Gas conversion factors, Inventory of Carbon and Energy (ICE) and the Environment Agency (EA), making it the largest database of environmental construction data in the world. Nevertheless, the system also allows users to upload their own materials databases which will work alongside the data points already available. Winvic and its research group partners have also been engaging with supply chains and other stakeholders throughout the two-year ASPEC project and 360-degree feedback has been employed to ensure the tool is user friendly and functional.       Please see editor’s notes for caption to image of ASPEC The system will help to propel contractors and material manufacturing firms to meet the UK government target to remove 10MT of carbon dioxide by 2030. Furthermore, a 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions has been set through the Construction 2025 strategy and the target for 2050 is to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. Winvic Digital Engineering Manager and ASPEC project lead, Morgan Hambling, commented: “When we started this Innovate UK funded project two years ago, embodied construction calculation methods were onerous at best and there was simply no efficient way for design teams to proactively reduce the carbon footprint of projects. Therefore, ASPEC is transformational for the industry as contractors, consultants and material manufacturers can at last sit in the driving seat with this fit-for-purpose cloud-based tool. “With the Innovate UK two-year funding period now over and development in its final stages, we’re now inviting people to visit the ASPEC website to register their interest. We’re looking for professionals to get hands on in a free trial towards the end of the year – this is just the beginning, where we can all make the real impact that is required to meet client and building occupier needs as well as important government and industry targets.”      For more information on Winvic, the company’s latest project news and job vacancies please visit www.winvic.co.uk. Winvic awarded emergency bridge repair project under national highways SDF

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, has been given its first contract within National Highways’ new Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF). Routine investigations to the M62 Ouse Bridge, located between Goole and Howden in Yorkshire – or between junctions 36 and 37 of the M62 – identified a partial failure of a joint on the eastbound carriageway. Therefore, Winvic has been appointed as one of the organisations on the SDF undertaking temporary and then permanent repairs on the structure and highway. It was discovered that increased vibration from traffic had started to damage the concrete under lane three and a bridge joint, which allows the carriageway to expand and contract with the weather. A contraflow was immediately put into place, reducing traffic on the eastbound carriage to one lane, to allow temporary works to begin, while a series of overnight road closures during the week commencing 13 June facilitated a second eastbound traffic lane to open on Saturday 18 June minimising disruption to road users. Winvic installed temporary metal bridging plates across parts of the eastbound carriageway, which enabled a further eastbound lane and the eastbound exit slip road at junction 37 to be reopened on Friday 8 July.   Winvic has employed its ‘one-team’ approach and is working closely with a number of National Highways project partners; Jacobs is designing the repairs, traffic management is being led by Amey and Winvic, along with specialist Contractor VSL, is heading the joint repair and replacement. Together the companies are currently working on the complex design process required to replace all eight joints across both carriageways towards a solution that reduces the need for full closures in the future as much as possible. Temporary bridging plates have been installed over the damaged bridge joints as a temporary mitigation measure, and a second set will be added this autumn. The two most critically damaged joints on the eastbound carriageway will be replaced by spring 2023 and the project will be fully complete in Autumn 2023. Winvic won its place on the National Highways SDF in September, along with 49 other contractors that will deliver £3.6 billion of road renewal works on England’s motorways and trunk roads over the next six years. Rob Cook, Winvic’s Director of Civils and Infrastructure, commented: “We have been working hard with National Highways and the Yorkshire North East region to mobilise the Scheme Delivery Framework since we were awarded our place on it in September, so we were able to mobilise rapidly on this project on the M62 Ouse Bridge to begin the necessary immediate temporary works. We put multiple interfaces in place with the National Highway team and the other project partners, so we could work as one-team, towards one-goal with safety as the ultimate priority. “The surfacing and bridging plate works have met programme expectations, meaning road users have been able to go back to using multiple carriageways and the programme is in place to install more plates this Autumn; while the priority always must be safety, it’s also crucial that disruptions to people’s journeys is minimised as quickly as possible and negate the need for full road closures as much as possible. Once the permanent solution has been fully designed and  fabricated, we will undertake these permanent works, facilitating the long-term safe use of the Ouse Bridge.”  Members of the public can keep up to date about the project and any related traffic disruption, by visiting https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/yorkshire-and-north-east/m62-ouse-bridge/.  Phil Jepps, National Highways Programme Delivery Manager, added: “The temporary repair work around the bridge joint and the permanent replacement of all eight joints on the Ouse Bridge is a very complex project. To complete this as quickly, safely and effectively as possible, it’s important we work with outstanding partners who share our commitment to working towards the highest possible standards. We would like to thank Winvic and our other partners on the Scheme Delivery Framework for their ongoing support to keep traffic moving safely while completing the vital resurfacing and bridging plate work.” For more information on essential safety work taking place on Ouse Bridge, visit the National Highways dedicated web page for the bridge https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-roads/yorkshire-and-north-east/m62-ouse-bridge/ or follow National Highways Yorkshire on Facebook. Winvic Successfully Installs New Steel Arch Footbridge Over the A38 Near Sutton Coldfield

A38 opened 12 hours earlier than scheduled Between Friday 22 and Sunday 24 July, Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading Main Contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, erected a new pedestrian bridge over the A38 as part of its Peddimore project, being delivered for IM Properties. IM Properties is Birmingham City Council’s development partner for the first phase of Peddimore, which comprises all infrastructure works and the development of 37-hectares of the 71-hectare site. The civils and infrastructure project at Minworth, close to Sutton Coldfield, is to enable a major employment park. The steel tied arch footbridge has a 60-metre span, is 6.5 metres wide and the arch peaks at 20 metres above the highway. It was manufactured off site and then transported to Minworth in three deck sections and three arch sections approximately four weeks ago. It was assembled in an off-line area adjacent to the new 75 metre diameter roundabout that Winvic has also been constructing as part of the scheme. The roundabout and bridge can be seen on the Peddimore Winvic Live feed and a video of the weekend installation can be found on Winvic’s YouTube. On the morning of Friday 22, the Winvic team tandem lifted the 90-tonne structure with two mobile cranes – one 330-tonne and one 220 tonne – on to six Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT). Traffic management was put in place from 6pm that evening and at 8pm when the road was closed to traffic the installation could begin. The SPMTs were controlled remotely, moving the structure into place on to the concrete abutments and temporary jacks by midnight, and through the night the structure’s bearings were secured and grouted. The temporary compressive struts and hangers were removed in sequence throughout the day on Saturday. Between 4pm and 4am on Sunday 24 July, 18 permanent, stainless-steel finish Total Macalloy Struts were individually torqued and tensioned to a predetermined load before being fine-tuned. The footbridge installation programme was planned meticulously by Winvic, not least because further works to the bridge could be undertaken until 10 August, due to a three-week embargo on road closures for the Commonwealth Games, being held in Birmingham. With completion of the Peddimore infrastructure project scheduled for summer, any postponement with the bridge would delay handover. The timescales also meant that no lead-time could be lost, but the UK’s record-temperatures also presented challenging conditions for operatives. Therefore, the site team made the decision to begin work at 5am each day so activities could still be carried to programme out before temperatures increased in the afternoons.  The Winvic team completed the works ahead of schedule and the road was re-opened 12 hours earlier than expected, at 5.30pm on Sunday 24 July. This week, Winvic will begin the construction a permanent footpath, east of the bridge, to the Peddimore site as well as a temporary footpath on the west side of the bridge, which will meet with Walmley Ash Lane. The bridge and pathways will give residents pedestrian access over the A38 into Minworth and forms part of the green travel planning for the scheme. The other focus areas during the final five weeks of the scheme are installing access steps, handrailing, cabling and lighting, undertaking a secondary reinforced concrete cast to the bridge abutments, backfilling the abutments and approach ramps and completing the drainage and ducting connections. Rob Cook, Winvic’s Director of Civils and Infrastructure, commented: “Our scenario planning, programme management, health and safety preparations and liaison with Birmingham City Council have led to a very successful weekend at IM Properties Peddimore project. Every step of the footbridge installation – from lifting it on to the SPMTs to putting it in place over the highway to fitting the struts – went to plan; in fact, so well, we were able to open the A38 twelve hours earlier than scheduled. It was a true team effort and numerous specialist subcontractors proved themselves to be leaders in their fields.  “There was no room in error with the timings, or our upcoming agreed handover date to IM Properties could not be met due to the embargo on road closures during the Commonwealth Games. The soaring temperatures certainly didn’t help in the run-up and I’d like to give special thanks to the whole Peddimore team who went above and beyond, starting work extra early so tasks could be completed before temperatures increased in the afternoon. With the bridge in place, we’re on track for handover towards the end of summer.” Andy Reynolds, Project Director for IM Properties added: “Winvic Construction Ltd, is a trusted partner in our supply chain and having worked with them across a number of our schemes, they have continually demonstrated their commitment to meeting deadlines and ensuring a partnership approach is taken when liaising with key stakeholders and the local community to work considerately and minimise disruption. “The success of the bridge works is testament to the professionalism and determination of the whole team to plan and execute a complex and time critical operation of this nature. Working in difficult conditions, they really excelled themselves and they have once again underlined why we selected them to deliver one of the UK’s largest manufacturing and logistics schemes.” Winvic praised a number of specialist subcontractors that worked as one team with Winvic to successfully deliver the bridge works, including Carver Engineering Services, Mammoet, USL Ekspan and Rubix.
