SBTi validates Marshalls’ science-based net-zero targets in milestone moment

SBTi validates Marshalls’ science-based net-zero targets in milestone moment

Building materials specialist Marshalls has approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), making a bold commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all scopes by 2050. Marshalls’ near-term targets – to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50.5% by 2030 and reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 37.5% by 2033 – have been validated, as have its long-term targets, to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% by 2040 and reduce absolute scope 3  greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% by 2050. The targets use 2018 as the base year. In 2019, Marshalls became one of the first businesses in its sector in the UK to commit to the SBTi programme, publishing an original set of targets which were validated in 2020.  The newly validated targets are based on a recalculation of the Marshalls group footprint following its acquisition of roofing specialist Marley in 2022. They also encompass the requirements for any net-zero target to include scope 3 emissions, as first detailed in the Net-Zero Standard of October 2021.  The new targets were submitted to the SBTi in January 2024 and validated in September. The SBTi said it commended Marshalls’ net-zero target, which it says is currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. To achieve its targets, Marshalls will work closely with its suppliers – particularly those who supply cement – to explore the technologies and innovations available to decarbonise its supply chain. The SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels. Michael Edwards, Group Head of Sustainability for Marshalls, said: “This is a true landmark moment for Marshalls and one we’re very proud to be telling people about. It’s a clear demonstration of our absolute commitment to become a more sustainable business, which is something we, along with our stakeholders, take incredibly seriously. “Additionally, achieving this robust, gold standard in validation will undoubtedly go on to influence and drive our product development and innovation, ensuring we meet customer sustainability needs and remain competitive in a market increasingly focused on environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, our Environmental Product Declarations allow us to demonstrate how our commitment is manifesting itself at a product level and give our customers the power to make informed, sustainable choices. “We’re now actioning the meaningful and measurable steps required to meet our targets – a commitment that’s set in stone.” Tim Clement, Director of Social Value and Sustainability for Morgan Sindall Construction, a customer of Marshalls, said: “Knowing Marshalls has made a net-zero commitment which has now been validated by the SBTi provides us with a greater level of confidence and reassurance that we’re working with a business that is absolutely committed to doing the right thing for future generations – something that’s incredibly important to us here at Morgan Sindall Construction.” Marshalls worked with the Carbon Trust on the development and submission of its targets to the SBTi.  Samuel Lloyd, Sector Lead for Construction, Property and Infrastructure at the Carbon Trust, said: “Setting rigorous carbon reduction targets that are aligned to the latest science is a key step in any organisation’s path to net-zero. We’re pleased to have worked with Marshalls to develop these SBTi-validated targets, signalling the company’s strong commitment to accelerating its decarbonisation journey.” The work Marshalls is doing to reduce emissions is part of a larger sustainability strategy that includes continual improvements to its circularity of materials, water use and approach to responsible sourcing. FSi Promat launches updated HPE sealant to support healthier work environment

FSi Promat launches updated HPE sealant to support healthier work environment

In October, FSi Promat will launch a reformulated PyroPro HPE sealant to support healthier working practices in the construction industry. As part of a company-wide initiative to reduce chemicals that could pose a risk to health, FSi Promat has modified the formula of its PyroPro HPE fire stopping sealant to help protect contractors and installers – critically, whilst maintaining its fire performance so the new formula can be used in the same applications as before. A key product in the FSi Promat range of fire stopping solutions, PyroPro HPE is a high performing sealant that is used to reinstate fire resistance for service penetrations and is approved for use around CPVC pipes (as typically used in sprinkler systems), plastic pipes, cables and non-combustible insulated pipes. In the reformulated sealant, FSi Promat has successfully removed a raw material, which had recently been re-classified as potentially carcinogenic, whilst retaining the same level of fire performance which has been verified in third-party testing; so all of its existing certification remains unchanged. As a high-pressure expansion sealant, PyroPro HPE is an intumescent sealant that can expand up to 20 times and is used to reinstate fire resistant compartments where breaches have been made to allow for service penetrations, such as pipework and cables.   Packaged in cartridges made from up to 50 percent recycled plastic, and also in foil packs, the move to reformulate the sealant is in line with FSi Promat’s commitment to make changes where possible that make their products less impactful on the environment and support improved standards in health and safety. FSi Marketing Manager Emma Taylor said: “FSi Promat prides itself on creating fire stopping solutions that are proven to perform, and wherever possible, we also want to make products that are safe for the people using them. “FSi Promat’s PyroPro HPE sealant is an important product in the marketplace as it is approved for use with CPVC, and in particular, sprinkler systems, making it a critical part of a fire protection system. “The sustainability challenge in our industry lies in making changes to established solutions such as this, whilst ensuring they still offer the performance needed to protect people and property. Changes to fire stopping formulations require extensive research and testing to ensure the product continues to perform at the highest standard. “Updating the HPE formula to remove chemicals that could cause a risk to health is a step forward and demonstrates FSi Promat’s commitment to making changes for the better, both in terms of creating a healthy working environment – and a more sustainable future.” FSi Promat is a leading manufacturer of passive fire protection products in the UK. Through a specialist research laboratory and testing facility at its headquarters in Measham, Leicestershire, FSi Promat continually develops high quality, innovative products to protect buildings across the world.  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Leeds Beckett experts and Aggregate Industries reducing injury risk in the construction materials industry

Leeds Beckett experts and Aggregate Industries reducing injury risk in the construction materials industry

A groundbreaking project completed by Leeds Beckett University and Aggregate Industries UK (AIUK) is reducing the risk of injuries and increasing productivity and profitability for AIUK – as well as informing best practice around safety in the UK construction materials industry. The Safety Voice project was a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project, part-funded by the Government through Innovate UK. The project aimed to reduce transport-related risk across AIUK’s sites, using an innovative, proactive approach. The team – including Leeds Beckett psychology experts and a full-time KTP Associate – have created a dynamic toolkit to reduce future incidents and fatalities. This is now being rolled out across the organisation worldwide and creating a safer and healthier place for employees. AIUK has more than 200 sites and around 3,700 employees across the UK. They are part of the Holcim Group, a global leader in building materials and solutions, operating across 70 countries worldwide. The project was led by Dr Jim Morgan, Principal Lecturer and Leader of the Psychology Applied to Safety and Health (PASH) research group at Leeds Beckett. Dr Morgan explained: “We have designed and implemented a toolkit, using academic theory and models, which proactively identifies safe and unsafe behaviours within the business. This includes a step-by-step process for developing work system redesign – the way work is planned and conducted – and behaviour change programmes. This means AIUK can fully understand the underlying factors that influence their workplace safety and are putting in place strategies to prevent fatalities and reduce future incidents.” AIUK estimate that – as a direct result of the KTP – they will increase their profits by £8million within the next three years. This is based on predicted cost savings from reduced fatalities and injuries, increased productivity due to work system redesign and reduced injury-related employee absence, and an increase in the number of bids won for new work. The KTP has now been graded ‘Outstanding’ by independent assessors at Innovate UK – this is the highest possible rating awarded to projects. A key element of the KTP’s success was Laura Jackson – the full-time Associate recruited to manage the project as a member of the AIUK team, with the support of the Leeds Beckett academic experts. Laura led four research studies, including questionnaires and interviews involving more than 280 drivers, and a highly innovative eye tracking and sleep study. The Safety Voice Toolkit supports AIUK’s long-term aim to be the safest company in the industry, and to achieve ‘zero harm’ in its workplaces. It will be shared across the UK construction materials industry to inform best practice. Following the success of the KTP, Laura Jackson has secured a newly-created role at AIUK as Behavioural Safety Business Partner – leading AIUK in their journey to improve behavioural safety across the whole organisation. Laura is also continuing to study for her Masters by Research (MRes) degree at Leeds Beckett University. Laura said: “To achieve AIUK’s ambitions, they needed the psychological expertise relating to safety and health in the workplace at Leeds Beckett. The targeted and tailored safety behaviour change interventions that we have developed are not something that could be achieved by off-the-shelf consultancy services. “The KTP has had a significant impact on safety culture at AIUK. I worked hard to gain trust with colleagues, and tactfully engaged stakeholders, to successfully instil core values, foster collaboration, and promote accountability. This has been a genuine ‘bottom up’ approach to zero harm strategy – and is the first step in a long-term shift in how we manage and prioritise safety in the workplace. I am now enhancing our strategic safety plan for 2024 onwards, which includes a structured approach to identifying, addressing and preventing unsafe behaviours and conditions.” Jo Griffiths, Head of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships at Leeds Beckett University, added: “To have achieved an Outstanding grading for the project is testament to the success of this collaboration between Laura, our academic team, and AIUK. We are thrilled with the impact this is creating across the international Holcim Group – and look forward to continuing to make lasting impact for the extensive range of businesses, public sector and third sector organisations we work with through our KTP programme.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Grayson partners with St Edmunds Society to enhance education with cutting-edge training materials

Grayson partners with St Edmunds Society to enhance education with cutting-edge training materials

Grayson, a leading provider of construction consumables, is proud to announce a new partnership with St Edmunds Society (St Eds), a Norwich-based charity offering vocational training and employability skills training to young people aged 16-18. This collaboration aims to significantly enhance the learning experience for St Eds’ students by providing them with modern, up-to-date materials and equipment for training and teaching purposes. An award-winning charity, St Eds offers a diverse range of courses and qualifications, including City and Guilds Multi-Skills Construction (L1) in which students can gain skills in carpentry, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, tiling and plumbing, with the opportunity to specialise in these areas in an industry-approved training environment. St Eds also works closely with local schools to support students who find mainstream education challenging. Recognising the high-need nature of St Eds’ student cohort, the institution has a robust welfare team in place, providing extensive emotional and mental support beyond what is typically available in traditional schools and colleges, ensuring that students receive the care and guidance they need to succeed both academically and personally. Through this partnership, Grayson has supplied St Eds’ construction department with state-of-the-art equipment and materials, including those for cavity wall construction and other specialised techniques used on-site. This contribution has enabled St Eds to expand its curriculum, offering more enrichment activities that go beyond standard qualification requirements. As a result, students can gain a deeper insight into the construction industry and hands-on experience with materials and techniques that are crucial for their future careers. In addition to supplying equipment, Grayson works closely with the staff at St Eds to keep them up-to-date on the latest products and techniques, elevating the quality of education and ensuring that both tutors and students are well-acquainted with the modern materials currently used onsite. Grayson also recently sponsored the Construction Student of the Year Award at St Eds’ graduation ceremony in July. Katie Wills, Grayson’s Regional Manager for the South, attended the ceremony to recognise the hard work of the emerging talent and proudly presented the award to the deserving student. “The tutors are thrilled with the new resources provided by Grayson,” says Heidi Duhig, Fundraising Manager at St Eds. “These are tools and materials we wouldn’t typically have access to due to budget constraints, and they allow us to provide a more comprehensive and engaging learning experience for our students. Thanks to Grayson’s support, we can now expose our students to a broader range of construction skills and knowledge, better preparing them for their future careers.” Gary Smith, Lead Construction Tutor at St Eds, comments: “We have been able to develop our teaching methods with the resources that Grayson has been giving us. We are using realistic profiles on one model now, rather than using wooden profiles. Cavity walling is more realistic with the cavity stop socks they have generously given us, along with the lintels, cavity trays and weep holes.” By partnering with St Eds, Grayson is helping to ensure that the next generation of tradespeople are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to succeed in the industry. Tony Higson, Managing Director at Grayson, adds: “We are incredibly proud to support St Edmunds Society in their mission to provide alternative education and practical training to young people. By equipping students with the latest materials and tools, we are helping to create a solid foundation for their future careers in construction. It’s essential that these students have access to the best resources, and we’re delighted to be a part of their journey.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Spanwall Wins Major National Manufacturing Award for Digital Innovation for its New Smart Manufacturing Initiative

Spanwall Wins Major National Manufacturing Award for Digital Innovation for its New Smart Manufacturing Initiative

Façade specialist Spanwall has won a major national manufacturing award. At this year’s Engineering & Manufacturing Awards, Spanwall was presented with the Digital Innovation Award for its Smart Manufacturing initiative. These awards celebrate the trailblazers of UK engineering and manufacturing, and the companies and individuals that are shaping the future of industry. The event at the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London was attended by around 300 manufacturing and engineering professionals from across British industry. The judges praised Spanwall’s entry as ‘a great example of the way in which digital technologies can be used to drive manufacturing efficiency’. David Clark, Managing Director of Spanwall, said, “These awards do a fantastic job of recognising and promoting innovation and excellence across the best of UK industry. To win the Digital Innovation Award is a huge accolade for Spanwall and is a real credit to our design and manufacturing teams at every level of our business.” “We are committed to digital transformation and believe it is fundamental to delivering our core values of innovation, safety and quality to our customers, specifiers, and most importantly, to building owners and occupiers.” Spanwall manufactures sheet metal façade solutions for some of the world’s most iconic architectural landmarks, as well as buildings across the public and private sectors, and large-scale refurbishment projects. The Digital Innovation Award was presented for Spanwall’s market-leading Smart Manufacturing initiative, which has applied digital technology to streamline processes and workflows. This has leveraged the power of digital twinning for rapid prototyping of its metal façade components before going into full production. The new technology also allows the live tracking of every component part through each stage of design and manufacturing, delivering real-time reporting for improved efficiency and a completely new level of customer communication, transparency and traceability. The digital system has integrated multi-disciplinary data to create a truly information-driven product workflow. This allows Spanwall to create and test new metal rainscreen cladding designs for its customers and specifiers more efficiently, whilst optimising manufacturing resources and significantly increasing overall capacity. The Smart Manufacturing project represents a significant investment for Spanwall, particularly in the level of testing and validation that was required to implement seamless workflows. The result is shorter lead times and cost reductions of around 80 per cent for digital prototyping of sheet metal components. Machine set-up times for production runs have also been reduced by up to 50 per cent. As Spanwall is often involved in producing highly complex metal façade solutions for large-scale construction projects, identifying potential issues at the earliest design stage is critical for a ‘right first time’ approach. The new digital technology provides increased certainty of project delivery on time and on budget, and to consistently high-quality standards. The next phase of Spanwall’s digital transformation will apply new technology to integrate quality control, preventative maintenance, health and safety, and estimating into digital workflows.
