Don't forget your toothbrush: Top tips for moving home

There is no getting away from the fact that moving house can be a headache. There are all sorts of things to remember and some say it is as stressful as death and divorce, but not as much fun. Fear not! Removals specialist Anthony Ward Thomas has provided the following moving checklist to make the move as painless as possible. Advance to do list: Cancel and transfer home insurance. Notify car and life insurance of your change of address. Make sure utilities are transferred to the new address (TV, phone, internet). The right Internet when moving house is important, so be sure to do this. Round up utility bills (electricity, gas, council tax) Redirect your post. Have change of address cards sent out. Start the registration process of a new doctor if required. Book in the removal with plenty of notice. Have parking for the removal secured (a removals specialist such as Ward Thomas can organise that for you) Book in a cleaner. Start packing, if the removal men are not packing everything. Start sorting out your possessions: what is going with you, what is staying, what is being thrown, given away, sold, put into store. Become familiar with your new home, parking, access requirements (the size of corridors and rooms. Will everything fit?). Lists and separate your belongings: List your main possessions, appliances, large furniture etc. and have a clear idea of where it’s going in the new home. Ideally label them as it will make the move easier. Label items if they are going into storage, being sold or thrown away. It helps to colour code between these different destinations. If you feel it’s necessary to have an exact list of what is in each box, number the box and write a list on paper with that number as a reference. If you try to list everything on the box itself it will be come unreadable. It helps add to your moving checklist a small survival kit that you can pack for your first night in the new house or your last night in the old house, when everything is packed: Toothbrushes, toothpaste and general toiletries. Loo paper. Towels. Tea, coffee, sugar. Crockery and cutlery, one for each of the family. A change of clothes and pyjamas. Emergency toys and books to keep the children happy. Takeaway menus. Last minute ‘to do’ list. Record all meter readings. Make sure you have keys to the new house, ideally before the move as waiting for keys can be the biggest cause for frustrating delay. Check every nook and cranny for forgotten items when the house is empty. Switch off water, gas and electricity. And most importantly – make sure you have a good bottle of champagne to crack open in the new house. It is best to start working through such a checklist early and planning the run up to the move on a day-to-day basis. And of course, while this moving checklist aims to be the Holy Grail, look for personal specifics to your move. You might own a giant sofa that you’re moving from your open barn conversion into a basement via impossibly narrow corridors. Urbo announces joint venture with Bowmer & Kirkland to deliver £175m West Bar Square

Peveril Securities, the development arm of Bowmer & Kirkland Group, has been announced as the delivery partner for Sheffield’s £175m premier mixed-use development, West Bar Square. Peveril Securities, the development arm of Bowmer & Kirkland Group, has been announced as the delivery partner for Sheffield’s £175m premier mixed-use development, West Bar Square. Local developer Urbo Regeneration has worked closely with project partners Sheffield City Council in finalising the joint venture deal with Bowmer & Kirkland. The creation of the new company, Urbo (West Bar) Ltd, formalises the partnership to deliver West Bar Square. Bowmer & Kirkland is one of the UK’s most successful privately-owned construction, engineering and development a groups. Already active in Sheffield as the lead contractor on many major projects, including Sheffield University’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, St Paul’s Place and the New Era development; Bowmer & Kirkland brings substantial financial backing and large-scale construction experience to the partnership. The announcement follows the recently submitted Outline Planning Application for West Bar Square and marks another major project milestone. West Bar Square has been designed to provide up to 700,000sq ft of office space and 500,000 sq ft of residential apartments together with restaurants, cafés, shops and high quality landscaped areas. The masterplan for West Bar Square has been designed by Urbo’s award winning team, 5plus architects and Urbed, working closely with Sheffield City Council to ensure the completed scheme will form a distinctive new extension of Sheffield City Centre. The project will create a series of office and residential buildings focused around the new West Bar Square. This major landscaped space, comparable to Millennium Square in scale, will link Sheffield’s Cathedral Quarter to the Riverside and provide a vibrant mixed-use environment. Ralph Jones, Managing Director of Peveril Securities Limited and Main Board Director of Bowmer & Kirkland said: “We are thrilled to enter into this JV with Urbo on such an exciting scheme.  This will enable us to bring our development and construction expertise to the project, together with our financial strength. The company have already got this site management system up and running on three of the company’s developments in Durham, Leeds and Birmingham. The Building Solutions business made the decision to invest in the Dalux Field app after seeing the unique way that the platform allows projects to be managed and snagging issues that can be raised and recorded in 3D, while still on the site. Fusion Building Systems are practicing advocates of the modern methods of construction and the advances in technology that are associated with them. The design team at Fusion were originally looking into an alternative Dalux product, the free to download BIM Viewer app. However, when the company looked into this product closer, they realised that there were a range of different options that are available from the Nordic software business. From this closer exploration, the company came across the Dalux Field and were impressed immediately with the capabilities on offer through this service. The company were impressed with how this software allowed site managers to directly communicate issues with developments while also leaving an auditable trail of communication. The offsite manufacturing company design in Revit and have been using BIM technology for a while now because of the clarity speed and insight that can be gained by the process as well as the accountability for the design. When using Dalux, a site manager is able to simply mark their position on a site and open up a 3D BIM view of the project while also offering a range of accurate information immediately about any issues that have been found.

16 April 2016 – by Mike Cobb Cushman & Wakefield’s head of loan sales, Federico Montero, has left the company. Montero, who joined Cushman & Wakefield’s corporate finance business in 2012 and is one of the industry’s most respected loan portfolio advisers, is leaving the firm to join an investment bank. C&W is in the process of selling Nama’s €6.5bn (£5.1bn) projects Emerald and Ruby, and Montero will continue to advise on the sale on a consultancy basis. His departure will come as a major loss to C&W, which under Montero had sold a number of the larger and more complex deals for Ireland’s Nama and Germany’s bad bank FMS (see table). Montero led the pricing, selection of assets and conducted the bidding process for some of the most complex sales issued in recent years. The largest of these was the €8.4bn Project Arrow for Nama last year. In addition to his work on loan sales, Montero also established a strong reputation with the firm’s quarterly loan sales report and its comment on the state and future of the non-performing loans market. Montero has 18 years of experience in the sector. Prior to his time at C&W, Montero was with KPMG for five years, also advising on portfolio sales. Before that he worked for Central and South American regional specialist Grupo Bursatil Aldesa. The Electrical Industries Charity is looking for 25 enthusiastic trekkers to take on the Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge and raise £100,000 for the Hendrie family.   Christopher Hendrie, aged 32, was a well-respected electrician who lost his fight to the rare form of Cholangiocarcinoma cancer, commonly known as Bile duct cancer, on 31 October 2014. Hendrie was not eligible for a life insurance due to his existing genetic autoimmune disease, and his family has been left with nowhere to turn. Four trekkers have already signed up and will join the Electrical Industries Charity’s managing director, Tessa Ogle in this fundraising challenge. They include Johanne Stimson of Heat Mat; Andrew Dykes of SES Engineer Services Ltd; Karen McAvoy of Karen McAvoy Publishing Ltd and Mike Smith, of SES Engineering Services and a senior vice president of the ECA. Managing director of Heat Mat, Johanne Stimson, said: “I am looking forward to being part of this challenge and supporting the charity who are helping people within our industry. Christopher could have been an installer of the products that the Heat Mat sells so I feel that as a supplier to this industry, I should do my bit to help.” Mike Smith, of SES Engineering Services and a senior vice president of the ECA, said: “I am proud to be able to show my support for the Electrical Industries Charity and be able to assist in raising funds for Christopher’s family as a fellow electrician. The Internet of Things is a part of this technological transformation of the industry and has been around as a concept for decades. The internet of things was first brought to the forefront when the first smart appliance, a toaster, was connected to the internet back in 1989. In terms of property, many connected trends are used commonly inside the home, whether that is for networked climate control, security solutions and connected appliances. However, in the construction industry, it has been slow to adopt such technological advances. Last year, it was found that construction was one of the least digitised industries. On top of this, it has been found that construction labour productivity has not managed to keep pace with overall productivity which means that technology is a vital way of keeping the industry running. The tools offered by technology are aimed at increasing efficiencies as well as reducing costs and ensuring as much as possible that construction projects are able to run on time. With technology appearing to be so essential, it is strange that the industry appear so resistant to change, especially when making sure that projects can run on time is one of the goals for large builders and developers. There has been a surprising amount of technology that has been developed in order to help this resistant industry, including virtual reality and 3D building modelling. These solutions offer 3D walkthroughs in order to sell a property and 3D VR modelling that can be used to pitch architectural projects. This technology also includes BIM, or building information modelling, a Virtual Reality process that can be used to model a building’s structure and systems during design and construction.
