BCO Unveils New Office Design Guide for a Changing Workplace

The British Council for Offices (BCO) has released the third edition of its Guide to Fit-Out, offering fresh insights and best practice recommendations for office design in an era shaped by hybrid working and the transition to net zero. This is the first update to the Guide since 2011 and brings together expertise from over 100 industry professionals. It provides occupiers and built environment specialists with essential guidance on creating modern, flexible, and sustainable workspaces that enhance employee well-being while integrating smart technology and AI. Covering every stage of the fit-out process—from material selection and procurement to long-term management—the Guide is designed to be used alongside the BCO’s Guide to Specification, which helps define best-in-class workplaces. Key Focus Areas in the Latest Edition: This latest edition includes standalone sections on fire safety, acoustics, vertical transportation, and structural engineering—reflecting the increasing demand for offices that offer greater flexibility, adaptability, and connectivity. Offices Designed for the Future The Guide highlights a growing shift towards multi-use spaces, where traditional desk areas make way for collaborative and social zones. It also provides a checklist of design interventions that enhance occupier well-being, from biophilic elements and active workspaces to stress-reducing art and wellness facilities. Smart technology plays a crucial role throughout, with recommendations on how AI and automation can improve security, energy efficiency, and space management. The Guide also emphasises the importance of clear sustainability goals, encouraging businesses to set key performance indicators (KPIs) for reducing carbon impact. A major focus is the adoption of circular economy principles, where outgoing and incoming tenants collaborate with landlords to minimise waste and maximise reuse of fit-out materials. The Guide also advocates for material passport systems, improving traceability and reuse of building components. Insights from Industry Leaders Neil Pennell, Head of Design Innovation and Property Solutions at Landsec, said:“The new edition reflects how office use has evolved over the past decade. People want workplaces that offer valuable experiences beyond a traditional desk setup. Sustainability is now a key business priority, and our guidance on circularity principles shows how multiple stakeholders can help reduce waste in the fit-out process.” Peter Williams, Senior Technical Advisor at Stanhope, added:“The Guide is ultimately about helping businesses attract and retain the best talent. The pandemic accelerated a shift in office design, and now workspaces must work harder to differentiate themselves. By prioritising sustainability, flexibility, and technology, businesses can create office environments that foster creativity and collaboration.” Richard Kauntze, Chief Executive at the BCO, commented:“The Guide to Fit-Out is a practical resource for today’s rapidly changing workplace landscape. Health, well-being, and sustainability are no longer optional—they are essential. This edition encapsulates the latest industry trends and is a must-read for anyone involved in office design and fit-out.” The new edition features case studies from award-winning projects and links to an extensive online library that will be regularly updated. Kingspan meets target to recycle one billion PET bottles per year into its manufacturing processes

Kingspan meets target to recycle one billion PET bottles per year into its manufacturing processes

Kingspan Group, a global leader in high-performance building solutions, today announces it has achieved its ambitious Planet Passionate target to recycle one billion PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles per year into its manufacturing processes by 2025.[3] The achievement is part of a collaborative effort with Synthesia Technology (Synthesia), the subsidiary of Kingspan Group which specialises in chemical products, polyester polyols and polyurethane systems for thermal and acoustic insulation. At its sites in Barcelona, Spain, Synthesia uses post-consumer waste PET as a raw material to create polyester polyols that are used in the manufacture of a variety of thermal insulation and insulated panel products, largely across the Kingspan Group. This recycling process not only helps to reduce the volume of waste PET that ends up in landfill or oceans, but also lowers dependence on virgin raw materials. With buildings and infrastructure accounting for 38.8 billion tonnes of global raw material consumption annually[4], such technologies will play a critical role in transforming how resources are used and managed within the construction sector. Increasing its use of recycled, bio-based and renewable input materials is an important facet of Kingspan’s circularity strategy. The recycling of one billion PET bottles[5] by 2025 was a key element of this strategy and is fundamental to Kingspan’s ambition to help accelerate the transition to a circular economy, part of its wider Planet Passionate environmental sustainability programme, which was launched in 2019. “Achieving our target to recycle one billion PET bottles[6] into our manufacturing processes is a critical milestone in our Planet Passionate programme, and we are immensely proud to have hit our goal one year ahead of schedule. This is testament to the dedication of teams around our organisation and the development of innovative recycling technologies by our Synthesia Technology business.” said Holly Loughman, Head of Sustainability at Kingspan Group. Vittorio Bonapersona, Corporate R&D Manager at Synthesia Technology, added: “The demand for solutions that help tackle plastic pollution will only increase, and we are delighted to offer technology that contributes to this global effort while also supporting the construction industry’s transition to a circular economy. This milestone is an excellent indicator of what is possible when we commit to transforming how the world’s finite resources are used. For us at Synthesia and across the Kingspan Group, this is just the beginning; we are also leveraging our advanced technologies to recycle insulation waste, which will help us make further important headway as an organisation towards our circularity ambitions.” For more information on Planet Passionate, visit Kingspan’s website here: https://www.kingspangroup.com/en/sustainability/planet-passionate/ Find more information about Synthesia Technology, visit the company’s website here: https://www.synthesia.com/en/ Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Bouygues UK achieves net zero at its Pentre Awel project site

Bouygues UK achieves net zero at its Pentre Awel project site

Major contractor Bouygues UK, which is building zone 1 of Llanelli’s Pentre Awel development known as ‘Canolfan’, has worked with sub-contractors and its supply chain during the course of the 24-month build to achieve net zero on the construction project. This includes over 90% reduction on direct emissions of all fuels on the site as well as a 10% reduction in waste production, and energy and water consumption. Since the start of the project over 450 tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved thanks to this initiative. By implementing energy, waste and resource-saving initiatives, including adopting sustainably-certified hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a fuel, as well as sourcing recycled and green materials, the project has reached this pivotal milestone of being net zero. Due to the reduction in emissions from the use of HVO at Pentre Awel, Bouygues UK has made the commitment that all of its building sites across the UK will be powered by HVO. Its procured HVO fuel has received ISCC certification due to its traceable and deforestation-free supply chain. Partners include Green4Wales, Watson Fuels, New Era and CSS. The Canolfan Pentre Awel project team has worked tirelessly during the nearly two years on site, to put carbon reduction at the heart of the development. It has targeted 24 specific initiatives to help reduce emissions, waste and energy on the project. Early into the development, solar-powered site offices and cabins were installed on site, and when not powered by the sun, those buildings were run by a HVO-powered generator. The site’s CCTV cameras were also powered by solar. Such was the success of the HVO generator, that early into the project the whole site was converted to HVO. Other initiatives such as working closely with its supply chain to source recycled building materials has also contributed to the project’s wider net zero journey. Such materials include using reinforced bars for the buildings’ foundations that are comprised of 98% recycling content, while the structural steel contained 80% recycled content. When excavating to lay the foundations, soil from the surface of the site was also taken to a local recycling facility where the material was segregated, treated and reused – reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. The team have partnered with Gaia, a Carmarthenshire-based company that helps to identify, monitor and reduce power consumption, using AI and a range of sensors. To date, the energy savings from using GAIA are around 47.9%.  The project also benefits from a carbon consultant who advises on identifying low carbon solutions throughout the construction phase and monitors carbon, waste, deliveries as well as upskilling of the workforce on climate and environmental topics. Canolfan Pentre Awel is an innovative, multi-million-pound development which will bring together life science and business innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities at the 83-acre Delta Lakes site on the Llanelli coastline. It is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal (£40million) and is the largest regeneration scheme in south west Wales. Peter Sharpe, Project Director at Pentre Awel, said of achieving net zero: “We are immensely proud of this achievement. As well as building a state of the art, top quality facility, as a project team we set our minds to reducing as much of our carbon emissions as possible. We set out a plan and I’m so pleased to say that we have achieved it. “This would not have happened had it not been for the determination and support of not only the Bouygues UK staff here at Pentre Awel, but also our amazing sub-contractors and supply chain partners who came with us on this net zero journey.” Phillipe Bernard, Chair and CEO of Bouygues UK, said: “I commend the project team’s efforts in significantly reducing carbon emissions at the Pentre Awel project. This achievement shows that sustainable construction can be achieved. “We are very proud that due to the success achieved with the use of HVO at Pentre Awel, we are now mandating the use of sustainably-certified HVO at all our sites across the UK.” Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added: “The Council is deeply committed to tackling climate change, and we acknowledge that we are responsible for reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging Carmarthenshire residents to be conscious of their own carbon footprint. It is encouraging to see that this Council development is tackling carbon emissions head on and leading by example for future developments to prioritise our environment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team at Bouygues UK for their commitment as we pass this monumental milestone.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

The Advantages of Using Egger Boards In Commercial Construction

The Advantages of Using Egger Boards In Commercial Construction

Commercial construction requires materials that are strong, efficient, and cost-effective. Builders need options that help them complete projects on time while maintaining quality. Egger boards have become a preferred choice because they are both reliable and easy to use. These engineered wood panels provide several benefits that contribute to the durability and longevity of buildings. Understanding these advantages can help construction professionals make informed decisions. Strong and Long-Lasting Egger boards are built to withstand heavy use, which makes them ideal for commercial buildings. They are manufactured with dense wood fibers and resins that prevent bending, swelling, or shrinking. As a result, they offer greater durability than regular plywood, even in demanding conditions. In addition to their strength, Egger boards have excellent moisture resistance. Many commercial buildings experience humidity levels that can weaken certain materials over time. However, moisture-resistant Egger boards can withstand damp conditions without deterioration to ensure that the building structure remains intact for years. Cost-Effective and Easy to Install Budget constraints often play a significant role in construction projects. So, it’s essential to choose durable materials that balance cost and quality. Egger boards are a cost-effective alternative to premium plywood while still offering excellent performance. Their manufacturing process maximizes the use of raw materials, which keeps production costs low and makes them an economical option. Another advantage of Egger boards is their ease of installation. Their uniform surface allows for precise cutting and fitting. This reduces material waste and simplifies the construction process. Since they are quick to install, labor costs are lower, and project timelines can be shortened without compromising quality. For projects that require specific dimensions, getting an Egger board cut to size ensures an even better fit, reducing unnecessary adjustments on-site and improving overall efficiency. An Environmentally Friendly Option Sustainability is an increasing priority in the construction industry. Many companies aim to use materials that are both eco-friendly and high-performing. Egger boards meet these expectations as they are made from responsibly sourced wood and produced using environmentally conscious methods. These boards also contribute to reducing a building’s environmental impact. Their long lifespan minimizes the need for replacements, lowering material consumption over time. Additionally, many Egger boards are recyclable, which makes them an excellent choice for projects seeking sustainability certifications. Versatile for Multiple Applications Egger boards can be used in various aspects of commercial construction, which makes them a versatile building material. Some common applications include: This adaptability simplifies construction planning, as builders can rely on one base material for multiple purposes rather than sourcing different products for each need. Enhanced Fire Safety Fire safety is a key concern in commercial construction. Many Egger board variants come with fire-resistant properties, which help slow the spread of flames in case of an emergency. This feature makes them a safer choice for walls, flooring, and other essential structural components. Using fire-resistant materials not only enhances safety but also ensures compliance with strict building regulations. Property owners and contractors can have greater confidence in their buildings’ ability to meet industry standards and protect occupants. Minimal Maintenance and Long Lifespan Maintaining commercial buildings can be costly, so choosing low-maintenance materials is beneficial. Egger boards require little upkeep due to their resistance to moisture, scratches, and impact damage. Even in high-traffic areas, they maintain their appearance and structural integrity for years. Because they require fewer repairs, businesses can save money on maintenance and avoid frequent disruptions. A well-maintained space also helps create a professional image, which is important for offices, retail spaces, and hospitality businesses. Aesthetic Appeal and Customization Beyond functionality, commercial spaces need to look visually appealing. Egger boards come in various textures, colors, and finishes, making it easier to achieve a specific design aesthetic. Whether aiming for a modern, industrial, or traditional look, these boards provide flexibility without compromising durability. Custom finishes also allow businesses to create a unique environment that reflects their brand identity. Whether designing a stylish office, a welcoming retail store, or a high-end restaurant, Egger boards offer a combination of strength and style. Conclusion Egger boards are a valuable addition to commercial construction due to their strength, affordability, and sustainability. Their ability to resist moisture, fire, and wear ensures long-lasting performance while keeping maintenance costs low. With their versatility, ease of installation, and aesthetic appeal, they provide an efficient and ideal solution for flooring, walls, furniture, and more. Choosing Egger boards helps builders create durable, efficient, and visually appealing commercial spaces that stand the test of time.
