GRAHAM appointed to fit-out THG’s ICON Development at Manchester Airport

GRAHAM has been awarded a contract by THG, the global technology platform company, specialising in taking brands direct to consumers, to complete the interior fit-out of its ICON Studios and ICON Offices at Airport City in Manchester. The privately-owned fit-out contractor will help to create 376,000 sq. ft. of high specification office and studio space spread over the 12-acre landmark business campus, adjacent to the UK’s third biggest airport. THG will be the anchor occupier of this development, with the content creation studio sitting at the heart of the ICON development, where THG will continue building its unique end-to-end ecommerce infrastructure, THG Ingenuity, as well as office space to house approximately 3,000 employees. Designed by Penson, the fit-out programme begins in November, and is scheduled for handover in May 2021. Commenting on the contract award Sue Blanche, GRAHAM Development Director, said: “THG is a truly global e-commerce company based in Manchester and is investing heavily in job creation across the region. We are delighted to be playing our part in this investment, ensuring a high-quality interior fit-out of studio and office space for this brand’s talented team of people.” GRAHAM’s appointment by THG follows its continued expansion across the north of England region. The leading fit-out contractor was recently appointed to fit-out Qiagen’s world-leading precision medicine campus, and is presently delivering Leeds Building Society’s new headquarters in Leeds City Centre.

Take off for first phase of Manchester Airport’s £1bn transformation programme

Manchester Airport has celebrated the completion of the first major phase of its £1bn transformation programme. Passengers flying out of the UK’s third largest airport were welcomed onto a new pier, which connects to Terminal 2, for the first time last week. Construction of the 216m long structure commenced on site in July 2017 with the build completed in late January 2019. The facility was then trialled before transitioning into operation on 1 April. The Pier which provides 11 jetty served “contact” stands has more than 1400 seats in a fully glazed upper departures level offering panoramic views of the airfield. A separate, segregated arrivals level provides passengers with a travellator-assisted walking route to the main terminal arrivals facilities. It will be used by all airlines currently operating out of T2 and was constructed from 14,000 steel pieces, 47,184 bolts and painted with 2,600 litres of paint. In preparation for the pier, the apron was extended by 49,000sqm to accommodate new aircraft parking stands, along with the construction of a new taxiway and associated infrastructure and services. The opening marks the next phase of the airport’s multi-phased transformation programme that will see Terminal 2 become the focal point of its operations. More than 1,800 people are currently working on the project which recently welcomed its 100th apprentice as work gathers pace. Over the coming weeks more and more flights will gradually move over to the new pier as it becomes fully operational. The main design and build contractor for the pier was Laing O’Rourke with Arcadis engaged to support MAG as Project and Programme Managers. Pascall and Watson were the Architects behind the pier’s design. The main airfield works design and build contractor is Galliford Try with Jacobs providing the airport with client Project and Programme Management support. The 11 airbridges that have been fitted to the pier are provided by Adelte. Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “This is a significant milestone for Manchester Airport as we deliver the first phase of the biggest investment we have made in our 80 year history. “Over the coming years we will transform the airport for all of our customers, giving the North the world class airport it deserves. The investment we are making and the range of destinations we connect to, in all corners of the world, underlines the vital role Manchester Airport plays in creating jobs and driving growth across the North of England. “Since putting the first spade in the ground in July 2017, a huge amount of work has gone into getting our new pier, its stands and the multi-storey car park ready to open today and I would like to thank all of our colleagues and delivery partners for their efforts.” Peter Jones, Operations Leader for Laing O’Rourke, said: “It is a significant achievement to have the pier, link bridge and multi-storey car park ready for airport guests within 18 months. The project’s design, construction methods and logistics were all planned digitally before construction on the edge of the live airfield began. Our digital engineering approach meant we, and our project partners were able to work together efficiently; putting productive solutions in place to minimise disruption to passengers and staff, while delivering new facilities for Manchester Airport on time. “We are now looking ahead to the completion of the Terminal 2 extension which is due to be handed over to the Manchester Airports Group next year.” Colin Abbott, Aviation Director Galliford Try, said: “We are incredibly proud to have played such a key role in the first phase of this exciting transformation project. We’re delighted to see aircraft using the new apron and stands, which is testament to the hard work and dedication from our team of experienced colleagues. Commencing this project 24 months ago, our team has worked over 400,000 hours, constructing and resurfacing around 65,000 sqm of apron and installing 28,000m of AGL lights and power amongst other services. “By working successfully in collaboration with other contractors; we have now realised the first phase of the airport’s vision for the future, whilst cementing further our long-standing relationship with MAG. Plans for the opening of a private terminal at Manchester Airport, which will provide travelers with the experience of a private jet when flying on commercial airlines, have been unveiled. The new PremiAir terminal will be open to all passengers regardless of airline or destination, with prices starting at £50. Completely separate to the airport’s existing three terminals, the new facility will cater to different services in line with individual passengers’ preferences. Passengers departing from the PremiAir terminal will be offered a personalised welcome, faster baggage processing, a lounge with complimentary food and drink, and a dedicated security channel. As part of the ‘private jet experience’, travelers will also be driven straight to their aircraft in a private car transfer. “By introducing PremiAir, we’re offering something unique for all of our passengers, and creating a completely new way to travel,” said Manchester Airport Group (MAG) airport services CEO Andrew Harrison. “It is something a large number of customers have been telling us for some time they would be interested in and we hope the services it will offer will appeal to a wide range of passengers, whether they are travelling for business, want to mark a special occasion or just want to add something different to their experience.” In addition, the PremiAir terminal will be available to incoming passengers as a standalone service or part of a round-trip booking. They will receive a car transfer direct from the plane and have access to a dedicated passport control service, as well as the PremiAir lounge. “The launch of PremiAir at Manchester Airport is the beginning of an exciting new project for MAG and we plan to assess opportunities to introduce it at other airport sites in the future,” added Andrew. Scheduled to become operational by the middle of this year, the private terminal is currently under construction on a site next to the Runway Visitor Park.

A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road Is Open

The A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road, a £290 million dual carriageway that links the A6 at Hazel Grove to the M56, has officially opened. It aims to improve connections from the city to its airport, as well as provide better connections to the £1 billion Airport City business park and development sites in Handforth Dean and Woodford. “We are investing more in improving our roads than ever before – making it easier, safer and quicker for people to get where they want to go. This new road will not only make it easier for people to get to the airport and away on holiday, but it will help businesses in the North West improve their access to world trade through flights from Manchester,” said Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, who opened the road. “It will also lead to the creation of thousands of jobs, boosting the economy and further demonstrating the strength of the North West’s role in the Northern Powerhouse,” he continued. The A6 Airport Relief Road is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs in Greater Manchester and deliver a £2.5 billion boost to the regional economy. “This new road connects Manchester Airport with the people and businesses of Stockport, Manchester and East Cheshire. It was only made possible by Department for Transport and Greater Manchester Combined Authority funds and it is a good example of central government working together with a city-region to deliver major infrastructure that improves people’s lives,” added Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. “The A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road will enable people to make quicker and easier journeys, and will cut congestion, especially on local roads. The supporting cycling and walking infrastructure will also make active travel more attractive and safer for more people and supports our ambition to make them the first and natural choice for short journeys. Greater Manchester is emerging as a world-class city-region and we want to work with government to deliver a transport system to support it,” Andy concluded.

Manchester Airport is inviting businesses to learn about opportunities around its £1 billion transformation programme. Laing O’Rourke and Manchester Airports Group (MAG) will host a Meet the Buyers event to engage with local businesses and inform them on how to take advantage of opportunities on the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme. Having recently won the first stage of a two stage Design and Construction contract for the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, Laing O’Rourke is now looking for supply chain partners from the local area. The Meet the Buyer event will take place on the 8 November in the Concorde Hangar at Manchester Airport and will be used to educate local businesses about the project and announce information on the supply chain opportunities. Brad Miller, MAN-TP Programme director said: “Manchester Airport is committed to playing its part in driving local and regional economic growth. “Our £1bn investment in the airport in the coming years will create a significant number of jobs and contract opportunities and, together with Laing O’Rourke, we are committed to ensuring as many local workers and supply chain businesses can benefit as possible. “The Meet the Buyers event is important as it will allow firms in the region to understand, and find out more on how they can work with us to help deliver what is a hugely significant scheme for the north.” Laing O’Rourke’s Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach will play a pivotal role on the project and those attending the event will be given an explanation of how the modern methods of construction will be utilised on site. Manchester Airport’s World Freight Terminal Secures New Deals

The World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport has welcomed two new companies and two customer renewals on the eve of its 30th anniversary. MAG Property, the development arm of airport operator Manchester Airports Group, has signed long-term leases with cleaning supplies firm Lime Supply and IT services provider Posilan. Lime Supply has taken 581 sq ft at Building 308 on Avro Way and Posilan has moved into a 456 sq ft facility within the same building. Further, existing World Freight Terminal tenants MIQ Logistics and Evolution Time Critical have agreed to extend thee deals on their space at Building 308. Lime Supply MD Matt Burtinshaw said: “In logistics, location is everything. “Our new offices at Manchester World Freight Terminal are directly linked to the middle of the region’s motorway network, and adjacent to an international airport with global links.” Posilan MD Steve Daniels commented: “Having clients across the North West means that Manchester Airport is a perfect central location at which to base our key staff. “With the road connections we can be with clients quicker than before.” Matthew Bird, property manager of MAG Property, said: “It’s pleasing to see more companies see the advantage of locating at an airport. “Our focus at MAG Property is on providing the right kind of property and location to suit the individual needs of businesses and, in particular, those in industry sectors that benefit from airport locations. “I know that our occupiers old and new will all benefit from being at one of the best connected locations in the North West.” Established 30 years ago, Manchester’s World Freight Terminal today handles more than 100,000 tonnes of import and export freight and mail annually, across both passenger aircraft and freight-only aircraft.
