Department for Transport Shortlists Five Routes for New Trans-Pennine Tunnel

Five routes have been shortlisted by the Department for Transport for the proposed multi-billion pound Trans-Pennine road tunnel that will link Manchester with Sheffield. All five of the routes link the M1 north of Sheffield with the M60 east of Manchester, with four of the routes starting at the M67. The proposed tunnel could nearly halve journey times between the two cities and save about 30 minutes on journey times. Data from Trafficmaster shows that the current journey from the urban centres of Sheffield and Manchester via Pennine routes excluding the M62 is around 40 miles and on average takes an hour and 15 minutes. The distance from Sheffield and Manchester via the M62 is approximately 75 minutes and on average the travel time is just over an hour and a half. John Hayes, Transport Minister, said that the project will be the most ambitious one of its kind since the motorways were first constructed 50 years ago. In response, civil engineering contractors called on the Department for Transport to engage with its supply chain from the outset to make sure that the next wave of major road schemes are delivered efficiently. The tunnel announcement was accompanied by reports that encouraged the construction of improved connections between Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford and upgrades to important parts of the A1 in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Marie-Claude Hemming, CECA Head of External Affairs, commented: “CECA has long argued for investment in world-class infrastructure to ensure the UK remains an attractive place to live and work. “As such we welcome the publication of these long awaited reports which will deliver this growth through quicker, more reliable journeys. But in a time of economic constraint, it is imperative that these projects are completed with speed and efficiency.” Hemming added that CECA believes that the DfT and its delivery partners must engage with their potential supply chains early in the development process to make sure that the new routes are built in budget and on time.

Galliford Try Secures East Midlands Airport Runway Revamp Project

Galliford Try has landed the job to re-surface the runway at East Midlands Airport through a number of intensive weekend possessions over a seven week period. The project is an ambitious one and is a first for runway refurbishment as a360 strong workforce will lay 50,000 tonnes of specially formulated material across a 150,000m2 runway. The full length runway replacement will be carried out in November and December this year. Galliford Try Aviation Director, Colin Abbott, commented: “We’re delighted to be working with the East Midlands Airport team on the refurbishment of their runway. “Logistics make this an exceptionally challenging project and due to the hard work of all involved scoping out every possible scenario, we have every confidence that the scheme will be delivered safely and on time.” Although the runway is not operational, the airport will also replace more than 1200 lights in and around the area with LED lighting, which is better for the environment. Meanwhile, Managing Director at East Midlands Airport, Andy Cliffe, said that the decision to complete the project in this way was reached after lengthy consultations with their airlines and cargo operators. It is hoped that the chosen course of action with be the best way of avoiding significant disruption in the run up to Christmas. Cliffe added: “The timing for us is crucial and we had to look to do this in the winter season, when we naturally aren’t as busy.” Manchester Airport Group, owner of East Midlands Airport, has set out an eight year airfield works programme across its four airports worth about £200 million. Last month, more than half a million passengers flew from East Midlands Airport, which was an increase of 6.3% from the same period last year. A total of 570,581 people travelled through the airport to destinations such as Tenerife, Alicante, Palma, Malaga and Faro.

RSPB, Barratt Homes, Manthorpe Building Products Develop New Home for Swifts

The RSPB has joined forces with Barratt Homes and Manthorpe Building Products to develop a brick that doubles as a nesting box for swifts. The largest nature conservation charity in the UK says that the number of swifts has nearly halved in the last 20 years and that new nesting boxes are required to help recover the numbers as they return to the UK every summer to breed. Swifts embark on a 6,000 mile migration to nest in the UK, however falling population numbers mean that there are now fewer than 90,000 breeding pairs arriving in the UK, which is down from nearly 150,000 pairs 20 years ago. The decline is partially linked to a reduction in the number of potential nesting sites. Manthorpe Building Products, a British based manufacturing firm, has worked with Barratt Homes and the RSPB to produce the new swift brick, which is designed for easy incorporation during the construction of new homes. The first batch of new swift nest boxes have just been fitted at the Kingsbrook development in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and overall Barratt will install up to 900 swift boxes in new homes at Kingsbrook. One of the primary aims of the RSPB and Barratt Homes partnership since it launched two years ago has been the provision of more nesting sites for swifts. By working in partnership, they commissioned the Manthorpe project to develop a new swift nest box design that is easy to install during construction. Barratt Developments Group Design and Technical Director, Michael Finn, commented: “The bricks are an industry first – they are fully drained, ventilated and are unobtrusive, by matching the colour of the bricks. They also help nurture chicks by giving them room to stand when they hatch. “Crucially too, they are much, much cheaper than any other swift brick on the market, which will help their uptake.”

William Anelay Facing Administration Unless Creditors Deal Secured

Specialist contractor firm William Anelay is set to enter administration unless it can secure a deal with its creditors. The company has a £38 million turnover and has proposed a company voluntary arrangement that will see it pay creditors a percentage of every pound owed. Unless the deal is accepted by 75% of creditors, the business has revealed that it will face administration and its 190 staff members could lose their jobs. The York-based company has been in operation since 1747. Credit agent Top Service says that William Anelay owes 22 firms £200,000 in total, with five of the creditors issuing debt recovery orders with the agency. Specialists in heritage restoration and historic construction, the company said that it came into financial problems after a period of expansion which saw it take on projects outside its traditional work scope. During this period, the firm took on a number of problem contracts and revealed that it was unable to pay suppliers. Top Service also said that most of the outstanding payments have been longer than 120 days. The company’s associated businesses – Anelay Building and Conservation, Anelay Traditional Masonry, Hare and Ransome Joinery and Lowery Roofing – have not been affected by the CVA and will continue trading as usual. Charles Anelay, Chief Executive of William Anelay, said that all but one of the problem projects have been completed and the company has a strong order book for the next year. The company has secured a £33 million workload, with £9 million worth of projects being considered for the end of the current financial year. Anelay commented: “While only a few projects outside our usual sphere have been involved, the values were significant and this has harmed our business performance and cashflow. ”They are now finished, save one, where completion is imminent, and another, which has been brought under control, but unfortunately we are now unable to pay suppliers.”

Edinburgh Marina Planning Applications Submitted

The first detailed planning applications have been submitted for the initial stages of the proposed Edinburgh Marina at Granton after the overall masterplan was approved earlier in the week. Edinburgh Council’s development management committee granted the consent after a decision was agreed in principle last December to grant permission for a new Granton Harbour masterplan. Full consents are now in place for the overall scheme thanks to this latest decision. Straight after the decision, developers submitted detailed planning applications for some of the individual sites of the overall masterplan, including the marina boatyard and associated infrastructure for the new 300 berth Edinburgh Marina complex. Included in the approved masterplan is a new 13,449m2 retail and leisure centre, along with new homes for more than 4,000 residents. The focal point of the Granton regeneration will be the marina, which is situated less than two and a half miles from Edinburgh city centre. The total completed development value of the scheme is estimated to be around £500 million. Granton Central Developments’ Kevin Fawcett said that the latest development is a significant and extremely positive boost for Edinburgh at a very challenging time for the economy. Fawcett continued: “Aside from the construction jobs the project will create for local suppliers, the development will provide over 900 new permanent jobs upon completion as well as over 2,000 new homes. “It is a momentous and long awaited day for Granton that has seen 15 years to reach fruition, and we can now be sure that the regeneration can begin in earnest.” Edinburgh Marina will be the first new marina situated next to a European capital city for a number of decades and as one of the biggest private infrastructure projects in Scotland, it will give a major half billion pound inward investment boost to Edinburgh. The designer of the project is Wilson Gunn Architects.
