The first detailed planning applications have been submitted for the initial stages of the proposed Edinburgh Marina at Granton after the overall masterplan was approved earlier in the week.
Edinburgh Council’s development management committee granted the consent after a decision was agreed in principle last December to grant permission for a new Granton Harbour masterplan.
Full consents are now in place for the overall scheme thanks to this latest decision.
Straight after the decision, developers submitted detailed planning applications for some of the individual sites of the overall masterplan, including the marina boatyard and associated infrastructure for the new 300 berth Edinburgh Marina complex.
Included in the approved masterplan is a new 13,449m2 retail and leisure centre, along with new homes for more than 4,000 residents.
The focal point of the Granton regeneration will be the marina, which is situated less than two and a half miles from Edinburgh city centre. The total completed development value of the scheme is estimated to be around £500 million.
Granton Central Developments’ Kevin Fawcett said that the latest development is a significant and extremely positive boost for Edinburgh at a very challenging time for the economy.
Fawcett continued: “Aside from the construction jobs the project will create for local suppliers, the development will provide over 900 new permanent jobs upon completion as well as over 2,000 new homes.
“It is a momentous and long awaited day for Granton that has seen 15 years to reach fruition, and we can now be sure that the regeneration can begin in earnest.”
Edinburgh Marina will be the first new marina situated next to a European capital city for a number of decades and as one of the biggest private infrastructure projects in Scotland, it will give a major half billion pound inward investment boost to Edinburgh.
The designer of the project is Wilson Gunn Architects.
