First solar farm with contract for difference connected

A 12MW solar farm in Shropshire has become the first solar project in the UK with a contract for difference (CfD) to be connected to the grid. Charity Farm solar park in Shropshire Charity Farm was one of five solar projects to be awarded the subsidy in the first auction in 2015; two of the four others have since been scrapped. The farm won the contract with a strike price of £79.23 per megawatt hour (2012 prices). Supplier Axpo UK will buy all of the electricity generated by the farm for seven years in a deal worth £7.5 million. The project will provide enough power for more than 4,000 homes – it was constructed in just over two months. Chief executive of developer Lightsource Renewable Energy, Nick Boyle, said: “A truly competitive system is fair to all concerned, but there has been no new round of auctions announced for solar as yet and, if the UK is serious about the future of its energy security, it is important that this is addressed. Great strides have been made in the industry and we firmly believe that solar has a significant role to play in the overall UK energy mix.” Three further contracts for difference auctions are scheduled to take place during the current parliament. The first is due by this year – only less-established ‘Pot 2’ technologies such as offshore wind will be eligible. It’s not yet clear when the other two auctions will take place, or what technologies will be eligible to bid in them. Source link

Renewable generation up by 6.4 per cent

Renewable electricity generation increased 6.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the same time last year, producing a total of 23.22 TWh. The government statistics show that solar PV generation increased the most (40 per cent) of all renewable sources, to 1.34 TWh. Bioenergy electricity generation also increased significantly to 8.26 TWh, up 18 per cent on the same period the year before.  Onshore wind was the only renewable to reduce generation in Q1 2016 to 6.43 TWh, 10.5 per cent less than the previous year. But offshore wind generated 5.14 TWh, increasing 10 per cent. Hydropower generation saw a small increase, producing 2.05 TWh. Renewables share of total generation also increased in the first quarter of this year to 25.1 per cent, which the report says “mostly reflecting increased capacity”. The contribution of renewable electricity to the UK’s energy mix was up 29 per cent, showing significant growth from quarter 1 in 2015 when it was up 19 per cent. The figures come after comments from Renewable UK chief executive Hugh McNeal last month calling for confidence in onshore wind investment and opportunities in renewables. Source link

The 100% mortgage returns

Barclays has announced that it is offering a three-year fixed rate deal at 2.99% for buyers with no deposit but who earn more than £50,000. The lender said it has made changes to its Family Springboard Mortgage in celebration of the third anniversary since it was first launched. The mortgage, which became available in 2013, previously required borrowers to put down a deposit of at least 5%. Sound too good to be true? As part of the deal, family or friends of the borrower will have to deposit the equivalent of 10% of the property’s purchase price in a savings account and keep it there for three years. They will receive the money back at the end of the three-year period with interest equivalent to the base rate plus 1.5%. Jody Baker, Head of Money, comparethemarket.com, had this to say: “The government’s commitment to building new starter homes,‎ the introduction of the Help to Buy ISA and changes to stamp duty, has shown its’ efforts to make housing more affordable to first time buyers and it is encouraging to see the industry getting in on the act too. Whilst Barclays’ move adds a viable option for those looking to buy a home, there is, of course, a note of caution. Loans of this sort require prudence on the part of the borrower, ensuring that they have not over-extended themselves. We would always recommend to anyone that is taking a mortgage works out a detailed budget of their monthly household expenses and assesses in some depth their incomings and outgoings. Equally, we would expect these products to remain few and far between at the fringes of the mortgage lending universe by necessity – after all, it was riskier lending which caused the financial crisis in the first place.” Henry Pryor, a buying agent and housing market commentator referred to the new product as a “financial grenade”. Personal Rapid Transit Option Revealed for Glasgow Airport Rail Link

Plans have been revealed for a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system which would take travellers from a new station in Paisley to Glasgow Airport if a project by Junction 29 (Scotland) Ltd is selected as the preferred option for a new airport rail link. The PRT system, which would run from a relocated Paisley St James station, is one of the two options being considered by the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Cabinet for the proposed Glasgow Airport Rail Link. The rival tram-train option, which would see carriages running from Glasgow Central to the airport via Paisley, is estimated to cost £144 million and would offer a 16.5 minute direct journey from Glasgow city centre to the airport, with an estimated completion date of 2025. Using the existing main rail line which goes through Paisley Gilmour Street station, PRT’s backers said their alternative option offers a reduced cost, faster journey times, a quicker completion speed and would cause less disruption. Junction 29 (Scotland) Ltd said its plan would cost £70-£80 million to deliver over 12 months and would be built alongside the existing network. It also claims that a 1.1 mile journey from the airport would take just four minutes. Junction 29 (Scotland) Ltd owns a 40-acre site next to Glasgow Airport at Junction 29 of the M8.  The site is large enough to provide a park and ride at this new station plus additional land for a mixed-use development.  The PRT option uses proven technology and features small automated vehicles, which can be different sizes, operating on a network of specially built lightweight guideways. Managing Director of Junction 29 Ltd, Paul Kelly, commented: “The PRT option offers reduced costs, a faster journey time, can be delivered within 12 months and would significantly ease congestion on the M8 corridor between the airport and the city centre.

Pupil Numbers Double at Stratford-upon-Avon School Thanks to £2.1m Expansion

A primary school in Stratford-upon-Avon will now be able to welcome more than 200 extra pupils, as the significant expansion work has been finished. Working in partnership with local contractor Ashe Construction and the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa), Bishopton Primary School underwent a £2.7 million expansion earlier in the year to support the raised demand of more school places in the area. Included in the works was an enlargement of the current assembly hall, a new area of car parking and eight additional classrooms. As a result, Bishopton School will now become a two-form entry school and has doubled its potential pupil numbers from 210 to 420. Headteacher at Bishopton Primary School, Lester Hunt, is pleased with the final outcome of the project. He commented: “We were delighted to be handed over the brand new build two weeks early this summer. “Ashe Construction and empa have provided the school with an eight class key stage 2 block, a new reception class, an additional car park, a hall extension and refurbished offices. “The children, staff and parents are all hugely impressed with the new facilities and have commented on how it is like being in a new school. We will now be able to educate twice as many children in excellent surroundings and we are looking forward to an exciting future as a result.” Contract manager at Ashe Construction, Rob Slack added: “Due to an increased need for school spaces in the area, Bishopton School was required to become a two-form entry school to meet the growing demand. It is great to have had the opportunity to work on such a significant project. “The work at Bishopton School went extremely well. From the outset, Ashe Construction worked together with the pupils, staff and parents to ensure that the project was finished to the highest standard and with little disruption to the student’s day to day learning.”

£350m Manchester Metrolink Expansion Given Go-Ahead

Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network is due to expand even further after plans for a new £350 million tram line through Trafford Park were given the go ahead. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has granted Transport for Greater Manchester legal powers to construct the new 3.4 mile line which will allow work to start this winter. TfGM, which owns the Metrolink network, has developed plans for the Trafford Park line and will soon appoint a contractor. Once in operation in 2020/2021, the line will offer a major public transport boost for the region, and will offer fast, frequent transport links for thousands of workers. The new Trafford Park line will branch off from the existing Pomona stop and call at six new tram stops. Among these new stops is Wharfside, situated close to Old Trafford football stadium, the Imperial War Museum, key business areas through the industrial park and visitor destinations such as Eventcity and the intu Trafford Centre. The £350 million funding package to construct the line has already been secured by Greater Manchester Combined Authority through the ‘earn back’ funding agreement as part of the Greater Manchester devolution deal. Mayor of Greater Manchester, Tony Lloyd, welcomed the news, commenting: “Today’s announcement is another big step forward for Greater Manchester. I’m delighted that our long held ambition to build a new Metrolink line through Trafford Park is now about to become a reality. “This new line will boost our economy and bring us closer to our goal of a world class transport system for Greater Manchester. I look forward to seeing the first shovel in the ground this winter.” Meanwhile, bosses at RATP Dev UK, which has operated the trams for Transport for Greater Manchester for the last five years, have their sights set on running the city’s buses. RATP, one of the five largest transport companies in the world, already runs 12% of London’s 8,600 buses for TFL, along with 4,500 buses in Paris.
