Milestone achieved at Purley Pool centre redevelopment

Croydon Council has announced a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the Purley Pool site, with revised proposals submitted for a new leisure centre, later living housing, and the regeneration of the surrounding area.

A planning application for the site was initially submitted in 2024, proposing a mixed-use development featuring:

  • A new leisure centre with a 25-metre, six-lane main pool, a training pool, an 80-station gym, a fitness suite, and studio space.
  • A later living housing scheme with 10% of the homes designated as affordable to address local housing needs.
  • Shops, a public square, and event space for markets and local festivals.

Following feedback from public exhibitions, workshops, and the consultation process, the plans have been revised to enhance community amenities:

  • Expanded leisure facilities, including a larger gym and fitness studio. The café has been repositioned to overlook a dedicated soft play area, allowing parents to supervise children more easily.
  • Additional public parking, responding to local concerns, while balancing the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) preference for a car-free development. Some spaces will be reserved for later living residents.
  • A redesigned mixed-use building along High Street to better align with the area’s heritage.
  • A new public square strategy aimed at driving town centre regeneration.

The revised proposals for Purley Pool are open for public consultation until February 6, 2025. They will then be reviewed by Croydon Council’s Planning Committee, with final approval also requiring consent from the GLA.
