Exclusive: Paul Chandler quits Skanska after 34 years

Sources told CN Mr Chandler is expected to move to Wates, which last week launched a new residential arm. Wates directed enquiries to Skanska, which declined to comment on the move. Mr Chandler has been with Skanska since 1982 and was MD of its commercial building business before being made an executive VP in 2010. He had responsibility for Skanska UK’s operating units for buildings. It is understood senior staff were informed about the departure this week, with an internal announcement and press release expected to follow today. Among Skanska’s wins this year was its first deal for Derwent London: the £45m design-and-build contract for the Copyright Building. A Skanska spokeswoman confirmed Mr Chandler will depart the firm at the end of 2016 and that he had resigned from Skanska UK’s executive management team with immediate effect. Source link

RIBA offers smart advice for small practices on how to thrive

Tickets are now on sale for RIBA’s sole and small practitioner’s conference, Guerrilla Tactics. Taking place on 11 and 12 November at RIBA’s central London HQ, the theme of this year’s conference is ARCHI-PRENEURS – Smart Strategies for Small Practices. “The Guerrilla Tactics event is about the spirit of smallness, about optimism and opportunity”, says Architectural Review (AR) Executive Editor Will Hunter, the curator of the conference. “In lots of industries today, the most creative ideas are coming out of really little companies. Now that we’re emerging from recession, the conference will be about ’how to ‘thrive’, not ‘how to survive’.” In the first keynote session, Farshid Moussavi from Farshid Moussavi Architecture and David Saxby from Architecture 00:/ will debate ‘Practice in the 21st Century’, with a discussion led by Professor Nigel Coates. In another keynote, the former senior policy advisor to David Cameron, Rohan Silva will talk on ‘Demystifying Entrepreneurship’. The morning sessions will explore different ways for small practices to operate: ‘Practice Models’ will look at a range of organisational structures, from urban collectives to rural workshops; and ‘Diverse Directions’ will examine how architects can deploy their spatial and strategic skills in other design disciplines. In the afternoon, ‘Client: Value and Values’ will offer frank advice on to how to maximise and manage client relationships – from both the architect’s and client’s perspective – and ‘Essential Guides to…’ will feature advice on Leadership, Branding, Pitching, Digital, Resourcing and Presentation. “We operate in a much more networked society, and all the sessions are in some way an exploration of how the practice of architecture is enriched by its connections with other things, be it clients, ideas or industries” says Will Hunter. Developing this theme, in the Live Pitch, practices will compete to reinvent a 21st century pub. The evening drinks reception promises ‘mentoring speed-dating’ where architects and students can hope can hope to meet a champion to help them reach their full potential in practice. There are 50 student tickets available at the radically reduced rate of £50 for each of the two days. Students applying for this offer must be registered on an RIBA validated Part1, 2 or 3 programme. Tickets are on sale now and available from: http://www.architecture.com/guerrillatactics2014 Guerrilla Tactics is proudly supported by Ruskin Air Management and Xero. Total Glass gets the colours right for Pine Mews

Category: Construction Industry Today | Subscribe to Construction Industry Today Feed Published Tue, Mar 15th 2016 In one of their more unusual – and colourful – projects, Liverpool-based Total Glass supplied red and green replacement windows and entrance doors for a major social housing refurbishment project in the city’s Chinatown district. Posted via Industry Today. Follow us on Twitter @IndustryToday In one of their more unusual – and colourful – projects, Liverpool-based Total Glass supplied red and green replacement windows and entrance doors for a major social housing refurbishment project in the city’s Chinatown district. The PVC-U window and door fabricator was engaged by Pine Court Housing Association as part of a £250,000 investment programme in properties at Pine Mews. The installation work, which included Chung Hok House sheltered accommodation scheme, was carried out by the HA’s Group partners Sovini Property Services. Red and green are considered auspicious colours in Chinese culture, so a key aspect of the specification was to match the buildings’ existing colour scheme. Total Glass supplied ‘A’-rated energy-efficient PVC-U windows finished in Pine Green RAL 6000 to replace the original timber ones. New final exit doors, which replaced old wooden ones at Chung Hok House, were also supplied in the same shade of green. The Total Glass Powerframe high-security aluminium communal entrance door in Traffic Red RAL 3020 was specified for the main entrance and fitted within a green doorset to match the windows. Around the courtyard, a total of 14 flats and 13 houses were also similarly upgraded with red GRP composite doors and green outer-frames complementing the windows. Total Glass liaised closely with Pine Court and One Vision Housing, also part of the Sovini Group, on the project, which used translators to inform tenants at all stages and facilitate their participation during the works. “Pre-contract consultations with tenants and surveys were carried out, along with pilot installations to ensure that the colour specifications and designs were all correct,” explained Total Glass Commercial Contracts Manager Mark Formby. “This was one of our client’s flagship schemes, so attention to detail throughout the project was vital. Completed on time and to budget, it was a success and the clients are delighted.” David Brown, Pine Court’s Director of Operations, said: “We’re really pleased with the work that’s been undertaken. Disruption for customers has been kept to a minimum and the new installations look very professional.” Formed in 1986, Pine Court Housing was originally established to provide quality homes and housing services for those in need, with a specific focus on the Chinese and South East Asian communities.  Source link
