Miss Macaroon urges construction leaders to create social value in the West Midlands

Miss Macaroon urges construction leaders to create social value in the West Midlands

A leading social entrepreneur has called on construction leaders to engage more with young people and communities to ensure they deliver greater social value in the West Midlands. Rosie Ginday MBE, founder of Miss Macaroon, made the rallying call at the ‘Building a Brighter Future’ luncheon held earlier this week in Birmingham, which involved more than 40 experts from the field and representatives from key funders and national agencies like Homes England. It was a clear message to a sector that generates billions for the regional economy and was reinforced by West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker via a video address and keynote speakers including Gemma Bourne (Better Society Capital) and Simon Chisholm (Resonance). The event provided a review of the current landscape and how more businesses and local authorities are prioritising social value, giving it the same importance as environmental performance. Leo Pollak, Head of Housing Policy at the West Midlands Combined Authority, also shared ‘the great opportunity for the 12,000 construction businesses in the region to create social value’. Delegates heard how firms can address skills shortages through social impact programmes, such as Miss Macaroon’s All Rise Partnerships – an opportunity to create a bespoke course based on the proven ‘Macaroons that Make a Difference’ concept that has helped hundreds of young people overcome barriers to employment. “It was a really positive event with a real commitment from all attendees to create more social value in the West Midlands,” explained Rosie. “There was some fantastic best practice being shared, with some construction companies already linking the delivery of their social value with their personal KPIs and bonuses, which drives real innovation and engagement.” She went on to add: “We want to get the message out there that being ‘social’ is an opportunity and not a cost to the business and one of the ways we can directly assist is by crafting programmes that will give people – who traditionally have faced barriers to work – the confidence and softer skills needed to consider a career in construction. “We’ve done it for catering, we’ve done it for hotels, and we’re doing it for retail…construction is ready to be the next big adopter.” Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, added his support: “This event is crucial for discussing the importance of young people and the difference investing in young people can make to their lives. “It is a big priority of mine to help them access the skills and the training opportunities they need to get better jobs and build successful careers here in the West Midlands.” Hayley Millar, Social Value Manager at Wates Construction, concluded: “Social value sits in the heart of Wates Construction and all our projects aim to have a positive impact on the communities we work in. “It was lovely to see current social value programmes delivered in the West Midlands, whilst also exploring new ways to reach communities, which is always a good thing.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Regional regeneration and investment opportunities to be unlocked at new West Mids event

Regional regeneration and investment opportunities to be unlocked at new West Mids event

THE recent Autumn Budget made a firm statement for growth and improvement in public services, with a focus on regionality with six authorities with ‘track records of managing major programmes’ announced as eligible for integrated funding settlements to invest in their areas, including the West Midlands Combined Authority.  With this continued focus on regeneration opportunities and maximising public sector investments, leading procurement specialist Pagabo is launching a series of regional events aimed at driving further success and growth. The events will be further backed by the organisers of the largest built environment conference of the year, UKREiiF, for which Pagabo Group is returning as platinum partner for 2025.   The events intend to connect those in local government responsible for regeneration with innovative funders and developers, with the first event focusing on the West Midlands being hosted at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. The ‘Regional Investment Collabs’ will provide a centralised forum that serves as a platform of development success and springboards opportunities across the board. With space to not only explore options for upcoming developments, the events will also bring forward public sector procurement success stories – making sure that local government, developers and funders are all able to take learnings into their future projects and see a greater level of success as a result.  At Symphony Hall in Birmingham, a programme of panel discussions and talks will be accompanied by targeted networking to connect local and combined authorities directly with the developers who can turn their visions into reality. The programme will place focus on regeneration success in the West Midlands, the scale of opportunities and potential challenges, and how procurement and social value fits into the bigger picture.   Jonathan Parker, development director at Pagabo, said: “There’s a palpable feeling across the country of the opportunity that lies ahead, especially when looking at plans to unblock the planning process and push development and housing forwards. The greatest success comes, however, from that bigger picture regeneration – going beyond the development of just one project or small site.  “No one party can create large-scale development by themselves, and that’s where relationships become central to success. Our Regional Investment Collabs are there to build and nurture relationships that drive that town and city-wide regeneration that brings about transformation not just from a built environment perspective, but from the social, economic and environmental side too.   “The West Midlands has already seen great success in many areas, such as the City West and St George’s developments in Wolverhampton which have been procured through the developer-led framework Pagabo manages. This being said, there’s a palpable feeling of the opportunity in front of us, and there is so much potential still to be unlocked in the West Midlands – from remediating disused brownfield sites to town or city-wide redevelopment.”   Attendees have already been confirmed from West Midlands Combined Authority, Birmingham City Council, City of Wolverhampton Council, Coventry City Council, Lichfield District Council, West Midlands Growth, Staffordshire County Council, and Newcastle-upon-Lyme Borough Council.   During the day, a panel of leading UK funders will also share what they look for when deciding how to allocate investment in the West Midlands, seeking to help those local government officials in the room improve their bidding processes.   Matt Christie, director of external relations and content at UKREiiF, said: “We are delighted that Pagabo Group has returned as UKREiiF’s headline partner in 2025. By organising this event, it’s clear the team wants to take our shared principles – of facilitating the unlocking of regeneration across the country – beyond the three-day UKREiiF programme, which is something we fully support.  “The buzz around this inaugural gathering – particularly from local authority participants – is building. I hope many of the conversations that are set to take place feed into Pagabo Group’s programme at UKREiiF in May 2025 – we may even see some early success stories emerge.”   A regional report will be released after the West Midlands Investment Collab, which takes place on 27 November. Similar events will be hosted in other regions around the UK in the run up to UKREiiF itself, taking place in Leeds in May 2025.   For more information, please get in touch with the Pagabo team via info@pagabo.co.uk   Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Cygnus, a leading developer and manufacturer of EN 54 certified and 100% wireless fire detection and alarm systems, will be showcasing its latest product innovations on stand K20 at this year’s London Build, the UK’s leading & largest construction show. London Build takes place from 20-21 November 2024 at Olympia, London and attracts over 30,000 contractors, architects, civil engineers, developers, local councils, house builders/associations and construction professionals. “We are looking forward to being back at London Build,” comments Stephen Marsh, Head of Sales at Cygnus. “At last year’s event we were showcasing the world first EN 54 certified 100% wireless fire detection and alarm system, SmartNet. This year we are back with additional solutions to enhance the range including the Cygnus ALERT remote monitoring and notification platform, the new Cygnus Mesh Analyser and the Portal Programming Unit (PPU). We’ll be demonstrating the capabilities of SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 as well as the Mesh Analyser and Cygnus Config Tool software. It is exciting to have a such a comprehensive range of innovative solutions to share with visitors.” SmartNet is EN 54 certified and a BS5839-1 compliant system, up to twenty times faster to install than wired systems, with minimal disruption. The SmartNet network is built on a combination of radio devices, operating on a self-forming, self-healing wireless mesh network with multipath network redundancy utilising channel hopping technology, delivering a reliable and robust solution. SmartNet-Pro offers a scalable solution with the capability for each panel to connect 511 devices and up to 96 zones, with networking of up to 5 panels available via a software release code, providing a combined solution of over 2500 devices. Whilst SmartNet-Pro* caters to the larger scales of application, SmartNet-100** provides all the key benefits of SmartNet-Pro in a more cost-effective solution, designed to support a maximum of 100 devices. Based on this nature, SmartNet-100 is best suited for small to medium sized applications where the scalability of the SmartNet-Pro is not required. The Cygnus team will also be on hand at the event to discuss the recently launched Cygnus ALERT, the perfect remote notification and monitoring complement to Cygnus’ world first, EN 54 certified and 100% wireless SmartNet range of fire detection and alarm systems. Using Cygnus ALERT, installers and site administrators can receive event, fault or mesh information in real-time, enabling swift responses to on-site situations. Cygnus ALERT presents easy user management to view and notify across multiple sites, and a variety of environments. In addition to Cygnus ALERT, the new Cygnus Mesh Analyser will be on display. The Cygnus Mesh Analyser is an enhanced diagnostic and maintenance software tool, delivering a graphical display of mesh signal strengths and connection paths for each device in the system. Furthermore, the Cygnus Mesh Analyser aids the commissioning process of fire safety systems, shows the device history and provides suggestions of how to strengthen the network. The new Cygnus Portal Programming Unit (PPU) has been designed to help with the planning and deployment of the SmartNet system.  The PPU allows installers to deliver firmware and configuration updates to devices wirelessly whilst they are on site, making the whole process faster and more efficient for areas that are hard to access. The new Cygnus Site Survey kit allows installers to deploy three bespoke detectors that replicate the mesh network to ensure the suitability of the system for the environment. Milton Park scoops national award for green innovation

Milton Park scoops national award for green innovation

Milton Park has been named as one of the country’s most sustainable innovation communities, thanks to its initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and maximise biodiversity.  The Environmental Sustainability Award, presented at the United Kingdom Science Park Association’s (UKSPA) 40th anniversary conference, celebrates the Park’s efforts to create a culture of sustainability across its 300-acre campus.    The UKSPA award, presented by renowned physicist and author Jim Al-Khalili, highlighted a range of initiatives introduced by Milton Park, many of which originated from its Greener Workplace Forum (GWPF). The GWPF is an independent group of 85 members, comprising 41 occupiers, who convene to share best practice and raise awareness of existing green initiatives around energy use, recycling and travel.   In selecting Milton Park, the judges highlighted the progress made in reducing its single occupancy vehicle use by nearly a third since 2018. As a result, over half of commutes to Milton Park are made through sustainable transport options, supported by initiatives such as the £20 subsidised bus pass scheme for employees living locally, leading to bus usage increasing from 8% in 2018 to 27% in 2023.   Highlighted in the award win was Milton Park’s contribution as a test-bed location for the UK’s first fully electric, autonomous bus trial, providing evidence of the Park becoming a ‘living lab’ and demonstrating how effective collaboration can propel innovation.  The award also acknowledged Milton Park’s work in biodiversity, its zero-to-landfill waste management policy and other green initiatives, which include reducing waste and emissions from science companies, new electric vehicle charging points and improved cycle paths.  Additionally, the Milton Park team is actively engaged with the surrounding community, including local schools and charities, to drive greater awareness towards an inclusive transition to net zero. Explore Milton Park, its schools’ engagement programme, has benefitted over 1,500 local children and, as a founder member of the Didcot Powerhouse Fund, Milton Park has helped to raise over £300K for local charities since 2021.   Commenting on the award, Veronica Reynolds, Sustainability and Community Manager at Milton Park, said: “We’re delighted to receive the award, recognising how the Milton Park innovation community is working together to tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges.   “Whether making our buildings more environmentally friendly, encouraging greener travel or creating nature-rich spaces, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. The award provides a timely reminder that greener growth is not only possible, but an exciting opportunity for the science park community to work collaboratively to secure a better future for our planet.”   For more information on Milton Park and sustainability, please visit: https://www.miltonpark.co.uk/sustainability Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Edward Architects named as best residential consultancy practice

Edward Architects named as best residential consultancy practice

In Residential Property Awards run by Yorkshire Children’s Charity The sustainable, regeneration and innovative residential work in Yorkshire of a Leeds-based architects practice has been recognised in this year’s Residential Property Awards run by the Yorkshire Children’s Charity.   Edward Architects has been named as the Best Residential Consultancy Practice in the award scheme which celebrates excellence across the region’s residential property sector. The architects firm, which rebranded and relocated to Marshall’s Mill last year to accommodate continued business growth, successfully demonstrated delivery excellence and first rate services for its clients in the residential category. Highlight projects in the region included Massey Fold in Spofforth for Yorkshire Housing where the firm was lead consultant in securing planning consent for a 72-home scheme in the village, which is set in a Conservation Area.  An innovative, carbon efficient 216-home development on Edge Lane in Openshaw for Your Housing also demonstrated the practice’s commitment to sustainable design and community-focused housing solutions.  This scheme also saw the firm collaborate with the University of Liverpool to develop four identical houses with differing specifications, monitored over a year to assess cost, comfort, usability and energy efficiency for future applications. Another key sustainable scheme included a masterplan for the regeneration of the former 73-acre Maltby colliery site in Rotherham for Hargreaves Land, which subsequently led to the firm’s role evolving to deliver the employment units and the outline application for a 200-unit residential housing scheme. The firm’s work in helping to drive forward the ambitious community scheme to transform Holbeck’s iconic viaduct in Leeds into a vibrant green space for the public to enjoy was also lauded, as well as it’s specialism in improving the lives of clients, families and carers through its accessible design work. Yorkshire Children’s Charity was established in 2022 and has already made a huge impact in the region, helping more than 20,650 disadvantaged children in Yorkshire.  The Residential Property Awards put the spotlight on the region’s property talent whilst simultaneously raising vital funds to support the valuable work of the charity. Graham Edward, MD, Edward Architects said; “We are very proud to win this award and it is testament to the hard work of our entire team.  As a business we have seen a 10% growth in turnover despite challenging market conditions and rising costs, so picking up this accolade is a great end to the year as both the housing sector and the modular market are key drivers in this growth and remain active.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
