TaperedPlus partners with Alt Labs to revolutionise roofing sector with Augmented Reality system

TaperedPlus partners with Alt Labs to revolutionise roofing sector with Augmented Reality system

TaperedPlus, a national leader in the design and supply of flat roofing and insulation systems, is currently evaluating a bespoke Augmented Reality (AR) system that could prove a gamechanger within the roofing industry. Developed by award-winning digital innovators Alt Labs on behalf of the Teesside-headquartered company, the software enables smartphones and tablets to be used to scan a flat roof, providing instant and highly accurate measurements. Unlike other applications currently being used within the roofing industry, it does not require significant investment in hardware or expensive monthly subscription packages, which can cost many thousands of pounds per user per year. The Alt Labs technology automatically uploads the data to TaperedPlus’s internal system, converting it into technical blueprints – a process at least ten times quicker than traditional measuring methods, particularly when applied to complex flat roof designs. It also eliminates the element of human error. Alt Labs, based in Middlesbrough, was approached by TaperedPlus to deliver a solution that would enhance efficiency. It developed bespoke software utilising light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors incorporated into Apple smartphones and iPads. This uses light emitted from a sensor to measure the range to a target object, allowing augmented reality to place markers that plot key points of a roof for precise measurements. The technology is both highly secure and easily scalable and can be adapted for immersive technology, including Virtual Reality headsets. Part of TaperedPlus’s ambitious growth plans, the project follows a recent £5.5 million investment by equity investor BGF along with achieving B Corp accreditation, reflecting its commitment to targeting inefficiency within its procedures. It is also working with academics at Teesside University as part of a separate initiative to develop a unique system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline its technical drawing processes. Aman Chahal, co-founder and CEO of TaperedPlus, said: “We are thrilled to be at the forefront of technological innovation within the roofing industry. This AR system will significantly enhance our efficiency and accuracy, allowing us to better serve our customers and contribute to more sustainable building practices. The integration of AR and AI marks a significant milestone in our digital transformation, opening up new possibilities for growth and innovation.” Imran Anwar, CEO of Alt Labs, added: “Our bespoke solution leverages cutting-edge technology to transform how roof measurements are captured and processed, setting new standards for the industry. This technology is not only innovative but versatile, with the potential for wide-ranging applications across multiple sectors. By utilising LiDAR and augmented reality, we are able to provide unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, which could prove a real gamechanger.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Network Rail restores Lanark station roof

Network Rail restores Lanark station roof

Lanark Station has received a substantial boost following a significant investment from Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust. The renovation work on the Grade B listed platform 2 building roof and canopy at Lanark station was successfully concluded by the end of 2023. This effort has extended the lifespan of each component by up to 25 years. Prior to the renovation, both structures were in a state of disrepair, with deteriorating timbers posing a risk of the Georgian wired glazing panels slipping and potentially causing harm. Engineers conducted extensive rot repairs and implemented new slate coverings, lead flashings and a modern ‘twinfix’ polycarbonate glazing system. Furthermore, the building has been rendered wind and watertight for future occupants, with the Railway Heritage Trust providing £75,000 in grant funding towards the £310,000 project cost. Valerie McMillan, senior asset engineer, Network Rail, said: “We are delighted with the end result following the completion of works by our framework contractor CPMS, and sub-contractors Kerr Roofing and Eradakil Joinery and Preservation. We are grateful to the Railway Heritage Trust for their grant funding which has contributed toward this project becoming a reality. This completes our planned works at Lanark station which delivered the external restoration of the main platform 1 building, reinstatement of railings and renewal of the station access stairs.” Tim Hedley-Jones, executive director of The Railway Heritage Trust stated: “We are pleased to support Network Rail’s restoration of the Platform 2 building at Lanark. The first station was opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1855 so it is an important part of the heritage of the town.” Phil Campbell, customer operations director with ScotRail who manage the station, said: “We’re delighted to see the works completed at Lanark, securing the future for this historical station on the ScotRail network. ScotRail is grateful for the significant investment made by Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Fund, enhancing the station environment, and improving the customer experience.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Lucent W1 scoops Roofing Multi-discipline award

Lucent W1 scoops Roofing Multi-discipline award

The complex multi material roof at Lucent W1, behind the Piccadilly Lights, has won Best Multi-discipline Project over £250k at the national Roofing Awards. The project was a collaborative venture between AccuRoof, roofing contractor E J Roberts and main contractor Wates Group. This mixed-use development behind the Lights at Piccadilly Circus in London’s West End has one of the most complex roofs ever to be built in the capital across an almost complete city block. Designed by Fletcher Priest Architects, the project unified thirteen different buildings including several historic facades and the treatment of the new roof was integral to their design. AccuRoof were commissioned by Wates Group to design the complex folding roof to meet the architects’ original design intent, plus targets of BREEAM Outstanding and the Gold WELL Building Standard. The solution was to design in planes of natural slate, but stringent environmental and fire safety requirements ruled out the use of hot works or lead flashings. The solution the AccuRoof came up with, their design office detailed and E J Roberts executed, is a roof comprised of three different roofing systems. Planes of Cwt-y-bugail Natural Slate make up the bulk of the roof, elZinc Lava zinc provides flashings, gutters, balcony edges and cladding, and IKO Permatec Hot Melt inverted roof system is used for the flat roof areas, the 22 terraces and behind the iconic Lights. The design challenges on the project were many and included: coordinating the interfaces between slate, hot melt and zinc; facilitating the shedding of rainwater from complex interlocking roof planes, some of which fold down the side of the building, and designing to a steel frame which required up to 20mm movement both horizontally and vertically. Altogether the design team produced over 300 details. The construction challenges included: building a massive test rig to test the roof design and construction to European standards for weathertightness and up to 100mph winds; operating in one of the busiest parts of the West End with limited access and two flagship retail stores kept open; storing all the slates on the incomplete roof after the crane was dismantled half way through the package, and implementing dozens of reworked details that would frequently occur between the rebuilt historic facades and a new steel frame. All the roofing materials were supplied through SIG Roofing’s extensive supply chain, via its Kentish Town outlet and a separate holding area near the site. All materials were craned on site, but a tight programme meant that the crane was dismantled part way through the roofing package and all 28,000 slates had to be stored on top of the building weeks before their installation. E J Roberts Roofing is an experienced multi-disciplinary roofing contractor registered with AccuRoof’s ACIS Contractor Installer Scheme.  The firm has over sixty years’ experience and their slaters alone who worked on this project have over 100 years’ joint experience in slating. AccuRoof’s registered contractors receive priority training, technical and on-site support from experienced field technicians, allowing the AccuRoof design team to take on the design liability for certain projects and ensure the project receives a reliable warranty. Emerson Bennett, Managing Director at E J Roberts Roofing said, “We are absolutely delighted to have been recognized by the Roofing Awards. It is testament to our many decades of experience in roofing and the collaborative way in which this complex project was approached that we were able to bring out the very best in our team and deliver to such a high standard.” Chris Lodge, Managing Director of SIG UK Exteriors agreed. “Only a single roofing design specialist and a single roofing contractor in a collaborative relationship could have successfully delivered this project. The teamwork of AccuRoof and E J Roberts to deliver on this project was fantastic and showcases the unique multi-solution and end to end value of the AccuRoof offer. Expertise in design, over multiple covering solutions, supported right through to distribution service from our specialist SIG Roofing branch network, in this case the team at our Kentish Town branch.” The judges said, “A final product of the highest quality was delivered by the install team.” Read an article about how the complex roof was designed and built: https://accuroof.co.uk/article/lucent-w1-how-the-complex-roof-was-built/ Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Roofing Specifiers Urged to Futureproof Against Changing Weather Conditions as Temperatures on the Rise

Roofing Specifiers Urged to Futureproof Against Changing Weather Conditions as Temperatures on the Rise

As predictions suggest that global temperatures are likely to exceed record heights within the next five years, leading roofing components manufacturer Klober are urging specifiers to consider futureproofing against changing weather conditions when choosing roofing products. The World Meteorological Organization has revealed in its latest annual assessment that the temperatures will likely exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for the first time in human history. Its probability has increased with time to a 66% chance at current, up from the 48% likelihood predicted last year and near zero percent chance in 2015.[1] High temperatures are the most common direct effect of global warming, but climate change can also influence weather patterns. The probability of more intense wind events is indirectly heightened as a result for example 2022’s Storm Eunice demonstrated 122mph wind speeds[2]. Such events can subject roofing to significant wind uplift forces and so preventative solutions must be considered in preparation. Nick King, Portfolio Manager at Klober, comments: “While many may not initially think of heightened wind speeds when they hear global warming, it’s something to consider and prepare for as weather patterns are predicted to change. Wind uplift can cause considerable damage, such as tile or roof membrane damage that can lead to additional problems like leaks and associated damage. Specifiers should make sure their membrane of choice is durable, suitably wind resistant and water resistant to help prevent such damage occurring and save the homeowner money and down time in the process.” Roof membranes such as Klober’s Permo Forte, offer protection against heightened weather as they are built up of multiple layers and contain a reinforced, built-in mesh safety grid for added durability. This composition allows for them to withstand movements and shifts during high winds without losing their integrity, ensuring they cannot come into contact with, and potentially dislodge the tile or outer covering. “Taking it one step further, the use of self-adhesive tape can create a strong air and watertight seal, providing durable protection against winds. Like many of our products this membrane is BBA approved and breathable to help it continue to protect against the build-up of mould and condensation.” To find out more about British Standards for membranes, click here. Top of the class: Stockport School project scoops NFRC 2023 Industry Choice Award

Top of the class: Stockport School project scoops NFRC 2023 Industry Choice Award

The NFRC UK Roofing Awards 2023, held on 12th May, celebrated the very best of roofing in the UK. From projects to individuals, the roofing industry shone a spotlight on stellar examples of work.  The Industry Choice Award, which sees members vote on the entry they feel showcases the best example of roofing work in action, was this year awarded to Fulwood Roofing Services (northern) Limited, for the re-roofing of Stockport School, Greater Manchester. The project was completed using a complete BMI Redland SpecMaster service and a BMI Redland Rosemary Clay Classic system, demonstrating workmanship excellence in action.  The project is a shining example of how expert roofing contractors, in conjunction with technical support and top-quality products, can overcome site challenges. Stockport School came with its fair share of hurdles. The site is comprised of 24 individual roofs, totalling over 4,000 square metres and spanned 12 months. Add in the COVID-19 pandemic, uneven roofing underlay caused by century-old wooden timbers, a live school site and the need to protect against UV degradation – Fulwood Roofing turned to BMI Redland and SpecMaster to ensure all bases were covered on a project of this scope.  With a bespoke roof specification in hand due to the BMI Redland SpecMaster service, Fulwood Roofing Services (northern) rose to the challenges and overcame them with ingenuity. Over 240,000 Redland Rosemary Classic clay tiles were needed for the roofs – however, as clay is a natural material, variances of up to 5mm can occur when dried in the kiln. While this natural variation normally contributes to the character of a traditional clay roof, on a roof of this size these variances can add up if not managed on site. Fulwood Roofing came up with a creative solution to this. Taking a mean average measurement of ten tiles, every set of ten tiles laid were checked against a perpendicular line, helping prevent any gaps or unevenness.  The old wooden timbers of the roof were also tackled with smart thinking. The new underlay has been laid in such a way that externally it looks level, but underneath it conforms to the uneven timbers. This was vital as it avoided extensive remodelling of the roof, and the existing timbers could continue to stand. s the underlay was worked in small sections that could be tiled over almost immediately any UV degradation could be avoided,  The live school site was anticipated to be tricky, however, the COVID-19 pandemic worked in favour here, as it meant students were off-site more, allowing project flexibility. When the school was fully open and active, a detailed schedule of work was supplied to the school ahead of time, allowing them to move students around the building with minimal disruption. Stephen Bithell, Roofing Contractor at Fulwood Roofing Services (northern) Limited, commented: “Everything was first class from a product point of view. You can’t get quality work done without quality products, and luckily for us, we had a great team on site, as well as great products. Working during the COVID-19 pandemic and the supply chain issues that came with that, BMI Redland really kept the project going. The product and the finished aesthetics are really great.” Fraser Biles, Sales Director, at BMI Redland, congratulated Fulwood Roofing Services (northern) Limited on the win: “It’s fantastic to see the Stockport School project awarded the NFRC 2023 Industry Choice Award. Fulwood Roofing delivered an exceptional project with great skill and care and as a result received over 20% of the votes out of all the shortlisted projects. “Our Redland team were pleased to be able to provide support on the project using our SpecMaster service, which provides a 15-year whole roof guarantee, and allowed us to deliver a technical specification designed specifically for the project, and the Redland Rosemary Clay Classic tile in the Russet Mix finish was a fantastic choice for the school. Not only does it fit with the conservation area, but it also helps retain the school’s aesthetic character without compromising on roofing protection.”  BMI products also featured in the NFRC award wins for Reinforced Bitumen Membranes and Bituminous Hot Applied Liquid Waterproofing categories – respectively Progressive Systems Ltd for Launceston College using the Icopal Thermaweld Firesmart System and MAC Roofing & Contracting Ltd for Heatherwood Hospital using an Icopal Parabit Solo Hot Melt System – recognising the roofing contractors in delivering this outstanding work.  The full list of NFRC UK Roofing Awards 2023 winners can be found here: https://www.nfrc.co.uk/uk-roofing-awards/winners/2023-winners  For more information about BMI Redland, please visit: https://www.bmigroup.com/uk/redland-pitched/  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Network Rail starts roof renovations at London Waterloo station

Network Rail starts roof renovations at London Waterloo station

Network Rail has started work to renovate the roof at Waterloo Station in London. Engineers have begun work on this two-year project to refurbish the 100-year-old station roof which overlooks the main concourse and was rebuilt just after the First World War in 1922. Work is needed to replace the existing glazing and support structures which will bring the roof back to its former glory. Approximately 10,000 new glazed panels will be installed across 12,000 square metres of roof – an area almost twice the size of the pitch at Wembley Stadium. The panels will be made from a polycarbonate glazing material which is around 50% lighter in weight, reducing stress on the structure and future proofing it for decades to come. A range of other work to improve the overall customer experience at the station is also being carried out where teams plan to make huge improvements to the station’s retail offering which will see new brands and food outlets coming to the station, as well as giving some existing shops a makeover. Station teams have also listened to customer feedback and are adding additional sustainable wooden seats to keep people comfortable when waiting for trains which will add to the 480 seats, plus 120 seats on platforms. Work also started earlier this year to refurbish the toilets, adding a gender-neutral facility as well as more female facilities to bring them in line with what is available for males, plus extra baby changing areas. This is part of the wider Improving London Waterloo station programme of work planned over the next few years. Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
