Bellway revenues rise 27%

When house-builder Bellway reports its annual results later this year, it will show a 27% rise in sales with a mouth-watering 22% operating margin. For the year to 31st July 2016 Bellway generated revenue of £2.2bn (2015: £1.73bn). Housing completions were up 12.5% to 8,721 (2015: 7,752), with the average selling price up 13% to £252,700. When full results are published in October, we can expect to see operating profit topping £480m, the board indicated today in a trading update. This excludes an aextra £17.3m exceptional profit arising on the disposal of Bellway’s interest in Barking Riverside. Chief executive Ted Ayres said: “The group has delivered an outstanding trading performance, achieving new records for Bellway in respect of both volume and operating margin.  We have invested in high quality land and have maintained a significant forward order book, thereby ensuring that the group is well placed to continue its sizeable contribution to meeting the UK’s requirement for new homes in the year ahead.  It is still too early to assess the effect of the EU referendum result, however trading in recent weeks has been encouraging and Bellway, with its strong balance sheet and robust land bank, can be flexible and respond opportunistically to any changes in market conditions.” Only at the most expensive London developments have some customers shown post-Brexit anxiety and this is not a big market for Bellway. Overall, visitor numbers are still strong and the cancellation rate remains at a historic low, the company said. On 1st August Bellway opened a 19th trading division in Durham.     This article was published on 5 Aug 2016 (last updated on 5 Aug 2016). Source link

Lack of anti-scalding device claims life in Middlesex

Lack of anti-scalding device claims life in Middlesex Published:  15 July, 2016 Anti-scald manufacturer, Intatec, is reminding care home owners the importance in protecting against fatal bathtime scalding, following news of the death of an elderly resident at a nursing home in Middlesex. Old Wall Cottage Nursing Home pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and has been fined £100,000 after an 89-year-old resident received significant scalding injuries and subsequently died in hospital. Doris Snook, who had been living at the Betchworth care home for six years, was estimated to have received burns to her arms, back and feet due to bath water being above 48˚C, the maximum safe temperature. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the incident, which took place in August 2011, found that bathroom taps were not adjusted to limit the temperature of water to a safe level for bathing and showering, which ultimately led to Mrs Snook’s death. It also found that the care home failed to effectively communicate information and instruction to its staff so that the control measures could be implemented effectively. Stuart Gizzi, director at Intatec, said: “We are dismayed to hear of yet another fatal bath scalding and our thoughts and sympathies are with the family. From looking at the HSE report, it appears that Old Wall Cottage Nursing Home had its hot water set to a fluctuating high temperature, with no effective anti-scald measures. “By law, anti-scald devices should be fitted to baths and showers in a care environment. Whilst it’s important for water to be above 60˚C when leaving a boiler or hot water tank – to kill off any harmful legionella bacteria – it certainly shouldn’t be delivered to the water outlet at anywhere near that temperature. Anything over 38˚C can be uncomfortable, and over 48˚C downright dangerous. That’s why it is compulsory to fit an anti-scald device – such as a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) – with the temperature adjusted correctly and fitted within a metre of the outlet. “Since it became law to fit a TMV or any other appropriate temperature control devices as part of the Part G Building Regulations, we have seen a decrease in the number of scalding deaths in the UK. However, this sad loss just highlights the importance of not only fitting the device, but ensuring it is installed correctly, commissioned properly and regularly maintained.” Source link
