Largest UK Diversity Survey Reveals Ongoing Challenges For Ethnic Minorities in Built Environment Sector

Today, the Sustainability Tool, in collaboration with the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) Programme, has unveiled the outcomes of the largest-ever employee diversity survey in the United Kingdom. This comprehensive survey, encompassing more than 526,000 individuals, has been a crucial annual fixture in the built environment sector’s progress tracking since 2016, offering a detailed record of diversity data and pinpointing areas for improvement. The 2023 survey results, covering 526,415 employees across 537 supply chains of eight major companies and two membership organisations, highlight a substantial increase in participation, with a 55% surge in employees covered and a remarkable 99% rise in participating companies compared to 2022. The inclusion of contributions from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) played a significant role in this expansion. This year’s findings reveal a noteworthy surge of women in the industry, rising from 23% in 2022 to 29.1% in 2023. This significant increase, marking the survey’s most significant rise in seven years, is primarily attributed to first-time reporting by several Tier 1 organisations. Sectors leading this positive shift include central government, rail, and facilities management, all surpassing the industry benchmark value of 29.1%. Key takeaways from the 2023 survey: The survey plays a pivotal role in supporting the built environment sector’s commitment to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion, establishing benchmarks, and highlighting areas requiring action for industry-wide progress. Belinda Blake, Senior Policy Advisor – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at National Highways, said: “By assessing our workforce against sector benchmarks and ONS UK population statistics, we gather valuable insights that enable us to create a targeted roadmap for improvements. This annual data capture exercise is also instrumental in reinforcing the built environment sector’s dedication to diversity, equality, and inclusion. The report offers essential data, serving as a foundation for setting benchmarks and driving progress across the industry. Together, we hold the power to ignite positive change, guiding the sector towards a future that is more equitable and diverse.” Findings from the survey were initially shared at the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s ‘Diversity Data Benchmarking Conference’ in Birmingham last month. The conference emphasised the importance of organisations contributing to the survey to enhance the transparency of the sector and improve diversity and inclusion in key areas such as gender and ethnic diversity. Along with plugging gaps in data capture around disability, pay gaps were also highlighted as areas for attention to achieve a more transparent industry view. Cathryn Greville, Head of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect at Supply Chain Sustainability School, said: “The survey demonstrates the critical importance of quality data in addressing equity, diversity and inclusion issues across the built environment sector. Without relevant data, organisations simply cannot identify, understand and address the real issues they face in their businesses and supply chains, and they cannot track the success of any initiatives put in place to make the workplace more inclusive and successful.” The Diversity Survey is set to reopen in March 2024, allowing anyone in the built environment to participate anonymously for free. Organisations also have the unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and identify pathways for improvement. Valuable insights can be collected by assessing employee and/or supplier bases against sector benchmarks and ONS UK population statistics. This tailored analysis not only empowers organisations to assess their EDI status but also provides a roadmap for targeted improvements, fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace. Chancerygate submits plans for £15m, 59,500 sq ft industrial and urban logistics in East Manchester

Chancerygate submits plans for £15m, 59,500 sq ft industrial and urban logistics in East Manchester

Chancerygate has submitted plans to speculatively build 59,500 sq ft of Grade A urban logistics and industrial space in Clayton, East Manchester. Called Eastside, the proposed scheme will comprise nine units ranging from 4,000 sq ft to 14,000 sq ft available on a freehold or leasehold basis. The projected gross development value is approximately £15m. The 2.3-acre site, which was formerly Walkers of Manchester’s printing facility, is located in Clayton under three miles east of Manchester city centre and two miles west of junction 23 of the M60 motorway. Neighbouring the proposed development is a retail scheme fronting the Ashton New Road which includes Aldi, Subway and Greggs as occupiers.  Eastside sits near to the Eastlands Regeneration Area centred around Manchester City Football Club’s Etihad campus and the upcoming £365m Co-op Live entertainment venue. All units at the development will benefit from electric vehicle charging points and solar cells on their roofs which provide green energy on an affordable basis to occupiers. In addition, the units will be constructed from high-performance building materials to reduce CO2 emissions. The scheme is targeting an EPC A and BREEAM Excellent rating. Commenting on the plans, Chancerygate development director, Chris Brown, who is based in the Warrington office, said: “There’s an acute shortage of high-quality industrial and logistics accommodation for SMEs serving the East Manchester catchment. “Our proposed Eastside development will help satisfy this demand with occupiers having the rare opportunity to purchase their own building. “The development will be of appeal to a wide range of sectors, thanks to its strategic location and proximity to infrastructure links and population hubs. In turn, this will create a long-term economic asset which complements the large-scale regeneration and investment going on in the locality.  “We look forward to working closely with Manchester City Council to progress our planning application and to deliver prime industrial assets to the city.” Founded in 1995, Chancerygate is the UK’s largest urban logistics property developer and asset manager and the only one operating nationwide. The company currently has around 2.65m sq ft of urban logistics space under construction or ready for development across 19 sites ranging from Edinburgh to Chichester. Barwood tops out flagship Richmond office scheme

Barwood Capital (“Barwood”) has celebrated the topping out of Explore, its new Grade-A office building in Richmond. The scheme will provide best-in-class office space with leading ESG credentials to the South East market. Formerly known as Eton House, the building was acquired by Barwood’s Regional Property Growth Fund IV in December 2021 with the aim of repositioning it to prime sustainable office space. The project has involved a full back-to-frame refurbishment, including an additional floor of accommodation and a roof terrace as well as extensive common areas, garden and amenity space. Delivering much-needed high quality office accommodation, Explore offers 45,000 sq ft of space and is targeting BREEAM Excellent, Net Zero in operation and an EPC A rating. Measures to support energy efficiency and biodiversity include enhancing greening and planting opportunities in both the common areas and private spaces plus electric vehicle charging points. The redesign also focuses on measures to support employee health and wellbeing, with amenities including 42 cycle parking spaces, communal lounge, a gym plus changing rooms and showers. The scheme has secured WiredScore Gold and is targeting Fitwell accreditation. The refurbishment has been carried out by RED Construction Group, with Moorevale the development manager for the scheme. A ceremony was held on 10th January, where members of the team gathered to celebrate the building’s topping out. Adam Smith, Asset Management Director at Barwood Capital, said: “Demand for high quality, sustainable and amenity focused office space remains strong in Richmond, where there’s a shortage of Grade-A accommodation. With sustainability and wellbeing at the forefront of the design, Explore delivers a best-in-class option that meets the priorities of businesses today.” Mark Iori, Managing Director at RED Construction London, commented: “We are incredibly proud of the role we have played in completely reimagining this scheme from inside-out, creating a high-calibre, future-proofed office product in Richmond. The elements of this milestone scheme called on many of RED Construction Group’s technical specialities and capabilities, and we have enjoyed working alongside such a skilled team for Barwood Capital’s multi-million-pound development. Explore now serves as another example of RED’s experience remodelling existing sites as prime sustainable office space, evolving the workplace with employee mental health and wellbeing at its core.” Charlie Bishop, Director at Moorevale, added: “As well as its excellent residential provision and good local schools, Richmond enjoys a thriving food and drink scene and has much to offer for businesses and their employees. Quick access to the centre of London via train, plus close reach to the M4, M3 and beyond, further adds to the town’s appeal and we’re expecting strong demand for space at Explore Richmond.” Andrew Willcock and Oliva Jones of Savills are acting as joint agents alongside Chris Bulmer and Clare Lane of Bray Fox Smith. ROCKWOOL® launches CPD on building services insulation standard

ROCKWOOL® launches CPD on building services insulation standard

CPD explains important practical changes and additions to BS 5422 ROCKWOOL, the UK’s leading stone wool insulation manufacturer, has launched an ‘Introduction to BS 5422’, a new CPD (Continuing Professional Development) module to support specifiers and engineers with advice on how to plan and implement the insulation of building services systems following a recent update to the standard. The CPD coincides with the recent publication of ROCKWOOL’s Guide to BS 5422:2023. BS 5422 provides a method for specifying thermal insulating materials needed on pipes, tanks, vessels, ductwork and equipment for certain defined applications and conditions within the temperature range – 40°C to +700°C in domestic, non-domestic and commercial buildings. The standard works as guidance for consultants, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of thermal insulation in the building services sector. It supports Approved Document L as the reference point to determine the minimum thickness of insulation required to limit heat losses and gains from building services. ROCKWOOL’s new CPD module explores the factors that need to be considered when deciding on the insulation of building services systems according to BS 5422. It also demonstrates how the standard aims to improve the living and working environment of the building as well as make it safer and more energy efficient. “With BS5422:2023, the insulation requirements for building services and HVAC systems have been aligned closely with current thermal Building Regulations,” comments Will Wigfield, Product Manager – Fire Protection & HVAC at ROCKWOOL UK. “The new CPD will explain how the standard makes it easier for designers and specifiers to choose the most appropriate material for each project and allow them to exceed the minimum requirements if they wish.” Learn more about BS 5422, register to attend the ROCKWOOL CPD session at https://www.rockwool.com/uk/advice-and-inspiration/learning/. Improvement works to Romano Park complete

Improvement works to Romano Park complete

Improvement works to Romano Park in Ingleby Barwick have been completed, including a revamped play area with a unique, ‘dragon fort’ feature, which is the first of its kind. The bespoke play equipment includes the unique dragon fort and climbing ‘bloqx’ that were developed with input from local schoolchildren and members of the public. Young people and the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees marked the completion of the installation of the items at the play park on Thursday (11 JAN) to officially open the new equipment. The children, from nearby Barley Fields Primary School in Ingleby Barwick, were on the site to use the dragon fort for the first time. The dragon’s features include a climbing wall, net and rock climber, a slide, balancing discs and intricate play panels. Other additions to the playpark include a new basket swing and repairs and replacement of existing items in the play area. In line with the Council’s ambition to make the Borough’s parks more inclusive for as many families as possible, the park also includes three new in-ground trampolines, accessible features on the dragon fort and a new sensory trail with musical instruments. A community garden on the site and a planting scheme with trees, shrubs and benches are also part of the overall improvements. The growing area will allow direct access from All Saints Academy school for young people to enjoy as well as wider community groups. There will also be better access to the platform near the Barwick Pond nature reserve and a re-marking of the Multi Use Games Area, which will allow children and young people to play various types of sports. The work has created a key visitor attraction as part of the town’s leisure offer and is part of the Council’s town centres investment programme, ensuring they are vibrant places and fit for future generations. Councillor Jim Beall, Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, said: “It’s great to see the plans for Romano Park become a reality so that the Borough’s young people and their families can enjoy the open space and play equipment in a safe environment. “The improvements provide another useful addition to the active and healthy lifestyle offer for the residents of Ingleby Barwick, alongside the new leisure centre. “They combine with Council investment in the likes of IB Leisure Centre to play an important part in serving the community.” As part of the scheme, improved signage, replacement litter bins, additional benches and CCTV cameras were also installed, as well as an extension of the hard standing surfacing around the existing war memorial so that pop-up food and beverage concession opportunities can be explored. The improvements are a result of the ‘Let’s Talk About Our Towns’ public consultation that took place in 2020. The consultation showed support for more community leisure facilities, parks and gardens, as well as activities for young people. The Council worked with pupils at Myton Park Primary School, St Therese Primary School and Winstone Primary School to come up with ideas that would create a stand-out play area for families to enjoy. New swings, a dragon theme, climbing boulders and trampolines were just some of the ideas that children created and drew up to help shape the plans. The play equipment design and installation was completed by KOMPAN and the wider park improvements were completed by BCE Northern Ltd. Steel Window Association members, Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) and Steel Window Fittings (SWF) brought their individual

Two SWA members join forces at County Hall, London

Steel Window Association members, Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) and Steel Window Fittings (SWF) brought their individual expertise together while working on the County Hall project.  Building on its 30-year long association with the former GLC headquarters on the south bank of the Thames, ASWS has provided its unique skillset to a company carrying out an equally unusual style of redevelopment within the property’s long neglected top floor level. ASWS carried out a comprehensive, yet carefully considered repair and replacement contract at County Hall. Level 5 of County Hall had actually been empty since 1994, with little maintenance carried out and a number of the dormer window structures having been boarded up or infilled with brickwork for the past two decades.  Following its completion of a detailed condition survey on behalf of the project consultants, ASWS was duly tasked with repairing and easing a total of 134 faceted bay windows, many of which had suffered heavy corrosion.  Director of ASWS, Kris Bennell, recounted, “The original windows featured Medium Universal suite steel frames, so for the 11 which had to be reinstated we produced close replicas using W20 sections; though across the job as a whole we were asked to provide a ‘light touch’ restoration.  This is very much the ethos of the client which is committed to providing sustainable workspaces; as well as offering help with issues such as funding and recruitment.” “Rather than gutting out the 5th floor, the old parquet floor was cleaned and preserved while many wall areas were left bare.  For the fenestration, new handles were fixed to the original back-plates, while we designed new blocks which were fitted to the heads, for the spring catches to engage with.  Any broken panes were replaced and all of the hinges reset to ensure ease of operation.” Kris Bennell concluded, “This is one of the very first contracts of its type in the country, where interventions have been kept to an absolute minimum – based on sustainability and environmental impact rather than cost – and we have been very proud to be involved.”  James Barrett, from Steel Window Fittings, said, “It was fantastic to see our hardware in-situ on such a prestigious building. The B205N09F is a unique window handle with a sleek, curving lever that complements the Edwardian baroque architecture.” Steel Window Fittings’ duplex system was selected to stay true to the building’s heritage appearance whilst providing functionality to the large, multilight windows. Adding a duplex system produces a tight seal between the frame and sash, reducing weathering and promoting longevity. Along with the handle fittings, the B59KN OG – a classic slide stay with a fitted round knob – was also installed onto the bottom section of the window to allow for fixing of the window position for safety within the building. All hardware was supplied in a matching oil rubbed bronze finish to blend with the traditional window frames throughout level 5 in County Hall. The SWA offers UK wide coverage with member companies able to carry out the full range of contracts from the repair and restoration of heritage windows through to the installation of major fenestration packages in contemporary commercial, residential and other types of developments. Plans approved for Bellway to build 220 new homes in Hailsham

Bellway has been given the go ahead to build a new 220-home development in Hailsham, which will feature seven acres of public open space. The housebuilder is to deliver the new properties on a 24-acre site off Mill Road after receiving planning permission from Wealden District Council. The development, which will be known as Woodbury Manor, will consist of 143 three and four-bedroom houses for private sale and 77 affordable homes, including one and two-bedroom apartments and two and three-bedroom houses for rent or shared ownership. The plans also include a convenience store located at the site entrance off Mill Road. The public open space will include an exercise trail and play areas with a range of recreational equipment for all ages, including toddlers, older children and adults. The development will also feature wildflower grassland and wetland features to enhance biodiversity, while bat boxes, hedgehog domes, habitat piles and bee bricks will help protect and encourage local wildlife. Bellway will also pay a community infrastructure levy of £3.3 million as part of over £4 million investment in local facilities and services. Chris Moore, Managing Director for Bellway Kent, said: “We have worked closely with the local authority and have taken on board its advice and comments to present a project which will create the optimum design and layout for this site. “This will be a sustainable development where every home will be fitted with an electric vehicle charging point and benefit from the energy savings and green credentials associated with all of Bellway’s new-build energy-efficient homes. “A key feature of Woodbury Manor will be the seven acres of public open space which will provide children’s play areas and an exercise trail. These facilities will be open for public use so will benefit not only residents living on the site but the wider community as a whole. There will also be a network of footpaths and cycleways to encourage residents to use greener forms of transport. “This development will feature a sustainable drainage system, while the landscaping plan for site includes planting new species and retaining the existing trees and hedgerows. “Alongside the community infrastructure levy, we will be providing a further £975,000 to fund upgrades and improvements in local infrastructure. Within this £500,000 will help go toward improving the local bus services to allow people to leave their cars at home and £10,000 for the extension of a 30mph zone near the development and parking management measures on Mill Road.” Work is due to start on construction in late summer, with the first homes due to be released for sale in autumn/winter 2024. Moreover, personalized artwork not only serves as an expression of your personality but also offers a sense of exclusivity. Custom wall art has become increasingly popular in both homes and commercial spaces. While generic prints are common, opting for custom pieces allows you to showcase your vision and stand out from the crowd. Enhancing the Aesthetics The impact of custom artwork on aesthetics is undeniable. Instead of settling for mass-produced pieces, tailored artwork can elevate the appeal of any interior. Whether it’s adding colors to bring energy or creating an atmosphere with muted tones, customized art can perfectly complement existing decor or become the focal point that ties everything together. Furthermore, artists who create bespoke artwork consider factors like scale and composition to ensure their work seamlessly fits within a given space. This results in an integration between the art and its surroundings, effectively enhancing aesthetics. Creating Conversation Starters One of the advantages of having custom artwork on your walls is that it creates conversation starters. Intriguing compositions, thought-provoking messages, or creative use of materials can engage viewers. Just picture guests walking into your home or clients entering your office being greeted by bespoke artwork—it immediately sparks their curiosity and opens up opportunities for meaningful dialogue. Moreover, when you have the ability to share the story behind the creation of artwork you can bring an added layer of depth and intrigue to your living space. Supporting Local Artists Choosing custom wall art is not about personalization and aesthetics but about supporting local artists. By collaborating with artists in your community or independent creatives, you contribute to their growth and sustainability as craftsmen. Custom commissions not only provide artists with an avenue for expression but also offer them valuable exposure. This mutual support fosters relationships between designers, homeowners, and artists—a fusion of creativity within the local community. Maximizing Versatility: Custom Wall Art in Design Styles Custom wall art possesses the versatility to adapt flawlessly to diverse design styles. Whether your space embodies minimalism, classic elegance, or eclectic uniqueness, tailor-made artwork can seamlessly integrate into any aesthetic. In spaces characterized by lines and a focus on simplicity, custom wall art can serve as a striking focal point. The utilization of geometric designs in colors adds visual interest and injects personality into minimalist interiors. For those who appreciate timeless sophistication, custom wall art offers the opportunity to create a sense of elegance. When it comes to design, incorporating wall art that reflects motifs and techniques can add a touch of elegance. By using details and rich textures, it complements furniture and fabrics, creating captivating spaces that leave a lasting impression. In conclusion, wall art holds importance in design.
